- In this episode, MeatEater's Ryan Callaghan and Miles Nolte travel to Minnesota to learn more about, and even try to catch, big mouth buffalo. The guys build a raised casting platform on Das Boat, using supplies scavenged from the trash heap behind a local hardware store. After that, they meet Alec Lackmann, the world’s foremost expert on a fish that few people care about. Alec studies big mouth buffalo in the Detroit Lakes area and has discovered some fascinating facts about these fish: First, they live a long time. No one actually knows just how long, but the oldest specimen he’s dated was 112. Second, in the Detroit Lakes, and probably other places as well, these fish have not consistently reproduced in over 80 years. Cal and Miles tag along with Alec to help release some buffalo that he was studying in a capture pen; he fills them in on why these are such cool fish; Miles tries-unsuccessfully-to catch one of these octogenarian fish in the lake; and then they sit down with some local bow fishers to share a conversation and some beer. From there, Cal and Miles head over to the Mississippi River to try their luck on a population of river buffalo that don’t get hunted with bows and are successfully reproducing. They cap off the episode with a delicious meal of fried sucker balls. #fueledbynature

I've bowfished for buffalo, and called them buffalo carp, for years and always thought they were invasive. I'll keep shooting CARP but no longer buffalo, thank you.

As a Minnesotan, I'd like to thank the MeatEater crew for exploring something besides walleye for your show. Walleye are great eating, but there's a lot more to fishing in MN than just ol' Marble Eyes.

Yep great series. I've got a channel goin where I take trucks up into the mountains here in Canada and bag on em. We go to lots of cool backcountry lakes, should probably start fishing on the channel. Just wanna make people laugh.

Thats why disc golf is regulated by the pdga or professional disc golf association and NOT frisbee golf association. Disc golf is fun and family friendly the other reference to frisbee golf is like saying this guy is a stoner/loser.

I'm from Washington and grew up fishing the big 3 and always turned up my nose at other species. But then I got tired of combat fishing. I just wanted to enjoy the experience no matter what. Everything from sun fish, rough fish, you name, I'll fish it. Guess what? I'm filling the cooler and having a blast! Don't get me wrong. I caught my first steelhead a long time ago and the obsession stuck but I'm not limited now. And it's a good way to get beginners into fishing.
I love this conversation and we need to be having more of it. We can't continue our old ways when it's very noticeable our waterways are being overfished. That's why it's our inherent duty as sportsman, fisherman, hunters, trappers to do our part to keep sport fish, deer, etc thriving for the future.

I found this series in Season 3. I LOVE the way they give you a reason to care about the locations and bring awareness to issues that the fish in these areas are facing. I wish a lot more people cared about fish this way.
My personal experience as an adult man who taught himself to fish: Question everything! Every "trash fish" species I've tried has been absolutely delicious. Carp? Amazing thrown on the smoker whole, just a pain to debone with their Y bones. Drum/sheephead? Just as tasty as walleye. Sucker? Same deal as carp, boney but delicious.
The Rinella commentary/presentation style always has me coming back for more :)
This season has really done a phenomenal job of promoting conservation very effectively while remaining entertaining. Really really good job y'all.

I have caught some in Louisiana while crappie fishing they are a delicacy down here. You can't beat fried buffalo ribs on a Friday night.
I live in Louisiana, and was really happy they were talking about buffalo. One of the best kept secrets in fishing.
@@fappydabear1774 I used to sight fish for them with Van-do carp bait or cottonseed cake in a clear lake. You want something that will bust tackle- that's it. It's like hooking into a freight train.
This type of fishing show takes me back to when I was a kid watching those 70's fishing shows that caught fish and not just Big Mouth Bass. Bass are nice, but there are other fish that are just as fun to catch and just as good to eat. Sorry to hear only one more episode...keep'em coming!!!

I hope for the future seasons they head further west. There is an incredible history of fishing that decorates the west coast. Its so rich and dense in terms of diverse waters you can angle, and species you can pursue. For instance, in Northern California within a 250 mile Radius of Redding. I've been fishing these areas for the last 20 years and would love to see established episodes that detail the histories of these amazing fisheries.
-The Costal Redwood Steelhead runs around the 6 Rivers area.
-Upper Sacramento trout opener
-Salmon and Stripers on Sacramento River
-Huge Clear Lake large mouth bass, and why they get so big in that lake specifically
-The introduction of spotted bass to Shasta Lake , the history behind the train wreck/chemicals spill that killed off almost all of the large mouth.
-You could probably do a multiple part episode for Shasta lake alone. When full the lake has 360ish miles of shoreline.
-The McCloud arm of Shasta Lake had people coming by horse and wagon from the late 1800's all the way from San Francisco (230 miles) just to fish the Salmon that would run there.
-Big Landlocked Sturgeon that reside in the Pit River Arm of Shasta lake, there have been some monsters caught that age past 1943 when the last Pit River damn went up and Landlocked the Salmon and Sturgeon that used to traverse through the rivers before the big dam was built.
-Trinity Lake small mouth and large mouth.
-Eagle Lake and their special "eagle lake trout" species.
-Lake Almanor which has incredible smallmouth fishing as well as salmon/rainbows/brows/eagle lakes
And thats not even mentioning the Saltwater fishing you can do off the coast either...

I remember watching big buffalo fish in old quarry lakes when I was younger. The water in those quarry’s is so clear you could see everyone in there at all times.
Id like to see the boys up armored and fighting the flying silver carp in an episode.

I love the pivot to rough fish! Also, suckers are a real challenge for anglers and there are so many species to fish for! North America is the global diversity hotspot.
I've always thought there was no such thing as a rough or trash fish. I love native fish, even if they're an "ugly" Buffalo. I actually think they're so cute. They're like big Derpy goof balls.
This video makes me feel soooo bad... I have killed a lot of 80yr old fish apparently on the Mississippi River bow fishing. I always thought they were rough fish, but I guess I was wrong. Wont be making that mistake in the future. Everytime I see a video like this I realize how incompetent the DNR is in MN when it comes to fishing regulations.

how there can still be "no limit" on one of oldest and slowest-paced fish species, while the fast-paced white sucker has limit of 50, is quite frankly, astounding
Buffalo have no problem reproducing on the Mississippi River. I used to be a commercial fisherman on Pool 9 (Genoa to Lynxville). We caught buffalo in wing nets in the spring, during the flood, and then the rest of the year in gillnets. We never caught them in any number in seines, but another family of fishermen in DeSoto figured it out and successfully pulled a seine haul in the winter and caught about 75,000 pounds. My dad convinced the DNR to give him a contract to allow him to fish on state waters (the Mississippi is federal). He pulled a seine haul below the Prairie du Sac dam on the Wisconsin River and got over 30,000 pounds. The majority of the buffalo are bigmouth, but there is also a smallmouth species.
We would get one once in a while on a setline. They have a tender mouth and you only get one chance to net them, or they are gone.
It’s the same in WI. Buffalo and bowfin get no respect
This is one guys opinion and you need to take that into considferation as well and I can tell you that we have a lake that was made in the 70s that is 11k acres and we have piles of big buffs and it gets bowfished alot and they are present in huge numbers below the dam in the river as well so I think this fella has made this a problem in his own mind more so than in reality

Loved the episode. I think a good idea for another episode would be about freshwater drum. They are a tasty abundant fish yet many people don't keep them or appreciate them as much as they should be appreciated in my opinion.

In season 4 ep 13 of Meat Eater even Steve says that he was shooting Buffalo Carp. It’s a common mistake that this great show has shed light on.

Being from south Louisiana, it's always strange to see how tiny the northern Mississippi river is.
ive caught a whole bunch in a rain storm on the chippewa river in Wisconsin when i was a teenager using worms.. it was so much fun and got soaked in the rain but me and my brother didnt care.. we had a blast!!
Knowing what is in invasive carp versus a non-invasive carp is an important conversation. Common carp are non-invasive and are quality fish to pursue on a a fly. Yes, they are non-native, but so are the rainbow and brown trout we enjoy to fish for as well. Bowfishing is fun, but is destructive to almost any ecosystem due to overhunting and loose regulations mentioned by grouping fishing into to categories (gamefish vs. non-gamefish). I've personally seen countless lakes around me become desolate wastelands...no more bass, common carp, catfish, gar, etc.
I need a meat grinder for those Y boned fish. I hadn’t thought about making fish balls with them .
you dont need a meat grinder. when we gig for sucker's we score the fillets and deep fry them, cookes out the bones or makes them soft enough to eat

I’m in Michigan and I’ve yet to come across either species of Buffalo, but both are on my bucket list. People get WAY too caught up in fish like bass, walleye, trout, musky etc. I am a bass fisherman at heart, but I love hooking anything big- carp, bowfin, longnose gar etc- the fight makes the fish and the experience to me.

After trying a few times over the past three years to catch bigmouth buffalo on a fly, last week I caught my third one just south of Detroit Lakes. My goodness they get big and fight hard! I'd like to think I've figured something out, but I've often thought that about fishing, only to be disappointed later. But here's my thought: they seem to feed in the same spots night after night/year after year (assuming the river hasn't changed much). Very slow current or no current backwater. They appear toward dusk, sucking stuff off or just below the surface. Areas of foam seem to attract them. They feed in pods and are extremely skittish. They seem to have pretty good eyesight for movement on the bank and can feel vibrations from walking the bank. Stealth is key. Use a two fly rig with a choice of flies that don't sink much -- a pheasant tail worked for me -- in about a size 12. Use stout hooks. Use a new zealand wool indicator in white, because it can be big but still delicate and you can see it in the dusk/dark. Tie it close to the flies. Try to gently place the flies in front of a pod and strain your eyes to watch the indicator for movement. Bring bug spray. Hang on.
