Humanity and parasites have a long standing history of absolutely hating one another. There is nothing quite as abhorrent as a parasite feeding on your body, with or without your knowledge. Being relatively small creatures, typically there is nothing to worry about concerning external parasites if you can destroy them. However, once entering your body, thats where the issues begin to arise. In the events of Ticks, the parasites begin increasing in size and becoming well beyond their normal range of sizes. This presents an interesting issue of trying to keep blood within the body. But how did they become this? Lets discuss that in todays episode over Ticks!

I used to be a lab tech in parasitology studies. Had to deal with ticks far too frequently. After one long day at work, I came home to find my dog had torn open a bag of jelly beans in my bed. To this day I'm traumatized finding anything tick-esque on my body, clothes, or in my bed.

I love when dogs are being such good actors and you watch the behind the scenes videos and their tails are wagging and they're having the time of their lives being the big bad puppy, or being shaken on the ground before getting many belly rubs, or playing tag in the chase scenes. It's so good I love the dog actors.

I found it. It's called anglerfish, a western/horror movie from 2022, taking place in 1906.

I LOVE spiders, i work with Spiders and other animals they doesn't scare me, ticks THEY IS WHAT SCARES ME THEY ACTIVELY COME AFTER U
I loathe ticks. They are rather common in North Europe and carry nasty diseases. 3 of my friends have had encephalitis.
@@magnuskallas this is not as life threatening as that but there is a disease carried by lone star ticks here in Texas that infects you will a disease that makes you deathly allergic to red meat. I dread the day that happens because I love my steaks, but thankfully it eventually goes away after a few decades.

I live in the mountains and when people ask me what scares me the most out here I never answer "bears" or "mountain lions" or even "crazy hillbillies in the backwoods." I'm afraid of one thing out here, and that's ticks. I've only gotten one so far, but I've found several crawling on me and it's pure horror every single time. I adopted a stray dog out here and when he first approached me, he was absolutely covered with ticks. I removed around 30 of them from the lil guy. By the end of it I was actually kinda crying. I couldn't imagine how bad it'd feel to have so many of these lil bloodbags imbedded in my flesh. I also learned that they usually don't just come out, they often leave these big bleeding pits where their heads were.
At one point a few dropped off of him and I had to walk around my living room with a flashlight looking for them. I found a couple just walking around, completely inflated like lil blood balloons on their creepy legs. I'm still not 100% comfortable in my own space after the ordeal. Now the pup gets hit with flea and tick juice once a month and there have been no further issues. This is one of those things people don't consider when they drop their unwanted pets off in the mountains. After even a few nights sleeping in bushes, your animals gonna be completely infested. Take them to a shelter like a normal human being if you can't find a way to support them please. My dog got lucky and just happened to wander onto the right property at the right time when I could take on a dog. That many ticks can be fatal. A bad enough infestation can kill an animal and that's gotta be one of the worst ways to go I can imagine. I'd almost prefer fire. At least it'd kill all the ticks!
Running theory: Roanoke watched Finding Nemo as a kid and was traumatized by the Angler Fish scene.

Went to my step dads farmhouse and had to sleep in the guest room, where he keeps all his farmer clothing (overalls and pants he likes to walk through the fields with). I woke up at like 5am and felt something on my face, had the immediate wake up realizing it was a tick, went to the bathroom and found 6 more on me and my mom had to check my back where there was 2 more. Ticks suck
I remember this movie HORRIFYING me as a kid. Watched it as a double-feature with "Slugs". Traumatised for life. Slugs is even worse lol.

A lot of it is silly, but like in one scene they cover the floor in a room where a couple are having sex and the girl falls off the bed and it's really graphic. I think it was the fact that one of her eyes has been eaten out as she's all bloody and covered in wounds panicking kinda freaked out 10-year-old-me.

Holy shit, I thought this film was a fever dream! I remember the scene with Carlton's head splitting open to reveal a giant tick. That scared the shit out of me as a kid.

Every time I go out in the garden, I have to wrap myself in tape (sticky side outwards) to catch ticks from trying to climb up my legs along with spraying my clothing down in repellant for ticks.
Had one on my back under my bra strap when camping. Started getting the bullseye rash within a day of removing it from my skin and had to go get a round of antibiotics to take. The itch is awful.
Like those really small larva ticks that appear like a tiny little mole on your skin … until you realize “wait I don’t have a mole there” - shuddering at a giant one, special effects or not.
Hire a pest control service (that's what I do for work), it's well worth it. They'll spray a chemical that basically kills ticks and mosquitos on contact. Usually it has the same active ingredient as the Frontline type stuff that people put on their dogs.

I despise ticks. I live in an area where these things are practically inevitable thanks to human stupidity, and I've had a dog get turned into a vineyard by them. You've talked about the idea of making mosquitoes go extinct; maybe we could start with these bloodsuckers. Maybe include the humanoid kind.

Same. Here in Germany it can get really bad. My house cat escaped was outside in the garden last summer, and we had to shower him, because they were dozens in his his fur. I saw the neighbors cat with maybe 20, maybe more, some were extremely big, like small grapes 🤮

Fun fact when trying to get a tick off, you to twist not pull this is because tick don’t respond to the stimulus of pull but if you twist the tick will know and let go because it does if it doesn’t it will die, so that’s how you get ticks off

The practical effects in this movie were on point, especially the scene where it's in the vets lab and when the guy uses the torch as he goes out the door to the van. Love me some good practicals.

The only tick-head myth I heard growing up was that if the head was left behind it will keep slurping up blood, and you’ll keep bleeding. It wouldn’t make you bleed out, but you obviously don’t want it to keep going.

Usually, it takes a second, but ticks do kinda pop after their internals have evaporated from heat
Had to pause several times, since ticks make me feel queasy. Has to do with a traumatizing experience of finding one in my ear one day, and seeing them or just hearing the name gives me a queasy feeling and sometimes makes my skin itch.
Your delivery and telegraphing when you find your commentary funny is delightful! Coupling that with the actual explanations makes you one of my favorite channels.

26:45 ticks actually do pop when exposed to fire. Did this at camp once and saw others doing the same. Controlled fires help with tick infestations.
Can vouche this as well as when inwas in Missouri visiting my grand father we found a tick on my brother and got inoffensive him before either bit him. Dad tried to crush it with a shaker but due tonits thing body it was very difficult. However my grandfather which at the time was a heavy smoker just took out his cigarette and press it against the tick and it quickly popped. He explained that he often times did this whenever he removed ticks from either himself or the dogs he bred. (And yes he paid a lot of money to have his property sprayed for ticks and yet they still were found on his property.

I managed to find a tick on my cat a few days ago before it was able to burrow into her skin, and a few waiting to latch onto something in my house. Dunno how they got in since none of my cats go outside(I refuse to let them go out because there's a really busy road that people speed down next to my house), but eversince I started using the AC more often, they haven't been getting inside as much.

Thanks for the lifting warnings. I never did steroids or other PEDs but worked up to a 520 squat (465 for 6 rep sets). Was told to lose 25 lbs. to slow arthritis and need a hip replacement. Docs mentioned that many of today's crossfitters are needing hip and knee replacements at a much younger age. I wish someone had mentioned you run out of cartilage when you use it to the max. Only BW exercises for the lower body now.
I can't remember if I recommended this at some point or imagined that I did, but I love this movie and am love seeing you cover this stuff

I'm an acarologist and I love ticks, they are some of the most fascinating organisms on the planet. Did have to work with another scientist who was convinced that ticks were internal parasistes. Maybe they saw this movie?
Parasites are integral to our ecosystem so imagine if they disappeared one day?
I agree that ticks are fascinating, just like other arachnids like spiders and scorpions. Ticks are just really annoying to deal with since the little arachnids are almost everywhere during the summer. Pulling them off is such a process, too, since you have to make sure the head comes out as well as to avoid infection.
Are you insane? Do you like to be infecfed by tick diseases? They're just another useless and harmful sublife form!

I can confirm that ticks do explode when exposed to fire. Not nearly that fast, but they will pop. Years of archery (and as a result, peeling off ticks) has taught me quite a few things I'd rather forget

Remember my parents renting this when I was 5-6 years old. Gave me nightmares for years. Don't know why they let me watch it, maybe I snuck down the hallway to see it. Love these kind of movies now. So happy it was finally covered by this channel. Now only if he could do Arachnids next.

When I saw you cover Mosquito I was hoping you would cover this. These movies were my father's and my go to B-movies in the 90s. Few good memories I have of him were thanks to those movies.
