@@shadowphoenix8962 Yes, gambling was often a part of a "House of ill Repute" as were drug and alcohol sales. The house was by no means a casino. It was a brothel, bordello, or whore house that also had gambling. The Hotel Villa Convento on Ursulines Street is rumored to be the legendary house. More common is the lore of a structure at 828 St. Louis St., which in the 1800s was said to be a bordello run by Madame Marianne Le Soleil Levant, whose surname is French for "rising sun."

In the 60's (& 70's) we were hit with ground breaking NEW SOUNDS almost weekly. Occasionally one would be even more outstandingly ground breaking than normal. This was one of those. Today, everything's been heard & done and it's probably hard for people to understand the sort of impact a song like this had on us. I saw them soon after the release of this and they were teriffic. Would you believe in a 200 capacity dance hall. Back then, chart hit maker's were playing club's with between a 100 and 200 audiance...
This is beyond iconic in that it comes from a folk song originally. I'm assuming the folk song originated in the southern US, but I honestly don't recall. I'm sure the info can be found, but just a quick history for those that want to jump into google and learn more...
It's thought that the "Rising Sun" was a traditional name for British pubs, but the song itself probably comes from the US South. The originak version is from a girl's point of view, but the Animals changed it to a boy's point of view.
Eric Burden... Lead singer of Eric Burden & The Animals. Dear friends, performed this song at my last open outdoor charity event for Children's Hospital Orange County. in Newport Beach/Irvine area. OC, CA. Eric"s timing was perfect. As the day came to an end, Eric & the guys doing the last set, the sun started to set over the hills into the Pacific Ocean, give bf the most magnificent finale to match the heavenly colors of the summer sunset, as a sea of a mix of 7000 bikers, Hospital Exec, wives, girlfriends, all arm in arm waving back and forth, singing along with the band as in tandum raining their bic liters, bringing new flickering glows across the meadows to honor the great Eric Burden & The Animals gracing us with a closure of "House Of The Rising Sun" as the sky gave into darkness, the sun....into the sea... this time as it set. Perfect ending to a beautiful day, and my last charity event. I retired after that event. So blessed, never forget how humble, with such grace Eric, and the guys treated the guests, mingled among them, as if old buddies. Everytime I hear this song, it brings back great memories. 🙏💞🕊️🎼💞😍

Apparently it's tune is from an old English folk song.
My Uncles friend was a minder for this group back in the day, always loved this song 👍🏻
A song so old that people still argue it's beginning.
I'm a metal head and this is my all time favorite song. You should check out Procol and Harum Whiter shade of pale. It's a beauty from the same era.
First recorded in the 1930's but older than that by several years. The Animals were the most successful with their version.
Absolute classic 60's British rock. 👍🏼
that guitar blows my mind and that Eric Burden is one street wise dude according to my dog who loves this song
FYI. This was the song that finally knocked the Beatles' "I Want To Hold Your Hand" out of the #1 slot.
India when that song came out I was 5, I like the way you keep an open mind about these songs, Thank you much for that
Thank you for reacting to this. “We Got to Get Out of this Place” and “Don’t Let Me be Misunderstood” are awesome songs by them, too.
Imagine defacing the American flag to defend the corrupt police unions. I’ll pray for you
I was born in 73 and have heard it played on radio my whole life. I wander how this version felt to the culture in 64? I mean it played on radio between hair metal ballots songs during the 80's along side whatever garbage from the 90's and on up. My daughter are 14 , and 16 it played off of my Pandora account the other day and they loved it. This version seems timeless .
I've heard old scratchy vinal versions of this song from way back yonder by old time black players. ( Lead Belly maybe????)
chas chandler, guy on bass, even considered himself a mediocre musician. his greatest contribution to rock and roll was in discovering Jimi Hendrix, bringing him to England, getting him signed to a record deal and becoming his manager.
This is a very old song. My mother was born in 1923 and sang a version of this song of this song in a pub in Leeds , Yorkshire England in 1939. The Haddon Hall in Burley Leeds.
😎 India it’s so great that you are turning others on to some of these songs!! And you have excellent taste in the artists and choice of songs. This was my era and thank you 😘
Oh god i love this song so much, nice that you reacted to them :)
For whatever reason, this song always reminds me of my father. ❤. Today would have been his birthday. Thank you so much for the soft smile on my face and in my heart ❤😔
🖤℁
His voice is amazingly haunting
Nobody belts out the blues like Eric Burdon.
This song is public domain, Nobody is certain who actually wrote it. The oldest recording of it was in 1933.
The Animals are underrated because they were ' bad ' back when being bad wasn't cool.
