    I used to work for Lexus parts and the cost of the small parts on the bumper are financially brutal. Bumper cover, four sensors, six mounting brackets, sensor pc module, paint. Behind the cover is a Styrofoam support that snaps like a twig. Total cost all in $2000. God help you if you damage the lights, $1800 for the main beam, $78 per fog light. Everything is injection molded plastic. Nothing gives in contact. They all break into a million pieces.

    Interesting that these guys have a totally different take than other reviewers on handling, seat comfort, etc. I wish they would do more comparisons to other cars for a relative take vs just saying they like or don’t like something about a car. If a reviewer has something negative to say, they should mention a competitor model that does that thing better

    • @Taylor.Watson
      @Taylor.Watson ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This is my exact thought. They are going against everyone else but give no examples.
      Give us models, if they say the Telluride drives better they’re losing all credibility.
      The Telluride is an incredible car and does a lot of stuff better but driving is not one of them.

    • @ItzCyCy

      I own it and it’s honestly crazy how well it handles

    • @fantasyfootball804
      @fantasyfootball804 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That was my thought as well. Like if you have an X5 as you family car and therefore do not enjoy the handling of Pilot, then that's a useless take because it's not the same segment. Tell us what you think of the handling compared to telluride/palisade, highlander, pathfinder, explorer etc and which car in the segment does better.
      This was one of the most useless video I saw about the Pilot tbh.

    • @battlegroundone

      @@battlegroundone That's what I see on the 2022 owners manual. Replace timing belt at 60K miles for hot/cold weather. Did not see what's the interval for regular climate. Towing also interesting, 3500lbs max for AWD models. For more than 3500lbs "An additional ATF (automatic transmission fluid) cooler is required".

    Just purchased a 2023 Honda Pilot EX-L. It replaced a 2018 Pilot EX-L. Interested in the comments about handling. We have many roundabouts in our area and I find our 2023 goes through those roundabouts much better and more stable than the 2018 model. I have even pushed it a little thrugh those roundabouts and was pleasantly surprised on how stable it was. For those who need a higher level of handling they do make a trail sport model of the pilot and also a Passport model that should meet those needs. Info system is much improved also. A note on child seat constrains. The 2023 model's access to the anchor points is easy and does not require digging under the seat as in the 2018 model we had. Daughter would visit with small children and we would have to install child seats and the 2018 was more difficult attaching the restraints.

    I agree with you comments about size etc. Love that part . However I hope they have improved the safety systems and AIS. I’m currently driving a 2019 model and it has issues with what I would term false warnings for oncoming vehicles. The AIS (auto idle stop) system has issues identified as early as 2016 but no acknowledged until this year with a recall that provides a software update to stop it activating under unsuitable Conditions, this was in fact a safety issue as it stalled the car in traffic. The recall might be the result of a class action suit in the US.
    Honda has extended the warranty on the engine and starter motor as this may not fix the problem and might require work on its tappets to adjusted as a result of extra wear caused by the AIS system. Unfortunately they have not addressed other components in the engine drive chain such as the serpentine drive. For example on taking my vehicle in for the recall I ended up having to pay close to a thousand dollars (Canadian). This was a result of having to replace the serpentine belt and AGM battery as the dealer said they needed replacing. Obviously Honda is recognizing that extra wear and tear on the engine and impact in the battery in the recall wording but not allowing for recompense for for items wearing out earlier that normal. In my case the serpentine belt and the battery seemingly tested ok at 80,000 km but not 88,0000 km because of glazing on the belt and the battery now failing. The normal wear cycle on serpentine belts for example is 60,000-100,000 miles not km. Honda has acknowledged that the AIS does effect the battery near end of life. But allows no recompense or even prorated recompense for these items. Guess I’ll be looking at grand Toyota, KIA, and or Hyundai for my next SUV.

    Let's give Emily Thomas a little more respect on the podcast folks. I know y'all are friends and having fun, but first teasing about her discussion of the latch attachments, THEN when she does talk about driving dynamics, y'all are like, "nope, what are you talking about?!" I personally find a lot of tall SUVs drive "springy/wobbly," (#physics) and so I could very much believe Emily's critique of the new Pilot.

    For $55K, you might as well buy a MDX that starts at $51,750 for SH-AWD

    • @FirstHillSeattle
      @FirstHillSeattle ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think it depends. I'm the kind of person that likes to buy the top trim when I buy a car. For the top trim in the Pilot (which I'm showing online is the Elite trim for $52K), you are actually getting Acura's SH-AWD (Honda calls this i-VTM4), adaptive cruise control. heads up display, etc.--some of which you might not get on an MDX at that price point.

    • @fredmoss4540
      @fredmoss4540 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a great price difference.
      The Pilot has the IVTM4 Torque Vectorng AWD System. It's basically the same but they are tuned differently. At least it was in 2019 vehicles. The Acura MDX RDX tuned for more driving dynamics. The Pilot, Ridgeline, Passport not as sporty.
      However The MDX was redesign since 2019 and now Pilot so each have newer versions of their Torque Vectorng AWD Systems. But one Key factor you forget.
      The ACURA likes to drink Premium Fuel.
      So you have to factor that into ownership.

  • @Buc_Stops_Here
    @Buc_Stops_Here ปีที่แล้ว

    The bumper question is a good one, but the "bumper" is behind the plastic which encases modern cars. The plastic breaks, the sensors are damaged, the bumper in a hard enough tap is damaged, and replacement now costs as much as $2000. On the older cars with the metal bumpers you could see the cost to get it fixed was nothing compared to the technology laden bumpers of today. A small 5 mph tap is very expensive now unfortunately. CR is very good to tell the story about the bumper basher - I remember that test years ago, and I wondered about the cost - knowing now it was costing them in excess of $50,000 a year in the end just says it all.

  • @mark8684
    @mark8684 ปีที่แล้ว

    CR failed to mention what makes this Pilot (and corporate cousin Acura MDX) such a great driving SUV, and that is the I-VTM4 all wheel drive system. It’s ability to transfer 70% of engine torque to the rear wheels and 100% of that to either side is unique among all SUVs in this class. When accelerating into a RH or LH turn, or out of a curve, it feels like a rear wheel drive vehicle! It’s unlike any other FWD based vehicle I’ve driven.
    The one real negative issue with this new Pilot is the small size (7” or 9”) of the infotainment screen, which is not competitive!

  • @jsfbay1
    @jsfbay1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks for addressing my question regarding bumpers and gov't requirements. So you're telling me that somehow, the auto industry lobbied the agency that made the 2.5 mph bumper rule to not apply it to SUVs, the biggest selling segment in the country? Good grief Charlie Brown! Maybe you guys should lobby whoever makes these rules to apply them to SUVs?

    Definitely over price. I drove the trail sport and the touring. The 9 inch screen is not as good as from
    other manufacturers. The trail sport rides well but there is noise coming through the cabin. I thought it would be better insulated from the road. The dealership wanted $53,500.00 including state tax.

      You realize "every other reviewer" spent like an hour with this car so far, right? At least CR just calls it a "first drive" whereas all the bloggers and youtubers clamor for clicks and give snap verdicts. Every new car to those people is the best fill-in-the-blank. And they get paid to review the cars. Dunno why you're falling for it. Besides, it's probably gonna score really high in CR anyway. The article says they made "big strides." Just one person here said they thought it didn't handle great.

    Imo, the Pathfinder looks a lot better in all its angles than the Pilot. The same is true in the interior. My preferred placement of ac vents on the second and third row seats is on the headliner, which the Pathfinder has. Wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto are also standard on the Pathfinder and not on Pilot. The Pilot looks really boxy, and the headlights look cheap except for the DRL, and the inside is so bland. Between the two, I'd choose and buy a Pathfinder.

      Don’t hold your breath for a similar redesigned Passport; I’m not convinced Honda will offer it due to sales volume. All the manufacturers are prioritizing compact and larger 3-row SUVs today. The midsize 2-row SUVs are getting left behind. For example, Cadillac is not going to offer the next generation XT5 in North America; it will be for the China market.
      If Honda does offer a redesigned Passport, I think it will be a 2025 MY.

      I think Ridgeline and Passport will be more TrailSport based vehicles. They might have normal TrailSport suspension as standard, then maybe something even more off-road capability.
      I keep saying the Honda didn't do the development of TrailSport Pilot for Pilot.

    What will help to sell more SUV Pilot?
    Currently, the driver's Seat comes with 10-Way Power Adjustment, Including 2-way Power Lumbar Adjustment, it needs to be a 4-way Power Lumbar like the Accord, and Odyssey...???????
    Both front seats need to have all the possible adjustments like the European car
    How hard is it to add Integrated Sunshades for 3rd rows?
    Adding Magic Slide middle seating from the Odyssey will help people move the seat to the center so they can title the back of the seat to the back so they could sleep
    Adding Rear-Seat 3rd-Rows with Folding Center Armrest from the Odyssey 2010-2021 or the CR-V
    It is better without the plastic-looking on the bottom of the car. It needs to have only metal and paint, paint makes the car shine and look more like a luxury car, the Pilot deserves to be a luxury car
    The plastic-looking on the bottom of the car makes it look cheap

    Tbh id pick the pathfinder over this. It looks alot better and drives alot smoother and responds a bit more aggressively imo. with similar powertrains and fuel economy, I’d rather take that over this.

      Pathfinder uses a CVT that blows and looks like fat fly saucer. Anyone that buys a Nissan unless it's their Nissan Frontier is getting ripped off. If you bought a Toyota I could atleast understand that

      "Drives a lot smoother" isn't very descriptive - can you elaborate? I did a 24hr test drive of the latest Pathfinder. I found it a bit too trucklike in ride quality (sort of crashy over sharp bumps) although fine on regular bumps and the seats were not very comfortable. It did seem to handle pretty well for a big vehicle, but at the cost of ride comfort. It also had terrible seat heaters that didn't get very hot and the rear seats heaters didn't heat up at all. I've not had a chance to test drive the Pilot yet though for comparison.

      There was already a head to head comparison of the two vehicles the Pathfinder uses a ZF sourced 9 speed but upgraded version. The Honda Pilot redesign now uses an in-house Honda 10 speed transmission. The new Pilot also has a few other strong points over the Pathfinder. However, Pathfinder can tow more the 5,000lb Max AWD Pilot.

    It seems odd that they kept the V6, when so much competition goes turbo 4. Personally I think Honda builds a great turbo 4 - I own two. I like an NA six as much as anyone, but it makes so much sense with the direction of government regulations.

      Acura/Honda has a Turbo V6 found in Type S MDX. I knew they wouldn't use that. The regular MDX uses a V6. The Ridgeline Pickup Truck uses V6 Passport and Odyssey also. I didn't see them going away from that.

    soooo, as they are talking about the V6, the lady car expert kinda chirps..."they are behoind" as he says there is something sweet about a 6 cylinder.
    is she another hire for diversity?
    i mean, does she know anything about engines and reliability, especially a turbo vs a NA six????
    honda is "behind" because of this wonderful engine???????
    oh how CR has fallen as a trusted advisor on consumer goods and why would anybody listen to them befor spending 50K.

    • @lukerinderknecht2982

      IDK why, but it takes an especially fragile man to feel some kinda way because a woman doesn't have the same opinion about an engine. Anyway, I digress:
      1. "behoind" isn't a word.
      2. That "lady" has a name
      3. That "lady" has a freaking PhD in pediatric injury biomechanics. She's an expert in her area, but also brings a POV that many car purchasers can relate to.
      I guess if one only sees things through the narrow lens of bigotry and misogyny, then sure she brings absolutely no value or expertise to CR, so go off and call her a "diversity hire" if that makes you feel better 🥱
