Thank you for the honesty. I've been looking to buy either a cameo or a cricut maker and trying to figure out what each machine can do has been quite a task. I still can't decide between the two machines but it looks like wood cutting isn't a thing you should be expecting to do on either.
Honestly neither machine is really good at cutting wood -- they can both butcher their way through it on a very basic, occasional project with a LOT of patients and deep breathing!! If you really want to cut a lot of wood project there are better options out there.
Great Video and thank you for sharing. I've tried cutting beermat with 1.6mm thick but the blade always turn and like stuck. its so hard dealing with it. it makes me so stressful i've been wasted so many beermat papers.
Kinda depends on what you want to cut. The piece I held up was made on a glowforge, it’s a laser cutter & is all the rage currently. It uses a laser to cut out wood, acrylic, leather, etc. But even a cheap jigsaw would do a better job!! CNC Machines are also out there at various price points. All depends on what you want to cut, why, how often & how much you want to spend!!
Last night I got the brainstorm to try this for inlaying veneer. I don't know if it will work yet but it is only .04" thick and might work with repeating the cuts and increasing the depth each time. If it works, it will definitely simplify the job. For veneering there is a water-based tape for holding the parts together. You might be able to use it for your projects. It's called veneer tape and might hold those parts together. Rewet it to remove it.
I have had veneer to try & cut for YEARS, I just have never gotten around to it! It should work in theory & give a cool look -- maybe this summer! I'll look for the veneer tape!!
Foolow up. I did try it and it didn't come close to working. I was trying it on Maple veneer and this could be the reason. The knife didn't cut it simply shoved the veneer around. Even when I held it in place by hand. Something softer than maple maybe?

Thank you i wanted to cut MDF and was going to upgrade me cameo 3 to a 4 to cut wood. After seeing this i will go look at a better machine to cut wood.
I'm with you on the Cameo, I call mine my delicate flower! lol I can't get it to even go to carriage 2 with a 3mm blade on light chipboard!!! How did you get yours to use it? I keep getting no cut setting for carriage 2, 3mm blade and chipboard.
In the send panel, it says tool 1 and tool 2, You click on the down arrow for tool 2 & select your shape from there. It will light up blue when you have tool 2 selected. I have never had good luck cutting any kind of chipboard on the cameo 4, so good luck!

There also options like the Snapmaker 2 which can 3D print, laser etching/cutting, and CNC carving. support.snapmaker.com/hc/en-us/categories/360001781913-Snapmaker-2-0
I'm glad you're honest about the limitations of the kraft blade. It's so frustrating. It really cant even cut regular chipboard. I just tried and I'm glad I have a snapmaker 2 (laser, cnc, and 3d print) coming soon. I feel like silhouette made a lot of promises it couldn't keep. Carriage 2 is just brute force. Not accurate at all. My Cameo 1 is still more reliable and precise than the 4's carriage 1.
I am glad you appreciated my honesty, I felt a bit like a buzz kill making this video!! I am really hoping that Silhouette comes out with more tools for Carriage 2, because that Kraft Blade is really annoying to use!!
Great video and thank you for your honesty, that goes a long way. I want to cut small shapes in veneer. I see Cricut sells veneer and a few people are doing it. Would this be a better choice? What options aside from a laser cutter are out there. Thank you again.
I'm glad you appreciated the honesty, I felt bad being so blunt!! I have veneer to cut, but I never have done it. I would guess it would cut better than the Basa wood in the video--my only concern be brittle to cut or thin to get on and off the of the mat--but that's a guess. I don't cut wood, so I don't have a lotta of experience with the tools that are out there for it.
Short answer, honestly I don't know. The force in carriage 2, is so much greater than is available in the curio but the wood is so thin I am not sure you really need all the force to cut it. The 2mm Kraft Blades fit in the Curio....so maybe!

I am following your tutorial, I have 1.5mm balsa 3mm kraft blade and silhouette cameo 4, but my blade just binds up when I try to cut, I cant figure out what I am doing wrong, any advice? double and triple checked that the settings are as you say.
Honestly that's partly to be expected when dealing with that Kraft Blade. Make sure your design isn't to small with detailed tight or sharo turns. Also try starting with a lower blade number like 3 or so & then work your way up to the higher number -- it sometimes help to give the blade a groove to cut in when it get to the deeper cut settings. Good Luck!
I have not, I did try to cut real Chipboard and it was too thick, so it was causing the blade to turn while cutting. That Kraft Blade is just so finicky!!
First time watching your videos! I wanted to do a wood project and use my cameo and I enjoyed your advice! I ordered some wood and blade through your Amazon! I’m excited for my new projects! I have a crafters TH-cam, super new, but I’m having so much fun! Thank you for sharing!
@@MissMaryEmbroidery you’re welcome! I get it! It gets expensive getting supplies for videos every week. I do a lot of dollar tree crafts and thrift flips, my middle name is frugal 😂 my channel should have been called Freckled Frugal Mom
Thank you for your honesty up front. You saved me a lot of searching, money and headaches. 😁
I'm glad that it helped!!!
Do you have a laser cutter that you would recommend
I have never bought a Laser Cutter, I start researching them, get overwhelmed & then stopped looking!

Sorry, wish I had words of wisdom for you but I've had the same experience with that Kraft Blade trying to cut thicker chipboard.
THANK YOU for being so honest about it NOT doing a great job cutting wood!
i'm glad you appreciate it, I felt a little mean making it! ha!
Well you’ve just saved me buying the completely wrong machine. Thank you!!
Well I am glad that I could help you!

thanks for sharing, btw can it be used on acrylic with a thickness of 2 mm ?
No the Cameo can't cut Acrylic.
Can you make a tutorial on how to cut air freshener felt type paper on your cameo for it to be sublimated on
You are probably better off just buying that sublimation blank somewhere rather than trying to make them yourself.
Can it be done with the Curio?

Can you cut acrylic there
No you cannot cut acrylic
have you tried mdf ?
I have not personally but I highly doubt it can cut it.
Nice video and explanation.
By the way I love your dog.

had high hopes seeming laser work in your hand but still watch your video anyways
Yeah....I wanted to make sure people knew that the Cameo can't doing what the lasers can!
