Hey! MKWii TASer here. Can't even begin to imagine how much time it took to create this video, major props to you! Just wanted to correct a few statements real quick: 1:47 - There are actually 6 tracks left without ultra shortcuts. The community uses the term ultra longcut to denote tracks with key-checkpoint exploits that don't save time when compared to the fastest run that doesn't use an ultra. 3 tracks have ultra longcuts: DK's Snowboard Cross, Moonview Highway, and GCN DK Mountain. 33:54 - This is absolutely not a wall. What you highlighted is drivable road (offroad specifically). Wall collision is not drivable. 34:05 - We know exactly why the most common form of horizontal wall glitch occurs. It's got to do with this particular chunk of code and walls that are slanted at an angle greater than arccos(0.85). Also the next 2 videos you played don't have any HWG in them. 39:27 - Rapid-fire hop abuse isn't the same thing as supergrinding. There's a key distinction between the two. Supergrinding is when you utilise rapid-fire hopping to specifically build up speed. Rapid-fire hopping on its own is useful for many things outside of using it to supergrind, such as low-tricking ramps (as you mentioned). 59:39 - This technique is called a wall trick or wall bounce, not a wall cancel. Thank you for this. I've been slowly gathering entries for a massive and all-encompassing Mario Kart iceberg and I thought I had finally reached the end of my search. Thanks to this video I've added like 30 more entries to a total of 372. The iceberg will likely stay as a google sheet or an image if I feel like making that but still.
33:35 There actually IS a mii head, but ONLY if you play as a mii. This applies to other tracks as well, like the posters in coconut mall, the Luigi and Daisy statues in Daisy circuit, etc. :)
The “Waluigi Stadium is poorly designed” thing I think refers to the ramp at the end which screws players over if they get hit while jumping. Personally I quite like the track (but only the GCN and Wii versions) for its somewhat unique style.
another one of the main eu/us differences that threw me off for years because i didnt realise it was a thing is the flamerunner is called the ‘bowser bike’ which is an objectively much worse name.
this is honestly such a great video. I knew pretty much everything about the first two levels and thought "Oh well this probably isn't gonna be as good as I thought." Then tier 3+ Happened and I flipped out. Love your videosssss
I kn-I KNOW it's gonna sound a bit of a "womp womp" moment but the Daisy jumpscare man :c I have heart issues and half an hour later i'm still shaking from it. A warning or just a description would have been nice. Still love ur vids dude
Nice video was fun to watch being an avid mario kart wii player myself it was nice to hear about some more obscure random things that dont really get brought up in the community that much
I was hoping to find what I experienced on the iceberg but I guess not, once I had a race on dandelion square in Mario kart wii where the gate just after the starting line was just down so it was impossible to actually complete the race the CPU’s were just driving into the gate and doing the turns like they were driving the track but it was really weird never had it happen again
1:34:40 This is hands down my favorite part of the video I genuinely love the way you screamed those lines XD I'll come back if I need you for voice work
25:39 Mii Track Differences refers to how using a Mii replaces every statue or poster in the tracks with Mii heads, it wasn't talking about the weight class differences.
i think mii track differences is referring to the fact that when you play as a mii on certain maps, the track is changed slightly, certain objects are replaced with miis or faces on statues are swapped out for mii faces
There are more differences in the British English version of Mario Kart Wii - some karts and bikes have different names. For example, you did later mention that the "Flame Runner" is known here as the "Bowser Bike" - it might have been worth mentioning there.
The "early vehicle colors" part most likely refers to the unused multiplayer leftover versions of some vehicles having slightly different colors, models and textures (as seen in the Early Vehicles section from the TCRF page) Regarding the special ghosts, it refers to the obscure TT ghosts Nintendo distributed in Japan and Korea (as explained in the Special Ghosts section from the TCRF page)
absolutely insane video, even as someone who has been passionate about this game for countless years i learned quite a few things! there were a few quirks i wanted to elaborate on further with what i do already know 7:31 i believe km/h is an unofficial description for the base speed units that mario kart wii uses, mph is not useful here 53:59 i think this is referring to some actual inaccuracies i have personally noticed in the vehicle stats displayed in the menus, especially easy to pick up in the drift stat. for example: dolphin dasher, magikruiser, and zip zip/rapide's drift stats are not displayed correctly 57:06 beating the expert stat ghosts does not give unlocks, but unlocking them does 1:14:23 this song is Bobble Head Inspiration by Nex from OverClocked ReMix. a lot of oc remix songs are extremely good and absolute hidden gems. the ctgp revolution channel banner music was also an oc remix song, Fleeting Ecstasy by Ben Briggs 1:26:35 im guessing this actually refers to the cc probabilties online. in rooms filled with players with lower VR or race rating, there is a higher chance of 100cc being picked. obviously 100cc is slower and more boring but it also makes some shortcuts harder or impossible also i was a little disappointed that the iceberg never mentioned RMCC, a version of mkwii for the unreleased iQue Wii in mainland china. it is entirely possible it still exists as we were able to get the entire ique wii system menu through leaks, but no luck yet. and wheres chadderz doing the macarena, huh? thats pretty important i think. im very glad cowboy jed got his share of mention cuz he is the most important person to all of mario kart wii's history
Thanks for the feedback! I'm going to make a giant pinned comment at some point with everything people can find. I had proofwatchers and stuff like that but things do slip through the cracks.
I believe that km/h is just standard because mr bean is british. I know some TASers are particular about using units per frame instead of km/h. mi/hr would end up being the exact same as km/h because neither of those titles are accurate to what the in-game velocity means. I assume km/h was used so that you (the player) get an intuitive sense of how fast the character is moving and consequentially how big the racetrack is.
What I want in a new Mario Kart game is 8 Cups worth of new tracks, and then once you beat all those cups you unlock every single old track from all Mario karts (even the originals from Tour)
I can only imagine the massive amount of work it took to create this video, and going even further to provide all of the corrections is greatly appreciated. Thank you! If you are interested, there is a lot of backstory behind the Desert Hills Backwards Shortcut (52:48). I joined the MKW community in early 2020 because I was inspired to find my own ultra shortcut, and this exploit was the first thing I found. Yet, I was unaware it was already known, and had already been dismissed as slower. I theorized it as an ultra shortcut because I was new and didn't understand the criteria for ultras yet. Basically, it uses a different checkpoint exploit than an ultra, and therefore could never be an ultra. It only gained notoriety as a potential shortcut when I went a step further and combined the exploit with the additional backwards shortcut shown at 53:10, which apparently, no one had seriously considered. However, this was versus only as you state. This is because it requires obtaining an item after respawning, to take the backwards cut. It would have had additional value online because you could smuggle a power item into a top spot, due to position shenanigans. Unfortunately, it was these shenanigans that got the glitch banned online, making it irrelevant once more. I don't think the bagging aspect had anything to do with it, but rather the actual position bugs it caused for players. HOWEVER, plot twist! Much later, Justin found that this backwards cut was possible shroomless all along, with a simple well-timed hop. I don't know how I missed this. Regardless, this finally made it viable once again, but this time for time trials. This is a lap 3 exclusive shortcut, as you need to do it after already using all three shrooms. Otherwise, you'd lose them when you respawn. Despite all of this, no one has used it in a world record yet, nor is anyone really attempting it due to its obscurity. I'm pretty sure a skilled player could get a WR with this, and this story won't truly end until they do... The actual ultra shortcut, found much later, only saves time for a fast lap record, so the backwards shortcut remains on top for regular records. Not to mention, the actual ultra shortcut is also extremely difficult and has only been done with TAS, although it is theoretically humanly possible and one person has gotten close, 117james. He is the only person to actively attempt this glitch due to diminished interest in flap records, combined with the difficulty. All of this to say, a week or so after Desert Hills, I was also the person to discover that overhang in the invisible wall in Mario Raceway, which led to an actual ultra shortcut. It was an insane turn of events for my first few weeks in the community... I make custom tracks now btw lol P.S. I'm glad you got use out of my replay glitch video as well, I'd definitely recommend trying it out. I should note I did not originally find that glitch, but I did figure out how to set it up consistently, as well as documenting the few interesting side effects you mentioned.
Mario Kart Wii has alway been my favourite Mario Kart game, followed by Double Dash and 8 Deluxe. I love the game's aesthetic and janky charm. Coconut Mall is probably still my favourite track. It's extremely fascinating to find out about the cut content and obscure details.
The new glitch shortcut on GCN Mario Circuit in MKWii wouldn't have been possibly in "old_mario_gc_hayasi", because the 3rd key checkpoint would be skipped. Also, in "old_mario_gc_narita", are there seriously ZERO key checkpoints apart from the starting/finish line itself?!?? Wow.
correction: "mii track differences" probably means the differences that happen on the tracks when u play as a mii, like the luigi statue in luigi circuit having a mii face (same with daisy circuit) or the yoshi sphinx in dry dry ruins

@@gmdblueWasn't it confirmed that the Nintendo soundtrack copyright claims were made by a fake company? Basically, nobody gets copyright claims from Nintendo. They get it from Nintendo of Japan or Nintendo of America or whatever. It's never just "Nintendo." This basically means Nintendo might have had nothing to do with it.
1:14:32 fun fact this was the same earthquake that I felt which was in California, I don’t remember it visually but my friend Jordan said that cole failed a wr because of an earthquake which I realized that was the same one I felt because he lived in California. And it was at night
I think 47:45 might be on about how when you play with the Wii wheel sometimes the character will have a mind of its own an drift the wrong way. Probably caused by tilting the controller too much and it goes the other way but who knows
I'm pretty sure the reason the CPUs drive backwards at 1:10:02 is because in mario kart wii, the paths CPUs follow are set by points, with a line automatically created between each point that tells the CPU where to go. They made it so that the line from the last point goes straight back to the first point. Normally not a problem since the last point should be right before the first point. But here, the points dont go around the whole track, so the line connecting the last point to the first point at the beginning of the track should go completely backwards and cut straight through the wall. The CPUs try following the path and end up driving backwards to get back to the first point
actually, specifically on the end credits stage, the enemy point the game treats as the 'first' one is way over on the turn before the large straight with the off-road ramp on the left; this is where the player first appears in the credit scene. most of the enemy points that are connected backwards were manually re-connected to points near the start line; they needed to connect the points to something, since if you have a point that doesn't link to anything past it the game crashes, but their decision to link them specifically to the start line are is intentional and also kind of random-seeming. the points they chose to link to happened to be points with no *previous* link (which is normally fine, at least in this scenario, there's plenty of others on the tracks) so my guess is they just wanted to give those points a link so there weren't too many points without prior links in case that would cause problems down the line. interestingly, there is one route that does what you said; the route doesn't snap backwards like the others, and instead drives forwards a bit more before linking back to point 0, resulting in it ramming into a wall further along that section of the track. in the timestamp you mentioned, mario (who i believe would be the player's character / gp winner in this footage) hits that route and drives off instead of turning around like the others
54:40 As a Dutch person, I can actually say that this was the case for a lot of Wii games. Wii Party is the only example I can think of right now of a first-party Wii game actually having a Dutch localization available. Mario Kart 7 would be the first game to include one, and I can remember seeing Mario Kart in Dutch for the first time - it blew my mind.
This is one of my favorite iceberg videos yet... scrolled through some of the correction doc and yeah... also I was told Marty was green due to lighting but that might have been an efficient way to show Marty as green efficiently in-engine because Kaze knows Nintendo did not know a bunch of programming science, much of which was found later... anyway realllly enjoyed this one, Wii is the one out of 8 I've played the least, found Troy on TH-cam and found out it could be modded and so hoping to play it more
I play MKWii with the Wii wheel and on the occasion my drift goes the wrong way. It's not too common, but has cost me a few good spots in races. I feel like the main reason it happens (at least for me) is that sometimes while drifting, I have to switch directions really fast, so I hold one direction, let go of the B button, and quickly hit it again while suddenly changing what direction I'm going. Sometimes I think I don't turn the wheel fast enough. Either that or the motion sensor doesn't pick up the motion right away. Also, if you're wondering why I do this in such a way: It makes some turns easier with the jetsetter. ESPECIALLY when hitting the boost panels on that one section of Rainbow Road that's split in two neat the end. (Yes, I main that kart. No it is not easy and there are some tracks that are REALLY bad with it [looking at you, N64 DK Jungle Parkway]. And yes, my VR just recently went into the 6,000 range. I am by no means an expert but my gosh is that kart fun when you at least kinda know what you're doing with it.)
genuiinely bro yeah I love it when people from the gd community have the same interests as me it makes me so happy (also considering mkw is my alltime fav game ever lmao)
damn i remember playing mushroom peaks back on ctgp 2.8 and thinking that was the shit,. just the idea of having a custom track was cool enough. also maps back then were made using MS Paint if i recall lol. at least the layout/minimap portion.
This is an amazing iceberg I do love Mario kart Wii it's my favourite Mario kart though 8 deluxe is a pretty close second a lot of things on this ice berg I didn't know. Also I thought I was the only one who experienced the wrong turn glitch I will be playing a completely normal game make a sharp left turn then BAM sharp right turn straight into a wall it's probably due to the fact all my Wii controllers all have there fair share of glitches but the one I use is the only one where the pointer works which is why I use that controller.
Many of the vehicles have different names for US/UK versions. The Mini Beast is Concerto, Jet Bubble is Bubble Bike, Daytripper is Royal Racer, Sneakster Is Nitrocycle, Spear is Torpedo, and there are more!
Hello! MKWii TASer here :D I decided to go through the video to see if there were any additional corrections that the first correction document missed. I'll leave the link to the document in a reply to this comment in hopes that TH-cam won't flag it as spam.
35:46 correct me if I'm wrong but what I heard on this is that someone was actually just pretending to be Nintendo and submitting these copyright claims. I wouldn't doubt it with how broken TH-cam's copyright system is.
"i want to make a shorter video" _* proceeds to make the longest video they have ever made *_ (it was worth it tho the iceberg was really enjoyable ^u^)
As someone who grew up with Mario Kart DS as one of the only games I could/would play, I could not agree more with the Airship Fortress in Mario Kart X take. Literally just objectively the most needed retro track imo
@@gmdblue Oh absolutlysame here but I would be humungously disappointed if it ends up not happening because if its remake in 7 and tour but ig we'll have to wait and see either next year or sometime this year
Jet bubble did not have the and has yet to have a wr the iceberg was referencing that the jet bubble is the last inward bike to not have a world record at some point in the game, great video regardless tho
47:13 on any track that has minimal jumps the daisy mach bike is objectively faster because of it's better turning and having an equal speed stat. Its not even a question wether it's viable or not it just is better on some tracks than funky flame runner. The only difference of note is the wheight making jumps higher and collisions more punishing. Sometimes the jump height is actually better as well, so the people who think it unviable are genuinely delusional.
some of this is just not true, there are plenty of flat tracks where the flame runner holds the record, and that's because funky flame literally goes faster than daisy Mach. Mach bike benefits on tracks where there are lots of (sharp) turns where the vehicle can utilise its higher drift and mini turbo stat.

another one of the main eu/us differences that threw me off for years because i didnt realise it was a thing is the flamerunner is called the ‘bowser bike’ which is an objectively much worse name.
Yeah but it is in fact a 'bowser bike'
Its litterally a bike that looks like bowser

this is honestly such a great video. I knew pretty much everything about the first two levels and thought "Oh well this probably isn't gonna be as good as I thought." Then tier 3+ Happened and I flipped out. Love your videosssss
Had a short work shift today, and this video happened to pop up in my recommended. Getting me through work is 100% worth a sub. Good vid! :)
Nicely done.

This is hands down my favorite part of the video
I genuinely love the way you screamed those lines XD

1:01:48 that record is only for the Jet Bubble, the actual world record with any vehicle is about 7 seconds faster on the Flame Runner
i think mii track differences is referring to the fact that when you play as a mii on certain maps, the track is changed slightly, certain objects are replaced with miis or faces on statues are swapped out for mii faces
Was scoping for another iceberg you from and thought I missed this one haha

people complaining about the jumpscare but tbh i expected it to play out all the way and idk how you couldnt like just know and turn it down LOL
I opened this vid just to see if my childhood trauma was actually included 🤣
There are more differences in the British English version of Mario Kart Wii - some karts and bikes have different names. For example, you did later mention that the "Flame Runner" is known here as the "Bowser Bike" - it might have been worth mentioning there.
The "early vehicle colors" part most likely refers to the unused multiplayer leftover versions of some vehicles having slightly different colors, models and textures (as seen in the Early Vehicles section from the TCRF page)
Regarding the special ghosts, it refers to the obscure TT ghosts Nintendo distributed in Japan and Korea (as explained in the Special Ghosts section from the TCRF page)
absolutely insane video, even as someone who has been passionate about this game for countless years i learned quite a few things! there were a few quirks i wanted to elaborate on further with what i do already know
7:31 i believe km/h is an unofficial description for the base speed units that mario kart wii uses, mph is not useful here
53:59 i think this is referring to some actual inaccuracies i have personally noticed in the vehicle stats displayed in the menus, especially easy to pick up in the drift stat. for example: dolphin dasher, magikruiser, and zip zip/rapide's drift stats are not displayed correctly
57:06 beating the expert stat ghosts does not give unlocks, but unlocking them does
1:14:23 this song is Bobble Head Inspiration by Nex from OverClocked ReMix. a lot of oc remix songs are extremely good and absolute hidden gems. the ctgp revolution channel banner music was also an oc remix song, Fleeting Ecstasy by Ben Briggs
1:26:35 im guessing this actually refers to the cc probabilties online. in rooms filled with players with lower VR or race rating, there is a higher chance of 100cc being picked. obviously 100cc is slower and more boring but it also makes some shortcuts harder or impossible
also i was a little disappointed that the iceberg never mentioned RMCC, a version of mkwii for the unreleased iQue Wii in mainland china. it is entirely possible it still exists as we were able to get the entire ique wii system menu through leaks, but no luck yet. and wheres chadderz doing the macarena, huh? thats pretty important i think.
im very glad cowboy jed got his share of mention cuz he is the most important person to all of mario kart wii's history

I make custom tracks now btw lol
P.S. I'm glad you got use out of my replay glitch video as well, I'd definitely recommend trying it out. I should note I did not originally find that glitch, but I did figure out how to set it up consistently, as well as documenting the few interesting side effects you mentioned.
Hey! Thanks for watching man, it means a lot to hear from dedicated people in the community
Mario Kart Wii has alway been my favourite Mario Kart game, followed by Double Dash and 8 Deluxe. I love the game's aesthetic and janky charm. Coconut Mall is probably still my favourite track. It's extremely fascinating to find out about the cut content and obscure details.
But did Mario say "SpongeBob," though?!
Discuss.
I think mario said spongebob
Maybe he said mamma?
Maybe he said "Pacman"
new nintendo video documentary dropped, time to take a nap
Was kind of surprised to not see anything about being able to fall beneath maple treeway, unless I fell asleep and missed it at some point
Wow.
I can't believe Badger from Breaking Bad took a break from being a hitman to explain the intricacies of Mario Kart Wii.
correction: "mii track differences" probably means the differences that happen on the tracks when u play as a mii, like the luigi statue in luigi circuit having a mii face (same with daisy circuit) or the yoshi sphinx in dry dry ruins
Holy moly this is gonna be a banger
Sorry about the occasional flickering in the video. I think I got unlucky with hardware as I recently built a new PC, and I tried re-rendering this like 6-7 times to fix it but I literally can't do it, so it is what it is. Really wish it wasn't there, I had no problems with the Luigi's Mansion video, so I don't know what happened here.

I completely agree that the bloom effect is WAY too obnoxious. Just makes it look like my glasses are smudgy.
Or like there's fog on every track.

A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.
This is one of my favorite iceberg videos yet... scrolled through some of the correction doc and yeah... also I was told Marty was green due to lighting but that might have been an efficient way to show Marty as green efficiently in-engine because Kaze knows Nintendo did not know a bunch of programming science, much of which was found later... anyway realllly enjoyed this one, Wii is the one out of 8 I've played the least, found Troy on TH-cam and found out it could be modded and so hoping to play it more
We should’ve gotten 3 Mii’s, a small, medium, and large, then make that final slot at the bottom of character select be a random select
