      Great video! But if you imagine yourself in the Amazon rainforest while listening to Villa Lobos... I would just like to point out I doubt Villa Lobos even ever went anywhere near the Amazon rainforest. The background for his works was much more inspired by the metropolitan atmosphere of Rio de Janeiro, a decadent metropolis ravaged by poverty and crime and the southeastern Brazil countryside, which looks a lot like the stereotypical American "South" with folkish rednecks but with less racism. He also has some pieces inspired by Northeastern Brazil culture, which I could only summarize as something like the Wild West...all of these places are closer to Africa to anywhere near the Amazon. Just a tip ;P

      During the pandemic I had more time and after 20 years of not studying I started learning again. This time, the modern way, choosing repertoire on TH-cam and Spotify and then buying or downloading the scores on the Internet. Next thing I knew I bought a Tonebase subscription. It's incredible, I truly recommend it. If you have the time, you can learn so much.. Villa-Lobos was probably the greatest Brazilian composer for solo guitar (and more) but I feel that not enough people play Garoto. Paulo Bellinatti recovered his incredible work. The fingerings are challenging for players only used to play classical guitar as they require sometimes the use of 5 fingers on the right hand or semi bars with the left hand. Easier if you have played jazz or bossa nova before. I wish you play some of his music so that more people give it the deserved credit as he passed too young and kind of was forgotten. He has some virtuoso pieces but all of it is extremely beautiful. From Garotos compositions Villa Lobos most cherished Debussyana. Check it out !

      For me, it's one of the reasons I actually left classical guitar. It was just too demanding and I realised it wasn't the music I wanted to dedicate myself to. Still love listening though, the music is beautiful. But it was just too frustrating, especially since it was pre-internet days and the only Villa-Lobos I had available was just a bit of sheet music. Still play guitar, play music that I enjoy... but a part of me still wishes I could be the kind of guy that could just pick up a guitar and play a flawless Étude 7.

    • @Muenzenundmehr
      @Muenzenundmehr ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@mejsjalv my teacher always tells me, Villa Lobos is actually easy , because it is written for guitar. All the fingerings are more or less logical and good to remember. You only have to practise VERY SLOW ! If you can Play it slow, you can play it fast. Dedicate your self to the Instrument ,the classical guitar itself and not to a specific Music and you will be able to play anything.

    Heitor Villa-Lobos is one of the most popular Brazilian composers. He was a pianist, but he knew the guitar very well. He wrote 12 Etudes for guitar and a lot of Choros and Preludes. For me, this etudes are very helpful because I can improve my technic and both hands. This is my suggestion for this video: in my opinion, Level 5 can be also Etude 3, because this etude is very good for left hand and it has a lot of legatos, and for Level 4 Etude 11. This etude is very good for practicing right hand and chords . Greetings from Serbia!

    A whole lot of years passed between my bachelors degree and my masters. As an under grad my instrument was trumpet and in grad school guitar. Richard Glenn, my instructor, turned me on to Villa-Lobos and I thank him for that. When I left school with my masters and a teaching credential the only gig I could get was both teaching and playing piano which destroyed my right hand finger nails and guitar technique. At 76 I am trying to get those nails back so I can enjoy playing again. I’m struggling with Bach and looking forward to Villa-Lobos.

    I love Villa-Lobos composing style. it is so characteristic, he sings through every guitar that plays his work

    I couldn’t agree more about Villa Lobos and the lasting legacy he gifted to the Classical guitar repertoire. He wasn’t just a prodigious composer, he simply composed the best guitar music of the 20th century. It was fresh and original, having a distinctive Brazilian character. The Spanish and Mexican composers of the same time period who wrote for the guitar pale in comparison to Villa Lobos. The Choros no. 1 was an encore favorite of Julian Bream who played it with a flair and panache that delighted audiences everywhere.

    Excellent vid. I’m self taught guitar lover in love with Villa Lobos and bossa nova since young. Even if I cannot play correctly, I can still learn a great deal. I keep practicing the 1st Etude, and I m working on 11, 8 and eventually I will get to 12. We’ll see from there.
    I started with blues and rock, and I am learning a bit of jazz which connects nicely with the Brazilian guitar apparently. It’s fun and fascinating and frustrating. But I love the challenge.
    Thanks for the video.

    Thanks for the video, i'm brazillian myself and what made me start to learn the classical guitar was a Villa Lobos presentation I saw when I was at highschool, where the guy played the 5 preludes and explained the influences villa lobos had when composing them.
    I highly reccomend checking out the Sergio and Odair Assad interpretations of his works

    I suspect Lucas has so many subscribers partly because of his humor and his lampoons of simplistic popular music. However, as we can see (and hear) in this and in the other videos in which he discusses the great classical guitar composers (and in various other videos in which he plays seriously -- whether jazz or classical -- he is a superb classical guitarist, with fantastic tone and technique. This is only achieved by a few, and only after many years of dedicated study. I would love to hear him play seriously more often ... perhaps some concerts in which he can really show us what he can do... Perhaps not all of his subscribers would follow him down this path, but I suspect many of us would.

    Me encantó el vídeo, y eres demasiado bueno. Yo que soy principiante en la guitarra. Solo me queda la admiración y el trabajo duro de practicar la guitarra que has hecho. Saludos desde Guatemala! 🇬🇹🇬🇹

    Wow, I've never heard about the mazurka piece by Villa-Lobos. Your interpretation is wonderful indeed... And yes, it sounds like Villa-Lobos and Chopin had a nice cup cafe and enjoyed composing together for a while.
    Wonderful video!!! Subscribed!!!
