Barrios was interested not only in music, but also approached philosophy, poetry, and theology. In addition to Spanish and Guaraní, the native language of Paraguay, he spoke English, German and French. A genius!

La catedral. When i first heard this song it changed me completely i went from being a metal lover to a classical lover. ive been playing electric for about 15 years and loved it a lot. But this song changed me to the point now all i want to do is play classical. O sea no creo exagerar.

The 2nd movement, not the 1st one, of "La Catedral" is inspired by Bach, by the sounds of the organ in the cathedral of Montevideo, Uruguay.
That's the reason, why the 2nd movement is called "Andante religioso", so an Andante in a religious mood.
The 1st movement was later edited by Barrios and was written for his wife, when he was in Havanna, Cuba.

He was given a quest by his goddess in a spiritual vision. He said that she gifted him with a wooden box with silver moon beam stretched across it. She called it a little box of mysteries. She tasked him with the job of taking for himself this box of mystery and to learn all of its secrets. I think he did it well. In fact, I think he did it to perfection. He is, hands-down, my absolute favorite classical guitar composer of all time. Iacy must have surely been pleased. Descanse en paz, maestro. Se le recuerda muy bien.

Thanks Lucas, it's great that you are introducing many people to the great Barrios. If first heard him on BBC world service (short wave!) in 1978, and recorded JW on my tape-radio. Them I learnt some of the pieces by rewinding the tape many times. I didn't know Stover's transcriptions were available already!

Thank you for placing the 3rd movement at level 5. It is comforting and encouraging to be reminded I am, at the very least, finally flailing around in the deep end of the pool when resistance to practice is high..as it was just this morning with this movement and my 3rd finger refused to cooperate at the start of bar 6 unless I let my pinky fly around in the air.

The concept, of presenting "levels" here, is very good. Not seen before at least by me. The playing of first order. But what I found best is playing the "julia" at a tempo, and with an expressiveness that I found opened the piece to new levels of emotional expression. From me , Bravo....Robert Jackson

I have a legend for this series, It is Atahualpa Yupanqui, is a incredible guitarrist from Argentina, Buenos Aires, he born in Juan A. de la Peña, a locality from Pergamino. He is a important musician for Argentina and Latam, and he was left handed, however in most of the time he played the guitar, not in the acoustic hole, but rather near the end of the neck, that's why its sound is very special. His repertoire is so beatiful and it's full of classical argentinian folk music or how we call Folclore. To hear it I recommend you to listen an his arragement of the chacarera La Humilde, Danza de la paloma enamorada and Zamba de Vargas.

And I’ve really enjoyed the background you give with the pieces…something most often overlooked. The Levels is a great concept in short format. Great to get an idea of a composer. Big thank you!
