I did an 8500 mile road trip starting in February 2022 and finished in mid May. Lots of sites and visits on the way. I rarely got on interstates and rarely got over 70 mph. I took mostly back roads a week of So Cal freeways, mountain passes and even a few hundred miles of dirt. I kept all my receipts so that at the end of my trip I could check on accuracy. I averaged 29.5 mpg in my 2018 Ridgeline. I've owned or driven almost every personal truck sold in the U.S. The Ridgeline is, without a doubt, the best truck , for my needs. Quiet, comfortable, efficient, I made a dozen trips with a pallet of cinderblocks in the back...tailgate swinging out save the back when unloading. The trunk is great for groceries or Costco. I recommend them and will always have a Ridgeline in the driveway.
I can get 24.5 mpg going between Vegas and LA going 85 mph with the air on in eco mode. Pretty good! Always get around 19 or 20 around Vegas, city driving. Great truck.
Similar experience with about 23 mpg for me in my 2017 with 6spd auto Side note just did this drive recently (the week before Thanksgiving) and I averaged 17mpg with 20-13mph headwinds probably should have slowed down 😅😬

VCM engine (essentially becomes an I3 engine) so key part of maximizing mileage is to find the sweet spot where VCM will not keep disengaging yet enough torque to adjust to the road modulations. In the Accord V6 with the same J35 engine it's just about 70 - 72 mph - any faster and it will start popping out of VCM more due to the increased need of road hp to fight wind resistance, affecting mileage. Any slower there isn't enough torque to keep speed constant with road modulations (unless totally pancake flat with no wind) so the tinest inputs of more throttle will also pop it out of VCM. This isn't really hypermiling either as you're keeping speed, not going all over the place causing road rage. Anyway, in the Accord I can easily get high 30's, even low 40s using this method with no traffic on the highway. I've not driven a Ridgeline but my guess with the less aerodynamic profile the sweet spot might be somewhere closer to 60-65mph.

Probably my biggest complaint is the adaptive cruise, granted this is my first vehicle with it but I don’t like how it works, I wish there was a way to set the cruise and not use the adaptive. Using the Mileage Keeper app I have gotten 20.7 MPG over 8,000 miles, best fill up was 25.7 MPG. I loved my '19 RTL-E. I'd average 27-28 hwy and 21 around town. I got 34mpg with a very strong tail wind (+20mph) from Kansas to TX on one road trip. I sold it to CarMax less than a year ago for about $550 less than what I paid for it because I now live/work in the sandy part of the world. I'd love to get a new one when I return to the US but I'm not a big fan of the 9sp transmission. Hoping the '23 brings some interior updates as I may be in the market again early next year.

I find the adaptive cruise control system to be very inferior compared to our new Toyota Venza Limited. I was very disappointed to find out that this new ‘25 Ridgeline doesn’t have the slow speed cruise, so the adaptive cruise actually shuts off at 25 mph. Honda should bring this Black Edition up to the level of the top of the line Pilot.

Have a new 2021 RTL-E. Two issues. 1) You cannot attach a winch to this "pilot" frame. 2) HEAT (Lower). Not an issue for most people, but we drive in subzero and my wife and I BOTH get cold feet. Wondering what the hell was going on? Found out that there are two settings that are relevant. One is heat lower and defrost icon and the other is heat only lower. Guess what in BOTH settings heat still pours out of the defrosters so that the lower heat is shunted to window AND foot area. Took it into dealer and they said it is designed this way. If you look at the outlet vent UNDER the dash it is VERY small, which makes matters worse. Not a big deal for most, but for us where it was -30f the other day, it is a big issue. My wife and I purchased electric socks to wear on long trips in sub-zero weather. Having to do that on a $50,000 vehicle is ridiculous.
I think Honda could have tweaked the ridgeline a bit because of the great fuel economy. let me explain, in my 2017 ridgeline after a 1.5 inch leveling kit and bigger tires totaling about 8.83 inches of ground clearance altogether ( stock is 7.81, with 29.6 inch tires) I essentially achieve stock Subaru Crostrek ride height! My fuel economy ( with lift psi 33-34) has been about 21.6 mpg based on my slight obsessive spreadsheet. With the highest on the freeway being about 24.5MPG ( i can make it from LA to LV in 3.5hr) Those numbers are essentially stock EPA numbers reflected on a slightly modified Ridgeline. Meaning Honda could have designed a slightly higher ground clearance ridgeline, and even add a slightly bigger gas tank to have the same numbers as their original EPA estimate. Pre lift and tires I could get 28 on the highway with the original 6 spd auto. In fact the 9 spd only goes into 9th gear around 80mph I believe! Even then the numbers would be EPA number would be no worst than a Tacoma while being much more comfortable and smoother.

I routinely get 29 mpg going 70MPH on the interstate with AC on in my 17 RTL-T, and I am an aggressive passer. My mixed is usually around 20-21 as I tend to lead foot in city traffic and accelerate hard at lights and lane switch alot. I admit I am a terrible driver when it comes to fuel efficiency and I still get good returns in mine.
I get 40mpg in my 2014 Ridgeline going downhill on a Interstate.🤣 People report average gas milage, not the max the dashboard says. 15-23mpg is Average, depending on altitude. Lower altitude gets more oxygen and burns more fuel around 15mpg max power. Higher altitude you lose about 25% power every 7,000 feet. So at 16,000 feet you get 50% power 140hp
I have a 2017 RTL-E. In eco mode I get 26 on the highway and 18.5 in town. It has a full tonneau cover that helps. I suspect the 2021 better number comes from the engine management system that shuts down cylinders when cruising.
Doesn’t have awd with hybrid though. I can drive the Ridgeline on the beach and it tows more has a bigger bed so all depends on what you’re doing. Maverick a little more car like in hybrid
Yup competition, really? Its a FORD not a HONDA. When was the last time Ford made a motorcycle or generator or pump or anything else where people need reliability? F O R D, Fix Or Replace Daily.
Honda Ridgeline folks: have you checked the price of gas lately? I love your truck but NOT with the terrible gas mileage in your current offerings. Bring on your FULL hybrid in 2023 and you will triple your sales if it is AWD, tow 5,000 lbs, and gets Combined EPA of 32-35 MPG. The re-design stuff is great, but bring on the efficiency.
Gas mileage is fine for a pickup. Definitely the most efficient midsize other than the 2.8 duramax GM twins. I wouldnt be too sure that a hybrid would increase sales tbh, look at the Acura MDX hybrid… sold minimally for a few years then cancelled, now currently is only offered with the same engine that’s in the Ridgeline.
Shiiiiit, I drive the speed limit on the highway. Throw that cruise control on and just steer the thing everywhere I go. Constantly getting 35 mpg on my 6 cylinder 8-speed car.
The first 8th gen was the best the sohc, ex, coupe stick . It was getting 53.333 highway and 42 city. It was the first smart engine. It will go from 1.8L to 1.5 L to 2.0L. and other things within the manifold where the torquyness comes from. . After 2007 they changed the ecu maping.. and then came back on the 2012 only. Those are the gas savers/racer. If your in a 2008-2011. You dont have the same ecu maping.
I routinely average just over 20MPG in those conditions. Grid lock on the other hand, will kill any MPG. Though idlestop could be left engaged to mitigate that. I have VCM disabled and idlestop, so I am not doing anything special.

People report average gas milage, not the max the dashboard says. 15-23mpg is Average, depending on altitude. Lower altitude gets more oxygen and burns more fuel around 15mpg max power. Higher altitude you lose about 25% power every 7,000 feet. So at 16,000 feet you get 50% power 140hp
I get 22.8 mpg on my 2021 Honda Ridgeline BE without using Eco mode
Does the Ridgeline require 91 octane gas? Tacoma uses only 87.
No.
Answer at 6:04
I have a 2017 RTL-E. In eco mode I get 26 on the highway and 18.5 in town. It has a full tonneau cover that helps. I suspect the 2021 better number comes from the engine management system that shuts down cylinders when cruising.
Its called vcm and have been for a while, even in your 2017
The Ford Maverick is a major competitor...especially hybrid
Doesn’t have awd with hybrid though. I can drive the Ridgeline on the beach and it tows more has a bigger bed so all depends on what you’re doing. Maverick a little more car like in hybrid
Yup competition, really? Its a FORD not a HONDA. When was the last time Ford made a motorcycle or generator or pump or anything else where people need reliability? F O R D,
Fix Or Replace Daily.
I always get 20.1 on my ‘21 Sport.
Awesome review.
Thanks great vid
I’ll pass on any hybrid. Not everyone wants an electric vehicle with a overpriced battery.
Good vid👍
Nice truck get w.e works for you and the fam
Manliest truck ever🤟
😂 please stop being sarcastic
If you need a truck to make you feel / look manly, you should probably question your manhood.
3 gallons? What! What about a whole tank for a more accurate number
Wait for one more year and get the truck in hybrid 2023
Hybrid likely only helps city driving not highway like this test was done. Electric motor shuts off at highway speeds. (I had a Prius)
That was with econ on ?
Yes
Cruise control ruins MPG
BULLSHIT....nobody drives at 70 mph....75/80 is 22 mpg.
Shiiiiit, I drive the speed limit on the highway. Throw that cruise control on and just steer the thing everywhere I go. Constantly getting 35 mpg on my 6 cylinder 8-speed car.
23.5 mpg average here
The first 8th gen was the best the sohc, ex, coupe stick .
I get 50 mpg out of my Audi A6 avant and that's a 2.0 tdi 2008 model.
Go away. Snob.
The truck is a dud brand new.
The speedo is flickering every other minute.
What ! It has a crappy stereo......thats it I am cancelling my order for my Ridgeline from Honda. Already you guys are pissing me off.
Once in eco mode the truck will never be the same
If you live in a city with high traffic, dont expect to crack over 14mpg.
I routinely average just over 20MPG in those conditions. Grid lock on the other hand, will kill any MPG. Though idlestop could be left engaged to mitigate that.
I have VCM disabled and idlestop, so I am not doing anything special.
my 2019 gets right over 30 mpg on hwy.
