I'm a professional. To be able to apply silicone just like an experience professional caulker, I have been watching many videos on how to apply it perfectly. This video probably was the 20th one that I watched over about a week time. I gota say that this video is the most thorough one. Although he applied silicone roughly purposely, he taught us how to manage it. Very well done. I am saving this video.
It's a free tip that someone has kindly used their own time to try and show us mere mortals how to try and not make a mess using silicone sealer, so thank you Bathroom, Plumbing and Fitting for your efforts, even if all the closet experts can't be arsed to put there videos up, it certainly made my bodgit and scarper work look good enough for the Mrs so thank you ;-)
Internet experts who don’t just make their own videos are my favourite. They would realise how annoying it is if they did, because so many other experts would tell them they are doing it wrong.
Of all the millions of TH-cam videos I have watched I think this is the most useful one I have ever seen! This should be mandatory watching in all schools throughout the world. I’ve met several handyman and plumbers who shake in fear when it comes to applying silicone. I’ve been trying for years to learn how to do it properly, thank you thank you!
Thanks for taking the time to post the video, just a few points. If you measure the silicone tool against the nozzle and cut the nozzle 2mm less than the length of edge you're using on the tool (and cut the nozzle straight, not at an angle), you can run the tool (flat edge every time not the bevel !!) in one go and job done. Also, clean the area with methylated spirit before application (leave to evaporate for a few minutes). Another point (and a basic guide) - low modulus silicone - good flexibility - for areas likely to see flexing of surfaces (acrylic bath/ shower edge against tiles etc.). High modulus silicone - more hard wearing but less flexible - where no/ little flexing is expected (internal corner of a tiled wall, kitchen worktops, porcelain toilets, sink, shower etc)
A 63 year old would like to thank you so much. I've spent a lifetime dreading doing the silicon sealant bit of decorating, usually ending up with more on me than the job. After yet another botch, I found your video, watched it twice, cleaned off my botch job then did it again - PROPERLY!! It's the best job I've ever done and the secret is the squirty bottle. Thanks - I don't think I'm ready to go professional yet but I won't dread the sealant job so much in the future. Much respect.
This is a great video, he does use a lot of caulk and I understand that the reason he does is for beginners. A few homeowners do not know how to use it and it is better to show an abundance than what a proffesional would do. It almost guarantees the beginner a proper seal the first time. Great video!

I use a credit card or any kind of card with a round edges, does the same job, and I learned the liquid soap trick 2 years ago, helped me a lot. As someone else said, don't lay too much silicone, make it easy to clean.
Great demo video. Had both our bathrooms renovated over 12 months ago. Tiler must have used his fingers applying silicon on tiled corners because, there's bacterial growth on some parts of the silicone seal. I'll buy those handy silicone spatula tools from local hardware, remove/reseal joints myself. Makes sense about bacterial growth attaching itself to rough surfaces. We always squeegee shower cubical, then use a chamois to wipe any water/ moisture after a shower, leave the shower cubical door open for ventilation. Electric exhaust fans installed in the ceiling above the shower cubical for steam/moisture extraction. Still bacterial growth after all precautions. Thankyou very much. 👋🇦🇺
Oh man, THANK YOU for this tutorial!! I had limited time to do a re-caulk on my bathroom for a home showing, and I was dreading the job based on past frustration of trying to do it right. Mixed up my solution, bought my smoothing tools for $10, and BOOM, I got unbelievable results!
A lot of the videos on this show confident passes with little to no gummed up mess (what I’d typically end up with). You show that even if you apply it inconsistently it’s still salvageable and ensures the caulk gets a good seal. Cheers for a clear and helpful clip!

Brilliant! Hated caulking silicon because I screwed it up so often. Just bought some smoothing tools and redid a disaster of a bathtub finish (my fault). Took a while to remove the old crappy finish, but re-applying it was easy. Thanks for the video.

Amazing video. When you first started applying it I honestly thought what are you doing, that's not how to apply silicone. However, I stand corrected. Well that has to be the best silicon sealing job that I as a home DIY'er have ever done .. bar none! And ALL thanks to this video. Not up to the standard of an experienced pro for sure. Top tutorial! I had a bathroom done 2yrs ago but have a leak coming through the ceiling. Silcone looks to have come away on the tray but i redid it but like you said it needs to be good to stop mould. I scraped it all back out to redo it and they still sell the tool edges at screwfix and it matches to the 6mm edge on what the plumber did so he must've used a tool to do it.
Nice! I wish I saw this before I just used the masking tape like I saw on this old house :/ When I moved in the white line was so thin it was not even attached to both sides. I had to use a lot like in this video to make sure it was actually sealed.
@Mike Barton Good thought. The odds are 50-50 that 100% of the time it will ruin your most visible critical job, never occurring in areas not readily visible!
because you never know if there is an easier or better way, i get my silicon looking great in 1 pass and dont have any waste, if it did need smoothing off i would leave it 30 mins before sticking my fingers in it, its gets a skin and doesnt stick to ur finger. i also always cut the top to how big or small i need it to be.

i don't know why so many haters in comments. I have worked with pro caulkers that would have done this in less than 60 seconds with none of what was in the video. But this guy just showed people how to do something and it did work. Technique could be a bit refined but thank you for sharing. Very well done sir. I handle my own caulk but if I am going to handle someone elses caulk i will know how to please them from now on.

I used to renovate bathrooms some tips: 1. you wasted to much caulk, cut the tip smaller. 2. After you lay a bead, then you spray with soapy water, or simple green, no need to "push it in" if you lay it down right the first time. 3. A wooden popsicle stick makes a perfect bead. Just remember to spray it to. 4. Clean up caulk with acetone, or alcohol, etc.
Exactly - someone else doing it right! Use a washing up liquid mix and some of the mix in a bucket. Flick the tool in the bucket and the silicone falls off into the bucket - no paper towels needed and the tool is wetted for the next pull stroke over the silicone. For best results use a clear antibacterial washing up liquid mist spray. 1:4 mix of washup liquid to water is about right.Studhawk
Exactly agreed - I don't push the silicone in with the finger as i let the gunning in pressure do that - but same system and the guy gets the same abuse i get when i have been a specialist tiling contractor for 30 years and used this system always. #Studhawk How To Tile A BAthroom will show you the same system if you want to check another video for comparrison? Thank you! I have been doing this for years and have just gotten to hate it because I changed my method to use much less caulk. I get a better, longer lasting result by putting in the extra time and effort..and materials. In the long run, it is much cheaper because it lasts longer and looks better than skimpy caulk that gets discolored, mildewed, or dried up, or separates from the surface. Keep up the good work!
You should do it with the back of an empty silicone tube, its flexible and you can szqueeze it to adjust the radius you want.. also its hollow and takes all your excess and leaves a very clean finish.. try it.
I have seen the back of a silicon tube used before and it is one way of tooling up, but you cannot always squeeze the tube offcut to the same profile - so these silicon tools are far superior. Don't forget to spray over the silicon and wet the tool before tooling up. Studhawk videos
Yes i have tried that method but you can leave a thin film and only wetted silicone tools remove this. Silicone tools are much faster and give a more uniform profile than squeezing a silicon tube off cut which can vary depending on the pressure of the squeeze on the tube. Believe me once you have tried silicon tools you will always use them. Studhawk
This was excellent! I was going to pay to have my re-caulked, but may just tackle it myself.. Only thing missing in your tutorial is how to cut the tip off the caulk tube so just the right thickness of caulk comes out.. great video!
Never use fingers. Cut the silicone tip at a 90° angle instead of 45°. The cut tip should be no more than 10mm, any larger is overkill. Apply the silicone while using the gun at a 90° angle to push the silicone into the join. Let the gun do the work. Finish with the silicone finishing moulds. No spray needed. No fingers used. No bacteria made. No mouldy bathroom in 5 months time.
I know enough to say that all criticism of this workmanship is true and well intended, and that much of the praise is of low standard. I am good with my hands in many trade activities, but using silicone I make mess. I have watched men applying sealants and tried to copy them and learned little. After watching this man I believe I can follow his method. His method is not as good as the man's I call to do my work, but I will be very happy to it as well. Applying sealants is an art and one or two comments here come from most capable applicators. This video is of much help to me. Thank you. Subscribed. Australia.
When you're on a big run. Wipe and chuck. Have bin there. When you mess up it's so frustrating. I use a new box of supermarket tissues for each task group. Once it's half empty you can't guarantee a clean one handed pull.
I have just found your video, you have no idea how much this has helped me. This is my 3rd attempt at doing silicone and wow, the difference is amazing. Only complaint is you didn’t teach me how to do corners 😊

If you use a finishing tool kit, there's an attachment that makes a T with the tool so that it rides over the tiles grout line so you don't get bumps in your silicone line. The finishing Kits are about £10 in most retailers or online.
Yeah, look for ANY video's put out by Bunnings Warehouse. The video's are made by unskilled team members who have only the slightest idea of the task but come across as 'experts'. I should know, I worked for them and was coerced into being filmed for one of their video's despite knowing very little about the subject!
What I didn't hear mentioned and what I do when siliconing is ... I cut the nozzle half way down and at an angle with a sharp Stanley blade ... this helps you to silicone at the right angle .... so many people silicone without cutting the nozzle and it's not the right road to choose ... if you use masking tape the silicone obviously stops at the tape ... the tape has a marginal thickness so when you peel off the tape you end up with a 'ridge' or a 'step' in your silicone and it looks ridiculous ... best thing to do is let it dry, remove the silione and start again without using masking tape.
There is no rules how you can apply silicone and I do use tape, not always but sometimes and get perfect result. Some people have even asked how i get so straight and smooth silicone seams. And it doesn't leave any ridge when you use wet finger once more after tape is removed.
As a window fitter I've never used them little tool things, anyone who uses those does not know how to silicone. Cut your nozzle at 90° at the desired thickness, now loaded into the silicone gun hold the gun at 90° to the area to be sealed, press the trigger and move along slowly, stop when you have no travel left in the trigger, release and start again. I can get the same finish he has there without any fingering in, no tape and no scraping tools, this was a dummies guide to soliciting.
I think the idea of posting this video was to help “non-professionals” achieve this to a good level. And it does. I wonder why all the pros out there who claim that can do it better are even watching such a video?

Nice demo and end result. However, you’ll need a dumpster to collect the roll of paper towels that wastefully collected the gross amounts of chalking applied. A “Pro” would survive with all these losses.
Green Achers when u open a tube of silicone it’s just going to go bad anyway. I’d rather throw it away after it’s served its purpose than throw it away when it goes off in the tube and did nothing for me...just sayin. He could’ve used less but u wanna use a decent amount to insure it seals and remains sealed for years even thru shifting. Just one way to look at it.

@Keith. I can’t imagine what politics has to do with this in the slightest. Good business sense might, however. Less used product means higher profit. Less cost to customers means more customers. 1+1= a lasting business with good client relationships and lots of referrals. Not mentioning good workplace stewardship.

Bloody hell you will need 20 tubes of sealant for one bathroom at that rate , just cut the nozzle to size and apply it,use a wooden clothes peg put washing up liquid on round edge to smoothen the silicon out Job done !

as a decorator, i wish plumber and DIYers wouldn't silicone around the tile edge and the wall that's going to be to e painted. Paint won't stick to silicone.
Hi "when I come across were the plumber as caked up the walls with the silicon I put something called stipstic on it it's a product for painting wicker furniture & dries quickly it seals the silicon to allow you to paint it without fretting..
@@BASICAVAX water from what and where? I'm talking about the tile edge against anything that will be decorated next to it. Silicone is only any good again the bath and tile angle. No silicone should be applied around uPVC windows on the inside where you paint up to them. But ppl do it :(
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator Silicone is strictly to be used in wet areas and is not paintable, however Acrylic Latex caulk is. That's the proper caulk for painted surfaces and is the first thing any respectable professional painter does. Door & window casings, baseboards, etc.
I found this very useful because beginners (I include myself) tend to use excessive amounts of silicon and this video shows you how to avoid the mess I’ve often found myself in. The use of profiles was new to me! Thank you.
This guy has evolved his own way of doing this - and how wasteful - no need to put so much on, its daft! If you have just the one job, that's not so bad, but if you use it regularly, then don't waste the stuff !!!!

I have been doing this for years, if you are not doing silicone work 8 hours a day then all you need is: 1. Silicone and silicone gun (note all silicone`s go black if you don`t keep them clean, cheap or expensive) remember that bleach breaks silicone down so try to use sparingly but if you want to avoid those black spots in the shower or around the bath then bleach is the only way you will. 2. Spray bottle with water and a small amount of washing up liquid. 3. Cardboard, silicone will wipe off your stick (4) or finger (5) much more cleanly and effectively than using paper. 4. Lollipop stick, you can buy a pack very cheaply and nothing gives a better silicone finish than a lollipop stick. Apply silicone, spray soapy water lightly over all areas of silicone then angle the lollipop stick from the corner and run over silicone, lobbing off excess silicone on to cardboard as you go. Don`t be afraid to go over more than once using the straight edge of the stick to remove excess silicone from both sides of the joint. By its very nature the curved head of the stick will never remove the joint silicone just the excess. 5. Your finger, after removing excess silicone with the lollipop stick if your not 100% happy with the finish just lick the top of your finger and run gently across the silicon. Never ever use masking tape it will give a terrible finish. Hand wipes are fantastic for cleaning any silicone from hands and also for removing any odd bits of residue once the silicone has dried. Remember you will always end up with as much excess silicone on your cardboard as you will have left on the joint, its part and parcel, do not try to re-use the excess that you have on the cardboard.
@Elliott Day , nice attitude ha ha ha, a professional would use less, get the same results and not take the piss out of the customer. Also, what he is saying about dirt and bacteria not having anything to stick to is not exactly true, if the customer doesn't keep it clean, it will go black. Annoys the crap out of me when I look in the skips after working with guys with that attitude, they never get asked back. Same with insulation off-cuts. If you are on a site with 100 or more dwellings going up, all that shit counts.
@Elliott DayWhen I was a window fitter I got silicone out of stores. If we overused materials it came out of company profit. It wasn't like we were asking the customer for more money if we used more silicone and towel! 🤣
@Elliott Day , all I can say is, that is not the way a professional would think, when I interview new lads I ask them to demonstrate their skills on a quick test, if they acted in that way, they would be told thanks, but no thanks, suppose its a matter of preference, silicon doesn't grow on tree's, eh?

Edit: Bet you a quid you start using the good stuff and learn to shape and control the caulking gun, to the envy of your peers (it's not difficult, just don't hack off the end of the nozzle, mould it like a fine piece of art). When you see a pro use the correct amount and shape all in one go, you will know you have witnessed the dark side and will have to belong to that silent group. OK, perhaps not silent. FYI: I use the same nozzle that I have probably had for 20 years or so.
Fantastic video, really easy to understand. Have just resealed a section along my bath where the original silicone had failed allowing water to leak in. The finish is so good and blends with the existing silicone u'd never know 😁
I've applied lots of silicone in expensive homes where looks are everything, when he put that big bead around that shower enclosure my heart skipped a beat. To much waste in my opinion but the bead looks amazing.

This was a fantastic video, very easy to follow and I like how you talked us through each step. That little silicone smoothing tool is a must have.
Hint: If you don't have one of those silicone spatulas, use the plastic tags that come with bread, cut it if needed. Worked great!

Amazing video. When you first started applying it I honestly thought what are you doing, that's not how to apply silicone. However, I stand corrected. I had a bathroom done 2yrs ago but have a leak coming through the ceiling. Silcone looks to have come away on the tray but i redid it but like you said it needs to be good to stop mould. I scraped it all back out to redo it and they still sell the tool edges at screwfix and it matches to the 6mm edge on what the plumber did so he must've used a tool to do it.

Nice! I wish I saw this before I just used the masking tape like I saw on this old house :/ When I moved in the white line was so thin it was not even attached to both sides. I had to use a lot like in this video to make sure it was actually sealed.

because you never know if there is an easier or better way, i get my silicon looking great in 1 pass and dont have any waste, if it did need smoothing off i would leave it 30 mins before sticking my fingers in it, its gets a skin and doesnt stick to ur finger. i also always cut the top to how big or small i need it to be.

i don't know why so many haters in comments. I have worked with pro caulkers that would have done this in less than 60 seconds with none of what was in the video. But this guy just showed people how to do something and it did work. Technique could be a bit refined but thank you for sharing. Very well done sir. I handle my own caulk but if I am going to handle someone elses caulk i will know how to please them from now on.

I used to renovate bathrooms some tips: 1. you wasted to much caulk, cut the tip smaller. 2. After you lay a bead, then you spray with soapy water, or simple green, no need to "push it in" if you lay it down right the first time. 3. A wooden popsicle stick makes a perfect bead. Just remember to spray it to. 4. Clean up caulk with acetone, or alcohol, etc.
I apply mastic, spray water then trail with setting tool. Works first time every time for me.

Exactly - someone else doing it right! Use a washing up liquid mix and some of the mix in a bucket. Flick the tool in the bucket and the silicone falls off into the bucket - no paper towels needed and the tool is wetted for the next pull stroke over the silicone. For best results use a clear antibacterial washing up liquid mist spray. 1:4 mix of washup liquid to water is about right.Studhawk

Thank you! I have been doing this for years and have just gotten to hate it because I changed my method to use much less caulk. I get a better, longer lasting result by putting in the extra time and effort..and materials. In the long run, it is much cheaper because it lasts longer and looks better than skimpy caulk that gets discolored, mildewed, or dried up, or separates from the surface. Keep up the good work!

You should do it with the back of an empty silicone tube, its flexible and you can szqueeze it to adjust the radius you want.. also its hollow and takes all your excess and leaves a very clean finish.. try it.
I have seen the back of a silicon tube used before and it is one way of tooling up, but you cannot always squeeze the tube offcut to the same profile - so these silicon tools are far superior. Don't forget to spray over the silicon and wet the tool before tooling up. Studhawk videos
Yes i have tried that method but you can leave a thin film and only wetted silicone tools remove this. Silicone tools are much faster and give a more uniform profile than squeezing a silicon tube off cut which can vary depending on the pressure of the squeeze on the tube. Believe me once you have tried silicon tools you will always use them.

This was excellent! I was going to pay to have my re-caulked, but may just tackle it myself.. Only thing missing in your tutorial is how to cut the tip off the caulk tube so just the right thickness of caulk comes out.. great video!

After watching hours of plumbing vids, I've concluded that every tradesman on TH-cam is a Londoner.
Never use fingers. Cut the silicone tip at a 90° angle instead of 45°. The cut tip should be no more than 10mm, any larger is overkill. Apply the silicone while using the gun at a 90° angle to push the silicone into the join. Let the gun do the work. Finish with the silicone finishing moulds. No spray needed. No fingers used. No bacteria made. No mouldy bathroom in 5 months time.

I know enough to say that all criticism of this workmanship is true and well intended, and that much of the praise is of low standard. I am good with my hands in many trade activities, but using silicone I make mess. I have watched men applying sealants and tried to copy them and learned little. After watching this man I believe I can follow his method. His method is not as good as the man's I call to do my work, but I will be very happy to it as well. Applying sealants is an art and one or two comments here come from most capable applicators. This video is of much help to me. Thank you.

When you're on a big run. Wipe and chuck. Have bin there. When you mess up it's so frustrating. I use a new box of supermarket tissues for each task group. Once it's half empty you can't guarantee a clean one handed pull.

How do you get over tile grooves? It always leave a bumpy result, right where the groove is.
With the Cramer tool, they have small attachments which allow the tool to go over the grout lines without going in them.

But how would you slide that tool along a tiled wall? Wouldn’t you get a dip or bump every time you hit a grout line?

If you use a finishing tool kit, there's an attachment that makes a T with the tool so that it rides over the tiles grout line so you don't get bumps in your silicone line. The finishing Kits are about £10 in most retailers or online.

What I didn't hear mentioned and what I do when siliconing is ... I cut the nozzle half way down and at an angle with a sharp Stanley blade ... this helps you to silicone at the right angle .... so many people silicone without cutting the nozzle and it's not the right road to choose ... if you use masking tape the silicone obviously stops at the tape ... the tape has a marginal thickness so when you peel off the tape you end up with a 'ridge' or a 'step' in your silicone and it looks ridiculous ... best thing to do is let it dry, remove the silione and start again without using masking tape.
If you use tape you pull it off right after you smoothed silicone and then once more slight finger touch to get rid of those "ridges".

There is no rules how you can apply silicone and I do use tape, not always but sometimes and get perfect result. Some people have even asked how i get so straight and smooth silicone seams. And it doesn't leave any ridge when you use wet finger once more after tape is removed.

As a window fitter I've never used them little tool things, anyone who uses those does not know how to silicone. Cut your nozzle at 90° at the desired thickness, now loaded into the silicone gun hold the gun at 90° to the area to be sealed, press the trigger and move along slowly, stop when you have no travel left in the trigger, release and start again. I can get the same finish he has there without any fingering in, no tape and no scraping tools, this was a dummies guide to soliciting.
I think the idea of posting this video was to help “non-professionals” achieve this to a good level. And it does. I wonder why all the pros out there who claim that can do it better are even watching such a video?

Nice demo and end result. However, you’ll need a dumpster to collect the roll of paper towels that wastefully collected the gross amounts of chalking applied. A “Pro” would survive with all these losses.
Green Achers when u open a tube of silicone it’s just going to go bad anyway. I’d rather throw it away after it’s served its purpose than throw it away when it goes off in the tube and did nothing for me...just sayin. He could’ve used less but u wanna use a decent amount to insure it seals and remains sealed for years even thru shifting. Just one way to look at it.

@Keith. I can’t imagine what politics has to do with this in the slightest. Good business sense might, however. Less used product means higher profit. Less cost to customers means more customers. 1+1= a lasting business with good client relationships and lots of referrals. Not mentioning good workplace stewardship.

Use the tool with wash up liquid mix and have the same mix in a bucket. Shake the tool in the water bucket and the excess falls off into the bucket - no paper towels needed nor masking tape etc. watch the Studhawk silicon video to see the same system used.

as a decorator, i wish plumber and DIYers wouldn't silicone around the tile edge and the wall that's going to be to e painted. Paint won't stick to silicone.
Hi "when I come across were the plumber as caked up the walls with the silicon I put something called stipstic on it it's a product for painting wicker furniture & dries quickly it seals the silicon to allow you to paint it without fretting..

No silicone should be applied around uPVC windows on the inside where you paint up to them. But ppl do it :(
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator Silicone is strictly to be used in wet areas and is not paintable, however Acrylic Latex caulk is. That's the proper caulk for painted surfaces and is the first thing any respectable professional painter does. Door & window casings, baseboards, etc.

I have been doing this for years, if you are not doing silicone work 8 hours a day then all you need is:
1. Silicone and silicone gun (note all silicone`s go black if you don`t keep them clean, cheap or expensive) remember that bleach breaks silicone down so try to use sparingly but if you want to avoid those black spots in the shower or around the bath then bleach is the only way you will.
2. Spray bottle with water and a small amount of washing up liquid.
3. Cardboard, silicone will wipe off your stick (4) or finger (5) much more cleanly and effectively than using paper.
4. Lollipop stick, you can buy a pack very cheaply and nothing gives a better silicone finish than a lollipop stick. Apply silicone, spray soapy water lightly over all areas of silicone then angle the lollipop stick from the corner and run over silicone, lobbing off excess silicone on to cardboard as you go. Don`t be afraid to go over more than once using the straight edge of the stick to remove excess silicone from both sides of the joint. By its very nature the curved head of the stick will never remove the joint silicone just the excess.
5. Your finger, after removing excess silicone with the lollipop stick if your not 100% happy with the finish just lick the top of your finger and run gently across the silicon.
Never ever use masking tape it will give a terrible finish. Hand wipes are fantastic for cleaning any silicone from hands and also for removing any odd bits of residue once the silicone has dried. Remember you will always end up with as much excess silicone on your cardboard as you will have left on the joint, its part and parcel, do not try to re-use the excess that you have on the cardboard.

Also, what he is saying about dirt and bacteria not having anything to stick to is not exactly true, if the customer doesn't keep it clean, it will go black.

Edit: Bet you a quid you start using the good stuff and learn to shape and control the caulking gun, to the envy of your peers (it's not difficult, just don't hack off the end of the nozzle, mould it like a fine piece of art).
When you see a pro use the correct amount and shape all in one go, you will know you have witnessed the dark side and will have to belong to that silent group.

FYI: I use the same nozzle that I have probably had for 20 years or so.

I've applied lots of silicone in expensive homes where looks are everything, when he put that big bead around that shower enclosure my heart skipped a beat. To much waste in my opinion but the bead looks amazing.
