With the Dante's inferno/ divine comedy confusion, the divine comedy is made up of three parts, inferno, purgotorio and paradiso, but most people only care about inferno.
@Alistair Stormbreaker neither is paradisio in the Divine comedy Dante travels through hell then to purgatory to get to heaven to find the inspiration to keep living before being sent back to earth
Dantes inferno is pretty much the origin of our modern picture of what hell is like. Contrary to popular belief, most Abrahamic religions didn't really have a hell incorporated until dante's divine comedy.
The first layer of Hell, Avernus is not ruled by Bel anymore. By the time of 5e lore, the former celestial Zariel has become the Archduchess of Avernus.
I just want to remind people that there are people who are Zariel tieflings, which means that at some point, someone saw Zariel in her devil form and thought "I wanna put my dick in that!"
Just to clarify for the people that got confused when he was talking about Levistus being freed with the help of Bel he meant Belial the father of Lady Freide (Idk how to spell her name) not to be confused with Bel the Arch-Duke of Avernus. 42:45 ish
The Dungeoncast Just real quick since you’re here would you guys play a campaign involving the 9 Hells or some Devils/Arch-Duke? They’re very very interesting and I’m sure it’ll take a ton of planning since they’re cunning, resourceful, plan things way ahead of time and all that. I think it’d be incredible especially with the way you guys talk I think it’d be great. Cheers to you guys amazing channel.
A Nine-hells centric campaign would be a blast, but we are currently beginning a different campaign concept we are going to release here on the channel.
LE is my favorite alignment, so I love everything to do with devils. It's always kind of confused me that tiamat once ruled avernis, despite the fact that I always see her as CE.
maybe the aspects of tiamat that we see in modules is CE to create chaos on the established system, but tiamat as a whole is LE, since she seeks to rule everything Or maybe it was a typo every single time
@@joakker8820I think Tiamat is closer to a Demon Lord in attitude. Sure, they seek to dominate and rule everything, but they also love destroying. Tiamat was probably like that as a ruler, and that's probably why she's no longer the ruler in Avernus lol
I think if Tiamat was actually given a choice, she'd make her domain the Abyss and not the Nine Hells. There's a reason there's a disparity between her deity listings vs her avatar's and aspect's stat sheets on whether she's Chaotic Evil or Lawful Evil. She's called the Queen of Chaos, and was described as, to paraphrase, "a fiend of chaos bound to a plane of law." Her Nurture is Lawful, but I'd argue her NATURE is Chaotic.
The Dark 8 being replaced as each one dies by an identical one for the morale of the troops, reminds me of the Persian Immortals! Most people know them from the movie 300, of course. But they were a real unit of exactly 10,000 of the most elite Persian soldiers of the time. And every time one was felled or had to be replaced, they were, and very quickly. Always back to 10,000 exactly. So it appeared as if the soldiers of the army were.. Immortal, and couldn't die. I wonder if the inspiration for the Dark 8 came from that? Either way, a neat connection/similarity I noticed.
This episode is going to help me quite a bit in my homebrew. Where I have it to where orcis has died (much like the actual lore of dnd) but has created an abomination to work for his goal of destruction in his passing. I really like the idea of dropping them into part of the nines to learn of the true villian behind the curtain.
Thank you for this video. I am home brewing a campaign where the abyss is seeping into the martial plain. And the devils seeing the demon growing in power try to intervene. This information is extremely helpful.
Coulda mentioned Dispater's iron petrification into rusting grasp style of execution to do him justice gives him a really cool warden of the iron city feel
Thanks so much for this video! Your basic overview of the 6th helped me build out some backstory for my Warlock Tiefling's Patron, an Erinyes under the command of Glasya. Much appreciated.
Awesome vid, guys! I think as of 5th edition Bel has been deposed from his seat in Avernus by its former ruler Zariel. I think Mike Mearls has said a lot of this stuff will be further described in their next book.
Tyrants of the Nine Hells is a wonderful lore Bible.. I loved those books: Lords of Madness, Tyrants of the Nine Hells, Hords of the Abyss, Draconomicon, Libris Mortis, Elder Evils... . late 3.5 had it going on
The Divine Comedy is the trilogy. The Inferno is the first book, all about Hell. Purgatorio is about purgatory. Paradiso is about Heaven. Each one has a lot of layers and Dante goes through each, fangirling over all the popular people of his time and calling out people he hates.
Dante’s Divine Comedy is written in 3 parts. Part 1 is Inferno traversing the 9 circles of hell, then Dante transcends through purgatorio, and finally ends in the mounts of paradisio through heaven where his guide changes from the poet/philosopher Virgil into his deceased ex-girlfriend who he deifies into a saint… It’s considered a “comedy” because it concludes in heaven on a high note… basically “happy ending” equals comedy, “bad ending” is a tragedy.
I have a father/daughter combo playing in one of my games. For the least year shes been a member of the school of Hellfire. Her father doesn't know that she's a member or has anything to do with the school out of game. Im working her towards using hellfire. In older editions hellfire bypassed resistance and immunity to fire. She got a imp to take the place of the familiar from the spell and takes the form of a tressym. It actually impregnated another players pet tressym, so im just waiting for the kittens to transform.
After watching Helluva Boss I want to run a Nine Hells themed D&D campaign and this video was a lot of help explaining this bizarrely horrifying realm!
Would love arch devil episodes but I can see how it would be more that's not used often. Is there any devils that have a personal grudge against any demon lord? That would be good for campaigns. When/if you do arch devil lore I'd love to get more on previous ones
In part one of three of the divine comedy known as inferno hell is also divided into nine layers. The ninth is where satan is. By crawling into into his belly button the go to purgatory which is part two. Then eventually to heaven part three.
Question about hellfire. Do creatures who have resistance to regular fire or fire spells carry that into attacks made by hellfire? In my games I say no, but what does the lore say
In 5e yeah. The hells have changed a lot over time. Malbolge, for example, isn't even the exploded hag they talked about anymore. Now it's an infinite mountain slope with reinforced iron citadels on the mountain side that protect the devils from the infinite boulders that roll down the slope for all eternity.
If anyone listening to this has gone through basic training, they have an intrinsic understanding of what hell and lawful evil manifests as. DMs should picture the prototypical devil as drill sergeant Heartman from Full Metal Jacket.
Uhhhh.... but there is a boatman, he's a yugoloth... and you can probably guess the name. You have a lore channel, and been playing this game for how long now?
I feel like the guy on the left is just pointless. Making weird references to things not related to dnd. He just doesn't stop. ***edit Now that I listen more. Hes not thhaaaat bad. But still. Appreciate all the lore though
Really liked this show, first time watching, idk if this has changed or if this feedback has been given but for me the guy on the right made this significantly less enjoyable
Brian has to know more about all these topics then he let's on. His contribution is distracting and annoying. He has a good voice for this so I recommend he help communicate content and stop being a foil. It's not cute.
Well In 5e Bel got removed to a Lieutenant to Zariel a once angel was defeated in battle on Avernus but.now a Archdevil that Rules the first. Yeah Fierna and Belial have a incest sexual relationship and have difference of opinion of politics.
With the Dante's inferno/ divine comedy confusion, the divine comedy is made up of three parts, inferno, purgotorio and paradiso, but most people only care about inferno.
I see! Thanks for the info!
@Alistair Stormbreaker neither is paradisio in the Divine comedy Dante travels through hell then to purgatory to get to heaven to find the inspiration to keep living before being sent back to earth
Thesubscriber Withnothingtodo In the inferno part one of three of the divine comedy there are nine layers of hell
@agares0034 Most people (even non-Catholics) know that. Why is it a problem?
Dantes inferno is pretty much the origin of our modern picture of what hell is like. Contrary to popular belief, most Abrahamic religions didn't really have a hell incorporated until dante's divine comedy.
"Bel has the most secure position"
Zariel: ...
Zariel: Hold my sword...
Hahaha I remember reading that. You're right. So really No Pit Fiend level devil is ever safe.
The first layer of Hell, Avernus is not ruled by Bel anymore. By the time of 5e lore, the former celestial Zariel has become the Archduchess of Avernus.

Yes, I misspoke here. Thank you :)

JARHEAD Casorol How has this campaign been going?
The painting you were talking about is Relativity by M.C. Esher
KendrilThomsigh most underrated comment
Coulda mentioned Dispater's iron petrification into rusting grasp style of execution to do him justice gives him a really cool warden of the iron city feel
Thanks so much for this video! Your basic overview of the 6th helped me build out some backstory for my Warlock Tiefling's Patron, an Erinyes under the command of Glasya. Much appreciated.
Love you guys content makes my dm job so much easier thanks
I swear, I didn't make a deal with a devil for this video to pop up in my feed. I'm just subscribed!
Thank you guys so much for the video you are my favorite channel for d&d stuff.
The Divine Comedy is the collective name for Dante's Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradisio
Guy on left: *words words words*
Guy on right: “Oh so it’s like *words words words*?”
Guy on left: “no..”
Thanks for the video also metphstoploes is my favorite.
Pleasure Dome : 2 Enter, 1 Leaves

Baldur's gate: Descent into Avernus! Im so hype for it, and this podcast is only fueling the hype
Mordenkainen's TOF agrees. The stat block on Zariel calls her the ruler of Avernus.
The painting that you're thinking about with all the staircases is by MC Escher
Awesome video as usual keep up the work

We gonna hear bout our boy Asmo here?
I wonder if they will ever do a Zariel episode?

I forgot to mention that in 3.5 hellfire had a cost, i believe it did temporary ability damage to the user.
Trying to overthrow Asmodeus is technically not illegal, Baalzebul was punished for forging and altering records in the process
I thought in Dante's Inferno, Asmodai(who'm Asmodeus is named after) Sits in a frozen lake from the waste up in the 9th level.
that's Satan
After watching Helluva Boss I want to run a Nine Hells themed D&D campaign and this video was a lot of help explaining this bizarrely horrifying realm!
My new lair is the last guy. Lmao
Did you mean to say Belial rather than Bel when speaking of Levistus? It was a bit confusing but if that's what you intended then it makes sense.
Bit of correction: as far as I know, the river Styx only flows through Avernus and Stygia (the first and fifth layers). Still an amazing video tho.
You boys are awesome! Love you, Mama
The blue balls man lol
Would love arch devil episodes but I can see how it would be more that's not used often. Is there any devils that have a personal grudge against any demon lord? That would be good for campaigns. When/if you do arch devil lore I'd love to get more on previous ones
The boatman is charun. Ferry man of the Styx. Birthed from the cauldron of ancient nighthags.
In D&D, that would be a Merrenoloth
Its 'La Divina Comedia' The Divine Comedy. It consists of Paradisio, Purgatorio, and Inferno, written by the poet Dante.
In part one of three of the divine comedy known as inferno hell is also divided into nine layers. The ninth is where satan is. By crawling into into his belly button the go to purgatory which is part two. Then eventually to heaven part three.
According to the DMG, avernus is currently ruled by Zariel, not Bel
that's very recent in the lore and they might have looked into the wrong book.
Inferno is one book in a trilogy known as the divine comedy its like infirno paridise and im blanking on the third
Purgatorio or in english purgatory
Paradise is the third one.
Why is the center of paper manufacture in an ice plane devoid of trees?
Question about hellfire. Do creatures who have resistance to regular fire or fire spells carry that into attacks made by hellfire? In my games I say no, but what does the lore say
Lore says no.
Would you guys do an yep on the bailor
Isn’t zariel the arch duchess of avernus?
In 5e yeah. The hells have changed a lot over time. Malbolge, for example, isn't even the exploded hag they talked about anymore. Now it's an infinite mountain slope with reinforced iron citadels on the mountain side that protect the devils from the infinite boulders that roll down the slope for all eternity.
Dang..
Wonder what happens if someone steals the Nine's copy of the Pact Prime? Hmm.
Dianoga! (spoken in Elok Bol the Enchainer voice)
So what we're saying is Maladomini is Pittsburgh. Got it.
Is there a reason you left out Zariel?
Bro let the guy talk the commentary is fun but holy moly there was a lot of interrupting
Seriously, a bit is fine but sometimes I feel like I'm interrupted everytime I get into it
I’m here from the future to ask you to make a Zariel episode
Anywhere that says "not for kids" I go for safety, shelter, and sanctuary, .... from kids.
If anyone listening to this has gone through basic training, they have an intrinsic understanding of what hell and lawful evil manifests as. DMs should picture the prototypical devil as drill sergeant Heartman from Full Metal Jacket.
Offalion sounds like one of those fake "American Neighborhoods" you see in Russian spy movies lol.
Uhhhh.... but there is a boatman, he's a yugoloth... and you can probably guess the name. You have a lore channel, and been playing this game for how long now?
I'm late, blame the algorithm
You should do a playthrough of the dark souls series on TDC plays, since youve never played it. Id watch that shit :D
Got here at 666 likes........i see what you did there.
Not far, bel, asmodeus
Hell has 9 levels, cats have 9 lives... cats are he devil i see where this is going...
All I got from this is Even Hell hates its HR department
1000th like 🤗👌🏼
Devils > Demons
M.C. Escher
I really want to like the video,
But I feel I am helping with the blood war by leaving it at 666
It is safe to come back its in the 7 hundreds now. You're welcome.
Wanna add a like, but with 666 likes, I don't think I can in good faith break that number, lol
The guy on the right is just a comic relief distraction...continously side tracking the content. Cant stand him.
I feel like the guy on the left is just pointless. Making weird references to things not related to dnd.
He just doesn't stop.
***edit
Now that I listen more. Hes not thhaaaat bad. But still.
Appreciate all the lore though
The dude on the right has some cringy jokes...
Who’s here in 2024?
Really liked this show, first time watching, idk if this has changed or if this feedback has been given but for me the guy on the right made this significantly less enjoyable
Could ONLY make it to 10:12 as the guy on the right is SUPER annoying with his remarks and 2 cent remarks to remain relevant. Ughh
Guy with the baseball hat, you're not funny. Stop interrupting.
Okurrr
Seriously, when the only response your getting is "sure," that's a good clue the jokes aren't landing
Downward
Dlink
To bad this guy smacking his lips and swallowing every two seconds in the mic makes this hard to listen to
