I really wish they’d skip the built in soundbar and make it smaller and less expensive. I’ve got the sound part covered.

Love that motorized screen. Love the short throw projectors, great for smaller rooms like mine. My gear credenza would let me put the center just below the projector. It is about 28 inches deep, and 26 inches high. So I could put both screen, and projector on top of it. I just might have to give this some consideration! Have a great day everybody!

Nice screen, I started looking at projection for HT applications to fly over a normal TV for movie nights.
That's the optimal setup. TV for daytime, projector for night time movie viewing.
7:50 Yes, that's pretty much all UST projectors. You're encountering what is referred to as "optical field curvature" where all the rays of light aren't coming into alignment on the same plane at the same focal distance. The lens elements required to project what is actually a really small DLP or LCD image up to the screen size you have, sacrifices need to be made, and it's usually corner sharpness. Without a bunch of corrective lens elements, which would make for a huge projector and probably a dimmer image, there's no getting around this. It's also not helped by the fact that the projector isn't hung central to the screen it's projecting on. Short and medium throw lenses can also exhibit this issue if they're not aligned just right with the screen.

Thanks for the great review! I understand that by putting it 17inch away from the wall will give you 150'' image. I wonder whether you are able to shrink the image while putting it this far? As I have a smaller screen while I have to place the projector on my coffee table which is actually 20inch away from the screen.
Great job, Joe. I think vava and vivdstorm are now happy campers. I managed to integrate a UST optoma p1 in my system while retaining the center channel. Also went with a fixed frame ALR screen so no waves or movement at all. Really great combo. And it can be done in a small space with some ingenuity.

I have a VAVA and not sure how to get around integrating it with the center channel. Do you mind sharing details on how you did it?
@@omarkhan29 it helps to purchase a low profile stand to place the Vava on. Try to get the shortest one you can, and the most shallow in depth. The Vava can be placed very close to the wall. Then put your center speaker in front of the Vava on speaker stands. The key is to get the Vava high enough so the center speaker just clears the bottom of the screen. I hope that helps.

agree, placement is an issue if u have a centre channel speaker or a fully stacked hifi rack...that's why I'm looking at getting a laser long throw projector

I am interested in purchasing this combo (Vava & Vividstorm ALR). My question is if I am interested in having the ALR screen ceiling mounted as well as the Vava UST, does the screen need to be reversed or adjusted during the build to get the same effect as if both units were upright? just trying to conceptualize it.
It wouldn't work because how the ALR screen works by rejecting light from above. If you turn it around, I think you would be staring at the dark rejecting part of the screen instead. Easier just to ceiling mount and project to a white wall or screen.

Hi Joe, thanks for sharing your thoughts. I just got this screen and a UST projector but I haven't received them yet. In your opinion, is the viewing angle when seated on a couch acceptable with the screen placed on the floor, or would you recommend placing it on a console instead?
Depends on your couch height, but I think it's fine on the floor. You might find it's not practical because it's easy to bump though

Which projector stand (table) your using ?
12:26 Right up to this point, I thought we were looking at a standard full bleed screen. That is either the weakest tab tensioning I have seen on a screen, or the material is entirely too thin (or both). I get that they're trying to give you the most real estate possible, but the way tab tension is supposed to work is to add extra stability in locations that have lots of airflow (HVAC or natural convection) by sacrificing some negative space. It's not a miracle cure, but it usually stabilizes the corners well enough that if the screen moves, the whole screen moves gently, not like what's happening here.
Yeah...it sounds like you know way more about this. I just turned the thing on. Maybe some adjustments might fix that. I'm curious. Maybe not. I hope Vividstorm pops in here and comments. I sent them the link to this video.
I've spent the last month with the same combo in my living room.
Also had the ht3550 pair with a 100" so solo pro 2 slate .8 at screen in my basement media room with 5.1.4 being upgraded to 7.1.4. as soon as I get the Denon x6700H it go 13.2 and 7.2.6.
But just swap out my ht3550 with LG new HU70LAB 4k HDR 4ch LED smart Projector with LG web OS and magic remote.
You should look into getting an vividstorm ceiling mounted ALR screen to use with the ht3550. Or a elite screens Aeon cinegrey 3d or 5d fixed screen
Do you think it's worth it for the 3550 in a living room situation? I know ALR works, but you also give up a bit of gain with lights off right?
@@joentell yes it's worth it. But also depends who's alr screen you us. Some have higher gains too.
@@joentell my 1st choice would be elite screen cinegrey 3d material for you with out breaking the bank. You might even be able to get them to send you a review screen.....
How does the lg compare to the ht3550?
Would be interested to see vividstorm make a frame mounted version of this kind of screen, no motors etc, just wall mount. They seem to make good screens, and the price point would be interesting if they skipped the mechanical design.

I have the Xiaomii Miijia 4K Laser UST projector, which is similar, but it's a less than $2000. The only downside is that it comes with a Chinese install of Android, but you can set menus to English for calibration, and just don't use the built-in Android. With a decent ALR screen (mine is a 120" ALR PET from XY-screens) the screen is bright enough to watch in daylight, and convinced me to remove the TV completely.
I won't probably ever buy a UST projector but if Joe took the time to make a video I am going to watch it. Whatever that video is about. I would like a video about that waffle sandwich near the beginning LOL.
I had the Vava, but returned it, due to audio lagging and an error message that kept coming on. No amount of adjusting in the settings on the Vava or on the other components resolved the issue and I never encountered this problem when my components (4K DVD player, Roku Ultra) were previously connected to my 55 inch 4K TV. I also found out that the Vava is NOT TRUE 4K, but uses pixel shifting to get a "4K-Like" image. I would not buy this product again, and will now look into the Optoma Cinemax P2.
Can vava be used without a projector screen?
any 110" -120" ALR screens? it seems the only options are this one and the optima 100", besides screen innovations $4-5,000 screen.

No, not saying that. My goal is to share my experience to help you make the best decision for yourself. There are trade-offs to every product and you need to find the ones that are most appropriate for you. There are certain situations where the Vava is an optimal solution.
Does the screen (Vividstorm) work well with regular throw projectors like the one you have (HT3550) or it has to be UST projector ?
It's meant for UST with the light coming from underneath. It rejects light coming from elsewhere

Wanted the VAVA but worried after reading many complaints about its fan's high-pitch noise. Anyone knows if it is noticeable if you sit 10ft away?
I've been using the VAVA projector for almost 2 years and no is not as bad as others complain, I have it in a small room and fans are not that loud.
Yes I agree. Not that loud. I have other projectors that are louder the moment you turn them on till you turn them off. It's just that with the VAVA, you can hear the fans spin up from low to high when it's on for a while. I got a recent firmware update that addresses the fans. We'll see if it does something different now.
@@joentell can you follow up on this please? Fan noise and noise in general is a big thing to consider when buying.
Also, my cat can't be in the same room with an ultra short throw projector, he will be all over it and most probably sit/lay/sleep on it because it's nice and warm
Well at least yours didnt come with the high pitch ringing noise. Loved the projector but high pitch ringing was a deal breaker. I think these products are aimed at someone like myself. Our living room is very "designer" and having speakers/giant tv with all the associated gear would look out of place. With the VAVA its pretty awesome that I can have this box sitting almost invisible in the room and pop into a film with good sound. No additional gear, wires, cables needed! The other thing is VAVA needs to get rid of that terrible Aptiode app store, it was less than useless.
I get you about the use-case. I still would opt for a $49 Chromecast with Google TV. Much better experience.
How far is your ac from the screen?

Joe N Tell - I’ve seen enough videos over the years to know that most of your audience will not sit through a 17 minute video of a guy rambling. You need to be more concise. TH-cam provides stats for its content creators that further proves this. I could care less about being a content creator. Rewatch your video man....I got through 5 mins of it and switched over to another one.
