Great video, and I agree that Asha should have gotten a costume change. Magnifico isn't a villain, but the weird thing is it's easy to imagine how they could have made him a villain. Like if he did demand that people give him the wishes instead of it being voluntary, or if the city had a lot of poverty but he stayed in charge by granting just enough wishes that everyone was like "Yes we have problems but what if MY wish is granted next? We can't get rid of Magnifico!" Instead he's just . . .a pretty reasonable guy who altruistically grants wishes.
I like how you brought up the mandatory wish giving when that was in one of the first drafts of the script, where Asha comes from a secret village in an enchanted forest not too far from Rosas. (Its secret because these people refuse to give Magnífico their wish and otherwise they’d all be in jail) you should look up some of the old storyboards they’re really good, especially “the wishing tree”
NGL, to me Asha is the villain. Magnifico invented wish magic, he's under no obligation to use it. He built a kingdom where there was nothing, so nobody who lives in Rosas does so under duress. They came there explicitly because they wanted Magnifico to grant their wishes. He doesn't promise to grant any one wish at a specific time, or at all. He promises to grant whichever ones he thinks best and keep the others safe. Now, it could be argued that maybe his judgement of which wish to keep is flawed. Or that maybe he should give the wishes he knows he won't grant back. The problem is that they didn't show any sign that he's being, well, evil. No desperate people being thrown out of the castle because they annoyed the king with their begging. No people being herded to a ship because they refused to hand over their wishes but wanted to stay with their family, who had. No people being hunted down for refusing to hand the wish over and staying in hiding. No scene of Magnifico consuming wishes until AFTER he turned to dark magic, which he only did AFTER Asha started threatening to take the wishes he is safeguarding. No guards suppressing unruly citizens that want to storm the castle to retrieve the wishes he holds. He's a decent man who built a kingdom of happy, well-fed and protected people who overreacted to a threat because of past trauma.
Magnifico was honestly justified in being entitled. Look, if i spent decades making sure my citizens were happy and protected, i would also be upset if they never once said a genuine "thank you" and kept asking me for more things. Magnifico was a man that was taken advantage of and eventually broke down

To discover that they don't truly respect him and only "adore" him for what he can do to benefit THEM.. that would be really upsetting. Making nuanced antagonists like Magnifico is way too complicated for Disney, it is so much easier to make him go psycho than to actually have the hero refute or challenge his worldview. Disney did the same thing 10 years ago with Hans from Frozen. Both started out as noble characters who had understandable motivations only to be reduced to cackling villains by the final act. The difference is Frozen was a pretty good movie (even with its glaring writing flaws) but Wish has really nothing going for it.
To answer the question of the Peter Pan and Snow White references... It was the 100 year anniversary, so of course they would feel the need to shoehorn their legacy in a way that's more obvious than usual. Even if the reference itself doesn't make any sense (Peter Pan's supposed to be a kid, no older than 12 or 13, while "Peter" doesn't look a day under 16).

As a small TH-camr (and quite young one) that has also seen the movie about a week ago,I personally don't think that Magnifico is that much of a vilian until he gets so upset and does the whole "This is the thanks I get!?" song and use the evil magic. And Asha not only manipulates her friends into thinking that Magnifico is in the wrong just because he thinks that a lot of the wishes are dangerous and is trying to protect Rosas,she also makes Queen Amaya side with her. To me,she's kinda unlikeable,even tho I see why she would say that,but still. Also,her voice annoys me. Like,a lot.
Asha basically caused everyone to turn against Magnifico because he wouldn't grant her grandfather's wish. It was all about her wants really. She's an entitled brat.
To be fair to the princess part, I believe Mulan is considered a Disney princess as well, and she also remains a commoner even after the story. I could be wrong about her being considered a Disney princess, free to correct me! But otherwise I very much agree with many parts of the video!
So to be considered a disney princess, there are a few categories of criterias. One of the categories is how to be considered a "princess", and there are 3 ways. 1)be born into royalty (or whatever the equivalent of their birth place is) like snow white, pocahontas, Ariel, etc. 2) be married into royalty, like Cinderella, Ariel, Tiana, etc. The third category was actually made JUST for Mulan, and that is to do an extremely heroic act. So even if we take Mulan's placement into account, Asha should not qualify.

So glad you pointed as Asha's design because I don't hear anyone talking about that. I love what they did with her face. I don't know if anyone has noticed, but Disney tends to make their female characters look like babies, with ridiculously large eyes, button noses, and button noses without a bridge. Take a look at Elsa and Anna from Frozen--they are by far the worst example of this, they look like this weird fusion of woman and infant. Aisha looks different from this, while yes she has a cute face with big eyes, she actually has a nose bridge, her eyes aren't taking up 90% of her face, and her face is proportioned like a teenager--not a weird infant with the body of a woman. Her facial design is probably the best I've seen so far. But they did her so dirty with that dress. She looks like she's wearing rags. Where is the color? The vibrancy? The fun little details? No embroidery, lace, ribbon, or embellishment? And as much as I like the long hair, she would've looked a little more memorable if they braided her hair and weaved some flowers between each braid. It's a shame because character design is so important in animation, its what makes a character stand out, makes you want to know more about them, makes you want to buy their merch because they look so good. Aisha's design is so flat and lifeless, just like her personality. They did her so dirty.
I wanna talk about that clothing thing, Asha actually has the most complex design of all the teens, her kirtle has these white dots that look like stars woven into the fabric, and the bottom of her kirtle has a woven design of the Rosas insignia, along with other patterns, her surcoat is hemmed with a darker purple along the neck and sleeves, there's embroidered yellow loops along the neckline as-well which is very complementary, and her clothing being purple alone already makes it extremely extravagant. During the Middle Ages and a little while before that, purple was a very expensive color collected from Blackberries, Mulberries, Orchil, and the mucus and shells of sea snails from the Mediterranean Sea. Her clothing being “dull” is historically accurate, what’s not is the fact that she can wear purple. Also, they likely took out her adornments in her braids (she used to have them in previous designs) because she already wore plenty of jewelry and these sillies at Disney don’t want to use more of their 200 million budget to properly animate the physics on box braids, let alone let them have pretty stuff on them.

And, yes, there are small details in her dress but you can barely see them from afar. Small details are only appreciated when the outfit as a whole is memorable and it is not. As for purple being a extravagant color, where in the film is this mentioned or even implied? If purple is so extravagant, why is the king and queen dressed in gold and beige? Also, the lighting in this film makes the colors so dull and lifeless so even though Asha is wearing purple, its looks like a poor man's shade of purple.
Such a great first video! I agreed with a lot of our opinions as well! I feel like Asha as a character could have had so much potential had she been written better- and the whole plot of the movie as well, let’s face it. I never thought I’d say I really disliked a Disney Princess until Wish came out (And what’s worse is that she’s rumored to join the official Princess lineup at some point 😖). It makes me prefer Raya over her in terms of recent Disney Princesses and that’s saying something cause I could not stand Raya at first- but at least she’s the daughter of a chief and had a genuine personality aside from being quirky and obnoxious like Asha and nothing else. I’m all for quirky characters in movies, but only if that’s not their whole personality, you know? Also you’re not trippin’ about Asha’s outfit either- while I do like that it’s a color other than the standard neutral ones peasants often wear in movies, I was really disappointed by it in terms of Disney Princess outfits- like that set of rags is not gonna be iconic like the dresses the other princesses are wearing. Anything that screams “I’m fighting starvation in District 12 on Reaping Day” is not gonna be remembered for years to come 🤣🤣🤣
Was said that Asha as a character could have so much potential if they had written it better if only they had told me all the made up fairy tale stories I want to hear and have been conditioned to hear, know and expect I would love it so much more. All the time every girl/ female dreaming of being a princess or to be a part of a kingdom or just to know the King/queen and princess etc knowing only a few real families of the world is true royalty most are not from royalty. We want to hear this so bad we accept it while knowing it will always be an unattainable dream…. (to be ordinary people with extra ordinary dreams is only for the elite) they literally said it the king grants the wishes he decided. But we rather the fairytales where we are willing to kiss a frog to become a princess. I don’t know but kissing a frog is like marrying someone you don’t want to just to become a Princess. ( I don’t want to go sugar daddy / someone you don’t love but how else can you get there) go ahead …. I will wait. Are we that desperate, what’s next Disney have us kiss the alligator to make it out of poverty to become a princess notice only the minority princess does these things. And it’s people and even the king from himself. Magnifico not bad but his ideas are, happens with all kings/ people in authority that thinks they alone have all the answers. Disney finally saying forget the dress it doesn’t make you a Princess that could all come in time with a dream a wish etc, instead focus on being the best person you can be you may not be born into a wealth/ a royal family but dreams can come true your wish can happen. I think a story like this is more attainable and with in reach of all of us who still dream.
I think that what really makes her unlikeable and a villain, is that in the first song we already know that she knew about the wishes and how not all of them get granted, as well as only caring about that "issue" once it affects her. If she was a newcomer to Rosas, it would make so much sense as it would show that she didn't know. Also, she kinda turned Magnifico into a villain by turning the town against him
I also think it’s the wishes are actually different dimensions that ppl made up there own worlds as for Asha or whatever her name is spelled didn’t learn anything like careful what you wish for and the consequences that happened but her as a godmother is just not a good idea because she’s a people pleaser. And they could have made her outfit a bit better if they really wanted her to be the godmother she would need an update maybe put in some shining.Hair pens in her hair with stars on her cape she just doesn’t stick out as much. There was no lesson like make a wish and nothing bad will happen someone might need a doctor and ends up wishing for death or end of the world.
They really did all of this and even had a cut ending where Amaya killed him when Magnífico just needed some therapy. This movie really speaks about how society ignores those suffering from mental health/mental disorders until they become “out of control” that way they can get locked up and labeled as dangerous psychopaths.

AUTO from WALL-E was literally just doing his job and following the orders. Same as HAL, just following the admittedly braindead stupid orders, given by upper management. They were made in way that makes them unable to deviate from the orders, very unlike the other robots in WALL-E, who were allowed to creatively reinterpret orders. AUTO and HAL are both plot devices dressed as antagonistic characters without actual free will, which makes them both creepy and interesting.
Yes indeed, Asha does have a fine character design, as does Star and everyone else in the movie. The character designs were one of the few truly great things in this movie. It's too bad that they're wasted in such a bland movie like this one, although I'll admit that the movie does improve somewhat in the 2nd half of the movie when Magnifico randomly becomes evil out of nowhere.
So a beautiful dress for all the Princesses but what did they do to better the lives of others they found true love and lived happily ever after cool. Most of us in life gets to marry the person we love and have the fairytale wedding and castle like homes etc but does that ever help others dream come true. Asha made everyone realize that their true desires and dreams are important to them. Asha wish came true by being true to herself. She’s different and that’s why I like her. Most fairy tales are just that tales Asha maybe one of the few Disney stories that seams to be somewhat true. Her personality etc. It would be weird to someday find out that Disney told us a fairy tale like story and it wasn’t a fairytale.
Hello from Malaysia, I was very skeptical about seeing this film, until I'd read all of the reviews saying that it's not worth watching. Did you see Once Upon A Studio as well? I saw it but I wasn't very happy with the animation style on several of the characters, especially with the Disney Princesses.
I did see Once Upon A Studio and I agree the animations weren’t to my liking. They weren’t terrible but they weren’t great either. I also agree that the Disney princesses stuck out the most and not in a good way.
I think the movie would have been better with subtle or overt references to Disney Princesses visiting the kingdom, similar to how "Wreck-It Ralph" included various characters. Imagine all the Disney Princesses appearing in the background or the movie centered around them attending a grand event. This would create a celebration feel, suitable for an anniversary film. Peter Pan's story doesn't need to be included, as it seems to exist in a different timeline. However, there could be a format that sets this in the future, considering Arendelle's historical setting. For example, a director hinted that Elsa's parents didn't die but crash-landed on an island, becoming Tarzan's parents. This implies different timelines and settings for various Disney stories. Some countries in the Disney universe could be depicted as more advanced while others remain medieval, similar to how some tribal and modern cities coexist today. This would allow for a diverse representation of different settings and eras. The movie could explain why Peter Pan is older and not in Neverland. Perhaps he left Neverland to be with Wendy, her daughter or another girl/boy who didn't want to stay in Neverland, which caused him to age. This would provide a logical backstory and integrate him into the broader Disney universe. To reference old Disney movies effectively, the film could include the princesses' descendants visiting the kingdom and interacting with each other. This would create a rich, interconnected storyline, acknowledging the anniversary celebration. Lol the part where you say that Magnifico wasn't scary. He was, to me, heartless at some points. For example, when he broke Asha's mother's wish right in front of her. Gosh. I felt that tiny scene, even when the woman said hrr daughter made a mistake. That was heartless for me.

He could reach back into the wish bubble room and pick a wish to fix the problem. He could make money poof out of thin air, and thus, he wouldn't need their taxes.
She doesn’t have pretty clothes but she has a beautiful heart. You not tired of hearing that you have to be a princess and marry a prince and born into royalty to be someone. That’s the whole point of the story a wish upon a star literally making dreams come true
I think the evil of King Magnifico was meant to come later, as he was initially a good person who did everything for the best of his citizens. The song "This is the Thanks I Get" reflects the general discontent he feels. It's strange that the song begins with someone asking, "What if I don't want the wish after I get the reward for bringing you this new creature?" In my opinion, this might have been a tipping point. King Magnifico had to deny wishes, and people likely complained about that. People often show disrespect for authority, particularly Americans, who dislike being told what to do. This attitude might have been reflected in his citizens. Some of his citizens may have been ornery and disrespectful. While many loved King Magnifico because he was a good king, others, like Aisha's grandfather, were angry when they couldn't get their wishes. I think the song from the king comes from the feeling of: "I gave you something you wanted, and you're unhappy with the reward I gave you?" When I watched the lyric video of the song, it was clear that something was taking over King Magnifico. Around the time he encountered the book, the video showcased two colors: green and yellow. Green seemed to represent the evil influence of the book corrupting him, while yellow represented his true, good intentions. The mixture of the two colors suggests a struggle between his original personality and the corrupting influence. I don't think he became evil purely due to his own personality, I think it's because he was messing with the dark magic, and whatever spirit was in the book began to change him for his power.

Those wishes feel good, the better the wish, the stronger the good will. ...what wishes did he grant? a man wanted butterflies on his head and some woman wanted to make the most beautiful dresses. As a small TH-camr (and quite young one) that has also seen the movie about a week ago,I personally don't think that Magnifico is that much of a vilian until he gets so upset and does the whole "This is the thanks I get!?" song and use the evil magic. And Asha not only manipulates her friends into thinking that Magnifico is in the wrong just because he thinks that a lot of the wishes are dangerous and is trying to protect Rosas,she also makes Queen Amaya side with her. To me,she's kinda unlikeable,even tho I see why she would say that,but still. Also,her voice annoys me. Like,a lot.
Asha basically caused everyone to turn against Magnifico because he wouldn't grant her grandfather's wish. It was all about her wants really. She's an entitled brat.

To be fair to the princess part, I believe Mulan is considered a Disney princess as well, and she also remains a commoner even after the story. I could be wrong about her being considered a Disney princess, free to correct me!

So to be considered a disney princess, there are a few categories of criterias. One of the categories is how to be considered a "princess", and there are 3 ways. 1)be born into royalty (or whatever the equivalent of their birth place is) like snow white, pocahontas, Ariel, etc. 2) be married into royalty, like Cinderella, Ariel, Tiana, etc. The third category was actually made JUST for Mulan, and that is to do an extremely heroic act. So even if we take Mulan's placement into account, Asha should not qualify.

So glad you pointed as Asha's design because I don't hear anyone talking about that. I love what they did with her face. I don't know if anyone has noticed, but Disney tends to make their female characters look like babies, with ridiculously large eyes, button noses, and button noses without a bridge. Take a look at Elsa and Anna from Frozen--they are by far the worst example of this, they look like this weird fusion of woman and infant. Aisha looks different from this, while yes she has a cute face with big eyes, she actually has a nose bridge, her eyes aren't taking up 90% of her face, and her face is proportioned like a teenager--not a weird infant with the body of a woman. Her facial design is probably the best I've seen so far. But they did her so dirty with that dress. She looks like she's wearing rags. Where is the color? The vibrancy? The fun little details? No embroidery, lace, ribbon, or embellishment? And as much as I like the long hair, she would've looked a little more memorable if they braided her hair and weaved some flowers between each braid. It's a shame because character design is so important in animation, its what makes a character stand out, makes you want to know more about them, makes you want to buy their merch because they look so good. Aisha's design is so flat and lifeless, just like her personality. They did her so dirty.
I wanna talk about that clothing thing, Asha actually has the most complex design of all the teens, her kirtle has these white dots that look like stars woven into the fabric, and the bottom of her kirtle has a woven design of the Rosas insignia, along with other patterns, her surcoat is hemmed with a darker purple along the neck and sleeves, there's embroidered yellow loops along the neckline as-well which is very complementary, and her clothing being purple alone already makes it extremely extravagant. During the Middle Ages and a little while before that, purple was a very expensive color collected from Blackberries, Mulberries, Orchil, and the mucus and shells of sea snails from the Mediterranean Sea. Her clothing being “dull” is historically accurate, what’s not is the fact that she can wear purple. Also, they likely took out her adornments in her braids (she used to have them in previous designs) because she already wore plenty of jewelry and these sillies at Disney don’t want to use more of their 200 million budget to properly animate the physics on box braids, let alone let them have pretty stuff on them.

And, yes, there are small details in her dress but you can barely see them from afar. Small details are only appreciated when the outfit as a whole is memorable and it is not. As for purple being a extravagant color, where in the film is this mentioned or even implied? If purple is so extravagant, why is the king and queen dressed in gold and beige? Also, the lighting in this film makes the colors so dull and lifeless so even though Asha is wearing purple, its looks like a poor man's shade of purple.
Such a great first video! I agreed with a lot of our opinions as well! I feel like Asha as a character could have had so much potential had she been written better- and the whole plot of the movie as well, let’s face it. I never thought I’d say I really disliked a Disney Princess until Wish came out (And what’s worse is that she’s rumored to join the official Princess lineup at some point 😖). It makes me prefer Raya over her in terms of recent Disney Princesses and that’s saying something cause I could not stand Raya at first- but at least she’s the daughter of a chief and had a genuine personality aside from being quirky and obnoxious like Asha and nothing else. I’m all for quirky characters in movies, but only if that’s not their whole personality, you know?
Also you’re not trippin’ about Asha’s outfit either- while I do like that it’s a color other than the standard neutral ones peasants often wear in movies, I was really disappointed by it in terms of Disney Princess outfits- like that set of rags is not gonna be iconic like the dresses the other princesses are wearing. Anything that screams “I’m fighting starvation in District 12 on Reaping Day” is not gonna be remembered for years to come 🤣🤣🤣

We want to hear this so bad we accept it while knowing it will always be an unattainable dream…. (to be ordinary people with extra ordinary dreams is only for the elite) they literally said it the king grants the wishes he decided. But we rather the fairytales where we are willing to kiss a frog to become a princess. I don’t know but kissing a frog is like marrying someone you don’t want to just to become a Princess. ( I don’t want to go sugar daddy / someone you don’t love but how else can you get there) go ahead …. I will wait.

I love this movie I’ve been waiting years for a story like this!!!! Did anyone notice a man didn’t come riding on a white horse to save a girl but the opposite happened without beautiful clothes she saved everyone from loosing themselves and to believe their ideas matter that dream dreams matter that their happiness matter ( glad you see her as a princess no one said she was) that’s the point! ) however the girl for the first time save an entire kingdom!!! And it’s people and even the king from himself.
Magnifico not bad but his ideas are, happens with all kings/ people in authority that thinks they alone have all the answers.
Disney finally saying forget the dress it doesn’t make you a Princess that could all come in time with a dream a wish etc, instead focus on being the best person you can be you may not be born into a wealth/ a royal family but dreams can come true your wish can happen. I think a story like this is more attainable and with in reach of all of us who still dream.
I think that what really makes her unlikeable and a villain, is that in the first song we already know that she knew about the wishes and how not all of them get granted, as well as only caring about that "issue" once it affects her. If she was a newcomer to Rosas, it would make so much sense as it would show that she didn't know.

I also think it’s the wishes are actually different dimensions that ppl made up there own worlds as for Asha or whatever her name is spelled didn’t learn anything like careful what you wish for and the consequences that happened but her as a godmother is just not a good idea because she’s a people pleaser. And they could have made her outfit a bit better if they really wanted her to be the godmother she would need an update maybe put in some shining.Hair pens in her hair with stars on her cape she just doesn’t stick out as much. There was no lesson like make a wish and nothing bad will happen someone might need a doctor and ends up wishing for death or end of the world.
They really did all of this and even had a cut ending where Amaya killed him when Magnífico just needed some therapy.
This movie really speaks about how society ignores those suffering from mental health/mental disorders until they become “out of control” that way they can get locked up and labeled as dangerous psychopaths.

AUTO from WALL-E was literally just doing his job and following the orders. Same as HAL, just following the admittedly braindead stupid orders, given by upper management. They were made in way that makes them unable to deviate from the orders, very unlike the other robots in WALL-E, who were allowed to creatively reinterpret orders. AUTO and HAL are both plot devices dressed as antagonistic characters without actual free will, which makes them both creepy and interesting.
Yes indeed, Asha does have a fine character design, as does Star and everyone else in the movie. The character designs were one of the few truly great things in this movie. It's too bad that they're wasted in such a bland movie like this one, although I'll admit that the movie does improve somewhat in the 2nd half of the movie when Magnifico randomly becomes evil out of nowhere.
So a beautiful dress for all the Princesses but what did they do to better the lives of others they found true love and lived happily ever after cool. Most of us in life gets to marry the person we love and have the fairytale wedding and castle like homes etc but does that ever help others dream come true.
Asha made everyone realize that their true desires and dreams are important to them. Asha wish came true by being true to herself. She’s different and that’s why I like her. Most fairy tales are just that tales Asha maybe one of the few Disney stories that seams to be somewhat true. Her personality etc. It would be weird to someday find out that Disney told us a fairy tale like story and it wasn’t a fairytale.

Hello from Malaysia, I was very skeptical about seeing this film, until I'd read all of the reviews saying that it's not worth watching. Did you see Once Upon A Studio as well? I saw it but I wasn't very happy with the animation style on several of the characters, especially with the Disney Princesses.
I did see Once Upon A Studio and I agree the animations weren’t to my liking. They weren’t terrible but they weren’t great either. I also agree that the Disney princesses stuck out the most and not in a good way.

I think the movie would have been better with subtle or overt references to Disney Princesses visiting the kingdom, similar to how "Wreck-It Ralph" included various characters. Lol the part where you say that Magnifico wasn't scary. He was, to me, heartless at some points. For example, when he broke Asha's mother's wish right in front of her. Gosh. I felt that tiny scene, even when the woman said hrr daughter made a mistake. That was heartless for me.

King Magnifico had to deny wishes, and people likely complained about that. People often show disrespect for authority, particularly Americans, who dislike being told what to do. This attitude might have been reflected in his citizens.
Some of his citizens may have been ornery and disrespectful. While many loved King Magnifico because he was a good king, others, like Aisha's grandfather, were angry when they couldn't get their wishes. I think the song from the king comes from the feeling of: "I gave you something you wanted, and you're unhappy with the reward I gave you?"

I don't think he became evil purely due to his own personality, I think it's because he was messing with the dark magic, and whatever spirit was in the book began to change him for his power.

He only became a "villain" because of being corrupted by the book and he was only corrupted by the book because of Asha. Therefore, Asha is the villain. If you remove her from the story nothing bad happens. She is behind every bad thing that happens in the entire movie.
