@@TheFeralPainterGreat video! I was looking for a color scheme of this type. I'm sorry I didn't come across it sooner. Do you have a suggestion as to what color could replace Volupus pink, (maybe from the Army painter line) because I literally can't find it anywhere. Thanks!
Just remembered another little effects trick from many, many years ago, that helps achieve a nice, lifelike but creepy sheen to carapace like you see on beetles, that would really enhance either Tyranids or the new minis from the Aliens game that's come out. If you mix black and blue Quink writing ink together, (DON'T thin it down, or you lose the cohesion and it takes days to dry, and then looks streaky. Talking from experience here, believe me 🙂), and apply it to carapace armour with a fine/detail brush, and let it dry naturally, you get a gorgeous black/blue rainbow effect that not only settles in the ridges, but shines beautifully on the flatter surfaces, and can be very gently dry-brushed over once totally dry, to highlight any edging areas. I learned this by accident way back in the late 1980's, when I was painting a beetle as part of a large mini's base, and the end result blew my mind. Even after matte varnishing, the sheen stays vivid, and when the light hits it, the effect looks awesome and very realistic. I'd forgotten about this technique until I re-watched your video again today, and saw just how it could be used to make the carapace stand out on the Tyranid minis (Or on the new Aliens minis that I've been asked to paint, so I'll apply it to them, too). Again, thanks for posting your truly amazing videos, and even more for jump-starting my memory of techniques I'd almost forgotten about until now (I've been in the hobby since 1972, so have forgotten a LOT, but am still learning more every day), and can share with you and your viewers.
Thats black ink and blue quink writing ink not black acrylic paint and blue quink writing in right? This tip sounds amazing and I think I might try this on a dark ethereal space marine army made to look like they were pulled from the darkness of space
Yes it's the writing inks, not the artist inks. I tried artist inks, but just got a rather yucky dark blue instead of the effect mixing the writing inks gives. Good luck with the marines 🙂
I just got into 40k (my friends got me Tyranids.) I have never painted any kind of mini before. I have been following your grimdark series since they look so good. Your instruction on how to paint is outstanding, especially coming from a true rookie painter. They definitely are not nearly as good as yours, but I am very happy with how they turned out so far. Thank you for doing this without a airbrush, so many videos nowadays require a airbrush, lovely to see this one! And I’ll definitely be giving this a go!
Hey! I just wanted to comment and say that I followed your video super closely, and oh my god the Goon’s Grime wash is an absolute game changer! Thanks so much for making this, without it I dont think I would’ve made anything nearly as gross and realistic as this. Now I can look at my models with pride haha! Much love, killer stuff man.
It IS better than GW. I have always hated the cartoonish ‘Eavy Metal painting both because it is difficult and time consuming but also because it looks so flat. Thank you and all of the other Grimdark painters that have inspired me to attempt this style. I love it!

I love the way you paint Tyranids. They feel alive and attractively terrifying. Without a doubt, this is the best combination. Thanks for your content!
It's hard, especially for new painters, to get away from the game's workshop style and recipe. There's nothing wrong with this, and I think a lot of people pick their armies based on the gw examples and end up creating their own take on the style. What I like about this is it is a great example of someone doing exactly that. Taking the models and painting them like the gw example but in their own style and take, which I think is what many people want to do.
Bro, these are so so sick. I'm just thinking about making a start on the 'nids I've got and this is pretty much the best trade off between time and result I think I've seen yet. Stoked on this man. Will absolutely be using your skin recipe and maybe switch it up with colours for the carapaces. Thanks my dude for another quality video 🤘
One trick I learned many years ago for stippling using an airbrush and a paint brush combined, to get some seriously nice stippling effects on saurian/alien skin is this: get a flat brush, apply some paint to the tip, and, using just an empty airbrush, spray air through the airbrush toward the paint brush, which you hold near the model, and the air blows little specks of paint over the areas you aim for. You can use this technique for doing lizard style stripes on dinosaur models, for getting some very nice mottling on alien skin, Nurgle flesh and even use it to help weather space marine minis and even armoured vehicles that you want to make more Grimdark. I haven't used an airbrush in many years, but am slowly turning toward getting back into using one, and seeing how you did the mottling on the Tyranid model brought back the memory of how I was taught to do it so long ago. Hope this tip comes in handy, and some of you give it a try, and it works out to be fun and informative for your hobby 🙂 LOVE this video, as I'm thinking of painting a Tyranid force for a side project, and seeing how you painted this mini so dark and truly scary has inspired me even more.
Just another little tip for getting the stippling effect if you don't have an airbrush to blow air at the loaded brush. Computer shops sell cans of compressed air for cleaning keyboards, and if you aim one of these at a paint brush (A flat one works best) loaded with either paint or ink, and just give it a short blast (Use the thin tube they provide with the can, inserted into the nozzle tip, for a much better, controlled effect) you get a decent spatter/stippling effect on your mini. Do this in small stages, and the end result is similar to using an airbrush to do the job. Bear in mind, the air pressure does drop steeply as the can empties, but for small to medium size minis, they are a nice, cheap alternative to an airbrush. I tried this technique before posting this comment, so I'd be able to explain how to do it. The cans come with a tube to insert into the trigger nozzle on the can, so you get a nice little bit of tubing for your bits box after the can's empty, too, so even that is a nice little bonus. Hope this helps someone looking to find ana alternate to having to buy an airbrush set-up just to do some extra details to their minis.
This is the greatest paint job I’ve ever seen of a model (I’m very new to warhammer but something gonna have a hard time beating this) I’m def doing this for my army
Great video! Definitely going to use this colour scheme for my tyranids. But i have some questions: 1. Do you think i can swap out the streaking grime for agrax earthshade ( maybe watered down so only recesses dark like streaking grime would) and use bugmans glow paint with a wraithbone zenithal instead of trench paint? 2. Will this technique in this video work on other bigger tyranids? Thank you!
U could use agrax but probably wont achieve same results. Also use steel legion drab (its a colour match to trench brown) And yes would work on larger models
That first technique would work on almost any grimdark flesh but especially chaos, will give it a go for sure, also picking up some goons grime soon so I'm excited to try that out!
I did this backwards. I tend to jump all over the place when painting so I ended up with a pretty solidly detailed skintone after going through Lupercal green/naggaroth night with a contrast of magos purple before going over it with vallejo leather brown. While the carapace was mostly red tinted with yellow, white, abaddon black and nuln oil brightened by kislev flesh admittedly I am pretty new to painting mini's the hardest part was probably putting them together. Coming up with the idea on what I wanted to paint my hive fleet is probably the hardest especially considering I wanted them to be like a mushroom this really helped me figure out if I was in the right direction especially considering how sloppy some of my painting can be. Thanks a bunch mate!
I've been hunting a cool, simple Tyranid scheme that has some good brightness to it but nothing too crazy. I might just use something like - the slick coat effect you've achieved looks amazing!
Just started collecting combat patrol magazine for the space marine 2 game coming out! Going to mainly get the armies in the game, love this tutorial I’m going to try it. The game is unbelievable btw!
The speckling / mottling for skin pigments was gold! IVe got to find the right brush and technique / feel for this, but I’ll do it sometime. Thanks man and cheers!! I dunno how to support you other than subscribing - which I already did. And the villainy ink thing sounds interesting too, especially if they’re less toxic. For me, I use water based oil colors for everything, they’re less smelly aswell as their thinner. Kudos man and keep it up! Marvelous technique and walkthrough!!
For such a simple and quick army painting method, it really looks worthy of being a competition piece and with extra time spent can be made to look even better. Awesome video. 👍
Those look amazing. I think I'll get some Tyranid models and see if I can replicate what you have done here. I have all of the paints you used, which is super convenient. Thanks for sharing!!
def frightening and beautiful. But one has to appreciate the value of the brighter schemes as well since they look wonderful on the table. But yes, close up, this blows those out of the water.
Another great tutorial! You really shouldn’t feel the need to repeat all the caveats about the extra steps, they are brilliantly simple and add a lot to the overall scheme. 👍👏
@TheFeralPainter thank you. Did my first model, a Von Ryan Leaper and pretty happy with the results. Can see how GG has worked to add depth and realism to the model. It doesn't look as good as the one in this video, but as a first attempt using this type of ink, I'm very happy ! Thanks for the video, it's genuinely helped a lot choose a direction for my Nids, and teach me hwo to approach painting in a manner I haven't thought of before 🤘
Well now look what you've done. I went and joined the channel and it looks like I'm going to have to go and try out some enamels, too. Paint for the paint god! Really cool nids btw!🤘
Just wanted to say thank you for sharing. Currently working through the tyranids termagants from the ultimate starter set. I am new to the hobby and loving it so far. They are looking great. Almost at the streaking grime stage - do you use white spirit to dab the enamel away once it’s dried ?
I have order EVERYTHING I need for this build, hormagaunts, everything, but one. The trench brown primer. I live in the US and it seems impossible to get over here. I tried looking at the alternative method you showed Venom Wyrm, but it looked more forest green than the light brownish tan shown on the model. I’ve even tried using Colour Forges conversion chart to find other alternatives but none of them seemed to be primers or sprays. I’m at a loss I don’t want to use rustoleom
In the exact same spot but I figured it out today - Vallejo English Uniform Spray Primer. Apparently Trench Brown = Steel Legion Drab = English Uniform
Great tutorial ! Thank you ! I tried the same schema, and the shell looks more violet than blue like in your video. Where is the truth ? 😄 Is it your video processing that make this effect ? For those who are looking for similar to Trench Brown, I think US-Khaki from Vallejo is the good one. I tried the English Uniform and I think it's a little too dark. US-Khaki is lighter.
very nice, love the Grimdark style. Could you possibly do a Drukhari mini in this style ? Organic flesh/armor vs Artificial armor painting can be different, would be nice to see differences.
Awsome video. Seems like a combination between traditionsl painting and inks do get an awsome. A coffee for awsome video incoming. Do you varnish them after?
Can you explain the part where you first dry brushing the skin. How did you prevent the unwanted chalkiness? I couldn't really understand what you mentioned in the video for that part. Your video really inspires me and I will paint my army using your video as a reference. Thank you very much.
Hay man! Sure i always reccomend typing in artis opus drybrushing. (U dont need there brushes but they arw great!) This teaches u how to keep moisture in the bristles
Do you have any photos of units on the table to share, the scheme is quite dark across both the model and the basing and for an army scheme i feel like it will be a little indiscernable on the tabletop? Maybe a spot colour to make them pop or taking the top highlights on the chitin higher will make them mroe readable.
This is a fantastic video, I'm new and I have watched lots of videos. This video makes me feel like it's actually doable, and I should just give it a go ! Definitely getting a sub for sure!
Gotta tell ya that gaunt looks great. I'll definitely apply some grim dark techniques from my own perspective to my orks. Do you have any videos painting those?
Awesome work! I just bought the introductory set and want a darker style army so this is PERFECT! Quick question, do you thin down the paint with water when u paint the claws or just straight from det bottle? And the same with the carapace? I cant get the trench brown where i live, do you know any other simular solution maybe? Love your vids btw!
@@TheFeralPainterthx for replaying so fast! Do you think i can use Citidel’s steel legion drab paint instead of using trench brown? And maybe thin coats to make it work
you said that before you painted the miniture with goons grime you thinned it down with minerals. could you elaborate what that means for someone whos not a native english speaker ? im quite confused
I am having trouble finding Colour Forge rattle cans in the USA, and Venom Wyrm seems to only be in droppers, is there an alternative spray color you would recommend?
@@TheFeralPainterunfortunately that dosnt seem to come in a spray for an even undercoat like that. I’m going to test with the brush on overtop the wrath bone spray and see how it works.
I don't need nids... I don't need nids. No seriously i really don't need nids... I already have 27 black templars ( 10 finished ) and just got terminators to add to them. Seeing this makes me want to paint up some nids. Looks great dude
The first step should probably be to clean up the model and scrape mould lines. Paint jobs look great but having the mould lines down the arms really detracts from the overall finish.
Because the acrylic paint has fully dried. And i only use very small ammount of spirits, with gentle tapping and dabbing. ☺️ You can varnish before applying the enamels however its not necessary

One of the funnest armies to paint for me as there’s so many different models. So much you can do with them in terms of schemes as well! I’ve done grim dark for years and it makes the tyranids look incredible. Can’t recommend enough. The newer models (minus the barbgaubnts) are so fun to paint as well.
Painting tyranids like this turns them from Saturday morning cartoon character to horror movie terrors.

I’ve even tried using Colour Forges conversion chart to find other alternatives but none of them seemed to be primers or sprays. I’m at a loss I don’t want to use rustoleom
Yea that works buddy! Enjoy!
In the exact same spot but I figured it out today - Vallejo English Uniform Spray Primer.
Apparently Trench Brown = Steel Legion Drab = English Uniform
@ No waaaayyyy! Have you tried it? I ended up finding this other color that was close but a little more yellow.
Great tutorial ! Thank you !
I tried the same schema, and the shell looks more violet than blue like in your video. Where is the truth ? 😄
Is it your video processing that make this effect ?
For those who are looking for similar to Trench Brown, I think US-Khaki from Vallejo is the good one. I tried the English Uniform and I think it's a little too dark. US-Khaki is lighter.
Nope mate no hiding or changing tones here. Not sure were youve gone wrong
@TheFeralPainter naggaroth night is a dark purple no ?
very nice, love the Grimdark style. Could you possibly do a Drukhari mini in this style ? Organic flesh/armor vs Artificial armor painting can be different, would be nice to see differences.
U can try any 👌🏻
Awsome video. Seems like a combination between traditionsl painting and inks do get an awsome. A coffee for awsome video incoming.
Do you varnish them after?
Thank you! Cheers!
(U dont need there brushes but they arw great!)
This teaches u how to keep moisture in the bristles
@@TheFeralPainter Thank you very much.
Really aprreciate it!
Do you have any photos of units on the table to share, the scheme is quite dark across both the model and the basing and for an army scheme i feel like it will be a little indiscernable on the tabletop? Maybe a spot colour to make them pop or taking the top highlights on the chitin higher will make them mroe readable.
I dont play. So no. Feel free to add your own colour 👌🏻
This is a fantastic video, I'm new and I have watched lots of videos. This video makes me feel like it's actually doable, and I should just give it a go ! Definitely getting a sub for sure!
Welcome aboard!
I want to do something like this, but with a more greenish look, want to remind of xenomorphs, but withour being just black and green
Do it 👌🏻👌🏻 thanks for kind words
4:00 tbh that there looks great already with the white armour
Do you airbrush normal Army Painter Venom Wyrm as primer? I can't find a rattlecan primer. Would Death Guard Green From Citadel give the same effect?
Yes it would 👌🏻👌🏻
Instead of using trench Brown primer, could you use something like vallejo dessert yellow or Will that be too bright in color? Any sugestions maybe?
You could. It might alter the tone slightly but not much. U can also use vallejo israli sand primer. Its the same
@@TheFeralPainter i cant seem to find it in spray Can and i dont have an airbrush - but thx!
Really makes me want to play Nids.
They're so amazing to paint. Damn they are fun.
Gotta tell ya that gaunt looks great. I'll definitely apply some grim dark techniques from my own perspective to my orks. Do you have any videos painting those?
Yes check out my videos
Awesome work! I just bought the introductory set and want a darker style army so this is PERFECT! Quick question, do you thin down the paint with water when u paint the claws or just straight from det bottle? And the same with the carapace?
I cant get the trench brown where i live, do you know any other simular solution maybe?
Love your vids btw!
Just thinned slightly 👌🏻👌🏻 enjoy bro
@@TheFeralPainterthx for replaying so fast! Do you think i can use Citidel’s steel legion drab paint instead of using trench brown? And maybe thin coats to make it work
Yep that would work as its a colour match ☺️
Awesome video as always. For those Villany inks. Why would you recommend them over oil washes? Cheers
Multiple reasons, but you can use oils also. No problem there. I just prefer the villainy inks for there ease of use and drying times
you said that before you painted the miniture with goons grime you thinned it down with minerals. could you elaborate what that means for someone whos not a native english speaker ? im quite confused
Mineral spirts or white spirits. Its completely different to water.
Very nice! What Color do you use to highlight the naggaroth night?
Mix in some genestealer purple
Do you or anyone else know a good alternative for the trench brown that isn't Colour Forge? I live in the US and Colour Forge doesn't ship to me.
Go on there site they have all the alternatives colour matched from other companies 👌🏻👌🏻
Thank you! Your videos are fantastic, and i very much look forward to painting my tyranids the grim dark way
Good work. Looks great
Thank you! Cheers!
When you cotton bud the excess goon grime off, do you use anything on the cotton bud or is it dry?
Mineral spirits
Please do some Krieg or Imperial Guard! Especially with the Krieg release coming this Christmas!
😜
If we add those extra steps... When you color crimson the segments. Do you still drybrush after that? Thanks 🙏
Yes u can do once dry
just want to throw this out there for some Canadians who might have a hard time getting the UHU glue, E6000 works just the same
Thanks for sharing ill keep this in mind
❤
Mannnnn! Mad mad love! Thanks so much
No Problem mate ❤ i appriciate your work.
Could you answer on my other question in the other comment? Ty
Which comment was that sorry? Im still trying to find it? U can ready out on instagram too if u have it
I am having trouble finding Colour Forge rattle cans in the USA, and Venom Wyrm seems to only be in droppers, is there an alternative spray color you would recommend?
Mmm search colour matches for them. It’s basically steel legion drab from gw
@@TheFeralPainterunfortunately that dosnt seem to come in a spray for an even undercoat like that.
I’m going to test with the brush on overtop the wrath bone spray and see how it works.
Sure. Make sure u prime. Do some looking about thow. Im sure there will be something similar
Good sir, fantastic job. Question, which company did you mention for your base scenics? I checked your links and comments and couldnt find it
This is kraut cover. However other companies sell all
Sorts x
Could you recommend paints to do a similarly grindark behemoth paint scheme?
Im not sure what that is buddy. I just go for paints that are similar or ones i like ☺️ check out some of my other tyranid vids. U might like 👌🏻👌🏻 x
The red/black/blue scheme from an older rulebook cover - No worries, I've watched the other vids and can experiment
You inspired me to try this technique on my behemoth hive fleet
Awesome man hope it helped
I don't need nids... I don't need nids. No seriously i really don't need nids... I already have 27 black templars ( 10 finished ) and just got terminators to add to them. Seeing this makes me want to paint up some nids. Looks great dude
Thanks man…..get nids 😂
What other colors could I use for the Trench brown? I'm in the us and I'm looking for an army painter or citadel equivalent
Sure man. They have a chart online with all comparisons on its a match to steel legion drab
@@TheFeralPainter Thank you!
These are amazing, this is how I picture nids in my mind. Is there any chance you could do a grimdark grey knights at some point?
Absolutely
The first step should probably be to clean up the model and scrape mould lines. Paint jobs look great but having the mould lines down the arms really detracts from the overall finish.
😉
how does the mineral spirits not wreak the paint ???
Because the acrylic paint has fully dried. And i only use very small ammount of spirits, with gentle tapping and dabbing. ☺️
You can varnish before applying the enamels however its not necessary
@@TheFeralPainter mate your nids are the best I have seen . i am new to the hobbie and just not happy with the colours I have so far just cant get the skin right washes go to dark or pool to much I should not of gone a horde army from the jump lol
Any plans for some AoS content when it launches? Love to see your take on some grimdark Stormcast.
Absolutely!! Cannot wait
@@TheFeralPainter Love to hear it! Amazing work as always!
Hi mate have u got a link for that stuff u used on that base ! ?
Cheers
Also top work
Its kraut cover i just searched on youtube
PLEASE paint a Carnifex in this style!
Hi thanks for the comment. Its not something i would do for youtube as painting it the same would basically be the same video.
However i do have so more nids coming soon 👌🏻👌🏻
This looks really damn cool. Can you also show how to make grimdark grey knights?
please :)
I will one day
in Which color did you paint the tongue ? maybe i missed that part
Use any redish burgundy
@@TheFeralPainter Do you have any ideas if i want to paint my neurotyrant in this style which colors i should choose for the brain ? ive watched your video but the styles dont reeeeally match in my opinion (it still looks suuuuper sick)
Where can I find this Voluptuous pink?
Citadel any store
Dear Friend,
You add what to the grime? I sadly dont understand it. i need to thin it down or what? Would be Great to get an answer. Because i ordered it and i am afraid to fail. Ty ❤
Hay man. Head over to thr grimdark
Compendium youtube. Check out there latest video and there they explain everything in major detail, about the grime ☺️☺️☺️ u need some oderless mineral spirits. These are different to acrylics so please check there video out ☺️☺️
Enamels have a solvent base, so are very different to acrylics but awesome to
Use 👌🏻👌🏻
Thank you for your quick answer friend i appriciate it! ❤
So i watched a video and to sum up: After i used the grime with my Brush on the miniature i need to clean it on the edges with White spirit from AK for example? And then let it dry?
@@TheFeralPainter how much i have to thin the grime down with the Spirit? 😊
@@Exi1209 hay man did u check the last video out before the darkangel one i made? The grimdark compendium explain all dilutions on there page. They also have a resource page that u will find helpfull x
@@TheFeralPainter hey man to be honest i dont find it and the other Video you recommended me there ist to much Talking. My english isnt that good to unterstand all which was Said. Sry 😨.
I thought you may Write me quick a few points so I can copy Paste them without repeating the Video 10times without understanding the Point.
Love your Work man ♥️
Is there a trench brown (colour forge) variant from citadel colors?
Yes steel legion drab
Do you varnish before using the enamel wash? If you do; how many layers and what type of varnish?
Hi, no i dont. However you could if u wanted to. However there is no need to for this
I live in the US and the trench brown spray cant be delivered here yet, is there an alternative?
@@CursedCookingDBB sure is. If u check out there comparrisons on there site army painter and citadel have a colour match. Its basically steel legion drab
@@TheFeralPainter I greatly appreciate it thank you
@@CursedCookingDBB n e time brother
Would love to try this paint scheme but colour forge isn't available outside of the UK. Do you have any close alternative to recommend?
Citadel ones are fine
@@TheFeralPainter sorry, what I meant is what colour would you use to replace trench brown, Citadel doesn't seem to have a spray close to it
That grime is too good. I will see if I can get that goon stuff
Yourl love it
Holy it looks so nice
But I rly wonder why ur brown looks so much lighter cuz i am using the sameone and it looks way darker 😢
Mmm this could be from washes or painting black before
@TheFeralPainter thx for the replie :) ! That could it be cuz I primed them black before I saw ur vid sadly maybe I'll try 2 times of drybrush the skinn tone
Do you happen to have affiliate links for Krautcover? I *hate* basing, I find it so unbelievably boring and by the time I get to it I'm just ready to be working on the next project and instead I've got this base to deal with, so watching you just dunk that little guy in there and come out, base completed and looking good I know I have to get some.
I dont unfortunately but hopefully soon. I do have a firestorm games affiliate in my links. U can get kraut from there
I really liked the skin before the grime was applied.
As mentioned u can choose weather to leave or add 👌🏻
Same. I follow all his vids, minus the grime.
In all my years I have never considered 'nids but, I feel as if I should steal a few plastic ones to try. Great ideas 👍
Go for it!
👌🏻
@@jackbell7852 Noted, I think I know a man who has some spare.
Even if he doesn't know it yet :)
These are epic thanks for the guide
Glad you like them!
I’m very new to Warhammer, and just as a clarification should I add the veins before, or after I paint the skin?
Either is fine
Are mineral spirits always better then water to thin paints? And i've been wondering do you have any plans for a grimdark kreig video?
No mieral spirits are only for solvent based paint. Never use it on acrylics, only water for acylics
I'd like to see these against a white background, where the subtleties of the colour would be more visible.
Its not something i do sorry.
good vid, deserves more attention
Thanks man means alot
Can you paint up some grimdark gsc please!
Hopefully soon
These look amazing 😮
Thanks man
You said in the video trench brown or venom wrym, but venom wrym looks very green. Is it correct? Just curious. But thanks for the amazing video!
No there all a match of steel legion drab
