  • Visiting the town of Shorn for a weekend of golf, a young man sees more than he bargained for when peering through a hole in an old wall. Gradually, he begins to uncover part of the town’s dark history.
This original recording is an audio presentation by Jasper L'Estrange for EnCrypted Horror. “Behind the Wall” by Violet Jacob (1910).
You can hear me discuss this story by becoming a channel member and listening to a future episode of The EnCrypted Postmortem (www.youtube.co....
CREATOR’S NOTE: My recordings contain a mixture of audio narration, sound effects, and music because that’s what I enjoy making and what I personally like to listen to. If you don’t, good for you. Our differences in taste and opinion are what makes this world such a wonderful place and we are very fortunate to live at a time when our entertainment choices are almost without limit. I choose stories to narrate based on my personal taste. I don’t think every one of them is a masterpiece, but I find something to enjoy in all of them. They are usually early twentieth century. Sometimes you might find the language, attitudes, representations objectionable to your modern sensibilities. A wise man once said “The past is a foreign country…” It can certainly be nice to visit from time to time, not to mention illuminating.

Whenever I hear you tell a tale, I can’t help but think that if the authors of these stories could hear you they would smile and think , “ Yes, that is exactly how my story should be told!” You do these stories a great justice! I really loved the descriptive and subtly eerie style of this author….and as always, you told it so well!!! Thank you Jasper! Another excellent story! ❤️🐙

Oh the kind of thing I can't resist! An old door in a garden wall.
I passed one in a street in our city ,(the city is just over 200 years old, but retains some original structures), when I was a small child, and always wanted to see behind it. It's still there but sadly the garden has gone.
It's wonderful that someone else's imagination has been fired by this same thing.
    Great story. Thanks Jasper.
Please excuse a small critique here on your soundscape for this one. They are always so en pointe that I noticed an omission.
    A murmuration of Starlings.
Sparrows are always around in gardens, but in the evenings Starlings make quite a racket as they settle into the trees. It's something that says "evening", and I've heard it in so many places.
Thanks Jasper. Keep letting the weirdness in.

@EnCryptedHorror Oh! I'm truly sorry to hear that. I have, at times, been in the same boat, and the only comforting thing I have ever been able to come up with is, "Things go wrong, and life goes sour for spells, but that's just so you will know when things are getting BETTER!", and "There's never a problem without a gift for you in its hands. We have these things because we NEED their gifts."
The latter statement is a paraphrase from a fantasy trilogy, "The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, Unbeliever", and the line is spoken by Lord Mhoram, a very fulsom and wise Wizarding character.
It's probable that what's going on isn't anything CLOSE to needing that kind of counsel, but it could be, and since you're highly unlikely to say so to the huge audience of YouBoob, I offer this so that maybe it's helpful.

Thanks for a new, to me, author.
You keep finding fresh material in a medium that's becoming less original and more socially (read least common denominator) driven. Grrr.
Sorry, it's the heat making me crankier.
Being a misanthrope and a curmudgeon, not to mention (omg) an introvert; I truly appreciate your research.
You seem to have a knack for finding untapped veins of literary gold.
Enjoying your work as much as I do presents me with a small conundrum.
I want you to thrive and gain a wider, if not weirder, audience; I may as well throw in healthy, good looking and wealthy.
On the other hand, I'm afraid the seepage from adoring millions will change your taste from the idiosyncratic, eclectic joy it is, leaving me behind and bereft as you're swept away by fame, money and glory.
Stay quirky. I love it! ❤

Am I the only one who watches and pays attention to how our animals are talking to us all the time? I know I'm not.
I like stories that credit our "dumb chums" with extra sensory awareness.
My mule saved me from a certain copperhead bite by pointing at where I was going to step as I dismounted, in short boots for a wonder, and showing her snake face. She had a wasp face, too. I know she could sense those in the ground. She'd make a small half circle detour in a featurless trail and I'd hear from other riders about hitting that nest as they were later to the spot.
The rangers at that park trusted us when we reported yellow jacket nests or unusual snake behaviors, even a denning bear at one camp site. When they asked how I knew the things I did, I'd tell them I didnt but my mule did and I believed her.
Had a dog that would warn me when a rowdy bar was about to explode. He was never wrong, either, being sober at the time. 😅

Is it just me, or do bad things happen to people who frequent the golf course? It seems to be a good place to commit suicide (à la The Old Man's Beard) or dump a body, as Agatha Christie likes to do, or just come across things that require some stranger danger management, like in The Fifteenth Green..... I'm glad I get my exercise elsewhere.😂😂😂 Love it Mr. J. Another classic for my daily playlist.

@@SandyBrrr Crazy golf's about my limit (recently branded as Adventure Golf I notice). When I was researching stories I found an article in a 1920s magazine asking whether golf was a suitable pastime for adults. It seems to have always been a bit controversial, I suppose because it required great tracts of land and, of course, it quickly developed a reputation for dodgy dealings and the like. I wonder if it was just a topical subject for stories of this vintage and also, as someone else noted in the comments, whether some of the stories were written by "golf widows" out of revenge 😄
