    The “I‘ve spent most of my life just chasing shiny things“ resonated with me. I know you are not directly trying but provide a lot of guidance with your videos. Please, never stop. Good luck!

    Honestly John what you’re doing right now legitimately feels like the right way ahead. Like you’re in a spot where you’re no longer confused but rather curious about what your shortcomings have been and more sort of why you couldn’t solve them on your own. The mentorship method would help you understand that exactly without having to undergo all the mental turmoil. In a nutshell, good decision!

    Graduated two years ago, worked for about a year, then now trying to build something myself but feeling extremely lost and left behind. I am tearing up watching this. It's like I just had a great conversation with a friend and it worked! Thanks, John! And good luck out there...

      same here, I graduated two years ago I only worked 3-4 months on a contract project then after that I wanted to start my own company but I am kinda struggling to make things work and some of my former classmates think I'm doing it wrong ofc they r employed to someone's company but I don't think I belong to work for someone's company. I just want to make my dream come true. good luck to everyone who is chasing their dreams.

    John, you've solved most of my problems through this channel. I was on the verge of giving up on my Computer science degree as a freshman and then I discovered 'A Day in Life of a Harvard Computer Science Student'. When I hit some dead ends on how to start a tech startup this video popped up. Keep pushing on creating more videos. Absolutely educative and full of insights. Can't wait to see the books you have been reading so far.

    You’re such an intelligent person and not just smart. I always think it’s so fascinating how well you’re able to self-analyse and create a plan to change the things you see as faults. I love seeing you develop and grow because it inspires me to do so as well.

    I find myself asking the same questions, John. Especially after graduating, I’ve found that chasing the shiny things have pulled me far away from the things that sustain me as a human being. This video came at the right time for me, thank you for being so open and honest about your experience. Have the best time in LA!

  • @avolynfisher
    @avolynfisher 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Super excited for you!
    Just be sure that you're not getting taken advantage of (you're very smart so I'm sure you'd see it) but I followed a friend who I looked up to, helped her with an organization she started, and ultimately most of what I thought she'd had figured out was her "front," she didn't care so much to mentor me as get my eager and excited help, and I didn't learn that much because once I got a look under the hood there was nothing about her I wanted to emulate.
    Not saying this is you. Or your situation.
    Saying, keep an eye out because I didn't. But I truly believe it all happens for a reason and it's impossible that this wasn't the right move because even if it doesn't work out (worst case) the end will position you for the next beginning that was meant for you! Can't go wrong honestly ❤

    Your older videos that you claimed to be “not that good” are the reason I found and subscribed to your channel in the first place. I would be interested in a video dedicated specifically about your opinion on what a “balanced” life could/should look like. Balance seems to be everyone’s goal, but I’m not sure I’ve met anyone who has achieved it. Is it more of an “ebb and flow” situation? Does it just mean not being consumed by one or more areas in life? Great video as always!

    • @astridthepastrid
      @astridthepastrid 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      balance is a way of life, it is the way. It is not something you "Achieve." You're not supposed to look at it like a goal to achieve because that way you're already not honoring the sustainability that balance is about. Overtime, as you prioritize each aspect of your life that is important to you and your health, you will feel more balanced.

    Hey john. I don’t usually comment but felt the need to share. I am also graduating college this year and have been experiencing what society says we should do, which is “chase the shiny thing”. Where’s the fulfillment in that? I no longer feel drawn to that and have clarity on pursuing interests and jobs that make me wake up with a smile on my face excited to see what the day brings. I am happy you’re pursuing things that align with your purpose and goals and I will be that you will be a lot happier and a lot more “successful” as well. The world is your oyster!!

    I recently got a great paying job in my ideal career field for the degree I'm about to get, but then I also took some time to think about it more and realized that I am not happy in this career field and it's not hitting the spot for me working in this job. So I decided to go back to school and just go all out on my dream that I told myself for years I wasn't smart enough, financially stable, too risky, etc. Granted I'm in a different scenario financially, emotionally, and personally not that has allowed me to make this decision, but I feel confident in it. Anyways I think this is great that you made this decision John! When you believe in something and you're truly passionate in it, people see that and will naturally follow or appreciate it a lot more

    I moved to western Europe to study, and one of the biggest lessons I learned from my new "home" (also realized there is no place that I can just move in and feel it like it is truly home anymore, "home" is more like something you establish rather than a physical place... such thing when being born most of us get for granted, but our parents actually work very hard to create it)... the thing I learnt is to not be mentally attached to my belongings, if I put a sentimental value to every single thing, then the weight pins me down, so just like in Fight club, when you get free from the weight, you are free to do anything i.e. move anywhere, live in the other part of the world and not be bothered at all...

    i know this is super random to mention linkedin here, but its crazy to think about how behind every person you encounter on there, there's a story behind why they went to school X, pursued role Y at company Z, and so on and so forth. everyone probably has had these inflexion points in their lives where they decide "you know what? im going for this", putting their eggs all in one basket, without really knowing what the future holds for them.

Experience what is needed to get a company from nothing to successful while working along someone’s who has built a successful company before

    You sure aren’t afraid of taking a big leap. Good luck. Mr. Fish. Watch out for wildfires and Hurricane Kay.

    Hey John!
    You mentioned in your video that you started your own company and it generated profit. However, I remember you were Canadian and technically and international student in US. I was wondering how were you able to do it legally? Or am I missing something?

    the video didn't really addres why you moved to LA though. Any reason why you chose a place that isn't necessarily known for being authentic to yourself nor for "not chasing shiny things" if that's what you say you're after? Did you have a plan at all for what you'd be doing here?

      Right. Aside from the points you
      mention, some former residents and visitors also mention it’s one of the STD capitals of the world, among other creepy things.

    Life is funny - that is exactly what I am thinking about all the time rn and just then you post a video sharing your thoughts about it 😂🙏
    Really enjoyed listening to your thought process - I’m kind of in the same situation but I don’t really know how I can learn from someone since I have no valuable skill in regards to something start-up related :/ I’m a dentistry student and tbh really not that happy with this becoming my career even though I can see all the positive aspects of it - so I’m searching for something that I’d really enjoy doing but damn that’s hard 🥲

      Try new things! Look at things you enjoyed doing growing up. Even figuring out you don’t like something will continue to help you find the things you do like eventually!
