  • On June 17th, 2021, I visited Port Inland, Michigan to shoot railroad operations at Carmeuse Lime & Stone. This rarely shot mining railroad uses classic SD20 and SD45 locomotives to transport limestone from the quarry to the port. Come take a quick look at these interesting limestone trains!

      They didn’t like us being there, so we left. I’d like to go back eventually though.

    This is the first time I’ve even heard of this little railroad. I really like the design of their cars lol.

    Thank you for documenting this operation, Sam! I would never have known of its existence without your video. That is a neat little engineer's cab that they have on the end side-dump car. When I first saw the engineer's cab at the end of the side-dump car, I had to do a double take and I had to ask myself if I was seeing what I thought I saw. I am glad that you took the time to seek out this railroad operation to share with us!

      The neat little engineer cab was used prior to the diesel engine. The train was electric with cable running overhead, this little engineer cab was where the electric motor was. The train ran from limestone quarry to the mill. The electric train could only hall eight cars, the diesel halls 20.

    Interesting to see solar panels on the train engines and train cars.

    I love mining railroads basic that's it I love that. Also to have that job driving the train to and form all day I mean this is the kind of job I would love to have.

    These mining railroads are super underrated. Amazing variety in unique and old equipment, like that limestone gondola cab car! Of course, these are very remote areas that they operate in so I can't be that surprised that not many people have gone out to film them, haha. Great catches!

    What about the tiny little pusher thingy on the back? It looks like what would happen if a trackmobile and a locomotive accidently had a kid.

      @KatzStudiosMedia 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is basically a caboose, and allows the operator to operate the train without turning it physically around. I am fairly certain certain these trains are run with one person crews.

      @SamLovesTrains  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think they are used as shoving platforms so the engine doesn’t have to be moved to the back of the train.

    Cool to see the New York & Des Moines Railroad coming soon to North America pretty soon! The NYDM is both an electric and diesel freight railroad. It’s also the 14th new Class 1 railroad in North America that is replacing Kansas City Southern.

      The only electric freight railroad (at least, the only common carrier) in the US is the Iowa Traction. I think you need to check your sources.

    Anyone have any info on how often/how much traffic is interchanged with CN? I suspect it was very little until Graymont built their plant at Port Inland roughly 10 years ago. Aerial photos now typically show about 12 covered hoppers at the Graymont plant. I assume Carmeuse does the switching since they own the "mainline".

    • @SamLovesTrains
      @SamLovesTrains  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don’t think they interchange with CN often, if at all. Maybe when picking up/dropping off locomotives.

    • @stevehorton2003
      @stevehorton2003 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Aerial photos from 2010, 2013 and 2016 show covered hoppers on the interchange tracks. I haven't run across any newer photos that that. I suspect interchange is still occurring, although Graymont could have switched exclusively to trucks. But its hard to confirm given the limited public access to the area. Great video by the way.
