Great video, making pens on a metal lathe is an endless pursuit, in that once you make one the ideas for new designs just keep popping up. Thanks for posting this
In a normal 3 jaw I agree...the 3 jaw on the taig with aluminum soft jaws is pretty anemic for work holding power hence the change...no other reason then that.
I have never seen anything like this before. I am totally interested in pen making ❤ Thank you for sharing this video. I have a question, what is the pen making technique called in goldsmith eg. If I want to make pens, how can I learn the art? All the best 👍
I remade this "design" and turned my aluminium pens( 4 of them ) in to tanks... You can make this pen from 2 parts (with long enough drill) and a bit shorter(115mm, fi 10.5mm) .. 3 part pen just didnt meet my tolerances(OCD for perfection)... now im planning to make Al fountain pen. Cheers mate.
Hi Nice work indeed I was mesmerised by the work and thought to give it a try too for myself. So could u plz specify the details so I could try it too in my lab .
Thanks for the kind words, the main machine here is a bench top lathe (specifically a "Taig Metalworking Lathe"). You can 100% do things like this at home :).
I noticed you didn't use any cutting compound when cutting your threads? i rarely work with aluminium, so is this just because its not needed with aluminium thread cutting. Or just because you decided not to? :)
as an amateur machinist and a newbie to these videos. I'm just curious as to why you don't use a live center on your tail-stock very much for how much material is hanging out? is it due to light cuts so nothing moves too much for keeping everything concentric or just because theirs a high tolerance?
A live center is 100% the proper way to go, the taig has limited bed space to begin with so my turning is greatly limited with a live center and is the only reason I didn't use one in this video. Light cuts help but its not the proper way to turn, this was also before I had a steady rest which I now use when extended turning is required. Thanks for the comment!
This specific one isn't for sale (little to unrefined for my likes) however I sell other thru my website, currently I have nothing in stock but that should change in the next few weeks. Feel free to drop my a message if your after something specific. Thanks for the comment!
amazing what you can do with that cheap little thing! the stuff i do on my mini lathe wich is like 5 times bigger than this, turns out crappier than this, but i'm not mad, this is amazing!
Awesome, the machine in this video is a metal lathe (specifically a metal lathe made by TaigTools), many different versions out there but that should help your googling :).
Not of this exact design (this was just made off the cuff). However I occasionally have stock on my website, www.confoundedmachine.com. Thanks for the comment!
How much did this cost to make??? As me and my friend are planning on making personalised pens out of acrylic and wood and were thinking of trying theses
Thank you Curt for the answer!) I have found 1 dealer near my region (Ukraine) Please, tell me if you are satiafied working with this tool? Can you reccomend it for making stuff for home?) Are you slavic, looking at your surname? Maybe Polish? :))
No problem my friend. Yes I am very satisfied with this lathe, if you also do small sized work (1" and smaller) then I'd suggest it...it has its shortcomings but all in all a very well made machine for the price. Great guess at Polish too, indeed what my background is :-).
Now my wife understands why we have a lathe. Thanks!

*instantly misplaces*
It's fun to see the tool deflection in a time lapse sense
Cool! You made me search through my scrap pile and make a pen too!
Very cool end product and a well-made video too. Just something satisfying about time-lapse stuff like this.
I would buy one of those if you ever decide to make more!
Nice I want one for me ... love the design and work done
One of the most satisfying video i have ever watch on youtube....on my top 3.
WOW. I love this project of making an aluminum pen
Nice work 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Now that's how you finish a video. Well done.
nice fast forward speed up techniques..so watchable vid..congrats
melvinwalter mckinneyjunior which lathe model is this and where can I buy it?
Gotta love aluminum, it's so versatile.
now search in google docs "anodizing aluminium" and become a little bit happier)

I want to make one for myself one day. Still studying mechanical engineering at a diploma level.
Did you make one?
you don't need to be a mechanical engineer for making a pen
What was the point in removing the 3 jaw chuck, putting a 4 jaw chuck up, clocking it in then to just put a dye down it?
Owen White 3 jaw lacks clamping power for thread cutting..I really didn't need to clock it tho, but it's fun!
Curt Filipowski 3 jaws don’t lack the power for clamping. Just tighten it enough and sometimes just use a pipe.
I know, so have I. I was just confused as to why he went to all that trouble just to do that, somethings in this video make me quite annoyed.
In a normal 3 jaw I agree...the 3 jaw on the taig with aluminum soft jaws is pretty anemic for work holding power hence the change...no other reason then that.
Owen White deep breaths, Owen; deep breaths.
i like your work and your lathe machine well done!!
More money than sense
Love the pen! Awesome job! But what ever that is in the background is awesome asmr!
Ha, thanks! I believe it was a 3D printer churning away.
Great work. I dont think everybody see how much work and precition that went into that pen. :)
Exactly my thoughts all the time.... I just want to make something :)
Awesome video….Was the front cap of the pen just friction for?
Thats why i like lathes good Job👍🏼
I came here for a cool idea on my lathe and got more interested in your cool ass lathe!
Thanks!
thats a solid construction
seems pretty sturdy
great video Curt....just got a mini lathe and some 6061 this inspires me :)
Thanks for the kind words!
😍😍😍 i just wana wright something with this awesome pen
I have never seen anything like this before. I am totally interested in pen making ❤ Thank you for sharing this video. I have a question, what is the pen making technique called in goldsmith eg. If I want to make pens, how can I learn the art? All the best 👍
That is so cool I want one so bad
Sucks I didn’t have all those machines
This is just one single machine
small work..Not my thing . But great job. I would like to try making this Pen.. Cool ..

Awesome pen. I would buy one.
Thanks!
And do you know where to get disposable pens fixed?
Everything is mass produced these days, so it is hard
to find repair services.
I like your toolpost.
Sometimes.... 🎵All I wanna do, is have some fun. I got a feeling that I'm not the only one!🎵
Hi
Nice work indeed I was mesmerised by the work and thought to give it a try too for myself. So could u plz specify the details so I could try it too in my lab .
Nice job!!
That's a nice ring on your finger.
I've been telling myself to do something similar. No excuse. Energel refills all day long.
Great video, wich model of lathe do you have?can you link me in the description
Amazing skill you have! What is the name of the equipment that you used ? Can such things be done at home ?
Thanks for the kind words, the main machine here is a bench top lathe (specifically a "Taig Metalworking Lathe"). You can 100% do things like this at home :).
So beautiful
Any chance you could post your dimensions and I.D/O.D that is a great looking project Thanks for sharing
Thanks, sorry I don't have detailed drawings of this but the ID is 0.25" and the OD is 0.375" :-).
Like to know the lathe? Looks perfect for the hobbyist!
The taig metal working lathe (www.taigtools.com).
I noticed you didn't use any cutting compound when cutting your threads? i rarely work with aluminium, so is this just because its not needed with aluminium thread cutting. Or just because you decided not to? :)
very nice, I wonder if I could do this on a wood lathe?? Thanks for the share!!
With soft metals like aluminum and brass yes. Stuff like steel no.
Sounds like a dot matrix printer on life support in the background
Hehe, that printer has become the unsung star of this video :).
as an amateur machinist and a newbie to these videos. Curt Filipowski okay perfect, I figured the live centre would've worked but makes sense due to a small bed, thanks for a quick reply!
You have very nice handwriting
Great job bro
i would like to buy one my exams are coming 😁😁😁😁😁👌👌👍👍👍👍👍
Ill make you one for $50
That lathe is super small 😍
I want that lathe
How much and where did you get the lathe for?
you should have made Cap or something to protect tip of refill
Your lathe is absolutely awesome ! Where did you buy it ?
Thanks! Its made by a company called Taig (taigtools.com).
Thank you very much😉
Did you glue the front half to back?
Thanks for showing!
I wish i could do the same and just build something
Hey nice work ! What lathe do have ? What are the dimensions and spec for this pen ? Thanks
What angle did you adjust your tool post to make the taper cut
I honestly can't recall...around 30 degrees I believe.
nice pen !!
Hey I was wondering what kind of lathe is that
What is that sponge like thing you used to give the brushed finish?
Its just a foam sanding pad...500ish grit if I recall correctly.
nice work
I know you now have the 5C spindle but was this the 3/5-16 or the er16 spindle in this video?
is that a 3D printer printing in background? or just a inkjet printer?
Sweet pen! Are they for sale?
This specific one isn't for sale (little to unrefined for my likes) however I sell other thru my website, currently I have nothing in stock but that should change in the next few weeks. Feel free to drop my a message if your after something specific. Thanks for the comment!
SOLID👍🏼👍🏼...I want one !!!
I like you'r lathe , and good video
Thanks 👍
You need to make a cap for it
Thats a nice looking pen you gots there. What kind of a mill are you running?
Thanks, its a craftex CX600 which is basically a G0704 with grey paint.
Is it as CNC conversion?
I haven't converted it yet...someday
Is your lathe a Home Build?
Nice project by the way.
Thanks, this lathe is made by Taig....my big concrete lathe is homemade.
amazing what you can do with that cheap little thing! the stuff i do on my mini lathe wich is like 5 times bigger than this, turns out crappier than this, but i'm not mad, this is amazing!
I’ll take your entire stock
I think I might knurl the business end of mine
Whats the name of the lathe and how much did it cost?
Cool video man
Thanks, its a lathe made by taig tools...base model is right around $300.
Curt Filipowski thanks, with tools 300 or only the lathe ?
Hey I am trying to get into metal working to invent stuff. If you have time, I'd love to know what the equipment you are using is called.
Awesome, the machine in this video is a metal lathe (specifically a metal lathe made by TaigTools), many different versions out there but that should help your googling :).
How are you able to work this fast
You actually used a reamer! So many videos of lathe turning where either they don't show it or bypass reaming.
loud applause👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Where can I get a lathe like that
Would you consider making one of these pens to sell? I would pay to get one of those, simple yet masculine pens. Please let me know.
Very nice do you make and sell these pens?
Not of this exact design (this was just made off the cuff). However I occasionally have stock on my website, www.confoundedmachine.com. Thanks for the comment!
Nice job.
I noticed you are using busy bee stuff. Where in Canada are you located? I would love to have another maker close by to spin ideas by. I am in Ottawa.
Ahh, I'm in Alberta so it may be a bit of a drive.
Nice work. More Taig lathe videos please :-)
You got it! I love playing with the taig.
Curt Filipowski Yee Hah! :-)
I really like this video, could you tell me the machine model or share link ,thanks
Very nice
I wnt this pen can i get one of them
Gaming Sega make one
How much did this cost to make??? As me and my friend are planning on making personalised pens out of acrylic and wood and were thinking of trying theses
Next to nothing ($5 in materials)...time, that's where the cost comes in :).
is that a little NOVA lathe? we used ones like that in high school!!
Its actually a Taig metworking lathe.
Lathe model?
Now I will just pop out and buy a lathe... Or a pack of pens? Hmmmm...
What kind or type of lathe do you use in this video? Where could i buy it?
Thanks for fun video)
Thanks, its a lathe made by Taig Tools, they have a reseller link on their site.
Thank you Curt for the answer!) I have found 1 dealer near my region (Ukraine) Please, tell me if you are satiafied working with this tool? Can you reccomend it for making stuff for home?)

Great guess at Polish too, indeed what my background is :-).
what is the pad you use to make the aluminium shine :D
Its just a foam sanding pad, 220 and 500 grit.
where did you get the chuck jaws? are they soft jaws for aluminum?
This specific chuck comes with aluminum jaws so yes soft jaws for soft metals.
whose the manufacturer?
minskmade, looks like a Sherline or clone
Hello Curt! Congrats for your amazing work. What thickness did you use for your aluminum barrel?
Ну ты мужик, молодца! Вообще супер!
Very good
