    Oh man, I'm so glad you're uploading food videos on this channel as well. Food is the one and only love of my life so I always enjoy seeing foodie content. I wanna try those sweet pea leaves with garlic and that black sesame dessert, I love anything black sesame 😭I also really appreciate you including the section about how to eat leftovers. I never waste any food myself so I always love tips for eating leftovers. I'm so excited to see more foodie adventures from you! 💕

      I’ve been mulling about how to balance out posting videos for King Kogi, but also, I don’t want to completely abandon my OG baby EYK. So I’ve got a different video for EYK coming out that can be enjoyed on its own, but is also a companion video to this Dim Sum video. My brain hurts 😂 Yes I am a strong non food waster, and it has only got more intense in my old age haha I thought it was so cool when Lee Hyori got older and she said she brings Tupperware to restaurants so she doesn’t waste the leftovers 💕

    As a Cantonese person, it is wonderful to see dimsum loved. Martina, I think you will like 炸兩. It literally translates to fried pair. Essentially, it is those deep fried long, savoury-like doughnuts, 油條, that is usually paired with congee, soy milk, or Taiwanese fried bread (燒餅). It is then wrapped in rice noodle sheet, 腸粉. Drizzle a bit of the sweet soy sauce and it’s chewy, crunchy, sweet, and savoury.
    Good snow pea sprout or 豆苗, can be hard to come by because it can easily get tough if not harvested at its time of perfection or animals get to it first. Very good to see that your dish has young tender looking leaves.
    Toronto is a beautiful place for dimsum and 粥粉飯麵 (congee, rice noodle, rice, wheat noodles). I miss it ever so much.

    • @KingKogi
      @KingKogi  3 ปีที่แล้ว +48

      Oooohhh I’ve had those for the first time this year when I ordered congee delivery, and they were UNSTOPPABLY GOOD. It wasn’t wrapped in a rice noodle sheet but def had condensed milk in a small container. Do you think that is something different? Because I really want to try what you just described 🤤

    • @Lilixia310
      @Lilixia310 3 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      @@KingKogi Hi Martina, what you’re describing sounds like 炸饅頭, plain steamed buns that are then deep fried and dipped into condensed milk. Ideally the inside should still be fluffy. I hope yours were fluffy.
      You may see 油條 on menu as “oil stick,” “you tiao,” or maybe as “Chinese doughnut.” Well, Chinese doughnut isn’t exactly spot on because there are many kinds. I can go on for a bit about the different types, but I digress.
      油條 are long, about a foot long, and fried in pairs that you can tear in half after. You can add it to congee, eat it plain, have it rolled in 腸粉 (rice noodle sheets), etc. If only I can share pictures with you to better describe it.

    • @crispyside
      @crispyside 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@KingKogi actually yes, it's the same thing! not sure where you ordered congee, but in southeast asia, these bread sticks are often dipped in condensed milk, whereas traditionally in chinese cuisine they're either eaten plain with soymilk or the dim sum version, wrapped in rice paper!

    Thanks for sharing your love for dim sum! The Chinese sausage like what people here have said, is Lup Cheong. Some food show host refer to it as Chinese chorizo but lup cheong is sweeter…
    Pro tip for lazy people who don’t know what to do with their leftover non-fried dimsum: if you don’t have a steamer of sorts at home, pop a cup of water together with your plate of dim sum in the microwave when you’re reheating. The cup of water creates the moisture like a steamer so you won’t have dried out dim sum.
    Enjoy!

    Holy moly, I've been saving my first viewing of this video for when I had a really rough day. And sure enough, I came to see this today and was laughing and having a great time in seconds!
    I've been a "shadow" of a follower of yours since waaaay back in the k-pop music monday years, but never really engaged with comments and whatnot. I just wanted to say- Martina, thank you so much for sharing your joy and creativity with the world.

    Here in the Philippines, we call HarGaw, "Hakaw". And it is a MUST ORDER when eating dimsum! We love it with a little drop of the chilli-garlic oil. Fried sesame balls, which we call "Buchi", are the quintessential Chinese dessert. One is never enough! You never fail to make me hungry with your 'mukbang' videos.
    Also!
    Sometimes we request the Chinese restaurant we frequent to send us frozen dimsum packs. Then we just steam what we can eat. and preserve the rest for other days.

    Pro tip for reheating: har gao can be reheated by steaming it again, it will soften the outside. And while it won't be as good when it is fresh, if you've got a lot leftover you can still eat it!
    The sesame balls can be put in the oven, and will come out hot and crunchy!

    Hi Martina, if you weren't aware of it, you can warm up the glutinous rice wrapped in lotus leaf in a steamer/bamboo basket. I normally have it topped with chill oil to taste. Chill oil goes really good with the pan fried radish cake as well.

      Lotus leaf and red bean sesame balls are really good too. There is (or used to be anyway) a couple of Chinese/Hong Kong bakeries just around the corner from Rol San that have a nice variety and pretty cheap too. I think on Dundas just east of Spadina.

    Chinese call that sweet sausage Lop Cheung, and Vietnamese call it Lap Xuong. It is commonly used in Vietnamese fried rice. The rice in the lotus leaf has many iterations. Vietnamese have a similar dish called Banh Chung. It is pressed in banana leaf with pork belly and mung bean paste. A common way we eat it is pressed and fried into a pancake. Let the outside get a little crunchy frying and then dip in a lil sugar and enjoy as a sweet and savory pancake.

    YES ROL-SAN! SO GOOD! Shout out for the snow pea leaves, my fav! I like your leftovers/fridge strategy. I haven't eaten there since before the pandemic, but that place is popular and rowdy and a lot of fun. May I add tips for my fellow vegetarian Torontonians & future visitors: Rol-san doesn't have a ton of veg options, but there's a couple of more veg-friendly spots in the area. There's a small, quiet place about 2 blocks away in Baldwin Village called Dim Sum Queen, its down some stairs so its easy to miss. It's delicious and serves both meat/seafood and lots of vegetarian options, so it's good if you're dining in mixed groups. The veg choices are clearly marked on the menu with a little leaf (get the lotus wrapped sticky rice made with mushrooms!). A couple blocks the other direction in Kensington Market is a 100% vegetarian Chinese restaurant called King's Cafe which has some veg/vegan dim sum options and even sells things like frozen vegetarian BBQ pork buns you can take home to steam later!

    The sauce in the stuffed eggplant is likely the same as what you get for the cheung fun (steamed rice rolls)! It's actually just diluted soy with water and sugar but Cantonese people sometimes like to "cook" the soy sauce first which totally changes the flavour. It's completely different tasting than other soy sauces (different Asian countries have different tasting soy sauces, and with Cantonese people there's different kinds of soy sauce for different purposes we're real serious about this stuff haha).
