- Aliens, are an interesting bunch. The reality is we have no idea, at least collectively, if they are out there, and we also do not know what form they would take. We are carbon based life, but does that mean all life is carbon based? In the events of Virus, Humanity would come across a species that was set on invading Earth. By utilizing machines, this life form was able to dictate and control our machines, but also was able to influence how humans operate. So In todays episode, lets discuss how this process started!
The Movie is called Virus lol

Being autistic as hell I can absolutely make myself flatline in the brain and think about literally nothing on command....except when I need to sleep...then I completely lose that ability lol.
So it's normal to read and say the words in your head as you do so, but is it normal to recite in your head the words that are being spoken to you?
Roanoke could never go down with the ship because there’s anglerfish down there. 😂
lmfao
Roanoke would pull a Costa Concordia, lol
The ship will return with cyborg angler fishes, and the lifeform will know everything, the angler fishes know 💀
his SHEER HATRED/Terror of them would literally make him run on water
angler fishes with rabies, actually 😱
Fun fact about typhoons: they often dredge up water from the lower ocean, bringing animals from the abyssal zone up with it. This means that, yes, those choppy waters might realistically have some angler fish in them... Aren't you glad that you learned this...
Nope. Rather terrified about that
Also the lifeform could catsh one and turn it into an angler fish cyborg. It would learn everything the angler fish knows, even memories, like its first kiss 🥰
@@leonnunhofer3453. Let it learn from a giant squid or a whale and let it realize the existential terror of the planet it is now stuck on . . . It would self destruct more likely than not

These cyborgs weren't budget terminators but an equivalent of warhammer 40k servitors
Nah, they were the Borg.

Dollar store terminators? Nah. I think you mean bootleg borg
You might say, bootlorg
bootleg strogg

You are correct. They are still referred to as Astronaut(USA), Cosmonaut(RU), and Taikonaut(CN). All that Destiny 2 knowledge finally paying off.
As an aside, in Chinese the sky (天空) is translated as "the emptiness in the sky" while space(太空) is loosely translated as "the emptiness above the sky"
Cool the more you learn
In Germany we say "(Welt)Raumfahrer" (space farer) and it's not Latin or Greek either xD
See you Starside, Guardian.
Wonder what India will call them
The whole "you use what you have to build" reminded me of the Tim Burton movie "9", where The Machine used human and animal skeletons to build its cyborg creatures, after it brought about the total extinction of the human race. It was genuinely terrifying to see, especially for a kid.
I wouldn't call them cyborgs at that point. Just a skeleton carcas without anything living.
That movie was nuts.
I love both the antagonist of this movie and the Machine from 9
9 was an insane movie, I feel bad for any kids who thought it was a cutesy or funny movie lmao, awesome movie though
@@dodobirdtime Fr bruh, I watched this when I was in elemntary school thinking it was just another animated movie 💀
"If the flesh is weak then you aren't lifting enough" - Adeptus biologicus, probably
That subtle Terminator theme in the background the whole time is **Chef's Kiss**
I caught that too, funny how you subtly pickup familiar tunes, what a classic. Mwah.
I thought I was hearing crap, but I'm glad I'm not the only one who caught that haha
Was sitting with this video on while doing something else....had a strong urge to watch T2. Subtle yes indeed.
I had to double check if I'm hearing properly lmao
Great choice, and that's not the first subtle track that I noticed in those videos. Really appreciate this ❤
I KNEW I WASNT BLOODY CRAZY!!! THIS MOVIE EXISTS!! THANK YOU SO MUCH. I HAVE BEEN HAUNTED BY THIS MEMORY OF A MOVIE FOR 80 PERCENT OF MY LIFE
that was the same reaction i had to the movie split second saw it once on tv as a kid could never find it till some youtuber showed a brief clip of it 15 years of it just randomly being thought of and there was my answer
Wait, what?
Assuming you saw this at release or shorty thereafter, that would make you around 2.6 years old upon watching this, and being haunted by it for 80% of your life 😂
@@dwaynewrighton8547 It's plausible. I saw Event Horizon on TV when I was like 8, and it was about a year after it was in theaters.

17:20 in the book 2001 the author -a physicist- said the aliens who created the black obelisks had transferred their consciousness from mechanical hunks to "Lattices of light". Its been almost 20 yrs since I read that but it's so lovely and evocative a passage its stuck with me all these yrs.
That's one of my favorite books of all time
90s horror continues.
Edit: The space station at the beginning was Mir. It was the longest serving space station before the ISS.
RIP MIR. o7
This movie in a nutshell
"From the moment I understood the weakness of my flesh, it disgusted me. I craved the strength and certainty of steel. I aspired to the purity of the Blessed Machine. Your kind cling to your flesh, as though it will not decay and fail you. One day the crude biomass you call the temple will wither, and you will beg my kind to save you. But I am already saved, for the Machine is immortal… Even in death I serve the Omnissiah"
Thanks for the proper quote :)
The Flesh is Weak.

I love Virus for a pre-strogg/Borg movie. Also, the way that humans are considered "spare parts" is a fantastic horror idea
The movie would make for a fantastic book.
@@bunnygirlerika9489 Funny thing, the movie is actually based on a Dark Horse comic named Virus

Man, this movie was done dirty by critics when it came out. It's a decent movie with interesting premise (granted, the comic apparently delves deeper into the whole machine and human thing). I end up watching Virus every now and then.
Roanoke's take is very interesting one, a lot of guessing on "The Virus'" usage of human parts mostly revolve around waterproofing the borgs.
What is the name of original comic?
@@HappyAspidit's called Virus
Released back in 1992 by Dark Horse
Short too only 4 issues long
I never even knew this movie was a thing, tbh - but the minute I saw these guys, I admittedly assumed they were Borg (from Star Trek.)
Thats just bits and pieces of the C'tan shard of the Void Dragon making the Mechanicus early
A man of culture, I see.
*tech heresy intensifies*
It's just strogg nexus
Green water is a sea term for when a lot of residual water remains on deck after a tidal wave washes over the ship. The issues faced by the Sea Star was the weight of the barge taking on water, the towline breaking under heavy strain, knocked out radar and comms, and damage to the hull and deck once the towing winch broke from the tug after such tremendous pulling force from the sinking barge.
"you're probably wondering why im calling her ripely"

This and Terminator is part of what set me on the path of becoming a robotics engineer. Make of that what you will.
That’s super cool! How is it? What’s the coolest thing you’ve heard of/studied/made?
Necrons should more.
@@Thi-Sen I should clarify that I'm still a student, though this is what I've set my mind to. Anyway, the coolest things I've studied are industrial robots, like assembly line arms, pick-and-place machines with image recognition, etc.. The amount of things that can be done with a simple cartesian coordinate system is pretty neat.
Flesh puppets 😊
Whatever Miles Dyson we're watching you pal!
You reminded me of the anime: “86-eighty-six-“ in which the robots there started taking people’s heads in order to replace their own processors which were rigged to fail after six years causing them to gradually become smarter and more dangerous as the series progresses.
The cyborg at the end is what the Adeptus Mechanicus strive to become.
Oh my God this is my favorite sci-fi "horror" movie, the gory Doom like robotic practical effects really got me into robotics
Love ur content ❤
Migraine Roanoke is sassy Roanoke and I’m here for it.
That "well akshualy" impersonation is so good, I replayed it like 5 times xD
The opening segment makes me think of one of Terry Pratchett's Discworld books,
Reaper Man
Which someone dies... death doesnt come back to take his soul, so he just... goes back into his own body, but like, he describes the whole process as, uncanny, certain things he no longer has to control such as breathing since, he is a soul controlling the body, but, sometimes he can "Choose" to eat, by working his own stomach manually to, do the things to digest, and it takes a lot of concentration.
I just thought it was a pretty interesting take on the perspective of having manual Homeostasis
Wasn't it one of the Wizards?
@@TheKrispyfort yeah! They just held his funeral, and he was being thankful they do the "mourning period" because of the time they accidentally buried a prankster alive
F**K YEAH! I've been waiting for this one, one of my favorite body horror movies with amazing props and cyborg prosthetics!
Also, I love the choice in background music for the video.
The closest we got to an Adeptus Mechanicus movie...
Hey! Virus! This and The Thing got me into the more body horror movies and got me into art. Love the behind the scenes of these and how they made the effects.
T2 sound track in the background is chefs kiss
The terminator theme in the background is everything 👌🏼
Me trying to decide whether or not Roanoke is using the character's real name or one he arbitrarily assigned to them
The typhoon's eye sometimes can move very slowly. 8km or 5 miles per hour. Usually it's more like 20km or 12 miles per hour, and it's around 50km or 35 miles in diameter. Sometimes it's bigger, sometimes it moves faster, sometimes slower, so being inside the eye for hours is possible 🤷♂️
I guess even typhoons like to move around like slow farts.
Warhammer references…
Helldivers references… Roanoke you truly are a King among nerds!
"LFB reenacts what his older brother would do, just 24 years later" - Roanoke's humor was next level with this one. Also, thank you for doing Virus, this movie is a guilty pleasure of mine.
The rant on consciousness made me once again really wan Roanoke to cover SOMA, there's easily a couple videos between the various Structure Gel abominations, the Gel itself, and of course the W.A.U.
Glad you posted a community post recently, apperantly youtube decided not to recommend a single video of yours for over 3 months, even though I'm subscribed. At least I got a good 5-6 hours of content to watch now!
Cheeky low volume Teminator theme tune, rocking it dude!

You eat certain things you can feel like your in love too, or like you're bulletproof. Doesn't mean it's comparable or the real thing.
Just stay away from Salvia Divinorum. You have been Warned!
I remember seeing the ship Virus was filmed on in anchorage in the James River reserve mothball fleet over 20 years ago while boating. It was the USNS Hoyt Vandenburg which was used extensively during the Apollo program for tracking the astronauts. It's no longer there since it was sunk to make a reef in 2009.
I remember at highschool I took a workshop for learning how to read without subvocalizing (reading the words to myself in my head), and instead read stuff by absorbing whole lines of text. At the time it was called power reading and its very useful and cuts reading time by a lot. Not only can you read 1k+ page novels in a day this way, it turned out useful for watching subtitled shows lol
That's somethin cool, any idea where I can learn more about this?
And just realized, you got the terminator theme playing in the background, perfect!
Roanoke has been one of my biggest inspirations for pursuing a Molecular Biology Degree.
You have helped me a whole lot with my future plans in life, aswell as making me so interested in the science of our brains. Thank you and keep up the great work man.
I am very much enjoying the 40K references in this one. The Emperor Protects. Videos about the 'nids at some point?
yes, we still call them cosmonauts (космонавты)
And rightfully so.
Because they travel to space (kosmos) and then travel in space.
They don't travel to stars nor inside stars.
Virus is really one of my favourite movies, so thank you for making a video on it! I love it, it has it all! A 'empty' ship in the middle of the ocean, a crew finds it and boards it only to find out what's really going on, guns, fire, action and horror. I love it!
I'm pretty pumped I mentioned this movie on the Deep Risin video and we got this so quickly. It's my childhood all over again. Thank you Roanoke. You are truly a scholar and a gentleman.
I hate what he's been through, but I love new Roanoke.
Be like Richie, don't build robot dismantle robot, and use the part to build high explosives.
Dude i love your videos and enthusiasm, you really are one of the best youtubers.
I really loved this movie, and would have like a sequel or a prequel showing things playing out on that space station and even on the ship before hand. I wondered if Squeaky's was actually semi active in there or was it the machine just repeating Steve's name. I think the Captain was more active given he willingly gave himself over to it, and he had info it needs.
Great way to start my Saturday hangover routine, cup of coffee, a joint and Roanoke covering a movie from the childhood.
This is a perfect way to show how the mechanicus would look irl!
Oh yaaaaa, I remember this movie. Never gave it much thought all these years later but it was a bit out there given some of the aspects... Glad to see you went over it as I honestly forgot the name of it but I can remember a lot of the scenes well.
Dude, those lines in the top right of the video made me think my screen was broken lmao
Yes I think about the electronic of the brain . I once had an epileptic Seizure and had to relearn how to whistle
Im enjoying the waltz through 90s horror with you. Virus was one of favorite movies as a kid, not because it was good but the idea necro-cyborgs was amazing to me. Nine-year old me was a weird kid and I still am.
Use to think of this as a "So bad, Its entertaining".
Something my friends and I can rift tracks if we where ever where drunk. While also being a popcorn movie I could put on when board.
I'm stoked you did this movie! One of my favorites from the 90s
This channel keeps bringing back nostalgia of horror movies i used to watch on tv.
Thank you Roanoke for covering virus ove been looking forward to this one
I feel a helldivers video coming within the next few months...
The terminator theme throughout was awesomely subtle, well done!
Thank you Roanoke, for making think about how I am not in control of my body and the concept of control over my body is a construct created by my own anxiety machine...
Great Vid Roanoke , now to watch the electrical discussion while highly altered .
17:01...thanks for the semi existential crisis. Just what I needed before I go to bed lol
i loved this movie, one of my favorite "horror" flicks, thanks for covering it.
An absolute favorite of mine, even if the movie isn't too great as opposed to the actual greats like Alien, and the monster doesn't make much sense. Still, legendary special effects and I have been waiting in excitement for this upload! I've always wondered how the whole robot person thing would be humorously explained by Roanoke! The recurring joke of sun-downing sent me reeling!
Fantastic as always thank you
One of my favorite movies. Excellent sci-fi gore horror with an interesting antagonist. The effects are still holding up today. Good stuff.
Your comments at the end about this creature maybe trying to help us is similar to "The Thing" according to a short story based on that movie... Great Explanation 👍👍👍
I remember watching this movie back in the sci-fi channel back in 2003 late at night and it has been one of my favorite horror movies along with The Thing.
I’ve been waiting for this video since you started this channel.
This was honestly a really interesting movie. And it's probably one of the first movies I've ever watched before seeing a Roanoke video about it.

hell yes! i was hoping youd cover this movie i watched on scifi when i was way too young haha
Yeah, I had this on VHS way back in the day.
The Workshop scene still creeps me out.
One minute in and Roanoke is already giving me an existential crisis
I have seen parts of this movie when i was 6.
Watched it in secret from the doorway , without my parents noticing.
Had nightmares for months and developed a fear of the dark that i got over only 10 years later.
Fun.
"Steve". I laugh every time Squeeky shows up and only calls his name.
so, i really enjoy your content. so much so, that i even sometimes just watch one of your videos instead of a movie.
now, i was wondering: have you ever considered making maybe a series of videos that go even deeper into the medical and scientific side of things? especially neurophysiological stuff and generally how the brain works is so interesting and ESPECIALLY when you also factor in philosophical thoughts (like the origin of thought itself in this video), it becomes even more interesting. not sure if many people share this sentiment, but i'm also a nerd among nerds.
you just have a knack for putting scientific, sometimes probably pretty dry stuff into entertaining essays and that is a skill that not many people have . or to put it in simpler terms:
you make learning fun!
(maybe do a poll on deepsea creatures first and get the anglerfish stuff out of the way)
I was looking through your videos for one on Virus. Surprised you didn’t cover this a long time ago
I’m from an island in the pacific and one time during a typhoon I was smoking on my balcony watching all the chaos going on. I love typhoons

virus is one of my favorite movie, i really love those cyborg and robot design in this movie...
This movie gave me nightmares for weeks. I loved it
This movie and deep riding were on tv a lot when I was young definitely watched them a lot
I like hearing about prions and diseases so I let your videos play on repeat 😅 alot
This movie has been living in my brain for a while, and I've been fascinated by the designs and the idea of machines grafting flesh into one, as opposed to the usual cyborg.
So this video is definitely feeding my brain cravings!
What I always took from this movie was that the Electric Entity was learning, each robot we saw was the next iteration as it continued to learn and adapt.
Hell yeah so happy you finally covered this movie I like it’s antagonist
Love this movie, one of the best creature features.
