      Oh my God, Jasper, you Excited me greatly @11:01 you injected "performative" in the criticism of the female preacher I had a Eureka moment, - let me explain, I am 73 Years old Episcopal Raised man who has come to Loathe the Church, in America. I have now a way back to Christ, St. Boniface Church is a short walk and The Father will not shame Christ like the Protestant performative Assholes.
      I have been so disgusted with American Blasphemy perpetuated by means of Martin Luther's Protestant Church, my family were Jews who chose The Church of England (Anglican Catholic) years ago.
      I can now Return to the faith, not as a great believer, but because St. Boniface in San Francisco is the Homeless and Poor folk Benefactors I got my Covid-19 Vaccines there, in the 1980's I slept in there, the Basement was a Shelter, that allowed Transsexuals inside. I am a Transsexual.
      I have no problem with cross dressing and Scriptures, I have read the Torah and all the Real Bible, which is Not the New Testament. Paul the Apostate with his Hatred and Blasphemies destroyed Protestant Religion.
      Well there I go ^^^ ranting and raving.
      YET I am not able to keep fear of Hells Fires although The JEWS Knew of No Such a Thing as a Hell after Death, That is a Invention to Keep People in Perpetual Terror, and these poor idiots who believe Go To Hell Fairy tale act like Being a Christian means You Do Not Go To Hell, because Blood of Jesus?
      American Religion is performative like P.T. Barnum These a Sucker Born Every Minute, Never Give a Sucker a Even Chance."

    Very good story. I interpreted it as a tale of madness and hypocrisy in which the vicar's mistress sacrificed (murdered) the children. However, for a moment near the end when the vicar was talking about the resurrection, I thought that his wife might be going to come back from the grave to take revenge on the two villains of the piece. I liked your ending more, but I think this would have been one instance in which the supernatural appearance of a vengeful revenant would have been happier than the all too real horrors of the material world.
    It's a meager silver lining, but t least the cat and the dog survived. "A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast: But the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel." -Proverbs 12:10

    • @EnCryptedHorror
      @EnCryptedHorror  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you. Yes, I certainly intended a tale of madness and hypocrisy, and, yes, I possibly went a shade too dark. I suppose the inciting idea was having been at an actual church and witnessing the children being led off and I had the thought, "What if they didn't come back?" There could, of course, have been a supernatural twist.
      Someone took me to task in the comments (I think they deleted it after) on the grounds that the descent into madness was unrealistic. I suspect, partly, they took exception to the distortion of Christian scripture. I increasingly review my own stories I've recorded as first drafts. Were I to revise this one I think I would have included further evidence of the vicar's insanity (perhaps the finding of a Bible with pages ripped out and scrawled over and out of sequence). But at the time I liked the idea that the descent had happened "in the dark", so to speak.
      Thanks for your comment.

    • @JT_Soul
      @JT_Soul 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@EnCryptedHorror I thought the darker elements of the story were done well. I also liked how the vicar's angry sermon about the evils of gossip, while clearly unhinged and beyond the pale, did point out a real flaw in the village community. Everyone in the village knew that the vicar and his mistress were engaging in increasingly deranged behaviour, and they all rather enjoyed talking about it... but none of them intervened to see if these two evidently quite troubled people needed some help in their growing emotional and mental distress. And, even while gleefully discussing the escalating evidence of their violent and disturbed behaviour, the villagers kept blithely handing over their children to them every Sunday (like lambs to the slaughter, ultimately). I thought it was an interesting exploration of the bystander effect, cognitive dissonance, apathy, and lack of empathy. At a broader level, we see this kind of "village gossip effect" in how we consume media, with the public drawn to ever darker and more titillatingly bizarre stories without ever stopping to consider what we could and should do to help those involved... at least until something really terrible happens that directly affects us. I think your use of the small community as a microcosm of society as a whole was very effective, in the tradition of Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery" or much of Stephen King's work.

    Your voice reminds me of the Inquisitor from Joe Abercrombie’s

      I wasn't familiar with this, so I checked it out on TH-cam and, yes, I see what you mean 😃
      It was my voice first though 😄

      I was trying to imply that the vicar's mistress had stabbed the children in a confused sacrificial act (hence the vicar's sermon about human bodies being transformed in death). The mother was so traumatised she was also transformed mentally.
      I think if I were to revisit this story I might include more details of the vicar and his mistress's strange mangling of their faith.
