  • 2023 Dec 02, Sat, 58°F -- Mt. Takao (高尾山, Takao-san) is one of the most visited and climbed mountain in Japan. Michelin Guide honored Mt. Takao with 3-stars for its breathtaking nature, rich history and unique culture. It only takes about an hour to reach this beautiful place from Shinjuku. Best time to visit is during Sakura and Koyo seasons. Instead of taking the cabe car, we hiked from the foot of the mountain via the popular Omotesando Trail, aka Trail 1 to the top of the mountain. The trailhead is just next to Kiyotaki "chair lift" station. The hike is moderate, with path paved, wide and easy to walk. The winding trail got steeper and harder to climb as we got closer to the summit. Halfway from Kiyotaki Station is Takao-san "cable car" Station. We continued to hike up, passing Yakuōin Temple, considered as one of the most beautiful, well-maintained Buddhist temples in Japan. In a few minutes, we got to the peak summit (Omiharashidai), which is relatively smaller compared to Mt Fuji. During this visit, the weather was excellent, but thick, low cloud occluded the view of Mt Fuji. We could have stayed and waited, like most patient climbers would do, for the cloud to dissipate and get a clear view of Mt Fuji. But we decided to hike back and took the chair lift (ropeway) down, which took about 12 min to get to the foot of the mountain. Exciting experience, yes, but not too safe, IMHO. The lift chair has no safety bar protecting passengers. There is a safety net below the ropeway, 'though.
