    The “whoosh” meme translates to someone messing up a punchline or some other aspect of a joke.
    Whoosh: “It’s not my fault I’m too incompetent to deliver a punchline!”

    The fundamental problem of "trolls" is that, almost by definition, they win. A proper troll's one and only goal is to get a reaction, ANY reaction.
    Most people make the mistake of trying to somehow "beat" the troll and become emotionally invested in winning. You've already lost.
    The correct response is to realise that you've "lost" the moment you read the words that irked you, and then move on. Or try and figure out why they irked you, and mentally reposition such that they won't annoy you again.
    The fight isn't against the troll that annoyed you. It's against the mindset that allowed you to become annoyed by some monkey on a typewriter.

    I used to be bullied a lot at school, and I did exactly what you mentioned, and attmpted to ignore them. This only provoked them further as they didnt have a sense of decency, singling me out as the quiet freak to be laughed at. I believe that while consequences aren't immediately visible they will reciprocate on way or another. That gave me something to use against the bullies as I reminded myself of the positive things in my life that they didn't gave in theirs, namely a good education.

    It feels better to get a comment loved by a creator you respect than getting a reply calling you out for being a twat. It might be easier to get attention by being a dick but by being clever or nice or just qouting a joke someone else made in the video you can get a lot also.
    *TL;DR:* It feels better to get noticed for something good than something bad.

    • @Jessie_Helms
      @Jessie_Helms 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Though it’s better (at least for the individual getting the attention) to be noticed for bad than not at all.
      But loneliness and attention aren’t the only reason we have trolls. Some people flat out want to be mean, they get a kick out of seeing people squirm.
      I used to troll all the time, but now I’ve matured and just stick to horribly dry sad jokes lol.

    Your content is perfect to make somebody think about their life, and how they can improve it if necessary. Direct them in the right path if previously wrong.

    Keep it up, Philip!

      Not exactly. It would violate freedom of speech if kliksphilip prevented these people from saying their nonsense anywhere on the internet. But deleting comments on content that you control is more like asking someone to leave your house if they start shitting everywhere.
      I recognise that there's a lot of people who would see any type of comment deleting as problematic, as it's a type of censured speech. While subjective, I think most rational people can easily tell when a comment is just there to provoke.

    • @Craxxet

    I love this, I always ask people why they troll or bait people into arguments. It's because they crave attention that they don't know how to get any other way. I really pity people who think trolling is funny because they are building their personality around making other people distressed for their own enjoyment. Their friendships will be shallow and their relationships with my unhealthy or nonexistent

    Bullies and trolls will never go away.
    Funny how the Bible is relevant on the internet, cause it says if you try to correct a fool or fight a mocker (which could easily be considered a troll) you’re gonna at best waste your time and at worst you look worse.
    Of course, that’s not a direct quote from anywhere, but it’s a medium level theme in 2 or 3 of the books.

    This is a very real Internet philosophy topic that I never imagined people talked about. Your points are perfectly spot on but in the end it doesn't matter because this will always exist. It happens everywhere like imagined if someone did it right now. In reality if some one did that knowingly as a joke on this video, that just actually literally makes the problem worse and trying to explain so opens them to this very trap.

    Posting for approval?
    That's what reddit is all about. It's a terrible forum for any actual original content. I'd wager it's likely in the 1/10000 posts that's actually worth laying an eye on on that site. I don't really see why this is a complaint. I wouldn't go to bodybuilding forums and say some fitness appreciation thread is 'shallow'. That's the point.
    I strongly believe that the mythical application of the upvote system to be for 'quality of post' is just that, a myth.

    • @0xCAFEF00D
      @0xCAFEF00D 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Woosh.
      Or more accurately; you seem to have missed the point.
      This is exactly what you get on reddit. People who seek approval. People who craft comments to fit the masses, consciously or not. I didn't say that that's not what you get. I'm saying that 1klikphilip is getting exactly what he bargains for on that subreddit as with any other.

    • @MDPToaster
      @MDPToaster 6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      hihtitmamnan
      No, the post that gets the most likes is just the post everyone agrees with.
      Try applying your logic to a Flat-Earth page and see how many upvotes you get when to start posting the Earth is round, then compare it to posts that say the Earth is Flat.
      Reddit is all about social bubbles that ostracize anyone that doesn’t belong in that bubble.

    • @hihtitmamnan
      @hihtitmamnan 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @SacredKos
      @SacredKos 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @MDP_Toaster
      I mean, when you think about it, social bubbles are just society in general. It's just that on the internet it's very easy to go to one particular forum or site that supports your views and opinions without any overlap from other people's "bubbles" who could critique them and actually engage in conversations, arguments. Real life just has a lot more bubbles and it's harder to close yourself off to just one in particular. Not sure what my point here is though, or if there even is any.

    • @MDPToaster
      @MDPToaster 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      SacredChaos
      I guess you’re point could be along the lines of “social media sites mimic the thought segregation of reality, but to a higher extreme.”
      Which is both good and bad at the same time.

    The thing about the Arnold comment is that I can only see it as cowardly (Arnold's comment that is). Using both adherence to common sentiment and his celebrity status to appear as though his argument held any weight.
    He starts off with an appeal to emotion and to popularity, as well as ad hominem by calling him stupid and evil (in the assumption that the reader already agrees with him, and then continues to use nothing but those arguments for the entire rest of his worthless post. More appeals to emotion with the uplifting of the special athletes, and more ad hominem against his opponent, with a couple completely useless "gotcha" lines that in reality don't mean anything. Only someone who absolutely does not understand the arguments at play would consider Arnold's comment anything but playground taunts.
    In essence what Arnold said was "You disagreed with me, so therefore you're dumb and a bad guy. These other guys are good and much better than you, and I will again state that you are stupid and bad, so you can be like these good people, or you can be stupid and bad forever, GOTCHA!"
    When you boil down the structure of the comment like this it's pretty easy to see how poor of an argument it really was, and whenever I see people posting things like "Wow Arnold really showed that dude good" all I can do is shake my head in disappointment.
    Honestly the first poster had a much better idea going on, a very valid question that challenges the assumptions of the day. Why are there Special Olympics? The actual Olympics are about competition and pushing the limits of human achievement, although they do inevitably just become a circle jerk of people blindly supporting their country over all others. The Special Olympics could be argued that it's "a symbolic event showing people overcoming their disadvantages as an inspiration to all!" but I'd argue that they're more in the vein of the Edgar Allen Poe short story "Hop Frog" where we view crippled people competeting for our amusement. A "Oh his legs don't work but look at how hard he's trying" sort of event, with people supporting it only to further their own social capital "Look at me, I support the special Olympics where all the people you're supposed to feel bad about compete, I am such a pillar of noble virtue, please watch me jack myself off over how good I am". When viewed in this lens (and indeed all lenses do have some value) the whole event loses its saccharine coating and becomes yet another formality for people to justify their holier than thou attitudes and look away from self improvement. Which is the exact inverse of what Arnold was arguing in the first place.
    Thanks to anyone who's read thus far, this comment is mostly a way to get all my feelings out of the way.
    Tl;Dr: Arnold's comment was cowardly and didn't challenge convention at all, and is thus worth nothing, anyone who thinks it's good is just agreeing with him because he's famous.

      Da_maul I'm just here to say that you don't know what an ad hominem is. What Arnold did was insult the other person. That's not an ad hominem as it was never an argument. An ad hominem is when you say that an argument is wrong because of the person who made it. Not when you say that someone is stupid for making an argument.

    • @Da_maul
      @Da_maul 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd say that in this case it was close enough to ad hominem to warrant using it in that context, as he's still using insult to discredit him.
      Although I will agree that for the most part, yes, how I was using it technically does not fit the dictionary definition.

      I think the way you view the Special Olympics is quite odd; why shouldn't there be a venue for people who wish to compete, but can't because of unforseen consiquenses? I'd say you're assuming quite a bit about society, but it's an interesting argument I'll admit.

    • @Da_maul
      @Da_maul 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My assumptions come from the basic ways that human beings tend to act. I'll admit that they're sweeping and generalized, but they are based at least in part in logic. Every human has needs on a biological level, and being a social species, one of those needs is to belong and be respected by the community. Given that humans have created the concepts of "good" and "bad" to differentiate people and actions that are beneficial (or merely looked well upon) to/by the community, and ones that are not. The need to belong being a quite strong one (for abandonment meant certain death in the age that this was programmed into our genetic code), this leads people to take as many actions as they can to belong, in this case, virtue signalling that they are a good person.
      My hangup in this is that one does not need to do good to look good, so say, for example; someone wanted to project that they were a beacon of virtue, they need merely establish a normal activity (in this case, the Olympics) for a group of the underprivileged (in this case, cripples and people with some form of retardation or another). Sure, it could have been created with positive intentions instead, but that would be giving the benefit of the doubt to a group of wealthy and powerful people, which I often find is a bad idea given the nature of how one accrues and keeps wealth and power.
      Even if it was created for good intentions, it's still used in un-good ways, for example the Paralympic scandal where Spain fielded 100% fit people with no disabilities in the soccer tournament, who demolished their competition utterly. If all people involved with the event truly had good intentions, then there would be no need to cheat. As it stands, I can only see the special Olympics as yet another institution for money and power to change hands, under the guise of doing good work.
      One valid counterargument to my claims is that "even if they are doing it for shady reasons, it's still doing some good", but using the disabled as pawns in some money-making or power exchange scheme still strikes me as dishonorable, even if they are benefiting from it.
      Summing up, everything I've said is of course only opinion, if you like the special Olympics so be it. but my experience has been colored with distrust for those who claim to have good intentions, so I have trouble accepting that it's an institution formed with noble ideas in mind.
      That said, Arnold's response was still piss poor and full of virtue signalling and little else of substance, and most people who thinks it was a good comeback are blinded by ideology or stardom.

    I tried reading the comments on a video for once, since I believe many youtubers go through almost all the comments on their videos. It must be so fucking exhausting, honestly. Every third comment here is literally just "whoosh" or a variant of that word/subreddit.
    I'm writing this to let you know that I watched and enjoyed your video and the thought you put into it, just like pretty much every video on your channel(s). Great moves philip, keep it up, proud of ya

    • @__-cd9ug
      @__-cd9ug 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah I used to start comments like this but then I realize it's either the person doesn't read the comment (so the part itself is useless) or they read it and then it just looks like you're asking for attention
      it also makes the comment look like it's there only for the youtuber, and while that could be the case, it's always good to try to address as many people as possible if you think you're saying something pertinent

    • @__-cd9ug
      @__-cd9ug 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      In a way you're seeing other people's opinions like a consumable? Like, if someone has dealt with it already it's not worth getting involved, and if it's not made of anything except positivity (or negativity), you don't bother either.
      I'd say this is a great scientific approach to conversation but a poor social one? Im not 100% convinced by what I'm writing but the idea is that you're only seeking conversations or opinions that are constructive (be it criticism or just remarks).
      That's positive in a way (it's kind of the opposite of small talk) but it's also not the only thing conversations and human relationships are made of IMO.
      Unless you treat your community like a purely scientific one for which you have no affinity whatsoever (which, again, is totally fine), acknowledging "useless" comments as much as useful ones is probably good for your well-being. I believe you have some affection for your community but I might be wrong.

    IMO I'd say it's fair that Arnold responded like that because the person commented something far more offensive and deserved to see Arnold's raw and somewhat forgiving opinion on the situation.
    the problem with comment baiters online is quite unspoken and barely crosses peoples minds despite being so widespread across the internet, I believe what you stated in this video was well spoken and described enough to tell the raw truth but also not annoy or try to dehumanize people.
    this is the sort of content I like to see on TH-cam; good, honest and largely audience appealing, you and all of your other channels deserve more than just more subscribers, you deserve recognition and praise for the videos you make.

    Regarding what you said near the end about responding to nice comments. I think it's hard coming up with something to say that adds meaningful value when it's not a comment that goes against or questions your beliefs. I mean, what can you REALLY respond with that adds something to the conversation when it's someone just showing their appreciation for what you do? It doesn't question anything you do or think, and it usually doesn't leave you with something to say unless there's a question or similar.
    I think it's important to keep in mind that you don't have to add something that you find to be of value for others to value it. If someone compliments you and you respond by thanking them or giving their comment a heart they will probably be really happy to see that you noticed them. Then again, if you don't feel like you have anything to add it's probably hard to justify spending your time replying, and just saying "Thanks!" to every nice comment would probably feel weird. I'd also imagine that people would start leaving really nice comments just to get your attention, and that every comment you left thanking people would have less and less impact.
    If I were you I'd struggle with finding a balance between responding to all the different types of comments. It's probably worth keeping in mind though that you don't have to respond with essays to questions or thank people in some original way for them to appreciate it. People realize that you don't have all the time in the world to respond to the tens of thousands comments you get. I think that it's more than enough for people to just see that you've read and noticed what they have to say.

    I have a strange experience in where I over times managed to get a troll to be a good person. It's quite complicated but a friend of mine about 2 or 3 years ago when we met in a dark souls discord used to have various issues with things like over toxicity and such but after talking to them one on one I learned it was a misplaced form of coping from stress in real life. He grew up as a mix raced person in a black neighborhood and had a physicly abusive mother so was only told to fight back and never care about yourself. After leaving the dark souls discord and making a private one for some friends me and another took in on our selves to give him emotional support. After getting him to stop a suicide attempt and getting through high school he really started taking some of our lessons to heart. Now he serves in the US Marines and face games with me over his parents and has completely stopped his toxic behavior online.
    So I feel sometimes their is a reason for why someone starts trolling and harassing but also that I got lucky finding a person open to help (or at least getting tricked into getting help, he was ok with that when I told him after the fact) and that most of the times you can't do anything about it. So like Arnold Schwarzenegger in this video I feel educating someone might help better long tearm even if some people are just doing it for attention, sometimes it's cause they are people who don't get enough in their lives.
