I love the contrast between the gameplay and story. Everything in the gameplay insentivises you to view people as targets and walking cash-assets, min-maxing your AC to become a walking war-crime machine...and the story is all about human connection in the face of cold and emotionless forces larger than yourself.
I'm really glad that ARMORED CORE is getting its flowers even in the current era. It's amusing since the franchise used to be what floated FromSoft's passion projects but now it has become the passion project. Previous AC titles are all pretty good, though I think I am most fond of Armored Core 4Answer.
What surprised me most was the route they went with the story and how they controlled the experience. They could have ballooned out the plot to try and chase the Dune-inspirations harder but instead focused on developing the cast they had and the conflict between; There’s the Frankenstein-adjacent conflict between the player and Ayre - whether you shun someone you helped realize or trust them; the slow and subtle development of Walter as someone you can respect even if your principals mean you’ll betray his goal; Iguazu’s jealousy based off illusions of freedom and Rusty’s back-and-forth from rival to ally. . . It was a sleeper hit in terms of story to me. I’m excited to see where they take it next, what the flavour of conflict’ll be and what cast we’ll have. It may take the top spot in terms of Fromsoftware’s stories, though Sekiro will remain a close second.
I was in the same boat, honestly. Have never been one for the mecha genre and only know of the Gundam subgenre from afar, and yet I loved AC6 to pieces, from the gameplay and customization to the characters and the very rich story. The iceberg of AC6's story is just so deep and references a lot of elements from history, as Fromsoftware's other standalone titles tend to do. Gives you a lot to think about (and cry about, too)! Happy to hear Yamamura has made many a new Raven; thanks for sharing!
Glad to hear this! I had pretty much the same experience w/ AC6, picked it up only because it was fromsoft and Yamamura, despite me finding mechas the most boring thing in the world just like cars and motorbikes... It was the story, the characters, and ofc the gameplay that made me totally fall in love with this game, and I really didnt expect the story of all things to be the strongest point of the game, damn it might even be my fav story among all FS games! I loved it so much that I went back and played the two AC4 titles and although they are different I enjoyed them very much, especially for the vibes and the setting.
Literally bought AC4 just to keep riding the AC high I got hooked on. Too bad the 4 Answer is so freaking expensive, and worse... I don't have a working PS3 controller ;_;
Its currently discount on steam too. This is the good time for all Fromsoft fans(especially souls fans) and anyone who never familiar with mecha to hop on the Armored Core franchise.
Yeah, I liked the game a lot too, despite every conversation happening over voice coms, characters are surprisingly charming, my favorite being G1 Michigan, that old bastard, every single one of his lines is pure gold, if anything I wish missions were more brutal, most of them without a boss or AC enemy encounter are pretty uneventful.
An expansion for this game is most assuredly is the works. There was a job vacancy fromsoft posted looking people that can do texture work on robots a few months ago, and AC6 having update and testing done in the background. They are definitely cooking something.
Dropped AC6 for sometime for Elden Ring, and recently return back, and became absolutely obsessed with it for whatever reason, the “game” is just so good
AC6 managed to do something unbelievable- I was always fascinated by series wild customization options, but here I found out that I can kitbash to my heart’s content- I made my own version of mech from Macross, that supposed to be slow and ineffective, only to find that his pair of bazookas just teared through missions I struggled with for some time and his health pool and maneuverability were just high enough that he wouldn’t need to worry too much about faster enemies. I made around 5 builds and each was unique in its own right - the fast and fragile Nightingale that keeps showering enemies with bullets before running on them with laser dagger, medium, jumpy Silverback, designed for strong single strikes, explosive Tomahawk, standard two legged Bold Jaguar, armed to the teeth, sporting Moonlight blade and threaded Hell called “Resolution” when I absolutely positively wanted to spray and pray. And then there was a story that left me emotional and still has so many questions left unanswered - I want to know more of this dark, unfriendly husk of a planet. In the year where we got Final Fantasy XVI, Baldur’S Gate 3 and HiFi Rush, AC6 managed to stay one of my favorite games released that year
It is very cool how from has managed to make faceless characters so appealing. We never see anyone yet we form this connection to our favourites, we have a picture of what they look in our minds and i am sure we all have a different look for our faves. I am glad to hear you enjoyed ac6 and hope if you get the time, you'll take a look at the other games in the series too.
I grew up with Armored Core on the PS2. I had almost all the PS2 games. The only generations of Armored Core I haven't played are the PS1 games. Though I did have the PS1 demo disc with AC1 demo. And I never played AC5 and verdict day. Some of my favorite memories is playing AC4 and For Answer in online PvP. I enjoyed the PS2 era Armored Core but I struggled with the old control scheme as a kid. But when AC4 came out it completely changed everything. I would say AC4 is when I really started getting in to Armored Core. AC For Answer is one of my favorite games of all time. The sheer crack head speed of the 4th gen games is really fun. Armored Core was probably the franchise I wanted to come back the most. So many years of hoping and hearing insider rumors of a new game in development. I'm so glad it's finally back. And even more glad that it's sold well and gotten so much positive reception. Armored Core was always one of those games that most people either have never heard of before, or have heard of but just never played it. It never sold well at all in the west, so the fact AC6 has done so well is astonishing. No doubt due to Fromsoft's new found notoriety from the souls franchise. They are basically guaranteed to make another one. Armored Core games usually always release a numbered title, then later release a sort of sequel/expansion type game to the numbered title. Especially seeing as how AC6 basically out sold every previous AC game combined, they would be fools not to keep up this tradition.
The builds are fine in the main game and the difficulty is perfect, I don't think Fromsoft could really have changed anything because I recently replayed the game with the Rubicon's Inferno mod and making the bosses more than 2x as hard breaks that dynamic, you get forced to use lightweight + largest generator + dual Etsujinn's. It would be interesting though, I think, to see how they could push the difficulty in AC6:2 or AC7 if they low-key forced lightweight (or more typically "skilled") mechs because they already did this type of thing in Sekiro and you had to just get better to win. Although it would be unpopular I guess because I've heard others say the building is part of the fun.
id love a new game in this generation before AC7. itll let FS release another game quicker for less money since the framework is already there. itd be a total waste of resourses if they just went to 7. i really hope they get more our of AC
Seeing a new Shetani's Lair video after a hard week is such a treat. I love how there's really no schedule or standard script. It feels more like a person talking about something dear to their heart or a thing that made them feel and think. The Sekiro translations were very good, but these little think pieces and recommendations are just so neat and soothing.
Have never clicked on a video faster, as they often say! I've been looking to get into armored core afrer playing 6 and loving the story, can't wait to hear your thoughts.
I actually just got into AC again, it’s been in my backlog for a while but I got filtered by pre-patch Balteus, set the game down and then got really busy for a while. Not sure about a whole new game but I did see some news talking about a new update of some kind soon. No idea what it is, whether it’s new mission content, just more part variety, or a simple balance patch but supposedly there is “something” new coming soon.
I pretty much played most Armored Core games before AC6 came out. They all hold up really well including the PS1 games, minus the janky control schemes which are easily circumvented with emulation input mapping. FromSoft were always very bold and experimental even back then and it's most apparent in Armored Core, where they were ahead of the curve and made experiences that stood the test of time.
If you think its a bore replaying the same mission again and again for a different ending, then you'll most likely hate For Answer, as in that game, you have to playthrough 3 times to get all ending. Last Raven also has multiple endings and missions, but Gen 3 and 3.5 is a whole 'nother world of Armored Core.
I do think it has some Sekiro vibes in that the game forces you to progress, where as dark souls you can grind as much as you want. As an AC fan I was pretty skeptical about AC6 but honestly it had the best single player campaign in the series. The Multiplayer isn't even close to AC5 through, but that shit was during the peak 360 era so...
Have you try Last Raven? 3rd gen AC game on PS2. If not then if you start playing it then don't forget to do a mission name "Eliminate the enemy AC" as soon as possible. You will know that it is this mission immediately when you look at the reward.
The most important fact, it is EASY. I am the worst souls-player out there. i don't even enjoy action games all that much, but it saddens me to see that ONLY 47% players have made it to chapter V., the only true challenge ac6 offers is when you play the levels for the first time, after that, if you take your time to unlock the toys the game offers, it becomes a power fantasy, i don't think Sekiro is that forgiving, seeing the many comparisons. I still consider ending a level with mobs and a boss with 1 AP remaining in 1 attempt easy btw, once you have the loadout, you have to try to lose. As a note, i just want to thank FromSoftware personally, for not making this game punish you if you lose, i still have nightmares from the first two ac games that would lock you out of progress, hadn't played ac since 2.
Glad you picked up on the game late and end up appreciating the experience with the tiny lore bread crumbs Fromsoft sprinkled in the game Worst Case Scenario, you might be one of those who quit after being filtered by pre-nerf Balteus if you bought it on Day 1

Fires of Rubicon has the best cast of NPCs of any recent Fromsoft game. An incredible feat for a game that never shows a single human face.
I'm really glad that ARMORED CORE is getting its flowers even in the current era.

ayo this is great news, looking forward to the 6th generation being continued
i just reached chapter v and i most certainly hope so. I love the story, but the toys, oh man the toys this game gives you.....i want MORE!
i really hope there will be more armored core eventhough i cannot imagine what a dlc would be about

all of the numbered title feel more like a test before their expansion title

Thank you! It means a lot to me (っ˘ω˘ς )
I just finished my third playthrough. Couldn´t bring myself to kill MIchigan...not yet. This will be one of those games I NEED to S Rank everything!
I've cared about Armored Core since 1997.
The only time I switched build for a specific mission is when I grind for "All S Rank Missions" trophy. Aside from that. It's fashion!
This game is so so so f… good

Я тоже совершенно не планировал проходить, но раз уж такое дело - попробую)
Armored Core 6 made me feel things for a disembodied talking kool aid and a double agent named oxidized metal 😭
Let's goooo

Watch Neon Genesis Evangelion or The Vision of Escaflowne if you want good mecha anime :D
then you try pvp and.....
I got AC6 because I saw it had Gundam mods and the official gundam games are trash
