Hello! I'm Andy - a semi-professional singer-songwriter from the UK, based in Germany. I'm a solo artist as well as vocalist of a rock band. I also teach English Language at university level, and this semester, due to covid-19 restrictions forcing an online semester on us, I did a special online version of my course "The Language of Songwriting."
Alongside a bunch of songwriting challenges, part of the final project included the option of making a reaction/review video to a song that my students particularly enjoy, discussing what elements of the song(writing) are special to them. I never give out tasks I'm not willing to do myself, so I recorded one of my own (Ghost Love Score by Nightwish, also on my channel). I put it on TH-cam for fun to see whether there was interest in this kind of video, and I was really pleasantly surprised at the positive responses! So I've gone ahead and made some more!
In contrast to the many wonderful reactors out there, I'm reviewing a song I already know well. My reactions, therefore, are not as spontaneous or sensational as those of professional reactors ;-) Would you like more? Johnny Hallyday 1 million persons at his concert at the Eiffel Tower when he was alive. And when he died even more people came to his funeral, a funeral that even Former French president funerals could not come close
I already said in another video that I am very surprised that finally Lara is being recognized for the talent she has been showing us for so many years. Her career suffered a sabotage, so, it's good to finally see justice for one of the best vocalists I've heard.
When Serge Lama told his friend Alice Dona about how much he was hurt, she composed the melody in a few hours, and when he heard it he wrote most of the lyrics in 20 minutes, because he needed so much to evacuate the pain he's been secretly feeling for years. Lara Fabian interpreted it beautifully, Serge was really touched when he saw her performance, he admired her.

I believe that Lara added the line "Cet amour me tue" and when Serge Lama heard it he loved it so much that he now sings that line in his own performances. From what I understand, her version is his favourite. Which is saying something when a song is so personal.
@@stephanieellis5399 they both respect and love each other, he sang her song ‘je t aime’ to her, adapting it to what he thought she would love to hear and she indeed did and said his version is better than hers. Anyway, 2 great artists with nothing but respect and admiration for each other.

Great reaction. One of my favorite parts is when she erupts in laughter right after the acapella which adds to the feeling that she’s going off the edge mentally without breaking the tempo.

Andy, this is by far the most complete reaction to Lara's "Je suis malade" that I have seen (I must have seen over a hundred of this song alone). You not only captured the vocal, but the story telling, the nuances in the writing as well as the emotional delivery that Lara is known for, you didn't miss a thing. Bravo my friend.
Being "complètement malade" is a french espression that you often say to someone to tell that he or she is going crazy. It's not an expression specificaly related to love, but here she's singing that she's sick (because of love) to the point of being crazy. In french we also have an expression that is to be "malade d'amour" (to be so in love that you're sick and/or crazy). A bit like "lovesick", in english. In fact in this song "sick" really means "in love".
Lovesick was the conclusion I came to as well - glad to hear I was on the right lines!
Not at all. In this case, she is really sick (in depression). In french to be lovesick is translate by "J'en suis malade" et non "Je suis malade". Dalida was well known to be in a major depression. She commits suicide in 1987 and attempted to his life multiple times from 1967 to 1987.
@@ML-sm8zc And yet, "Je suis malade de toi" means to be lovesick. Malade in french as a double meaning depending the context and this song is obvioulsy playing with this double meaning. If you only chose to see one meaning you somehow cut yourself from the poetry of the song.
@@TMBTM it’s the « maladie d’amour »…it can seem like mental health, but it’s more to be sick from not being able to get out of a heartbreak…I’ve been there before.

I think that Lara Fabian's live performance of Je Suis Malade touches nearly everyone in one way or another.
She completely understands this song and you can really feel the pain and agony in every single word that she sings.
As a singer you have to be able to emote (project) but at the same time not let your emotions take over completely - so you can get through the song without breaking apart.
That is so hard.
Lara truly has amazing storytelling skills.

This was a really good analysis, thank you for sharing! When you mentioned the use of similie in the lyrics it sort of dawned on me that most songs in the french repertoire rely heavily on those, like Jacques Brel for example in "Ne me quitte pas" and "le port d'Amsterdam" or Aznavour with "La boheme". I guess it is just the way great lyrics are written in french. the use of imagery gives a greater impact and add to the emotion that the song-writer is trying to convey.

You delivered the most accurate and brilliant analysis I’ve heard so far (and I’ve heard quite a few). My first language is French and I knew Serge Lama long before this specific performance . Even if you missed a few very subtle lyrics/gesture golden nuggets, you mostly got it right . She’s totally amazing. This gives the best performance I experienced in my life, and I’m not that young! This song has originally been written and interpredted by Serge Lama. In purpose for himself, it had a true meaning regarding his own Life. He was married but wasn't anymore into this official relationship, he was having a relationship outside his failed marriage, but the woman left him, then he wrote this song... in the 1980's, he will find back this woman who left him during a time...
Here his performance, which is I find is outstanding too... Many french and francophone singers have interpreted this iconic and famous emoitional song... many of them have "broken their teeth" on it... Only few performed it well : Serge Lama of course, Dalida because she had a true reason to interprete it too... and sure, Lara Fabian. There exists also a very beautiful version in Italian by Ornella Vanoni... See forward, I put the 3 links, just have a look, and you'll see what I mean.
This emotional song has even deeper Lyrics in french and unfortunately, the english translation doesn't, can't, give it justice... At this level, Lara Fabian don't perform the song, she personifies it, she is the song.

The lost love in this song isn’t a lover, it is Lara’s Mother. While Lara was born in Belgium, at a young age she moved to Italy. There she grew up living with her Mother & Grandmother . Lara was very close to both, but in the lyrics she gives us strong hints. She is describing her emotion’s, are as a child when her Mother would go out at night. The difference is that she knows her Mother is truly gone, she is truly left alone, and it has made her sick, completely sick, perfectly sick. Pain is the emotional place she sings from in this song, according to Barbra Streisand. She asked Lara where she went while singing this song. Barbra said, that is deep.
Lara's version of Perdere l'amore is phenomenal as well.

Andy, another fabulous reaction and analysis to, in this case, a classic song and performance by Lara Fabian. When you played the ending over again I actually heard the guitar you were speaking about. Andy, I'm just a music lover and my ears and my heart tell me what I enjoy listening to. But, may I ask you a question in particular about this performance? I understand the band has a tremendous obligation to do it's part in creating a musical sensation to not only compliment the vocalist but provide the audience with a sound that can produce goosebumps among the listeners. The question: How much do the musicians get into Lara's performance?
Or, do they just "do their job"? I couldn't help but notice at the very end of the song the piano player actually jumped out of his seat to hit the last note.
That's a really interesting question, Robert! It's a shame we don't have better quality resolution on the clips so that we might see the musicians' faces a little better and have more than the musical output and body language to work with. It feels like the drummer, guitarist and pianist are really into what they are playing and were probably on a larger number of Lara's tour dates; the string players are likely booked for special concerts such as this.
I'm sure there is a mixture of both in the live music industry. Session musicians are partly there to earn a living and partly there through the love of music, ideally especially the music of the artist they are accompanying. One wonderful example of this is Berit Fridahl, Heather Nova's lead guitarist, who has performed on her albums and tours for a couple of decades now.

Thank you, Frank! I know that there are a lot of vocal coach reaction channels that concentrate on vocal technique, so I didn't want to repeat that too much, instead focussing on a more holistic view of arrangement, performance and lyrics. The breathing is of course really important in Lara's performance, also in Adagio. I can maybe mention that in my next Lara video!

In her concerts she has always chosen excellent accompanists and the musicians who play with her seem to bring out her best. I am a big fan of her body, hand and arm movements, and suggest the 2018 Je T'Aime @ Microphone partly because of that but I also think you will find the composition of the band and style interesting!

"Je suis malade" is a song written by Serge Lama for Dalida in 1973. She suffers major depression and was suicidal. She commit suicide in 1987.
That's why the interpretation of this song is so moving. Dalida try multiple times to commit suicide. It was well known in France. She didn't support he suicide of his lover Luigi Tenco after his song was not selected at the San Remo song contest in 1967. This was the beginning of multiple drames in Dalida's life. Serge Lama wrote this powerful song. There are no much singer who can interpret it in a moving manner.

i think i watched a hundred reacts-to-Lara Fabian videos and i'm still searching for someone who reacts to the kind of tremolo in the word "soir" during the a-Capella
Respect for the analysis, for real ! I'm French, I've known this song by Mr Lama for years but have had the chance to "rediscover" it through different reactions on YT, as well as through this specific interpretation by Lara. Like I had never realized how deep and beautiful the lyrics were, and though the translation is mostly correct, the meaning's here, I assume since it's written in my maternal tongue, the impact is even stronger. Lara, the band ... I guess there's nothing to add, the video speaks by itself. But yeah, so far I might have watchted 15 or 20 videos about reactions, from "average" people as well as vocal coaches, some songwriters too, but YOUR analysis was damn interesting ! Probably the most interesting to me, actually. I guess that when a video lasts more than 20 minutes and it feels like it's lasted for 5, it says it all... :) Where you cut the video and the way you turn back, just perfect! Though it's my field, I found your vocal and musical analysises damn relevant and helpful to even more understand the music. We can feel the passion and that you know what you talk about! And yeah, as a dude with a literary academic background (I also studied phonetics and stuff), who has been trying to write his own sh**, you opened my eyes on small details i had forgotten, and I definitely (re)learned a lot. As a french You gave a good analyse about metaphors she used because it's not easy to translate correctly lyrics French to English. it could help to understand better for not french language people sens of this song. Good work on that. By the way the lyrics originally was created by Serge Lama in 70's so this is why sometimes lyrics could be weirdo for a woman (like "I don't smoke anymore" etc.).

I personally think Killing Me Softly is a flawless example of how dynamic and versatile she is. The performance itself starts with a very jazzy feel to it and it gradually builds. The staging is very simple but very effective. It also shows off how dynamic she is going from very intimate and soft to a very grand finish.
Purple Rain is a track that in small parts she made her own but was also very respectful of the original version! This performance proves how much passion, dedication, skill and talent this woman possess!

Serge Lama wrote some beautiful lyrics. To be fair, in France we're very much focusing on the quality of lyrics. Rhyms, imagery, metaphores, etc, etc.

Par exemple en France lorsqu'on parle d'un tueur en série on dit que c'est un malade, dans le sens qu'il a perdu la raison. Lorsque vers la fin du morceau Lara Fabian se met à rire tout en chantant, on a comme l'impression qu'elle lâche prise, qu'elle perd la raison, qu'elle devient folle, une malade.

Thank you Cyril! I've read a number of different theories about what the song was really about for Serge and I kind of like the mystery around that. But in Lara's version, it seems to be clear what she interpreted it as being about 💔

As a kid I heard Lama singing it. It interesting to have a woman perspective to it as a performer.
Some of us are recommending more recent Lara. One example is "Je T'aime@Microphone" which she performed in Quebec in 2018. Je T'Aime is one of her earliest and best known hits, but she always revitalizes her songs when she repeats them and this performance with a small band is worth the time!
Interesting! I recently did a double review of her Adagio Italian version looking at performances that were a few years apart to see how her interpretation had developed in the meantime. Maybe this could be something I could try for Je T'aime!

Well, in my point of view, any songwriter would dream of writing a text like this I think. But surely none would agree in exchange to relive the two (ten in truth) years of suffering described with such genius here. Where at each line, words, like waves, come to cover even more bitterness previous line. When in addition, music knows how totally carry text, give it rhythm, then silences, to bounce back with even more energy, like waves of despair that tirelessly come crashing down on a cliff. And when it's a diva who orchestrates this sentimental storm, then it's a hurricane of emotions that sweeps over us!
But price of this masterpiece was high since it's taken from author's own story.

This is "La nuit, je mens." interpreted by Alain Bashung, written by Jean Fauque in first place and Bashung to supervise, and composed by Bashung, Jean-Louis Pierot, Edith Fambuena ("Les Valentins" French rock band). With participation for music of an entire section of strings composed entirely of women and conducted by Joseph Racaille. Song recorded in London for final vocals and mixing at Pierce Entertainment studio.
Clip, directed by Jacques Audiard (French & international cinema director), received award for best clip of 1999 at "Victoires de la musique" in France. And Bashung is most awarded artist in France from this same academy (a French equivalent of American Grammy Awards).
This particular song has a meaning hidden below different possible interpretations, in particular, first that comes to mind: story of a man (singer, musician failed perhaps) who invents a legend of himself to retain a love that goes away. Second as an underlay, evocation of rather unbridled sexual relations, and then all interpretations that everyone is likely to add to it. Hidden meaning is obviously most interesting angle, but also most terrifying of song lyrics, most underground, most tragic.
