compression has its place but you dont need much of it really. Its only special with how you use it and when you decide to use it. compression is the highway to hell on screwing up your mixes.
this is a good technique, the ableton stock saturation is dope, got features like soft clipping, analog clipping, digital clipping and much more i just mixed my kick drum now it was really peaky, the peaks were too much, the average volume was low and this saturator helped in the output knob i put my desired volume to -12 and started driving my kick until the peaks started getting tamed and boom!
Great video and demonstration. Just one thing: Your compressor wasn’t compressing the transient because you had it set to RMS mode instead of PEAK. This means even with a fast attack time, the compressor will ignore the transient. But even if you’d used the PEAK function, a saturator will perform peak control better. The alternative is clipping, if you don’t want the added colour from saturation :)
Thank you so much for the message. You are right I realized it months later as I was doing some experiments. In peak mode it would have been better. Speaking of saturation and clipping, lately I'm using Standard Clip by SIR Audio, which works reeeally well for the purpose! Hug!
Tried saturator last night on drums, it definitely does the job of a peak limiter/ hard compression but with nicer sounding results. Tried it on master bus, give the sound an edgy Prodigy vibe.
after that throw a transient designer on there add like 1-2 on the designer to get the transient back then hard clip 1 db. You get it louder, get the transient snap back, but then get a reduced peak still.
Your Compressor was in RMS mode instead of Peak mode and you also turned of the lookahead, I think both things would improve the result or not? Anyway, thank you for the advice, cheers
@@pineapplethefruitdude5553 thanks for telling me this, actually i forgot about changing to peak mode. And also thanks for telling us that even with Peak Mode doesn't work very well..cheers!
@@distillednoise Man you are so right, I was so sure I can compress harsh percussions but maybe it never worked out lol. I even tried the Ozone neutron and several other compressors. The only one that worked is a free one from Airwindows. It is called "compressaturator" and as you can expect it works with saturation as well. Very important lesson for me today! Of course limiters do the job as well, but you also loose character for sure. Which is the quickest vst compressor you can think of? Again thanks for the vid!
@@pineapplethefruitdude5553 I really like LA 2A and 1176 and also the Waves SSL comp. I also use al lot the Fab Filter pro C2. But for the most part I just use the glue compressor by ableton
I think they work in different ways, so yes, probably you reduce the peak, but the sound also loses his attack energy a bit (especially with transient shaper). IMO
Took 4 minutes to get to the topic mentioned in the title. Would appreciate less explaining what a compressor does and more focus on the saturator. Or at least add chapters. Just some advice, appreciate you sharing your knowledge nonetheless. Keep it up
Most of the producers miss why it's important to treat sounds in that way, so the introductory part was made for that. Saturation is simply distortion, and distortion reduces the dynamic of a sound cause it happens when you boost the volume to the point that there is no more headroom and you start loosing details on the sound. Saturation is simply a gentler type of distortion. All the settings you see on ableton saturator are simply different types of saturation and personally i've never went to deep on them. But i think you can find resources about Ableton Saturator on You Tube. Cheers
This honestly needs more views. People rave about compression way too much.

Really helpful, this is another secret to get louder mastering after mixing❤

Amazing!! And yes i use the stock ableton saturation pretty much for everything!

I remembered to watch your videos cause one of your songs played on shuffle on my playlist... you have an awesome sound!!!
Thanks man 💙💙💙

very nice example. Thanks for that mate!
cool Francesco, will certainly give it a try! thanks =)
Thanks a lot! :) keep the great content!
Thanks Joao!

Thanks for the tip!! Will try!!
Nice option 💪🏼👍🏻
great tip !!!! thxxxxxxx
Useful information !!!
A (hard) clipper helps a lot with this too.
Yes! I am using a plugin called Standard Clip now
Awesome video
Another super helpfull vid Francesco, thanks! May I ask you the use ozone maximizer threshold here? Why did you set it that far?
because it depends on the input level..I wanted to push until i got some limiting!
Be good to see an oscilloscope while you are doing these awesome videos. Thanks btw

Ok I tried it. Doesnt change anything. I will try it with another compressor just because I´m curious

is there anyone else whose audio gets drastically different when this saturation trick is done
It might be that u are pushing the drive too much or you have all the others parameters set differently
OOOOOOOOOHHHH
You can do this whit transient shaper o directly with a limiter on the channel

This.
Ma te vieni mai a caposile? Ho trovato i tuoi video sentito l'accento e non mi sembri una faccia nuova 😅
Sono venuto una volta ma prima del covid! Però prima di fine estate vengo!
