As much as her being locked in the fridge was a death Sentence, it ended up saving trillian. The octalus hunted by sensing movement. She was unconscious in a sealed and soundproofed environment. My only thought on this film, which I love as does my husband is this. Clearly it. Started grabbing passengers when they ran out towards the lifeboats. Why didn’t more passengers hide up in the higher decks of the ship. Some could have hidden in storerooms or areas where there were lots of background noise. I would have hidden with my husband in a linen store. We have been on a cruise before. No pipes or toilets and linen could be used to insulate the room so as long as your quiet there wouldn’t be any movement.

Hey Roanoke! So glad that you got to this movie! Fun fact: Each of the mercenaries can each be linked to a deadly sin. Vivo (Swole) is Gluttony, T. Ray (aka Aussie) is Wrath, Mamooli (aka Ladykiller) is Lust, etc...
I absolutely love Deep Rising! I saw it in the theater when I was 17. Yeah, that one girl (the mechanic) was super cute. She was in a lot of stuff around that time.
This movie is a classic for me. Kinda holds a special place. My mother introduced me to this movie as a Young man. Definitely. One of my faves , and i'm so glad that you finally get a chance to talk about it. I'm currently at work on my last delivery 22 minutes to It's location so i'm all ears .
I saw this as a kid when it first came out and to this day, the mid-digested Billy and Hanover not taking the chance to off himself absolutely haunt me.
Deep rising is such a great film. I haven't seen it for years but can't wait to watch it again. And yes you can lose at Solitair, you can run out of moves you can make.
I just made a comment about "The Relic" I knew someone else was going to mention it. The 90's had the best horror films that including some of the best actors and storylines.
I heard somewhere this was intended to set up a new King Kong movie at the time. Ergo, the island they were on at the end was Skull Island, and the roar was from Kong himself.
10:15 I think it was established that they're already a couple. Also, fun fact: Joey is the same guy who plays Benny in the first Mummy movie, and both movies are directed by the same guy too.
Absolutely loved this movie as a kid, from start to perfect finish. I only wish I could have seen it in theaters when it first came out. None of the trailers gave away what the creature was, so that thrill of discovery would have been all the greater on the big screen.
Fun fact, Joey originally didn't live, but the test audiences loved him so much, they changed the ending, and in the scene where the ship explodes, they digitally added a surf board to explain where Joey got it from.
Roanoke, I’m going to correct you. That is not a plasma torch, that is an oxyacetylene torch. The main reason she isn’t doing anything with it is because she has the neutral flame (the very tiny inside cone) way too far away from what she’s trying to cut. However, she shouldn’t be using any form of cutting tool it that weather, whether it be oxyacetylene or plasma. One uses a very very flammable gas that is under a lot of pressure, the other uses a shit ton of electricity. It seems like the people who made the movie have no concept of firearms, or welding/cutting.
I feel like the thousand round guns were a lazy excuse to prevent nerds from calling out the lack of reloading but instead opens a whole other can of worms for nerds to call out.
The movie is about an alien virus that takes over machinery. This one is about a cephalopod with tentacles that have mouths and there own digestive tract in them
8:30 to put that into perspective, my buddy's ULR .50 cal weighs 32lbs unloaded, and there's no way you can shoulder that thing without at least a monopod
The worst part is that Billy was swallowed and partially digested, spat out then promptly re-swallowed to finish being digested, like bruh, put me down at that point
There have been scenes of this movie living rent free in my head since I was a kid. I never could piece it together enough to find the movie as I got older. Thank you for this.

As far as the island and the end. There was supposed to be more movies but got scrapped. The island is supposed to be like Kong island or the island of dr Moreau
Thank you for finally explaining what the captain was talking about when he was trying to describe the monster. I could never make out what he was saying.
I think I listened to a directors commentary, but I’m pretty sure the island was supposed to be the Island of Monsters from Greek mythology, and the creature was Scylla and/or Charybdis that guarded its shores. Hence why the ship was called the Argonautica, clear reference to the Greek myth of the Argonaut.
I love this movie. It's just fun. Sure, it has flaws, but it more than makes up for that. The one that makes me chuckle is their ammo is described as caseless, so all of that brass being sprayed everywhere is apparently decorative.
As a German I remember seeing that movie back in the days in the cinema, but it was called "octalus" here, also since it was the 90ties some naughty bits were cut out of several media since they were deemed to gruesome for the youth to see, so yeah the half eaten dude in the thumbnail I hardly can remember (yeah he was spät out of that tentacle but him standing up again was most certainly not in the version I saw, that I would remember) but to be honest except the mouth on the tentacles the story I had forgotten ... My point being, some silly cuts where more noticeable especially in video games, to ensure the titles could be played in Germany, Resident Evil 3 for example had the blood of the zombies colored grey, what not that bad tbh but they also blinked away if they were defeated thus eliminating the horror of not knowing if the zomby will rise again ... Strangely enough in RE4 the enemies dissolve now as well in uncut Version ... On the other side RE4 isn't a game worthy of that title anyway but I digress Other games like the original PS1 RE2 were right out banned, the reason seems to be you were able to "kill" humans, allegedly the Brad Vickers, even though you had to get to the police station without using health items or reloading to get to him iirc
It's just a fun monster movie, that's all it needs to be. Treat Williams is awesome. Legendary quotes like "Now what?" & "Chick with the muscles". We also got Sagat, Kano & Jean Grey. Stephen Sommers knows how to make a popcorn movie like The Mummy, so enjoy the ride while Jerry Goldsmith's score plays throughout the movie.
You should a big video on the biology of Peter Jackson’s 2005 King Kong Skull Island. The filmmakers put an incredible amount of effort into making a believable Island that time forgot. Dinosaur remnants is just the start. There is a giant eel/piranha/ ANGLER FISH thing that lives in the swamps of the island too.
I really liked this movie, which sadly didn't get the recognition it deserves. Another movie that doesn't get the recognition I feel it deserves, also from the 90's, is the movie, "Virus", which was adapted from the comic by the same name, has a good cast including Alec Baldwin & Jamie Lee Curtis, also takes place on a big ship in the open sea, and also features monsters. The effects are mostly physical with some stop motion puppetry, as this was made in early 90 which hadn't yet perfected the art of CGI, but I personally appreciate practical affects. Some people hated it but I loved it.
Only a few good movie lovers remember "Virus"! You can't beat that plot. I remember "Leviathan" which cast Ernie Hudson from "Ghostbusters", and Hector Elizondo from "Beverly Hills Cop 3". These kinds of 90's horror movies had incredible storylines, and characters. This is why these movies can be rewatched over and over and enjoyed the same way as when we enjoyed them in the 90's. Deep Star Six was a good one as well but not like "Deep Rising" and "Leviathan". These movies got it all going for them. Great storylines, a talented cast, a mix of horror and comedic scenes and perfect special affects of that time. I must add "Relic" was another good one.
I actually recommend this movie today in the Discord and shortly after you post it, talk about great timing. The ending of the film was supposed to be them ending up on Skull Island but the sequel was never greenlit so we never got that but it would have been awesome to see.
As a mechanic in training myself, I for one fully endorse your coverage of vehicles on this channel. Which makes me wonder, would you ever consider doing something like "The Anatomy of a 98 Chevelle." Or "The mechanics of The Batmobile" I think it would be neat to see you break down vehicles the way you do the various unholy abominations on this channel, like the angler fish.
Watched this movie on TV when I was a kid. Scared the hell out of me. Especially the scene where the captain gets eaten. Fun fact about the guns used, it’s a fusion of a mini-gun and a Calico pistol. I absolutely love Calicos. Their design is very “unique”. If you showed one to a random person they’d probably immediately think it’s a toy laser gun. Their .22 pistol has a 100 round capacity drum magazine. You can make the argument that while the gun itself cannot have a feasible 1000 round mag, it is not difficult at all for one person carry 1000 rounds of ammunition.
18:33 THANK YOU for pointing out the glaring issues that shooting sequences in movies often have, is that no one wears hearing protection . Everyone in that vicinity would get tinnitus for days.
If you notice deep water fish have three adaptations for hunting, fang teeth, jaw that can swallow and hold prey, or ability to shoot their jaw the angler fish, gulper eel, and goblin shark
yeah, it WAS meant to be Skull Island and the thing marching to them was probably a T-Rex. Had Deep Rising blown up the box office, instead of flopped, apparently the director was gonna be allowed to helm a 90's/early 2000's King Kong remake set in modern times with Deep Rising being a backdoor prequel of sorts. So technically Deep Rising takes place in a Kong-like world... probably meant to be a stealthy way to set up the idea of giant monsters existing in this universe.
Roanoke, me boi. I, too, was deeply saddened when the lady repairing the boar was instantly dragged off and gone. It's a part of film that always sat wrong with me throughout the ywars. My second regret was mixing this up with Mercury Rising at the video rental store and finding myself exposed to weapons grade levels of Autismol that rivaled the kid from Jurassic World and the other one from The Predator. Reading the plot explains the plot.
Also, regarding the ending, this was intended to be Skull Island and establish a tie-in franchise with King Kong but they forgot to make a good movie so it didn't work out.

Hey Roanoke, I wanted to do a little digging on "trauma bonding" since it seemed like a really interesting topic and found out something you should probably know. Apparently despite the term seeming like it means a bond between two people through a traumatic event it actually refers to a bond from someone being abused to their abuser. I can't seem to find a concrete term for defining what you're trying to use it for, but I've seen "stress bonding" and "survivor bonding" being suggested as potential terms. Stress bonding seems to have more credibility seeing as it's a term used for when rabbits huddle together when exposed to a common stressor. Hope this helps
Octopus has 5 official plural terms... It depends on where you are speaking English! Octopus, octopuses, octopi, octopods, and octopodes. Octopus is just easiest for everyone to get and not fight over, lol. This reason alone gives these cephalopods a huge ups in my mind!
Cephalopods rule! I used to volunteer at the Invert House of the National Zoo (RIP Invert House...) And I adore cephalopods! They absolutely recognize people who they frequently see, and if they don't trust you? They will definitely mess with you. And it's beautiful to see. 🤣
Crazy I’ve been really hoping you’d do this since I found the page, scrolled through the entire feed and was surprised when you didn’t do it yet. this is one I’ve been waiting for ^-^
The plural of words in English usually come from how the language we borrowed the word from usually pluralizes words. In this case, "octopodes" would be the most correct, but "octopi", "octopus" and "octopuses" are all fine. Etymology is fun.
This is one of my favorite movies. So disappointed there was never a sequel. Now with Treat Williams gone, we'll never get it. And never give up warning people about the dangers of the Angler Fish.
There is a remake of "Twister" coming out starring Glen Powell. I never thought they would remake it without Bill Paxton but hollywood won't hesitate to find another actor that emulates the former star actor. Maybe someone will do the same for "Deep Rising", and or "Leviathin". They're still making "The Thing" sequels. I know what you mean...some actors and films like Treat Williams and "Deep Rising" can't be imitated without the original actor.
Also, deep sea gigantism reduces the amount of sustenance to live due to fewer organisms to feast upon. The larger the organism, the slower its metabolic rate is.
One of my favorite monster flics from the late 90s. Great video as always Roanoke, and as terrifying as the Octolus is, I am once again reminded of the even more horrifying "Nervous System Man" residing in my meatsuit!
For what i’ve read in an article, the island scene at the ending was supposed to be a prequel to a King Kong remake, it was skull island and the thing that is rushing through the jungle was supposedly Kong himself. The next movie was supposed to be titled as “Kong Rising”.
That island at the end is skull Island. This movie was actually supposed to be the start of a new king kong series but it got held up in production limbo until peter Jackson got the rights to kong and made his 2005 kong movie. So that was actually king kong making his way to them through the forest. Too bad we never got to see how this king kong would have ended up.
Deep Sea Rising was supposed to have a sequel called Kong Rising because they wanted to open up a monster-verse series, but since it kind of bombed, they cancelled the sequel.
the only movie that could traumatize me when I was a kid. Not even Alien's chestburster scene scared me as bad as this movie. I couldn't even finish the movie and was only able to finish it years later when I was in highschool.

@@mikeoas The problem though is the tentacles were described by Atherton and Canton as being 'everywhere'. When the mercs entered the bridge, some of the windows were smashed.
I loved this movie! Totally unrealistic, but it was fun to watch! Who doesn't want a hand carried mini gun with unlimited ammo, zero recoil, and no battery!

Loved this monster film growing up
When tf did Treat Williams pass? I seriously had no idea. Anytime I hear about a celebrity passing away, it's 99% of the time one of those Celeb Death Hoaxes. Like how Betty White was constantly dying every other week for years, lol.
Shit, I didn't realize he was dead and always held out hope for more to this story.
Sometime last year. While he was riding his motorcycle, another vehicle collided with him. He later passed away at the hospital.@@FilthTribeFTP
@@FilthTribeFTP he sadly died last June in a motorcycle accident in Vermont, when a car (or 4-wheel drive) hit him head-on

The first time I saw deep rising I was about 14, it was a Saturday and this was the super late night movie. I watched it alone, didn't catch the name but got it stuck in my head for years until finally running across it again at random.
Now its my go to "you need to watch this movie" movie for anyone 😊❤
Hey Roanoke! So glad that you got to this movie! Fun fact: Each of the mercenaries can each be linked to a deadly sin. Vivo (Swole) is Gluttony, T. Ray (aka Aussie) is Wrath, Mamooli (aka Ladykiller) is Lust, etc...
Source?
I absolutely love Deep Rising! I saw it in the theater when I was 17. Yeah, that one girl (the mechanic) was super cute. She was in a lot of stuff around that time.
This movie is a classic for me. Kinda holds a special place. My mother introduced me to this movie as a Young man. Definitely. One of my faves , and i'm so glad that you finally get a chance to talk about it. I'm currently at work on my last delivery 22 minutes to It's location so i'm all ears .
I also like this movie
It has that later- ~ late-‘90’s vibe that can’t be recreated, from a time I was actually excited about attending the cinema to see these things.
what's with moms and traumatising us? mine showed me alien and the thing at age 8.
I saw this as a kid when it first came out and to this day, the mid-digested Billy and Hanover not taking the chance to off himself absolutely haunt me.
YES! literally gave me nightmares as a kid and ive been looking for this damn movie ever since i became an adult lmfao
I’m starting to think Roanoke is deathly afraid of the ocean, but idk where I’m getting that vibe from
totally hear you, i guess he had a goldfish that died as a kid and got flushed or something
There are angler fish in there, he has a vendetta against those fish
Because the ocean is fucking scary.
Uh… obviously what he’s saying indicates that he’s afriad; are u blonde?
We may never know. Too deep for us, and he may never attempt rising to overcome it.
Deep rising is such a great film. I haven't seen it for years but can't wait to watch it again. And yes you can lose at Solitair, you can run out of moves you can make.
Deep Rising is really one of my favorite 90s and movies of all time including The Relic. Phantoms, and Virus
I just made a comment about "The Relic" I knew someone else was going to mention it. The 90's had the best horror films that including some of the best actors and storylines.
Affleck was the bomb in Phantoms.
The relic, phantoms, leviathan ,virus, deep star six ,the abyss some of my other favs too
Relic and Virus
Love those movies! RIP Sizemore and Sutherland
@@Haplo699g lmao. Nice reference
Looks like he was:
ON THE WRONG SIDE OF THE RIVER??😂
I'll see myself out lol
Yeah it was established pretty early in the plot before they get to the cruise ship.
I was wondering why he looked so familiar.
Absolutely loved this movie as a kid, from start to perfect finish. I only wish I could have seen it in theaters when it first came out. None of the trailers gave away what the creature was, so that thrill of discovery would have been all the greater on the big screen.
Its not a Roanoke video without the Angler fish catching strays occasionally.
Fun fact, Joey originally didn't live, but the test audiences loved him so much, they changed the ending, and in the scene where the ship explodes, they digitally added a surf board to explain where Joey got it from.
Joey later on (or the actor) later went on to be Benny in The mummy and eaten by bugs.

The sudden cutoff of these jokes always get me good.
I bet those guys would have LOVED The Merchant! 🤣"Welcome Stranger, here's your Rocket Launcher!"
"Not enough cash!"
"whachya buying?"
Ha, Resident Evil 4 reference.
I can totaly see the merchant just being on this sinking ship for no reason
Super sharp loud noises like gunfire in confined spaces with no ear protection means tinnitus. Its your ear always ringing.
This movie is tied with Virus as my favorite horror film set on an abandoned ship. Loved how creative the monster's design is.
This movie has one of the most horrific deaths I’ve ever seen! I’d rather eat a bullet rather than go through any of this!
Which? The digested alive ones? The Fold-Spindle Mutilation ones?
The worst part is that Billy was swallowed and partially digested, spat out then promptly re-swallowed to finish being digested, like bruh, put me down at that point
There have been scenes of this movie living rent free in my head since I was a kid. I never could piece it together enough to find the movie as I got older. Thank you for this.
Not gonna lie, you are probably the only youtuber I tune in to watch a lot. You make me want to learn even without the explaining of movies your videogame content going over their biology, viology (hope I spelt that right), and how something could be like that and evolve that way is the most entertaining and mind gripping thing ever, it keeps my attention even off my adhd meds,
Thank you for being the most educational youtuber I watch!
Keep up the amazing work you do as well!!
As far as the island and the end. There was supposed to be more movies but got scrapped. The island is supposed to be like Kong island or the island of dr Moreau
As I've gotten older I don't go past the ocean drop-off and forests are a no go.
27:30 “ aim directly for his crooked brow and look him straight in the eye”
Thank you for finally explaining what the captain was talking about when he was trying to describe the monster. I could never make out what he was saying.
I think I listened to a directors commentary, but I’m pretty sure the island was supposed to be the Island of Monsters from Greek mythology, and the creature was Scylla and/or Charybdis that guarded its shores. Hence why the ship was called the Argonautica, clear reference to the Greek myth of the Argonaut.
Deep Rising is the GOAT. It's the movie a lot of other films wish they could be.
They honestly haven't come close to this in over a decade.
I love this movie. It's just fun. Sure, it has flaws, but it more than makes up for that.
The one that makes me chuckle is their ammo is described as caseless, so all of that brass being sprayed everywhere is apparently decorative.
Funny you mention Kong's island, because this movie was supposed to be some kind of prequel to a new King Kong movie that never materialized.
On the other side RE4 isn't a game worthy of that title anyway but I digress
Other games like the original PS1 RE2 were right out banned, the reason seems to be you were able to "kill" humans, allegedly the Brad Vickers, even though you had to get to the police station without using health items or reloading to get to him iirc

Before watching, I wanna say I love this movie. Wish there was a sequel, and the curly hair guy is the primordial TJ Miller.
Which makes me wonder, would you ever consider doing something like "The Anatomy of a 98 Chevelle." Or "The mechanics of The Batmobile"
I think it would be neat to see you break down vehicles the way you do the various unholy abominations on this channel, like the angler fish.
This is such a great movie from my childhood. So glad you finally did a video on it!
18:33 THANK YOU for pointing out the glaring issues that shooting sequences in movies often have, is that no one wears hearing protection . Everyone in that vicinity would get tinnitus for days.
One of my fav movies. Yes im old. Plus a treat williams fan. The peanut scene cracks me up. Probably not supposed to be but i love it 😊
If you notice deep water fish have three adaptations for hunting, fang teeth, jaw that can swallow and hold prey, or ability to shoot their jaw the angler fish, gulper eel, and goblin shark
yeah, it WAS meant to be Skull Island and the thing marching to them was probably a T-Rex.
I was so entranced by that scene i paused it (yes vhs) and painstakingly slow fast forward to see to rope that yanked the dummy.
my favorite piece of trivia about this movie is that it was supposed to be a king kong prequel
For some reason I always forget how built Roanoke is.

That is an acetylene torch. And it would cut through that while wet. But not the mixture she had currently. Gotta focus it down.
While the effects are a bit dated, this movie is a ton of fun and could fit perfectly into the monsterverse. A pity it never go a sequel.

Octopus is also plural? …. source? I genuinely want to know the source.
Cephalopods rule! I used to volunteer at the Invert House of the National Zoo (RIP Invert House...) And I adore cephalopods! They absolutely recognize people who they frequently see, and if they don't trust you? They will definitely mess with you. And it's beautiful to see. 🤣

-Oh also if you imagine that the end of this movie is the beginning of "Tremors: Shrieker Island" it becomes much more fun!
@@SpartanFlashSentry Treat Williams and Michael Gross characters in one film would have been a historical match in cinema.
