- We walk around this late 1940s Bantam Off-road Overland Trailer build. One of our dearest friends, Chris, has been restoring this Bantam trailer (Bantam invented the Jeep!). In this video he shows us the finished product. Not only has this trailer been restored, it's been modified into an overlanding trailer. Chris walks us through each modification and explains the decisions he made in choosing equipment. Being a lovers of Jeep history, we also briefly discuss how Bantam actually invented the Jeep, but did not get the Military contract to build them during WWII, instead they were given the contract to make the trailers that were to be towed behind them.

This gives use many ideas for our own trailer build! Thanks for sharing!
Can’t wait to see what you do with yours!! Chris and start grinding on our next one this weekend.
Awesome trailer, and great walk-through!😎
Thank you so much for watching!
That was a lot of fun Will. Can’t wait to do a walk around of the next trailer build! 😁
What a beauty. Love the history of these trailers. Giving them a second life as overland trailers just feels good! Let’s see what happens with the next one!
Cool trailer , nice review.
Thank you for watching!
Sweet minimalist Overland trailer!
Thank you! I loved it so much, I convinced Chris to buy another we can restore together. Can't wait to share those vids!
I'm getting some good inspiration here! Nice work!
Right on!
I like that build. Good video👍👍👍
Thanks for watching, so glad you enjoyed it!
Sick Trailer, I need to get a trailer project!
After Chris finished this overland trailer build, we decided to buy and restore another Bantam! There's something about the history of the company that makes is a really fun project.
That’s a really cool trailer. I love the thought that went into it.
Thank you! We’re working on the next one now!!
Great videos !! Keep it up. I think you’re going to pop real soon. You got 4 new subs just in the last 20 mins I have been watching your videos
Thanks Tugger! We love making these videos, and really appreciate your support!!!
I have seen a couple of your latest videos and they were soo good that I had to go back to the beginning and start from the beginning. I just got my first 2015 JKU Sport and watching videos like yours and so many others have inspired me to build my jeep for overlanding and hit the road. Your videos are so great! Thanks for sharing your story!
I can’t tell you how cool it is to read this comment. I’m so glad you are liking the vids. Cheers!!
@@Venture2Roam Just bought my roof rack, now I am shopping for an RTT. I can't wait to camp the mountains and beaches of NC.
Do you have the V6 or the V8 Wrangler?
We have a JK with the 3.6 Pentastar.
Nice trailer 👍🏼
Chris named the trailer NEWT. NEWT is a BEAUT!
Oh that’s fancy!
😎😎😎
I need this trailer!!! 💯
It is a beauty! We're working on restoring #2 right now. Can't wait to share that project.
It’s for sale. 😁
Are you guys in the Boise Jeep club? My dad and I have now built two overlanding trailers for our Jeeps and are planning a trip to Arctic circle this summer.
Hi Jeremy! We are not in the club currently, but will check it out. That trip sounds INCREDIBLE! Hope you share the journey!
The civilian version of the Bantam trailers had a tailgate. The military trailers had a solid rear panel making the trailer water tight and able to float with 500 pounds. Military also had a lunette ring instead of a “ball” hitch.
Thanks for the info! Ours is definitely at civilian. It’s a TC3. Love having the tailgate for Overlanding.
@@Venture2Roam “One of these days” I’ll make my first You Tube vid with my M100 “Bantam Basecamp.” Or better yet, team up with your overland exploring!
Love the video! I'm currently building up a 47 Bantam Trailer for overlanding so this was cool to see. Any idea where he got that aluminum rack??
Thank you! The rack Chris used can be found on amazon here: amzn.to/3lwKOIg
I know it’s not a brand name rack...but it’s the perfect height for tents and awning, is aluminum, and rated for 800lbs. Hard to beat! Good luck with your build!
Are you comfortable with the height of your trailer when the RTT is on top. I have the same trailer with a IKAMPER 2.0 bolted and welded in we used three bars total. On the way home the bouncing made me nervous. The welds are strong everything was tight. Just curious how it is when you have your tent on top
Hi Neil - we sold this trailer to some really nice folks who mounted a Smittybilt Overlander XL to it. You might be able to see shots of it in action here on their public IG profile: @exploringwithfibro
We started renovating ANOTHER Bantam Trailer!! If you want to watch the build process, head on over to our Bantam Build Playlist: th-cam.com/play/PLv4WOiu-rUDDf7NUccBrtKJ2syWIj4Rxi.html
I literally just bought the same trailer and am planning the same thing with it. So cool to find this video. What did you do to the axle? New leaf springs or tension axle or??
So glad you found it!! We have like 8 video episodes on our current build that go through some of that stuff. On the new build we bought a new axle, but not leaf springs.
Where did you get the rack I'm looking for on just purchased an M100 Anthony it's very similar
We purchased the rack from Amazon (amzn.to/3Aeul45). However, to mount it you need to have a flat surface so we installed Angle Iron on each side.
Has this trailer been sold? I’m interested if it is still available!
This trailer was sold, but we are working on another one. You can DM us on IG @venture2roam if you want more info.
Is it a factory axle with new hubs or a new axle to have JK wheels?
Hi Andy - This project was a factory axle with custom wheel adapters for the 5 bolt pattern. However in our CURRENT DIY Bantam project we used a new custom axle with the 5 bolt pattern. The video of the new project where we use the custom axel is here: th-cam.com/video/roDVdr_ManU/w-d-xo.html I'd recommend the new axle - it was about the same price.
I'm interested in that trailer.. have him hit me up!
Will do!
Nice trailer! Can you advise the manufacturer for the aluminum and the battery on your rebuild? Thanks!
I meant to say aluminum rack. thanks.
Hi Randy - here's the link to the rack: amzn.to/3rlvYJg
Also - we just posted a video on our latest build - where go over how we installed this rack. You can find that video here: th-cam.com/video/RgTi5MSZ6FE/w-d-xo.html
good evening how are you?
I just found out about your TH-cam channel, I would like to ask you about the comment you make when explaining the preparation of the trailer, about connecting a refrigerator.
Is it possible to take a refrigerator outdoors?
What type of refrigerator do you use?
Do you have any other videos where we can see the trailer equipped with the refrigerator?
I am planning to make something similar to what you have and the topic of the refrigerator interests me a lot.
Thank you and sorry for any inconvenience this may cause you.
A greeting from Spain.
Great to hear from Spain!! We love Spain, what a beautiful country. Yes, there are refrigerators made to be outside. Some common brands are Iceco: (geni.us/icecoAPL55) that link will save you 12% on anything there. Also Dometic, Bluetti, and SetPower are common brands for these types of refrigerators.
@@Venture2Roam Thank you, I have an ARB classic, the blue and gray 47 liter model, I don't know if that would be good for going outside.
I think so, but I wouldn't know and around here it is not usually used in trailers.
How did you mount the base of the rack to the tub?
Chris used bed clamps to attach the rack. We're in the middle of doing another trailer with the same rack - and will post a video on how it mounts at the end of the month. Thank you for watching!!!
@@Venture2Roam ok. We have purchased the rack in the link and ours does not have anywhere for the clamps to go.
Chris used, and we will use again, steel angle iron bolted to the brackets on the inside of the tub. That gives a flat surface to mount the rack. DM in IG if you want to chat more.
Just wanted to follow up as we JUST finished this part of our build. 6ft Angle Irons mounted to the insides of the tub. We drilled through Angle Iron and the existing tub bracket - then bolted them into place. This provides sturdy flat surface area for the rack to clamp on. Hope your project is moving along nicely!
@@Venture2Roam awesome thank you!! I was debating just bolting it on but that makes more sense. Slow progress lol
But can you put a rooftop tent on it?
I have an opportunity to buy a trailer just like that but want to put a tent on it because i don't want to put to much on my classic jeep.
Great question. The answer is yes. We sold this trailer, and the new owners have a Smittybilt Overlander RTT on the rack (which is rated to 800lbs). You can see pics of on Instagram on the page @exploringwithfibro
@@Venture2Roam Thanks for your repply!
