I love this episode as it shows the importance that understanding how to process your catch is just as important as knowing how to catch it. Fishing from shore in the Northeast, I catch bluefish a lot, which to most is regarded as a gamey trash fish. Fun to catch, but not to eat is what most people say. But I've been eating them and found that properly bleeding the fish, and trimming the fillets of dark meat, belly meat, and chilling removes all of the gamey taste and rivals plenty of other prized catches in flavor. Great episode, think I'll go load my poles into my truck now.

From eastern Canada, no one would eat bass except a select few. I've fileted them and made beer battered fisshnchips and they had no idea. Most fish can taste good if handled by the right hands.

I agree. I've only caught one wild blue in Oklahoma. I bled it and baked it. It tasted way better than channels in my opinion, and I love me some wild channels. Taking care of the catch is important.

@@jackiekinner3826 a trope is a convention or device that establishes a predictable or stereotypical representation of a character, setting, or scenario.... dictionary.Com is your friend. Basically he's glad Steve didn't play on the old stereotypes generally assigned to southern people.

      @ShaggyRogers1 ปีที่แล้ว

@@SlavicCelery that's not a "trope", he was more referring to the stereotypes and generalizations of southern people. Such as acting they all eat "bottom feeders" and are rednecks or what have you. He already knew about the fishing methods before hand, and at most he could have acted stuck up about them, but he also does a lot of things that other "respectable hunters" don't do such as shooting tree'd mountain lions with a rifle. Any true sportsman knows that almost all the hunting/fishing regulations concerning methods etc are just there to intentionally make getting animals more inefficient. You can't try to spray 30 rounds at a group of deer to poach them if you can't be caught using a machine gun and with more than 10 rounds on your person, for example. The laws aren't in place because of any concept of "fairness" or ethic status, as anyone who actually does outdoor sports can tell you.

We use gallon milk jugs with the line tied through the handle. I can see the two liters tip up and can tell if you have a fish on better. But will fish jugs at night in lakes. And only check them every few hours. Throw them out, go run your trot lines then go back and find your jugs. After that check your other line. Get alot of soft shell turtles.

I love 💕 to fish 🎣. My dad and I done it alot as I was growing up. I was thankful for my husband who passed away last July because he loved it also. We would pole fish 🎣 but also set out nets and trout lines down the Hatchie River in Haywood county TN. He showed me something I never heard on of and that's what he put on trout lines and that's Ivory soap. I never would've believed it until I pulled up a trout line and seen catfish, bass, and others. I thought one thing that they should be clean inside. We ordered rice cakes and cheese from a Louisiana catalog. I really do miss it!

Before retirement from the Corp of engineers when we would do a pump out at the locks on the Ohio river, it was amazing how large some of the catfish were. Alot of them made these look like minnows "some 75-100 pounders" that we pulled out of the pump recesses. We would freeze them till the end of a job and have the best fish fry that any meat lovers would want to be at. Kinda miss those dive team days on the Ohio.

Loved this episode and have used all 3 methods shown. Here in south GA on the Altamaha river we call limb lines bush hooks but its the same thing. Its a great way to catch fish but if you have never done it be sure you tie your lines to flexible limbs. If you tie to a solid limb with no give to it the fish can break the line or rip the hook out much easier as they twist and hammer at it trying to escape.

Used to catch paddles years ago. Good eating. Sad to get as old as I am and see old ways change. Be safe. Love the show.

If you can find where the shad are schooling up, that’s where you toss out the jugs. Just be ready to do some work. You’ll be slinging fish in the boat and re-baiting as long as you care to keep doing it.

Louisville raised. This just took me back to the days of fishing the Ohio river with my pops

Sheesh! By the time that Mike finished cleaning the filets I swear they didn't even look like the same fish to me if I hadn't seen him do it all right there it would've looked like he served a different fish 🤣 I love Steve!

We live about 10 minutes from Elisabeth Town and have eaten at the E Town restaurant a few times before! It is funny to see you guys so close to home!

I used to love going cat fish fishing. That used to feed me all the time. From about 20 to 26 years old.

Grew up on spoonbill and graduated to catfish from the Ky Tn lake. I miss the foggy mornings and beautiful surroundings that I was able to view.

I can skin a buck, I can run a trotline, ...a country boy can survive.

I never got a lot of enjoyment out of banklines and trotlines.. but I can tell you we had a lot of great family fish fries because of their effectiveness. You still have to know the water.. you gotta know the patterns.. gotta find the hotspots.. but you can sure stock up a freezer or feed a group if things go well.
Well said on the prepwork. Landlock striper and hybrid is the same way. Properly prepped it's delicious, but in the wrong hands is low grade at best.

I just started jugline fishing and making my own trotlines and I'm doing well with it so far.
