- Here is one of several tracks from Studio Jams Episode #52, taped "On The Road" at Regent University's TV production studios in Virginia Beach, Virginia. A fresh take on Billy Cobham's classic "Red Baron." It features Peter White on guitar, Mike Cheney on bass, Everette Harp on saxophone, Gregg Karukas on keyboards and, from Hampton Roads, drummer Jae Sinnett. For more on the series, go to www.StudioJams.com.
OMG, those guys are true groove machines. So nice and subtle... It's great to be able to hear musicians listening to each other, letting the ego aside.
Thanks for that nectar for the ears!!!
Pure funk, absolutely beautiful. I love you guys. God bless you. And yes Homer, that is music!! IF people raised their kids with this type of music, there would be more geniuses. So cool.
genius cuz of listening to jazz ? rofl ...
@@Yourmom-dd3fh well not everyone would be a genius, just look at you.
Everette Harp's solo - he builds its so tastefully and patiently in the beginning. Setting it up with the style of early Grover Washington improvs. A hint of Mr Magic or perhaps Not Yet (from a Secret Place CD).
I am sure he wasnt going for it, and EH has his own fantastic style and phrasing (I am a huge fan). But the laid back patient bluesy solo nonetheless evoked these great Grover memories for me. That's kinda what music is about, right? Completely enjoyed this tune, thanks : )
Definitely paying homage to Grover in the beginning😊
Gentlemen . . You are definitely out of this world wow wow wow 👏👏👏👏
great session... Bass Player shows what the foundation is all about😉👍
It makes me feel good to see that bonafide badass like Everette is in fact human and still has to figure out the riffs.
Great dynamics, offering space for each other, very nice perfomance, thank you!
Really fun.....👍🏼
Wow it’s really Mr. Sklar! Massive fan!
I’ve found him in the wild!
Great original bassline, Mr Sklar 👏🎩
1 word...YES
This version is great !...
yoooh...music for the soul!!! Toooo Lit!!!
Ambitious piece of music to cover, and my all time favorite! You made it very clean and airy. I´m impressed with your live recoring! Well done. :)
Great music
Magnifique
Awesome, i am from chile 🇨🇱🇨🇱 soy sudamericano y es genial tmb soy músico...
This is one great groove. Heard a version by a guitar led quartet at a Jazz Evening at the Quay Arts Centre, Newport Isle of Wight England last evening. Awesome.
these guys are so freaking good... Mike Cheney & his bass.. damn wish he would do a solo..
I appreciate your comment, but solos are overrated for bassplayers in my opinion. Would rather make a groove for the other players.
@@michaelcheney1555 spoken like a professional as always and humble too. My comment was because you play so well and some of us who are fans are screaming tor more.. u have no idea how many times i have heard this song because of your groove.. but damn just to be in the same room with the guys you played with in this vid... i would faint.. God Bless you and keep you all safe. Your response made my day.
@AI It's all that bass! Elixr strings and a Fender active deluxe precision bass.It growls coming out of the case. Of course, Steve Peppos, the audio engineer, added his magic.
Phenomenal playing
Oh god, seeing this makes me feel SO much better right now. My music instructor has given me this song on bass, and that break is killing me! /sigh keep practicing
Solarfly - agree! When this song was called and I heard that line played I'm thinking, " crash and burn or just make it simple". Have never even heard the tune before that moment I had to make the decision to just stay out of the way. Realizing you have one take to play tunes you've never heard in front of rolling cameras resulting in musical peers who will no doubt critique every note you play? Yeah, a bit frightening.
I enjoyed your version of this. I'm also a bass player and I am not a fan of bass players who "over play" just because they can. I say keep it tasty and know when to get out of the way. I just found Studio Jams and I'm really enjoying it. Keep up the good work.
I know this Billy Cobham tune so well now, that the mistake in the practice bothers me, because they miss the line by a beat. It just goes right after the last "A# A G A A# G"
whooohooo love it!
Sweet. THANKS!
Eleven out of ten.
I've seen peter White perform live a few times... great player!
The version of this song by Marcus Miller made me want to learn the bass...
nice. except it's G7 > C7 not Gm7>C7...But I played it wrong for 30 years too...but swapping the Gm7 for Gdom7 opens up way more options than just dorian all day long. imho.
Jeremy Postaer you are right.
Fantastic playing.
Is that Everette Harp on sax?
It's pretty cool.
Fantastic!
The time stamp is my lucky number...shit b deep af yo
Bravo ...
suuuuuppppeeeerrr.....fillings

Uplifting.
Nice one

Top margo top...
este saxofonista não tem comentários.
Esta padre pero donde quedo la bateria estilo cobham.
Loved the bass playing on this track, maybe just a few unnecessary slap parts, but it was lovely
How many?
Dear sir , just wanted to know what mouth peace is that and the sax .If you would like to share it I appreciate it . You sounded great
9:18 Stevie Wonder I wish bassline
What's his sax model? Sounds astonishing
It looks like its a Dave Guardala, by the script on the side of the bell. I believe the true Dave Guardala saxophones are not around anymore. Read up on Dave Guardala and you will know why!
Beautiful tone Everette gets on it, isn't it?!?
It’s could be Cannonball sax
Hey guys. Does anyone know which model of sax is the player using?
Who is playing guitar?
Peter White
! Je Je Je N I C E !
Seria bom que colocasse a legenda...👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
which typ of Alesis-Piano is it?
its missin the natural funk and vibe of Tommy Bolin...Nobody did it better !
Tommy Bolin OWNS this tune!
TOP
Is that a weltklang horn ?
oh mannn...
I have the same bass but not the same groove
anyone knows what chords are played in this song? and the scale? i would be very thankful, i want to play this song :)
Sure, it's based on a G7 - C7 progression.
The theme itself is played on G Dorian mode (minor pentatonic plus a major second and a major sixth), but you can also use the minor pentatonic or the myxolydian scale.
Thank you very much! What about the last part of the melody? Fo they change chords or they are the same?
Ah sorry forgot about this part, they do change the chords once, at the end of the phrase : it does F/Eb (so basically a F7 chord, but with the 7th at the bass) then Eb/Db
+Sebdar thank you! :)
+Sebdar
Aah like it. Got to go practiSe - as the English man may say, with an "S" and not a "C" [as in the Eng. noun, and the Amer. verb and noun]
Just kidding!
What kind of bass is that?
deluxe precision by fender with a "PJ" pickup configuration

waw

Beatiful, just ruined by those feet and shoes at 7:50
Hey guys, is that Craig Robinson on Sax?
Everette Harp
George St Pierre on keyboard!!!
Sax has a weird sound setup .. plenty of reverb

On the original track the bass player doesn't play the complete figure you guys are referencing either. Just part of it but the 16th note triplet is avoided. It's tricky in terms of fingering. The original track has the bass player getting to a point in the figure then playing quarter notes. The bass player in this clip never heard the piece before nor is a seasoned "jazz" player. Considering he did an excellent job. It was also the first time all of us played together. I'm the drummer.
muy bien tocada la batería con el bajo :) GRACIAS.
Patricio Mendez verdugo bien trambolico eh? Jajaja
Well done. I really like how you kept it loose and laid back when everyone tried to pick up speed at the head.
they play the theme kinda wrong too, on the third da-da-daradam in the theme you're supposed to skip the dam
@Jae Sinnett Hi, Jae. I used to listen to your jazz radio show all the time when I was in Virginia Beach. You are an excellent drummer, and the way you all came together on this track with no prior experience just speaks volumes to your talent and skill. Well done, sir.
I enjoy watching this and remember the session well. I drove Everette Harp and Gregg Karukas in to the session from Norfolk and watched as they all crafted the collaboration. Was very happy to be a fly on the wall (2:20.). TE used my friend Robert Klages to shoot some of this footage and he died of an unexpected heart attack before this episode was released.
A definite 10 on the Funk-O-Meter. Be sure to use headphones to hear the beautiful mix, the Rhodes, the P bass, gorgeous snare drum sound, etc.

These 12 minutes felt like 3 minutes! Amazing!
Excellent. Love Everette Harp.
same. great tone and ideas . love his alto playing especially . really full and bright tone which takes work to achieve on the alto
9:18 That I Wish bassline well placed ahah
Come on
🎷🎷
Good spot. I wouldn't have noticed that if you hadn't pointed it out.
oh SHIIIT
Once again I find myself living under a rock! This was/is simply magnificent. That groove is liquid velvet! Wonderful. And to @Jae Sinnett, the respect you show Billy Cobham with your playing is amazing. Thank you so much.
A tremendous Sonor Designer drum kit -- and the great Jae Sinnett on top of it!
NOT a Designer but a Steve Smith anniversary kit
Awesome musicians! Peter White on the acoustic is just plain great! They’re all good! Play that sax, bro!
This is a very nice...arrangement. I'm a guitarist, and PW kills it. As does everyone!
Dig the understated drums and well, all parts.
I am just starting to have fun grooving with my alto, wud love someday to get into a pocket like these fellas! Wow
Mike Lozica
keep playing! if you're out of school look to a community college and see if they have a music departmet and jazz combo. i play at my local school once a week. great way to keep your chops up. look at downloading irealpro on your iphone or smartphone. it's $10, but well worth it to play with backing tracks of a lot of jazz tunes. a real good tool to practice with when at home.
Im not being sarcastic, but love that accoustic guitar player, love the adition of the effects and the notes you play.
Can someone confirm that the original was composed of just 2 V7 chords (G7 > C7 or something like that) and I’m not really hearing that in this version?
Excellent musical communication between individuals. Nice editing. C2019RWBEEink
Bravo guys. Tough song but, you guys GOT IT. Nice Groove. Bravo. Tommy Bolin would be proud and Billy too.
I love this the guys are really teaching and probably didn't know it
2:48 That harmony used in all jazzed up and nowhere to go is my soft spot...
You guys should record this. Nice one.
Jose',
It's a Fender Active Deluxe Precision Bass.
Thanks. Active then, I guess.

Jazz band cooking with flavor and love 💙. It doesn't get better than this.
You all honor Tommy , sure he would be pleased. So much talent here. Cheers !
It´s sureley much more Billy Cobham the gang is honoring; or do I dought?
Great sound engineering on these videos. I
Thank you!
Watching you guys play really gives me an idea of the type of people I want to play with if and when I do join a band.
Thank you.

I used to see Gregg with Tim Eyermann (RIP) in DC as a teenager. What an inspiration East Coast Offering was.
Back in the 80s I saw Everett 20+ times in Houston. 1st with Scott Gertner then with franchise. He was the best!

What a great jam, indeed. Sadly not one single mention in the comments of the great Billy Cobham. Without him, this jam wouldn’t exist.
Credit where credits due.
I like that so much 06:05 :3
