The Red Scorpions are an awesome looking chapter. The posterboys of Forge World always looked good. I miss those campaign books. They were absolutely packed with lore and handy colour plates. Perhaps one day they can make their return.
Probably not. The digital artists that work for GW nowadays definitely aren't as concentrated with a unique style like the artists that were prominent during the 'Grim Dark' era of 3rd edition 40K. I think the main issue is due to the fact GW would rather contract said digital artists globally rather than have them as permanent employees around each other at Nottingham so that a style can be properly established to transition across the entire 40K universe again. 99% of the books and art nowadays looks far too high fantasy and clean. Even all of the Chaos artwork looks far too clean and colourful. It's kinda corny.
I've been watching your videos for a while now and thoroughly enjoy the relaxed atmosphere you enable. I'm a disabled veteran with cancer and unfortunately have suffered some neurological damage from the chemo, my therapist and physio recommended I find a hobby that would help with the cognitive and concentration side of things and something that would help with the neuropathy in my hands. I've been a long time fan of GW since I was a boy, I'm 57 now, alots changed in the years. I've always felt it quite daunting with the standards of painting that some of the content creators have, at first when I saw your work I felt the same but due to the atmosphere you create and how you explain your techniques you have helped me to gain confidence and start painting. I'm getting loads of benefits by painting, I'm able to concentrate more and work around the numbness in my hands. I tend to paint a mini and once finished I strip the paint back and use a different technique I've seen you demonstrate, this is purely a "cost of the model" situation as we're a one wage family, the models and paints are expensive so I have to make do. Thank you for your excellent guides and all the work you do for this great community.

5:22 The culprit in the AK paints is most likely the matting agent. You could try adding something like satin medium/varnish to make them flow better or even gloss if you it's not the final finish anyway.

I've been looking for a stand-out grey for my homebrew Salamander's successor chapter, and when I saw the thumbnail of this video I was like that's it. Definitely going to try this method out.

Doing my leviathan and some of my left over heresy stuff as Red Scorpions (had to go to etsy for the decals) and boy howdy does the way you do your yellow look great, going to have to try that as Averland sunset was just too dull and thick, but this nazdreg and zandri dust sound handy.
Great tutorial. I've started a Badab Kill Team project and I think I'll add the Red Scorpions to this. As for decals, Forgotten Chapters on Etsy have Red Scorpion decals, as well as many others.
I also have had this problem with enamel washes. I used the same one one my blood angels. It just dried light grey like a dust deposit. I like enamels as they don’t need the mixing that oils do and are more consistent. But I think I need to use paynes grey.

A great looking subtle paintjob, i agree that the brown filter really took the model to the next level. If i had a nitpick i would say the cuff of the assault cannon looks a bit odd as the paint is drawing attention to the limitations of the sculpt with it's flat infill on the sleeve that should (presumably, i haven't seen a real terminator) be recessed. For your lore question i believe the Crux Terminatus symbol is also known as simply 'Terminator Honours', basically that marine has the right to wear Terminator Armour but might not always be wearing it. It's why the symbol used to be an option/detail for many power armour kits (usually shoulder pad) for you to denote veterancy within your ranks as it was literally an upgrade to give your guy an extra attack on his profile. It is also just the generic terminator symbol, being a slightly more ornate version of the Templar-style cross that denotes a company/chapter veteran.
@@cultofpaint I believe the Shoulder does indeed contain some dust (and more importantly some kind of supplemental shield generator, don't tell the Chaplain) but it is technically just an Armorial as the Terminator Honours doesn't give you a 5 up Invuln. haha.
I'd love to see your take on army painting a Blood Ravens scheme. Dawn Of War (well, Dark Crusade) was my entry point to the hobby. I've tried schemes using Khorne Red, Mephiston Red or Blood Angels Red Contrast over a preshade, but none have really landed quite right to me.
The white stains the enamel wash created look like frosting. This occurs when the difference in finish between the underlying layer (gloss varnish) is to big of a jump to the overlaying layer (the matt panel liner). Kimera has a very insightful video on the subject called "The truth about unwanted FROSTING or CHALKY painted miniatures!". Ignore the clickbaity title, the video itself is great.
Hello, When you do these Enamel washes in the recesses and for the streaks, you have already used the Polyurethane Varnish to lock-in your prior work (and always do this to protect your acrylics), correct? For these recess washes, is it around a 50/50 mix of mineral spirits to enamel? Thanks for your time, Philip
Hi Philip, the only reason to varnish before is to help the washes run into the recesses. So long as your acrylic paint layer is dry then you don't need to protect it from the oil/enamel/white spirit. The ratio for the mixes changes each time depending on what you want to do with them, but 50/50 is a good staring point.
Just watched your basing video, and you're using a different much lighter texture paint on this Terminator than any of the bases in that other video. You remember what paste you have on this? I really like how light the base comes out on this, and want to replicate it.

Great video, were the Red Scorpions on Vraks as well? I seem to remember they redeemed the honour of the Astartes somewhat, after the Dark Angels' - ahem - contribution. The colour plates in those Imperial Armour books are just divine! It's pretty much the only reason I'll keep Warhammer Plus on, as they're all in the Vault now.
Quick question, did you run that thin brown wash over the yellow sections too? Also was that chainfist the whole cataphractii arm with a modern terminator shoulder guard, or did you snip the chain bit off and put on the fist?

What's the upside of washing with the dark grey enamal wash rather than with oils here? Wouldn't that get around the frosting/lighter effect you mention?

Its a pretty subjective term, but here's my interpretation. Speed painting is "get it coloured in quick and playing games", you're happy to compromise on many details for expediency. Army Painting is how I would paint a gaming army, something i'd like to look good on the shelf as well, be nominated for best painted at events with, and involve a painting process that was enjoyable as well as efficient. Hope that makes sense!

Should I try to make Skavenblight Dinge translucent and try to filter it or do you have maybe diferent idea? My problem is that AK paint covered to much and acted more like layer that just slight highlight :(
You could absolutely knock it back with thinned down skavenblight, that's what I would do. I find airbrushing is often and backwards and forwards approach.

Hey Henry, Got a question for you. What white spirit brand do you use in your panel lining mix? Great work as always.
Normally Sansodor. By Winsot and newton. But often for filming I use generic DIY store white spirit. It dries quicker.

Yes i did. Although the main reason was to help knock the decal back rather than change the yellow.
The little chain bitnis a separate part. You can glue it on powerfists to make chainfists

No upside, i just like the look of enamels. And the frosting is easily dealt with like in the vid. Oils would work great.

Are you able to explain to me the difference between "army painting" and "speed painting"? New to the hobby and don't know all the lingo yet!

I’ve tried this paint scheme and the reddish grey seems to come out more brown/tan than grey on the SD. Any ideas?
there's a brown filter wash later that changes it a bit, have you taken a mini through to completion?
yellow is a little too desaturated, maybe averland sunset would have made it stand out slightly more, overall its quite a muted scheme
