What strength legere reed the drummer might have been using? I guess the same strength legere reed as the bass and rhythm guitarists; don't you think? [lgh]
Whoa, I'm so impressed! For me it is quite a GREAT performance. There's about 1000 words I could use to describe what I've heard and what I've felt inside listening to this, but it's pointless - shortly speaking: brilliant improvisation!
It would be awesome if Legere would update this with time stamps bookmarks where the players were named .. they certainly deserve the recognition for their performance. Unfortunately I do not know them most of them by faces.
I am sometthing of an obsessive when it comes to Cantaloupe Island... and i must say I have heard dozens of versions of this golden nugget tune. The above version I awarded an 8 out of 10. I thought the funky off-beat angle worked well not least because all the musicians clearly feel and ride the groove seemlessly. Great stuff. Ravi.
Well I have to say this one is amongst my favourites now... they really put some rice and beans on this version ! But you might want to catch Freddiee Hubbard's guest appearances with H.Hancock. Just put put the above names as key words on your TH-cam search with Cantaloupe Island. If you can't find it let me know and I'll send you the exact link. Good Luck to you. Ravi from London in Australia
What cut of legere reeds were they playing? I can never get anything close to a jazz sound (or a pop sound) out of mine, even on really bright mouthpiece.
+edge60able Have you tried using the Studio Cut? I have the Classic Cut on my Jody Jazz Classic alto mouthpiece and get more of a classical sound with it. With other reeds, I get a jazzier/edgier/brighter sound. I think I'd get the same effect with the Studio Cut reed.
They are all very fine musicians but the first alto soloist and specially the superman tenor dude are light years a head of the others .... at least in my humble opinion....
They are the worst of the players to be honest, the best soloist is the second tenor player because he was actually hitting the changes to the tune and creatively while putting in minor 2-5-1s that lead back into the one instead of playing a bullshit pentatonic like the rest of the players or holding an altissimo note for 18 bars. The last guy is just a gimmick that gets peoples attention, as impressive as it is hes not a good saxophone player.
Music Bruh, if you actually knew the tune, there isn't a minor 2-5-1 in cantaloupe island. The piano is changing his voicing from time to time. You might be hearing a 2-5-1, but that is voice changing brother. Additionally, if anyone was hitting the chord changes, it was the trombone, Derek, and the alto sax. Just in case you need to know, here's the format for cantaloupe island: 4 bars of Gm7 or Gm11, 4 bars of Eb7alt or Eb7, 4 bars of Em7 or Esus7, 4 bars of Gm7 of Gm11. They aren't all using pentatonics either bro. The first tenor uses the whole tone scale, first alto has a chromatic conversion, and several times I hear harmonic minor. And if you aren't an idiot, you should hear that they are obviously using the Dorian mode quite a bit. Sure they use the pentatonic scale a lot, but they have every write to use. Kenny G mainly uses pentatonic scales but he makes more money than both of us, so don't call the pentatonic bullshit. Then, Derek is actually a fine sax player. During his improvisation, I'm hearing harmony perfectly fine. And his best boxing is for show, but he outlines the chordal tones during that too. Like bro, if you are going to critic, do it right.
Liam McMahan I know there isn’t minor 2-5-1s that’s why I said he was inserting them into the tune leading back to the F Min which is why you can clearly hear him playing a C7 altered going back into 1... also just cause someone plays a whole tone scale once over the entire tune doesn’t mean that the rest of the stuff he is playing is nonsense. Congrats you ran up and down a scale on the Db7 and then went straight back to pentatonic bullshit... if you’re going to criticize my critique then at least understand what I wrote in my comment before you decide to come at me... Derek is still very tasteless and just uses gimmicks for people to enjoy his playing no real commitment to the tune itself
Exactly! That's why I can't stand a lot of these smooth jazz players because they just dance and sometimes they can't even play. It really gets on my nerves to see all that dancing and not hear anything.
Why did the sound engineer get such thin sax sounds? Drums & bass were massively up in the mix. I wonder if he knew it was even a sax feature. Spoiled such fantastic playing
I'm a tenor sax player, and a trombone can be an absolute killer solo instrument. Maybe not the best in this instance, but search up trombone shorty and tell me what you see
It's musically appropriate. I mean drums don't have reeds but they're still here. Sure the trombonist isn't using any Lègere reeds but damn he sounds great with the ensemble
Brad Rambur, saxophonist wearing the Superman shirt, plays a lot. Congratulations!
Who knew Legere made Trombone reeds?! Amazing!!!
Jarrick Hillery 😆
saxed1616 very funny. I was at this jam session.
There mouthpiece
😂😂😂
What strength legere reed the drummer might have been using?
I guess the same strength legere reed as the bass and rhythm guitarists; don't you think? [lgh]
The musical communication between drummer and the soloists here is a clinic for all aspiring jazz jam drummers.
i liked the black guy's solo
Derek Brown absolutely KILLED it!
Whoa, I'm so impressed! For me it is quite a GREAT performance. There's about 1000 words I could use to describe what I've heard and what I've felt inside listening to this, but it's pointless - shortly speaking: brilliant improvisation!
Derek Brown rises above the rest... not only for his "effects" (beatboxing) but also for his bebop licks. He wasn't sickeningly "bluesy" or "smooth".
That bass is sick! Wow!
It would be awesome if Legere would update this with time stamps bookmarks where the players were named .. they certainly deserve the recognition for their performance. Unfortunately I do not know them most of them by faces.
Amazing! I like the trombone solo very much.
the last two tenors were fire beyond that they were amassing
I know! So good
Very inspiring to see such talented and imaginative young players. What a great line up
Derek Brown drive ici un repère incontesté de talents ! quel groove ! merci...c'est top
I got goosebumps when the trombone player initiated his solo. Later transitioning into the more funky, rhythmical playing. Amazing
I am sometthing of an obsessive when it comes to Cantaloupe Island... and i must say I have heard dozens of versions of this golden nugget tune. The above version I awarded an 8 out of 10. What are your favorite versions/covers of this tune?

It took me two years to discover that the name of the tenor saxophonist wearing the Superman shirt is Brad Rambur.
Derek est très impressionnant ! super
DEREK É O MELHOR... os outros... kkk
Good drummer!!
very good, pity that we do not have events like this here in Brazil
The guy with the pointy beard's playing reminds of Bennie Maupin's. Good stuff.
C'mon his sound is peanuts compared to Bennie's
I love you @Derek Brown :)
Parabéns para esse baterista! Sensacional.
a m a z i n g !
First solo is the best. Period
Tune up before the gig!
Drummer is a Bad Ass!!!!
Superman Derek!
Those reeds could of burned a house down after those solos
Great light Jazz jam, isn't it?
That silver finish with gold accents is like the best coloration you can get on saxs.
Absolutely not.
Very good
Tight band gets through the changes !
Bravissimo .
Diferencias enormes entre una joya musical y la basura de plastic pop del vecinillo Centennial.

Nice !!!!!!’
Derek Brown :)
i wish i could have a do over I sounded horrible!! The reed was a little stiff, but no excuses!!! Sorry guys!
Isn't the whole point of this to promote the reeds? maybe don't blame them
I was impressed by your flow and your power! A few squeaks but what the hell, still nice!
+William Ho well friend maybe I am wrong, but I thing that all sax player in this video are using legere reeds. all sounds realy bad for me.
My favorite was the trombone. By far the weakest player, but I love how he got his confidence and caught the groove!
Bravo trombone!
Derek brown is king, every one els was generic and boring, derek did something different and it was amazing
boi
jazz is never generic or boring
What cut of legere reeds were they playing? I can never get anything close to a jazz sound (or a pop sound) out of mine, even on really bright mouthpiece.
Derek brown is using signature cut legere reeds
+edge60able Have you tried using the Studio Cut? I have the Classic Cut on my Jody Jazz Classic alto mouthpiece and get more of a classical sound with it. With other reeds, I get a jazzier/edgier/brighter sound. I think I'd get the same effect with the Studio Cut reed.
+MrSaxmanJones Sorry, I haven't ever used the studio cut reeds
They are all very fine musicians but the first alto soloist and specially the superman tenor dude are light years a head of the others .... at least in my humble opinion....
Mauriciovideomaker haha humble... :)
Mauriciovideomaker the final tenor is the best in "my humble opinion"

Miles Barnett exactly
Exactly! That's why I can't stand a lot of these smooth jazz players because they just dance and sometimes they can't even play. It really gets on my nerves to see all that dancing and not hear anything.
The one thing I'll give him is that the setup to his solo wasn't like the others'. Other than that, this kid thinks he's Eric Darius or something.
Why did the sound engineer get such thin sax sounds? Drums & bass were massively up in the mix. I wonder if he knew it was even a sax feature. Spoiled such fantastic playing
Goddamn 4:03 is fire
What is the name of the one wearing the cap?

Too many cooks
Great talent and effort from everyone! but I honestly don't think a Trombone is a good solo instrument...
I'm a tenor sax player, and a trombone can be an absolute killer solo instrument. Maybe not the best in this instance, but search up trombone shorty and tell me what you see
+1 on that reply. Alto/Bari player here, the trombone can be amazing as a solo instrument.
Go look up Bart van leir
Check out Fred Wesley as well.
The one that start playing at 7:30 use a can reed…
Студенты. ))
???????????
Bad gig🤘🤔
Wow, that was garbage!
Thank you for this comment
Herbie Hancock would be pleased
Why is there a trombone?
variety?
Maybe but this jam was for a woodwinds company that makes REEDS.
It's musically appropriate. I mean drums don't have reeds but they're still here. Sure the trombonist isn't using any Lègere reeds but damn he sounds great with the ensemble
The last guy was the best, he's the only one with a half-decent sound... until the beatboxing bullsh**
So true
smh...
Plastic sound on saxes.
Anyway, players are really good.
