I'll admit I wasn't much of a fan of how things were looking at first (always a big fan of darker grain the better) but after a few coats of whatever colour you put on I grew more and more fond of it! It isn't clear to know how it looks in-person but the coloring effect gave the impression of chatoyancy. Unless it really did have some. Looked great! Well done :)
Well done. The stills do show off the colour and grain very well. I am not fond of hollowing. Hollowing end grain is hard work as you experienced. I would have wanted to fix the cracks before turning. If you have pieces which have parts bigger than the depth of the banjo, consider using an electric hand planer to remove these. I purchased an electric hand planer back in the mid 80's for flat woodwork. I quickly realised the tool can remove wood very fast - however it does not make for a flat surface. I put this away for decades until I started wood turning. I now use it to remove parts of the wood which prevent using the bandsaw, or if the banjo will hit, or if the piece would be too imbalanced. The lack of flat surface for a turning blank is not a problem. Dave.
Thanks Dave, not a fan of deep hollowing either, it's going to be a while before I do another. My lathe is really not up to the task. I like the idea of using a wood plane to het rid of high spots, in the past I've ground them back with an angle grinder, works well but leaves one heck of a mess in the workshop :). Take care and talk soon. Mike
Thats really nice I like the embellishing you did I have a few big pieces like that I think I will have to give it a go once its cooler in my little shed lol
This came out really nice, Mike. I think the coloring was a good choice. I’ve not done hollowing yet, but I might look into it. And the Hope tool seems to do the job! More than 3/4 of the way to 1000! Keep up the awesome projects.
I was excited to see your first attempt at colouring it sanded away, then disappointed when you coloured it again, darker! I’ve never seen colouring done well. It always looks fake and an insult to the natural grain.
I'm surprised how much I like it lol but only because I was in agreement with your wife about no colour, but the result is amazing.
Thanks Mike 🙂
Haha I should learn to take my wife's advice more often 🤣
@@MikeHolton definitely! 🤣
Great turning Mike, loved the comment about the wife not noticing; mine would have....... Love the way you made the grain pop on this one.....
Thanks Steve, quite surprised I've not been told off yet. Then again there are that many pieces around the house shy may not have spotted it yet :)

Thanks so much Perry 😀

I wasn’t convinced by the red when you put it on, but I looked super when finished.
Artistry and experience 👍
You mean luck and good fortune :D, thanks Mick
@@MikeHolton luck and good fortune can’t be reliably repeated, I stand by my original comment 😂
@@mickwilson127 thanks ☺️
I love the colour, was an enjoyable video.
Many thanks! 😀
Stunning wood Mike! Excellent turn! ❤️
Thanks Richard, I'm slightly regretting colouring it, I guess my wife was right :)
@@MikeHolton nope! Colour worked wonderfully! Likely a bit plain without it
@@WoodWithD thanks buddy :). Wait till you see next week, it's quite different.
Awesome Mike it's beautiful 👍👍👍👍
Thanks Radar :)
Really impressive transformation, looked manky in early stages but great illustration of how the correct finish can work.
Thanks Ian, my next video is me turning another piece from this tree which is mostly rotten :D
Absolutely beautiful vase. Love it
Thanks C :)
Thanks. 👍 I’ve got a few Hope tools and I’m not disappointed. Cheers
Their specialist tools are good

Thanks, I've had to restrict my turning to the mornings as it gets pretty hot in mine as well :)
That’s cool big hollowing job!
Thanks my friend 😌
Sehr schönes Teil, klasse gemacht 👍👏
Danke Michael, ich freue mich, dass es dir gefällt und danke fürs Zuschauen
I really enjoy watching the problem solving process you go through & the creative solutions you explore!
Thanks Susannah, I really appreciate that 😀
Beautiful work! Rectally found you and subscribed. Good luck reaching your 1000 milestone!
Thanks Jeannine 🙂, that is an unfortunate but hilarious autocorrect, made my day 🤣.
That came out great! I’m not a fan of hollowing, either but it’s usually worth it. After you forget about how hard it is. 😁 nice job👍🏻
Yep, it's a pain when you are doing it, just takes so long, bud vases are the future 😃😀
Очень красивая работа! 👍
Спасибо, мой друг

The hope tool was better than expected but hollowing deep vessels is still a pain 😌
Nice finish!
Thanks, this one came out quite nice.
BOM dia linda peça achei um charme os furinhos
Incredible, thank you.
Thank you too! 😃
Nice work
Thanks Douglas, I appreciate you taking the time to comment 🙂
Mike: I like the way the stain/color set off the lighter natural color of the birch. What type of colorant do you use in the epoxy.
Hi Joseph, it was a mica powder in the resin. Thanks
Muito Sucesso sempre
Boa noite e obrigado como sempre :D
BOM dia belíssimo
Bom dia Ester 😊

It can be done well and I have done a lot better since 😀
