Good job son! Im proud of ya! Guess all those times I had old boats out in my driveway or in my barn paid off!! Love, your old, grey haired, hippie Father!! 😊❤
@@normanmonroe3554 it definitely paid off! Love you dad
You guys made my eyes water. 😢😂
I flip boats in Washington. I can't stand Marketplace but the majority of listings are there. I go to Craigslist first because I can find what I want faster. I use keywords on both such as 'project' or 'not running'. I also search by brand or use the keyword 'outboard'. The deals are out there. I caution anyone looking for a boat to flip to familiarize yourself in typical rot locations such as stringers and stern and how to determine rot. I have found rot even in a boats that was stored undercover but I made it so appealing i got top dollar for it after repairs. I try to make a minimum of $75 an hour for my labor but prefer $100. This is cheap for marine repair. People say i should open a shop but then I'm dealing with the feds and state. This is a cash only business and it's hard work. Keep up the great vids Maybe I'll do a series on the boats i rebuild some day.
@@dwightvoeks9970 everything you said is spot on 💯
Always straight to the point, I love your vids!
I want to flip motors because for one, I learned a lot, and 2, if I buy cheap, it pays to learn a lot more and it gets paid off when I can sell for a profit. I agree about the messaging and how you approach to buy from one or selling something. But as I said, I learned a lot because I work for a very successful pontoon dealership in New Hampshire and flipping on the side could really help me! Your videos definitely have given me insights.
@@Tylnorton really happy to help! Awesome way to earn cash on the side

Im binge watching them right now, lol. lovin these vids. I look at boats on marketplace every day, but I’m drawn to the 50k plus boats that I can’t currently afford. Maybe once my truck is paid off and sell my old house. Til then I’ll keep rocking the 1999 basscat
Great video. The other thing you kind of eluded to is to have cash. In the buying and selling world cash is king.
Heck yeah- late fall and winter are a great to pick up boats on marketplace for cheap! I buy them and scrap them instead of flipping them, this time of the year people want them out of their yards so they dont have to look at them!
Great tips on learning values, thanks for the video!
@@UptoSomethingOutdoors for sure 💯 thanks for watching!
Made me laugh! That's what I do,,, I usually pick up old boats & trailers, or leaky CAMPERS & scrap them out. My good friend has a landfill dump behind his house & gets to smash, & dump anything for free. A major help. I usually charge people, sometimes, if tires & or trailers need lots of work, just to get (crap) scrap out of their yards. MADD MONEY! ;>)

Another tip, not so much on FB marketplace but other platforms and goes along with your spelling comment. I will search possible misspellings of specific items. The misspellings may not be getting the traffic/views and the seller maybe willing to reduce the price.

Never tell a seller how far away you’re coming from. If I know you’re coming from far away then I’m firm on price. Buyer is not likely wasting time and going back empty handed.
There's gonna be some real good deals on boats in California soon with all the lakes closed
Awesome idea for a channel
I'm in Manitoba and the price of stuff here is still crazy over priced from COVID, very few deals but they are gone in minutes. Ended up getting a boat in Minneapolis and bringing it back over the border, all said and done with duties, tax, conversion, etc is was half the price of a comparable boat up here. Makes no sense...
In Texas, it’s a requirement to have the title for the boat, trailer, boat and engine. Individuals trying to sell boats on Facebook will tell you they have the title, but the title is not in their name. The Texas parking and wildlife tells me it’s against the law to sell any boat on Facebook without having the title in your name.
First time boat buyer here.. would you buy only outboard ?
@@tblakeman I would yes! I’ve owned inboards and they’re great but outboards are far easier to learn and work on in my opinion. You also run into issues with I/Os like billows, way more common to have things leaking through the transom / lot more that needs to be in tip top shape when buying used. I’d definitely go with an outboard for your first boat

@@SpiritedWrenchers I feel that!! But I wish you the best of best of luck with your projects my friend thanks for the support
How do you feel about when selling and you have multiple people interested and they make an offer? Who do you choose to sell to? I got called every name in the book when I sold to one guy over another
@@jimiluketic9431 good question! Typically what I will do is I will ask where they are coming from. I’d prefer the guy that lives 10 minutes down the road to come first because if he decides to pass on it, I didn’t waste as much time as I would have if I let the dude making a 2 hour drive come. If there’s no crazy time differences most of the time I go in order of who messaged me first. It’s hard to argue against a simple “hey, I have another person who messaged me first that’s going to come take a look but I will let you know if they decide to pass on it”
How the heck do you setup alerts? I don't see a way to do that from the search alerts area of the site?

Why do i see a-lot of mercury 9.9 72 ish models on marketplace!!! I own one myself and have issues with it staying running!! Ive never tested anything you say to check yet!! Like compression or spark testers !! I am going to order that stuff soon!! I was just curious if other issues make you stay away from these models!! Thanks for the videos. Ive learned alot
@@jasonstephens-e7v thank you! And yeah, I avoid those old Mercury 9.9s like the plague… mainly because they’re extremely hard to find parts for. Early 70s Johnson’s and Evinrudes have tons of options for cheap aftermarket parts but those mercs do not. Buying a new set of something even basic like ignition coils for them will run you $200+ now a days because they really only sell factory original that are very rare
@@BoatBusters My neighbor has a 9.9 that he claims to be re-carbed to now a 15 HP. How can one tell if that has been done? Is there a big difference between the 9,9 carb and the 15hp version?
@ the only real difference is the hole on the carb that hooks up to the engine intake is bigger than the 9.9- it allows in more air. Im not so sure with mercuries but with Johnson’s and Evinrudes there are 2 steps to make it a true 15 Hp, you have to mess with the exhaust a bit. Just swapping carbs makes it about a 13 hp.
You Never Know is the title: I went to a guy's house for a gas can advertised. After paying him he asked if I would be interested in an outboard. So, he shows me a Evinrude 8 HP and says it runs but no idle. Price he gives me? $40.00. Took it home and the first thing was wrong plugs, Compression is 90 pounds both cylinders. Next, the coils are literally melted. Ordered those. Fuel pump, leaking. Replaced that. No Way this thing ever ran in recent history. Hopefully Coils will give the right spark. I went with genuine OEM coils. The seller gave me his engine stand which I would love to show someone. He took a medical aluminum walker, put wood across it and hung the motor. I did not even notice it until I got home. Hey it works.
That’s super awesome… some of the best deals I’ve gotten were from people telling me “oh and if you’re interested I also have…. Etc. and sounds like a sweet stand!! 😂
If bass boats are something you look for, there are several down south here in Alabama. I know it's a drive, but profit is profit. I look for center consoles if you see any. I do drive distances.
Wht is lowest price?
How much money do you think a Evinrude 15hp electric start short shaft would sell fora?!
@@Jevinrude_dude158 in my area, I’m listing it for $750 ish and probably taking the first offer of $650-700. Assuming it has a clear title. But also depends on the year model could be a bit higher
Most marketplace people are trying to scam you Fact, I put a brand-new Suzuki on my boat in Florida I got receipts pretty sure no Title in the paperwork Ohio is strict
You’re preaching to the choir my brother
Your labor is worth $$ so say $90 an hour and it takes you 5 hrs to do everything the difference between you gross profit and your labor is your net profit which looks to be $1K.
@@mlhm5 yeah, labor definitely has a cost associated with it- but truth be told I prefer to spend my free time tinkering in the garage anyways so might as well tinker on something that makes me money!
The labor part, that's fun and improving your knowledge base. It only has value to you and shouldn't factor into the price.
So I have a v6 150hp XP evenrude outboard, it seems to usually start and run good out of water, but when I put it in the water it starts fine but when I put it in gear it as soon as there’s a load put on it and the bow starts to lift its Boggs out, would anyone know what the problem could be?
@@OpenAirAdventures18 make sure no water in fuel and no leaks in the fuel system, then I would clean your carbs. Seems like dirty high speed carb jet to me / engine not getting enough fuel. However, those engines also run very well with a cylinder that isn’t firing and you won’t know until it’s under load. I’d make sure all of your cylinders are sparking and firing properly as well
@ yes I’ve got all those down I’ve checked spark and compression and cleaned the carbs twice, instead of cleaning them do you think it would be better to buy a carb rebuild kit instead
Happened to me. Changed spark plugs. Fine. Could be many things though.
@@OpenAirAdventures18 a rebuild certainly wouldn’t hurt but if all of the gaskets / needles / jets / valves float were in good shape you shouldn’t have any issue reusing the old parts. You could also try to raise the idle speed on your carbs. Make sure they’re linked and the butterflies are opening and closing at the same time as well
@ thanks

A title for the outboard motor??? Wtf Ohio…Question: why don’t you use the filters and look by category > vehicles > boats?
@@jibbymcbeet 2 great questions- yes 1. Ohio is drunk and needs to work on their goofy title laws 😂 2. Yes that’s a good idea at the start to train your algorithm but I’ve seen cases where some people selling boats do not put them in the proper category when making the listing- so I’d rather just go off my algorithm which really knows I want to see boats.. that’s just what works for me! But yeah filtering will be great most of the time

@GameBoy-we9cm thank you!
@@BoatBusters btw i have a question, i have a 25hp envinrude 2 stroke but it isn't cooling an i already replaced the impellor. So what else could it be?
@ as long as the impeller replacement was done correctly, check your thermostat. Should be 3 bolts on the front of the engine. If jammed water will not be able to flow- you can test by removing the thermostat and attempting to start it up again. If water is pumping without the thermostat, then you had a bad one and can replace it for $20-30! If water still isn’t pumping after thermostat removal and you’re sure the impeller was installed correctly, you likely have some clogged water jackets inside the block. (That’s super rare though, almost 99% of the time it’s the impeller or thermostat)
@@BoatBusters i already tried to start it without the thermostat but there isn't any water Comming up.

Doesn't Ohio have a limit of title transfers a non dealer can do in a year? Like 6 or 7 as I recall?
Requiring titles for outboards is an absolute joke. In the vintage world, people hoard them and there's no way collectors have a title for their 100+ old motors 😂
@@retro_grade good question- but from my research only cars and trucks require the dealers license. I’ve called countless title offices, read every law, and contacted every watercraft government office you could think of and the unanimous answer is that there are no such limits here in the boat and outboard world. I’ve been turning far more than 10 titles per year for the last 7 years and have never been bugged about it haha
@@BoatBusters - intersting, I figured that was the case, hopefully it stays that way! My brothers in Ohio used to flip fourwheelers, and they were always concerned with the amount of titled machines they had done in a year.

Nice video and info. As a FBMP seller, I even add bullet point phrases in my listings like; "If listed it's available (because I don't answer that lazy non-serious buyer inquiry)," "No Holds," and "Cash Only - No Trades." Even with all that expressly noted, I still have to ignore the majority of the responses. I think the best "No thanks" replies I give are when somebody wants me to drive and meet with them a hour+++ away. Ok sure 🤣, and when I get there (if they were even to show up) they would low ball you and say "I guess you can take it all the way back home then." I know if I want to buy something off FBMP, I custom write my own reply to stand out from others. I also keep cash on hand for things I constantly search for so I can leave immediately to buy. First guy with the cash wins most of the time. I have clueless boat/motor buyer stories too. 😁
