Nice trailer, good buy! Those initial mods are exactly what i would do. I just a got a compact tractor, so this trailer looks like something I could own, also! I will be watching, sir.
You must be crazy painting the deck a dark color, that thing is going to be cooking in that Georgia sun during the summer time! Also, don't forget to stain/paint the underside of that deck because in my experience most rot from below long before they do from above. Great looking trailer! I'm in the foothills of PA so I opted for an 18' flat deck without the dovetail so I'm not dragging my rear end on some of these steep inclines around here. If I'm worried about the breakover angle I have chocks for the front tires of the truck and for the trailer. I use my jack to lift up on the hitch just a few inches and jack stand the front corners of the trailer frame which really straightens out the ramps in relation to the deck while keeping everything stable. Just remember to remove the stands and jack when you have the vehicle/equipment on the trailer so you can see how the load balances out on the trailer and move it accordingly before securing it down. Another tip even though I'm 9 months late: People like to steal winches so what we did with our work trailers (I haven't put a winch on my trailer yet, come along works fine) was dremmel out the winch plate to accept wheel studs, trimmed the studs and cleaned up with a die, and used locking lug nuts to bolt it down. I know guys that will tack a small bead or even use red loctitte but I like having the ability to pull the winch off if need be without the need or a grinder or torch or worrying about it being stolen.
It does get hot in the summertime but this trailer will be occasionally used so it will be alright. I like the idea about the locking lug nuts. Thank you for that and for the feedback. JD
10:00 that location where you mounted those d rings up front isn’t a structural part of the trailer, it’s simply a long piece of flat stock steel that is uses as a “hold down” bar for the wood deck.
That's a fair call out for sure but so far they have worked well and that plate is pretty thick and strong. I would probably agree with you it needs to be welded to something more structural. Honestly didn't think about that at the time. JD
@@spumaticcarz haven’t tried it on a smaller lower vehicle yet but w the 5 foot ramps and the 2 foot beaver tail I would think it would be fine. Def don’t get a totally flat trailer they are much higher in the back. Best thing is to go look at one every trailer and car is different. JD
Barely!! I will tell you box itself hasn't held up well and faded really bad from being out in the sun. Mechanically it still works but plan on hitting it with some paint/spray paint once in a while. JD
It can most Likely handle it but having hindsight of 20/20 I prob would have looked at the next level up car trailer meaning heavier load capacity and longer and wider (maybe a deck over the wheels or drive over fenders). I’ve found this trailer to do the job but it feels kind of maxed out w larger vehicles. To me it’s really designed for small cars and trucks. Don’t get me wrong I love the trailer and like I said it does the job but if I did it all over again I would upgrade the capacity. Hope this helps. JD
I don't like where you installed those d-rings. That metal is only 1/8" and held on with screws. I welded a 1/4" plate to the 3/16" bulkhead on mine. Just my input.
Hey bud! Curious what method you used to mount the box to the trailer tongue? I have the same trailer, minus the dovetail and have been looking for a tongue box. That looks like a good size. Did you just mount to that center bar or did you mount to the angled side bars as well? I stained my deck with semi transparent paint, but I gotta admit that black paint looks awesome. Great video!
If I remember correctly I used four stainless steel bolts and went directly into the angled sides of the front. 2 in front and 2 in the back of the inside of the tool chest. Easy to mount and fit perfectly. The box is great but the paint hasn’t held up at all. Very faded but nothing some spray paint can’t fix. For the price it’s a good box. Hope this helps. JD
@@JDOfflineCopy that! One go back...does your tongue jack clear the top of the box? I picked up the slighly larger 2 3/4 cu ft box, and it was about 1/2" too tall/deep to clear the jack handle.
Hope you stopped to pet the doggy a few times while filming. I welded a d ring in the middle of the back of my car trailer so I can use a snatch block to winch things off the trailer.
have you hauled a car or anything heavy yet? I see you didn't put your plate on. I have same trailer and have to carry 4x4s with me to load and unload because as soon as u drive on the trailer touches the ground and will squash your plate. let me know
Yes, I hauled a non running old Ford Bronco and it took the trailer right to the ground as you describe. I still have not mounted my plate due to this reason and the fact there's just not a good place to put it. I've thought about fabricating a bracket for it but just haven't done much with it. The trailer and winch worked great. If you want to see the video, it's on my channel. JD
It’s been great no issues. I kinda wish I would have bought something a little bigger because the type of vehicles I get in trouble with are normally big trucks etc. this trailer is great but it is truly designed for average size vehicles. That’s my only feedback. Can’t complain at all about the trailer or its performance. Hope this helps. JD
The flip 18 is the best cooler I have. It's my natural go to cooler for most things these days. Not too bulky, not too heavy and holds quite a bit. It's held up well of course and I've had no issues. Love that cooler! JD
