Hi- I’m interested in the HDW in M size for downwinding and I think your review is the only one online- so thanks for taking the time to do it! I’m at the point where I’ve had a few extended runs on foil (up to 1km on foil), but still sometimes have runs where I struggle. My current foil is about 1290 area and AR8. I’d like something a little faster, better high end but still not too hard to paddle up. It would involve changing foil brands. I love the affordability of Gong. Would you recommend the Veloce HDW in M? I weigh 73kg, but not as skilled as you!
Hey man, first of all as im 85 kg so my review is a bit biased as 10 kg make a huge difference. Going from a 1290 ar8 to ar 13 will feel very strange in the beginning but once you get used to it i think its amazing! the m which is 900 in sqcm feels to me like a 1100 in terms of low aspect foils i had before, so i think the transition should be okay for you, what foil exactly are you on right now? the hdw is super efficient once flying but it requires some finesse in when to pump as with all ha foils its a bit more bitchy with stalling. however i think its still managable to start as the low end is nuts for the sizes these things come in. if you want to have it as easy to get out for now, you could take the l to be safe. Efficiency would for sure und top end would most likely also still increase. however I would suggest to go for the m directly, maybe more challenging in the beginning, but the size is a true do it aller (at a least for me) I used it a lot on tenerife recently and it was the foil that worked every day for me, no matter the conditions. If its very small I would go bigger, really powefull smaller, but everything in the terms of normal conditions where its actually fun to ride the 900 was close to perfect for me... Hope this helps, as I said, weight makes a huge difference so don't just take my word for it :D
@ thanks for the detailed reply Leo. My current downwinding foil is the unifoil progression 200, but I have used much smaller and higher aspect foils for winging and downwinding with a wing (down to 650 sq cm and AR10), so I have an idea of what the HDW will feel like. I feel I would probably prefer going a bit faster than I have been so far in my downwinding journey. My only doubt is the paddle-up as my technique isn’t perfect by any means!
Thanks man! I'm working on a drag and drop conversion, once I have that figured out with the tolerances etc. I will upload the stl file for free on Thingyverse, so that everyone can just order it at pcb way. You will however still need to drill the Axis m8 holes in the gong fuse, everything else should work plug and play. No Idea when I'll have time for this, but its definitely coming (sooner or later) :) They way the conversion in the video works requires a precice cnc mill and lots of time, so not the way to goo for most, including me. (However it's hydrodynamically better than the drag and drop will be)
With your knowledge, if you would be starting foiling from beginning now and focusing to DW board as you have now, what would be your starting foil kit, taking in account if you decided to buy HM77 -15mm mast where bigger foils than 140cm are not recommended. Would you buy Veloce HDW XL or Sirus XL or something more beginner friendly? Thank you. P.S. we are still waiting for Axis and Gong masts comparison ;)
How much wind was it and how big are the bumps? I´m getting into dw on Gotland(also in the Baltic sea), there is no one else here doing it and im a bit confused with the conditions, how much wind and size of bumps do i need? Great video!
Nice review! What do you mean by balancing issue? Do you find it easier to balance on a longer mast? Because i own a HM86 and HM72 for pumping the Sirus XXL and i find the 72cm much easier to balance 🤷 happy flying!
He means the state when you are still on the water with the board. With narrow DW Boards the foil provides the main stability that is necessary to balance the board. The further the foil is away from the Board, the more stable it feels. In flatwater it does not matter that much, but with waves from different directions, backwash and currents forming it does get quite challenging.
I'm not sure honestly. I think for this day again I would prefer the higher top speed and less drag when being relatively fast. However if it would be a tiny bit smaller I would needed a bigger foil i think. Its a hard compromise. But i really want to get used to the smaller front wings, I think with choosing the right line it can be easier to ride something small as its simply fast enough to stay in the energy...
Thanks for the comment :) I used it on the veloce v3 M stab. Seems like a very good combo. However when I'm ordering the HDW L soon, I will keep on using the Veloce v3 S Stab on it
im 80kg, im thinking about getting the veloce DWD M, do you think its a good size? im a beginner to intermediate DW foiler !! when I use the 1201 I have a hard time controlling the foil because of the span, that's why im considering getting the DWD m instead of the L! how is the stall speed? i can flat water start the 1201 art pro, do you think the M is comparable? also, have you tried the veloce H? thanks
@@TheGrostotom 95 kg is a lot more than 86 and, and my Board with almost 8 is way longer than yours at 7! What Foils where you just to before? I'll order the 1050 as well!

Thanks Bro :)
Sehr genial!
