OMG, those guys are true groove machines. So nice and subtle... It's great to be able to hear musicians listening to each other, letting the ego aside. Thanks for that nectar for the ears!!!
Guitar in every part sensational, even when he is filling some gaps in the keyboard solo, perfection pure what Peter did. Bass super nice, solid, slappin here and there at. Right time, also in keyboard solo, two times not in time with sax, but - super strong! Keyboarder excellent work - big wow, did the carpet at every time! . Harp - better than sanborn. This tone, phrasations, soul in every note- easy fliying fingers super smart how he gets the note at its point and give it easily away, gets the other one, incredible. Drums - solid solid solid, great. Maybe even so good, like every version from Master Cobham. Thx for loading up. Hearing this song once a month.
I enjoy watching this and remember the session well. I drove Everette Harp and Gregg Karukas in to the session from Norfolk and watched as they all crafted the collaboration. Was very happy to be a fly on the wall (2:20.). TE used my friend Robert Klages to shoot some of this footage and he died of an unexpected heart attack before this episode was released.
Once again I find myself living under a rock! This was/is simply magnificent. That groove is liquid velvet! Wonderful. And to @Jae Sinnett, the respect you show Billy Cobham with your playing is amazing. Thank you so much.
Pure funk, absolutely beautiful. I love you guys. God bless you. And yes Homer, that is music!! IF people raised their kids with this type of music, there would be more geniuses. So cool.
Everette Harp's solo - he builds its so tastefully and patiently in the beginning. Setting it up with the style of early Grover Washington improvs. A hint of Mr Magic or perhaps Not Yet (from a Secret Place CD). I am sure he wasnt going for it, and EH has his own fantastic style and phrasing (I am a huge fan). But the laid back patient bluesy solo nonetheless evoked these great Grover memories for me. That's kinda what music is about, right? Completely enjoyed this tune, thanks : )
What a great jam, indeed. Sadly not one single mention in the comments of the great Billy Cobham. Without him, this jam wouldn’t exist. Credit where credits due.
keep playing! if you're out of school look to a community college and see if they have a music departmet and jazz combo. i play at my local school once a week. great way to keep your chops up. look at downloading irealpro on your iphone or smartphone. it's $10, but well worth it to play with backing tracks of a lot of jazz tunes. a real good tool to practice with when at home.
On the original track the bass player doesn't play the complete figure you guys are referencing either. Just part of it but the 16th note triplet is avoided. It's tricky in terms of fingering. The original track has the bass player getting to a point in the figure then playing quarter notes. The bass player in this clip never heard the piece before nor is a seasoned "jazz" player. Considering he did an excellent job. It was also the first time all of us played together. I'm the drummer.
@Jae Sinnett Hi, Jae. I used to listen to your jazz radio show all the time when I was in Virginia Beach. You are an excellent drummer, and the way you all came together on this track with no prior experience just speaks volumes to your talent and skill. Well done, sir.
This is one great groove. Heard a version by a guitar led quartet at a Jazz Evening at the Quay Arts Centre, Newport Isle of Wight England last evening. Awesome.
Oh god, seeing this makes me feel SO much better right now. My music instructor has given me this song on bass, and that break is killing me! /sigh keep practicing
Solarfly - agree! When this song was called and I heard that line played I'm thinking, " crash and burn or just make it simple". Have never even heard the tune before that moment I had to make the decision to just stay out of the way. Realizing you have one take to play tunes you've never heard in front of rolling cameras resulting in musical peers who will no doubt critique every note you play? Yeah, a bit frightening.
I enjoyed your version of this. I'm also a bass player and I am not a fan of bass players who "over play" just because they can. I say keep it tasty and know when to get out of the way. I just found Studio Jams and I'm really enjoying it. Keep up the good work.
I know this Billy Cobham tune so well now, that the mistake in the practice bothers me, because they miss the line by a beat. It just goes right after the last "A# A G A A# G"
@@michaelcheney1555 spoken like a professional as always and humble too. My comment was because you play so well and some of us who are fans are screaming tor more.. u have no idea how many times i have heard this song because of your groove.. but damn just to be in the same room with the guys you played with in this vid... i would faint.. God Bless you and keep you all safe. Your response made my day.
@AI It's all that bass! Elixr strings and a Fender active deluxe precision bass.It growls coming out of the case. Of course, Steve Peppos, the audio engineer, added his magic.

Wow it’s really Mr. Sklar! Massive fan!
I’ve found him in the wild!
Great original bassline, Mr Sklar 👏🎩

Jazz band cooking with flavor and love 💙. It doesn't get better than this.
Great dynamics, offering space for each other, very nice perfomance, thank you!
These 12 minutes felt like 3 minutes! Amazing!
Bravo guys. Tough song but, you guys GOT IT. Nice Groove. Bravo. Tommy Bolin would be proud and Billy too.
Awesome musicians! Peter White on the acoustic is just plain great! They’re all good! Play that sax, bro!
Excellent. Love Everette Harp.
same. great tone and ideas . love his alto playing especially . really full and bright tone which takes work to achieve on the alto
A tremendous Sonor Designer drum kit -- and the great Jae Sinnett on top of it!
NOT a Designer but a Steve Smith anniversary kit
Gentlemen . . You are definitely out of this world wow wow wow 👏👏👏👏
great session... Bass Player shows what the foundation is all about😉👍
Dig the understated drums and well, all parts.
2:48 That harmony used in all jazzed up and nowhere to go is my soft spot...
A definite 10 on the Funk-O-Meter. Be sure to use headphones to hear the beautiful mix, the Rhodes, the P bass, gorgeous snare drum sound, etc.
How cool is that!!!
Back in the 80s I saw Everett 20+ times in Houston. 1st with Scott Gertner then with franchise. He was the best!
what the hell its all so musical, nobody's noodling. great stuff! great video format!
Just funky for no reason at all... ❤🔥❤🔥❤🔥❤🔥❤🔥
I used to see Gregg with Tim Eyermann (RIP) in DC as a teenager. What an inspiration East Coast Offering was.
Im not being sarcastic, but love that accoustic guitar player, love the adition of the effects and the notes you play.

Definitely paying homage to Grover in the beginning😊
I love this the guys are really teaching and probably didn't know it
It makes me feel good to see that bonafide badass like Everette is in fact human and still has to figure out the riffs.
This is a very nice...arrangement. I'm a guitarist, and PW kills it. As does everyone!
You guys should record this. Nice one.
So beautiful, all songs top so good, congratulations end much more vídeos...

Patricio Mendez verdugo bien trambolico eh? Jajaja
Well done. I really like how you kept it loose and laid back when everyone tried to pick up speed at the head.
they play the theme kinda wrong too, on the third da-da-daradam in the theme you're supposed to skip the dam

Fantastic groove.
You all honor Tommy , sure he would be pleased. So much talent here. Cheers !
It´s sureley much more Billy Cobham the gang is honoring; or do I dought?
Ambitious piece of music to cover, and my all time favorite! You made it very clean and airy. I´m impressed with your live recoring! Well done. :)

Phenomenal playing
So wonderfull !!!!!
Fantastic playing.
awesome really awesome !!! :) this is real music .
these guys are so freaking good... Mike Cheney & his bass.. damn wish he would do a solo..
I appreciate your comment, but solos are overrated for bassplayers in my opinion. Would rather make a groove for the other players.

G7 is nowhere to be found on *this video/version.
Although the ORIGINAL =
basically G7 C7
BUT when Gil Goldstein (I studied with him during my PhD at NYU) played with Cobham in ‘78, Gil (keyboard) played
basically Gmin7 C7
of course, on this video they’re incorporating chordal extensions (mostly diatonic to the
iimin7 V7) e.g., C9 C13 etc.
on the *original after the unison closing riff
= (you could think in “poly-chords”)
the “Eb” chord = A over Eb (Eb7b9#11)
the “Db” chord = Eb over Db (Db13#11)
(if I remember correctly, that is what George Duke played …
which is close to Cobham’s original)
But I do enjoy this performance (Studio Jams)
I wish you health and joy
and many more rapturous musical moments.
