  • I made this log arch in last december. Haven't had the change to use it and decided to make a video about the first time working with it. Hope you enjoy! #logging #log #arch #sawmill #milling #sawmilling #DIY #homemade #DonnDIY #eestiyoutuber

    You really are a good logger, don't fight it, just do it Donn. I wish I could still get around cause I started in the logging and repairing them in 1956, we would be formidable. I could teach you how to splice cable and how to rig trees. and a host of other stuff

    We built two connecting 2-wheeler arches with electric winches connected to the ATV - hauls logs over 6m and >700kg without problem, max D=75cm. Good job, nice projects!

    Hey Donn, just found the blueprint sections and then came onto this smaller version of log arch and want to build two of these so I can haul out longer logs when needed. I also am going to be purchasing the log trailer and lifter blue prints. Sure do like your channel and have enjoyed watching you grow and become quite the fabricator and welder and machinist that you have become. Stay safe and I'll be ordering those blueprints by next month. Thanks for sharing. Fred.

      FrogAnimation au Thanks, but not my idea. There are many manufacturers today whose products have similar operating principles and I'm pretty sure even they're not the authors of this idea. But it works brilliantly - moving wet and heavy logs around by hand is no problem for a skinny guy like me. :D

    @ Stoneyburke - It was a different log arch for a tractor. The winch is for hauling several small logs at the same time - you can winch small logs up in a bunch.

      Ur welcome. It's amazing how much more weight you can move once you pick it up off the ground. You'd have a lot of trouble trying to pull a log half that size on the ground.

      Hey, thanks for the feedback! I live in a little part of what is known as the Garden Route in South Africa, we have some lovely indigenous forests here, but also plagued by wattle (exotic invaders) which suck up all the water, so I am wanting to try and utilise them for furniture - its a semi-hardwood, with a lovely grain. Very keen to build one of your logging arches to get these buggers out of the forest with minimum damage, but I can't weld... Would you be at all willing to share your design, so that I can get someone to make one up for me locally? I am sure I can find someone to do the job, just not able myself. We have just had hurricane level winds through this weekend, which has blown down a lot of these big trees here, unfortunately also made several fires here completely unmanangeable and destroyed many homes... anyway, I am hoping to make some of the damaged trees into something useful, perhaps with your help. Please email me on mail4daryl@gmail.com if you are willing. Thanks! Daryl

    amazing. I wish I could have plans of this build. the tongs are amazing. I see you took off the winch to use the tongs only?
    what diameter and length length log will this arch carry?

    • @DonnDIY
      @DonnDIY  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The plans are available here including tongs: youshouldbuildit.blogspot.com.ee/p/atvlogarch.html. I took off the tongs but didn't have the winch mounted at this point so I just pulled it with a tow strap. This arch will carry around 60 cm log in diameter (if I recall correctly) and 4 m long without dragging it.

    I guess it's okay if you don't have a tractor and it's flat ground. However on steep ground I would prefer a tractor with a winch, with that you have a long cable to pull the log out of the wood and then you can skid it away.

    • @DonnDIY
      @DonnDIY  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's for sure you can't use lightweight ATV for pulling heavy logs uphill. We have a pretty flat ground here, some gullies here and there but that's it. What I prefer working with ATV is I don't have to cut a lot of trees down to get into the woods like you'd have to do when using a tractor. The trees just naturally grow in such distance from each other so ATV can pass through them. And it's fun to ride also. ;) The old tractors we have here not so much. :D

    • @khFokke1895
      @khFokke1895 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well we have some old small tractors here that are good for maneuvering in the woods like the old Ferguson 35 and we use shop made winches mostly. However double traction sometimes is a must so a bigger tractor is needed, especially with big oak and beech logs.

    how come you did not show the time and effort it took you to winch the log up in the air. with my john deere gator i would of had that tree all bucked up and dumped at the splitter in the same time you just hooked that silly manual trailer thing up to the log.

    • @DonnDIY
      @DonnDIY  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +charles schwab I didn't winch it up, no need for a winch: th-cam.com/video/rnMwZ4ke37I/w-d-xo.htmlm37s I'm using the frame of the arch as a lever to lift the log and then attach the front of it with a chain and off I go to the sawmill. The log touches the ground only when the tree falls down and second time when it hits the sawmill. Nice and clean log. ;)
