Great video! I really like how you kept it simple and showed the process step-by-step. The quick disconnect cables idea is genius - it makes things so much easier when I need to move power from the tow vehicle. Thanks for the inspiration!
Nicely done sir! Really appreciate you taking the time to show and upload this video. The quick disconnect cables is a really good idea, does give a fella an option run power directly from the tow vehicle's battery, and you saved money to boot! Also, thanks for sharing where you purchased the cable set from, I'm sure the family-owned small business appreciates the plug! Its good to support the small businesses in the modern world we live in. I'm currently doing a complete overhaul on my brother's 2006 Big Tex 70DM, removing and ditching the idle hubs on the front axles and installing complete set of Dexter electric brakes, complete with new wiring, a 10-terminal junction box, and more. Your video gave me some new ideas on incorporating a winch install for a future project. PS: Really appreciate your patriotism and love of country! Not even sure what to say my friend, this was probably the best comment I have ever received. Thank you so much for the feedback. I've been in a bit of a lull with making new videos as my wife and I built a house and now I'm dealing with a back issue. I promise more videos to come!! The winch on the trailer has held up well, I've used it several times and it's handy for some of the rigs that I chase after that may not run!! I have another video on my channel of it in use hauling a buddy of mine's Bronco and it had no issues pulling it up and it's a fairly heavy vehicle. Anyway welcome to the channel and thank you again for the great comment and feedback. Thank you for the shout out to my Dad!! God bless the USA!! JD
Awesome! Everything is working well on it and I’ve used it several times. There’s another video on my channel showing us load up a non running bronco w the winch. Works perfectly. Trailer is great as well. JD.
Hey JD. Brother, you've done it again! First of all another GREAT video! Your content, editing, information and just overall value that we get out of your videos is just second to none. It's nice to see that anytime you come across an "issue" with anything that you are working on, you always find a solution that is 100 times better than the original concept that you had in mind. You find solutions/ideas that, speaking for myself, but I'm sure many others as well, would never have thought of. Also, thank you for always giving the information on where you buy your products, part numbers, cost and how well the company does as far as pricing, customer service and overall satisfaction regarding your experience with them. I always know that hearing your experience and seeing the product from unboxing to final installation, gives me the confidence to go with a company and a product, without having to do all the research or "take a chance" with someone or something that I really don't know anything about. So, once again, thanks for all that you do. Keep up the good work. T
9:08 I 100% preach the use of Anderson Power Connectors and making the winch a quick disconnect. However I would neve recommend using you vehicle battery as the main source of power for your winch. Vehicle batteries are only meant for quick boosts of energy. AKA starting it. It is OK to do this only as a backup. Get a deep cycle battery ASAP.
@@JDOffline Well avoiding killing your truck battery, leaving you stranded, is a pretty good justification. BTW I have a setup just like I am endorsing. I have never purchased a battery for that purpose and yet I have several. I like you don't want to spend the money. I just use the batteries that I have pulled from old vehicle and lawn mowers. I like the lawn tractor/mower batteries because the are deep cycle and the are small. The plastic battery boxes are cheap and come with a strap to carry them. Tractor Supply has some for $50 and a VERY good one for $150. Got that one for a friend that uses it a lot.
Thanks for the video! Gave me some excellent ideas for my trailer. I'm doing pretty much the same setup except I added a 2" receiver to the front of my trailer and mounted the winch to a hitch-mounted bracket so I can move it around for different uses. Keep on keeping on!
No. That wire is used for recharging a battery. If you try to direct power a winch with it, you could burn up your winch and/or your vehicle. That wire supplies only a few amps, the winch uses roughly 400 amps. Winches need to power off of a battery.
Im getting ready to put a winch on my car haulin trailer i like your way you done it so im following the way you done it on mine and thanks for giving the links
Hey Ed. That may not be a bad idea depending on how much I do at night. Put the trailer and winch to it's first test this weekend towing Matt's Bronco. Did really well. Video coming soon! JD
I do have two batteries (from factory). I connected the positive cable directly to the positive battery terminal. It works well and I have used it several times now. JD
@@Backfire10 I haven’t had a problem w that. I leave the truck running so that helps plus it’s a diesel so it came w two batteries from the factory. JD
I've had this set up for a few years now and have hauled several vehicles on the car trailer as well as winching everything from an old Camaro to a C30 dually. I've had zero issues. More power would be better but this one has never failed to load up a vehicle. JD
Two of them toward the front of the trailer are through a metal plate that is part of the trailer. The two toward the rear of the trailer (front of the winch) are just through the mounting plate and the deck boards. So far this set up has worked well for me with no issues. JD
It does the job and will need to be recoated every few years but it looks good and is holding up well. This trailer only sees occasional use so for my application this works well. JD
That’s a good point. I guess you could always throw a spare battery in the tool box but I really don’t pull that trailer w anything but my 2500 diesel. I can tell you that set up has worked well for me several times now. I was a little worried the 8k pound winch wouldn’t be enough but it’s plenty. JD
Big wheel studs and locking lug nuts do a great job and keep people from stealing your winch. Just use a dremmel to square off the rounded holes on the backside (underneath) so they will recess and lock in. Personally, I would have just bought the battery but this setup adds a lot of functionality to the rear of the truck. With a little longer jumper leads you can probably jump from the rear of the truck, run a power inverter and power tools from the bed, and operate your winch from a hitch mount if need be. I think I might consider doing something like this just for the sake of auxiliary power in the rear but I'm in no rush. It is snowing right now and the wife isn't paying me to be out in that so it can wait. Hahaha
I like the set up and it has worked well so far (again occasional use). Because I don't use it all the time I think I would have struggled to keep the battery charged. I have seen and started looking into the inverter set up but went this route and like I said, so far so good. Stay warm!! JD
I have done the same thing but I am running into the problem of the winch slowing down after about thirty seconds of running. I added a battery under the hood and ran the cable like you did but again running into the problem with the winch slowing down.
I have not had any issues. Please note that I don’t use this frequently as it is for hobbies etc. I have used it several times though and so far the set up works great.

Can you connect to the 7 pin connector for power to winch? It's 12v source

I think they are just universal connectors. Search for the cables on Amazon and you should be able to find the connectors from there. JD

Are all the bolts for the winch / mounting plate just in the wood or are some in the frame?
