Hey Everyone! I hope you all enjoyed this Fashion 101! I think there is a lot in store for Chanel and I think that a lot will happen soon! XOXOXOXOXOOXOXOXOOXOXOOXOX
Thanks for not glossing over what she was up to in WWII. How does one reconcile purchasing new Chanel products and throwbacks of Gabrielle's designs with her prior actions?
Joey Carpenter I think we have to look at the times. Was she extremely wrong? Yes, but that was the past and as long as the brand does not continue to support the thoughts and ideas of the past I think we should forgive. Many brands have a darker past some that we probably don’t even know about. If we focus on people’s past how will we move on?
@@maddie3329 Hi there. Jew here. Please don't excuse the behaviour. Look at the times now in the US and Europe. Anti-semitism is prevalent. She was a nazi supporter. The Americans supported her. It's just like today.
kind of disrespectful regarding that women at that time rly didn't have any other opportunity but finding a wealthy man no matter how talented they were
These videos are so well done and I'm so happy that there's content out there like this for people who actually wanna learn about fashion and not just clothes. I've taken a class on the history of fashion and your videos are 100 times more informative about the topic. Thank you for this series!
I love those fashion history videos so much! I would love to see something about Le Bon Marché and how it changed the way Parisians bought fashion, but maybe that’s too far back for you? Anyway, keep it on! ♥️
Not sure if you know this, but the s in French had turned into a ^. if you read French books from the 18th century you'd still encounter words that used to be written with a s, but are not anymore in modern French. some examples: forest -> forêt mesme -> même (e.g mismo in Spanish; same) teste -> tête (testa in Italian; head) hospital -> hôpital so chasnel -> Chânel but when written with capital letter the ^ disappears. so that could explain it.
We can't blame the convent for coco's collaboration with the Nazis, she was an opportunist and thought about her selfish goal first! She probably said that to find someone else to blame. The convent didn't ask her to betray her country and to contribute to the genocide of millions of people. Her antisemitisms didn't stopped her to create a perfume with a jewish collaborator, and as soon as she had the opportunity she betrayed him. She was a bitter person that saw with the Nazi an opportunity of ascension, a possibility to live at the Hotel Ritz like a princess during occupation. The convent has nothing to do with her avidity. She was also awful with her fellow designers, she hated everybody that was talented or innovative. I can't respect her. She had no humanity! She was not irreplaceable, we would have done as well or even better without her.
omg!! so glad i decided to check your chanel out after wearilive's video. this was an amazing video thank so much for your knowledge. i hope you continue doing these for other designers/big fashion industry names like Anna Wintour, Balmain, Prada Givenchy, honestly everyone!!! thanks so much once again. subscribed ☑️
I loved it when you talked about Chanel moving into 31 rue Cambon, background image is of shop, and then you said she lived in the apartment upstairs, cut to your apartment.
I love this video! This helped me so much with a school project. I left the url to this video in the credits and in my bibliography. Thank you so much, Luke!!!
Great job. I would have also gone into the fact that she was the original punk rock feminist and changed the face of women and menswear in women's fashion
Do you know how Karl got the job? Like who he met with? (I'm assuming Alain & Gérard Wertheimer) or did Gabrielle respect Karl enough (although they've never met) to want him to take over after her? Also, wondering about her parfums line and how and Gabrielle met Pierre Wertheimir and what their relationship was like, because later in her life she wasn't happy with him and I'm sure that fueled her thoughts on the Jewish people and since she passed, Pierre's family has pretty much taken total ownership of the Chanel line (more than just the parfums line) and registered parent companies and force-ably integrated their own family business's of lamb skin leather and other materials since Gabrielle wasn't around to fight them (which also has me wondering how the Polge family got involved in the business, considering Ernest Beaux & Henri Robert didn't seem to have known them). Ultimately, I'm a massive fan of Gabrielle, but with all the Wertheimer shadiness, I feel bad buying Chanel products and I don't want to help the people that Gabrielle hated get richer. UGH! SO MANY UNANSWERED QUESTIONS! I'd love to hear anything that you know regarding these things.
You talk about Chanel girls and you don't mention Inès de La Fressange ?! wtf ! Plus, Chanel "Amazing shows" didn't started with the "Grocory store" themed collection. Yes it was one them but not the 1st major one.
That can’t be correct. The nuns in the convent wouldn’t have taught her to not like Jews, us Catholics have/are taught to have great respect for the Jewish people as God’s chosen people.
You are Adorable and informative. Please tho for the love of silk please stop saying girl when you mean woman. Channel was WOMAN by the time she really went into business.
maybe you could do a video explaining common phrases/key words in fashion? it's quite a basic thing but good for people like me who don't know much!
Yes
So we all just gonna glaze over the whole “slept with nazis” thing?
I wish history class was this interesting
amen! super interesting and informative!
I swear I have a History exam tomorrow but I’m binge watching his videos save me
E

coco chanel: the original sugar baby!
hahaahahhaahahah i actually laughed
kind of disrespectful regarding that women at that time rly didn't have any other opportunity but finding a wealthy man no matter how talented they were
She did what women were supposed to. You really didn't have a choice but marry a rich man.
@@iamyourophelia8646 I dont respect a nazi supported.
i know this is a joke but she definitely wasn’t the first
So you’re telling me Coco Chanel’s life is basically a Lana Del Rey song.
Emily Martin which song?
is it the one about hating jews?
Title pls
.. heh
I've never gained so much information from a video - ever.
especially information having to do with the fashion industry. great video!

BRING THESE VIDEOS BACK!!!!!
Your video's are so good and different! I love how much information you actually know about the industry!
So basically coco didn’t actually build the brand
Karl did
Yup
Exactly
your channel is the best, it fills a niche on here that wasn't here for awhile.
I love those fashion history videos so much!
I would love to see something about Le Bon Marché and how it changed the way Parisians bought fashion, but maybe that’s too far back for you?
Anyway, keep it on! ♥️

Very interesting way to tell her biography. You should watch COCO AVANT CHANEL, the movie...and I do like Chanel's clothes :-)

I loved it when you talked about Chanel moving into 31 rue Cambon, background image is of shop, and then you said she lived in the apartment upstairs, cut to your apartment.

Please do more of these fashion history videos! Very interesting and youre doing a great job with explaining everything
"liked" it! And loved it. Also the Naomi's one was one of my favorite. It's great to know all the details about her ^^
your nose is soooo beautiful
That tells me that you really have to adapt to the times, like, know your style but be able to adapt.
It was really interesting, thank you! I even think I'm going to re-watch a movie about coco chanel I watched when I was 10.
Great job. I would have also gone into the fact that she was the original punk rock feminist and changed the face of women and menswear in women's fashion
this video was so interesting I didn't

Coincidentally, WW2 is what introduced No.5 perfume to American soldiers when they were in France.
If you use background music, dial the volume down a bit. Its a bit distracting
I need to sit down with you for like... 4 weeks so you can teach me EVERYTHING.
u know so much omg
Hi, is it okay if i use this as a sorce for a paper im writing in school about Gabrielle Chanel? Love your videos btw, old and new!
Really interesting. Thank you.
good research
So insightful thank you 🙏🏽
Thank you Luke!
Can you please do one video like this on Gucci?
I LOVE THIS!!!!

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You talk about Chanel girls and you don't mention Inès de La Fressange ?! wtf ! Plus, Chanel "Amazing shows" didn't started with the "Grocory store" themed collection. Yes it was one them but not the 1st major one.
Someone please tell me what the music is at the end?!
It’s called L’amour nasissant - by Sebastien tellier
💞Chanel
didnt know the nazi thing but damn chanel's story has always inspired me! i wonder is she was anti-black as well
She was French so probably.
Anyways stan Karl
I wish you spoke more about fashion trends Chanel started and less about history facts and love affairs.
It’s Capel like repel 😂
:o
Well Karl Lagerfeld is dead now
That can’t be correct. The nuns in the convent wouldn’t have taught her to not like Jews, us Catholics have/are taught to have great respect for the Jewish people as God’s chosen people.
Im sad you left out the history of mainstay chanel items (shoes, bags) in this story
Chanel a "brand " ..?!?!?!?!? The house of Chanel ...please! !!!
You are Adorable and informative. Please tho for the love of silk please stop saying girl when you mean woman. Channel was WOMAN by the time she really went into business.
watching just you talking with no editing/minimal visual clues/pictures, and a messy background is dull
The fretful sailor alarmingly bathe because plantation immuhistochemically brake till a observant dragonfly. naughty, likeable explanation
STOP TOUCHING YOUR FACE OMG
Bad. Sorry.
The research for this video sounds like ten minutes on Google. While doing your research did you come across any effective brands of Butch Up pills??
Awesome but your extra movements were disturbing.
