"Dysphagia is the sensation of difficulty or abnormality of swallowing. It is due to a structural or a motility abnormality in the passage of solids or liquids from the mouth to the stomach. It ranges from an inability to initiate the swallowing reflex to food or liquid being stuck in the oesophagus. In contrast, odynophagia is pain with swallowing."

I’m 21 years old and have had trouble initiating the swallowing process. I feel like my body is stopping me from swallowing . I have to really concentrate on swallowing. Sometimes I keep chewing until it’s food and liquid and am forced to spit it out due to fear of choking or just not being able to swallow. I have no other issues. No pain nothing. It’s really frustrating and I haven’t been eating properly. Also have lost weight due to this :(.

I've had this disorder for 24 years with no luck or assistance. Eating is depressing because it makes me so anxious. I can drink liquids no issue if it's no thicker than water, but even food when it's chewed to water is hard to swallow, my body panics and my throat closes up. It's so heartbreaking. I miss EATING.

To everyone suffering with this or any other illness you're in my prayers.
I'm going to share my recent experience with dysphagia in hopes that it gives someone comfort. About 3 weeks ago I felt as if I was choking on pizza. It felt stuck in my throat and no matter how much I coughed or drank or tried to clear my throat the feeling would not go away. I went to the ER because I had a fear I aspirated, but the doc refused to do a x-ray because I was speaking and breathing fine although I felt I was not. They gave me a GI cocktail lidocaine mixed with some type of antacid I suppose. This did not help. Ever since I'm having trouble swallowing feeling like food is stuck in my throat and chest. I researched and found out that you can have GERD without feeling burning sensation in your throat and chest. I'm not a doc and hadn't been diagnosed yet, but I thought why not give some OTC meds a try so I started taking pepcid. The pepcid gave me a little relief, but eating still made my throat feel irritated like food was sticking. I stopped all alcohol after the first incident as well. Then I researched some more and found out omeprazole could start to heal your esophagus and esophageal sphincter so I started taking the OTC disolvable tablets. They do not work as fast as the pepcid but I assumed I had damaged the lining of my esophagus with the daily coffee and casual drinking alcohol so I am continuing the omeprazole. I saw a Gastroenterologist for consult (I used to work for one). The doc prescribed me the same 20 mg Omeprazole that had already started taking OTC and scheduled me for an EGD. I started drinking chamomile tea with honey because at this point even the protein shakes were having a hard time going down. Last night I had another choking incident while drinking the tea and instantly coughed it back up even some coming out of my nose. This some how gave me relief to try to eat soft foods again. This morning I've had 2 cups of almond milk with mashed Graham crackers inside this is my first meal in 3 days. BTW I am 5'3 started at 135 and now 125 in matter of weeks. I believe something may have gotten caught in my windpipe causing irritation and the second choking incident may have cleared it out. I am still taking the disolvable omeprazole because I do know I have some sort of reflux because certain food makes me nauseous and does come back up without the burning feeling. I am still going to have my upper endoscopy next Friday. I will keep you all posted. In the meantime I would advise anyone having this issue to take it seriously don't be embarrassed to talk about it and see a doctor. Preferably an Ear Nose and Throat specialist or Gastroenterologist. If you feel your problem is your tongue they can refer you to a speech therapist that can show you exercises to help with your swallow. please don't ignore it and I am praying for all of us. Keep pushing it will get better.
Also to anyone feeling scared like this may be something that kills them there are devices you can order online to suction the airway and remove whatever is blocking the airway in case of an emergency. Some of these devices can be used alone. I would research and order one. Good to have anyway even If you're not suffering from Dysphagia.

thank you for sharing your story, my problems started about 5 years ago when i was eating food and felt something in my throat and out of panic i ran to drink water. i never had this problem before because i used to eat like a horse without problems. but then I sought care and was told that I have a hiatal hernia which then got worse over time, and affected my swallowing in a lot of bad ways. Even then when my problems started, it wasn't as much about swallowing as it is today. lately I haven't been able to eat properly because I'm afraid of choking and so on, I'm a smoker and I usually drink soft drinks once in a while and my problems are not the reflux but the swallowing. Hope soon I get some surgery and all you others who also suffer from this. May god be with us all

I am worried I have signs of this. it started as a child fear of choking and doctors told my mother I could have damage to that area from whooping cough as a baby. I was also attacked with a sharp instrument as a kid there as well. It got worse during coughing fits in 2006 with a bug and choking on raw carrot and it got worse with a bad middle ear infection and anti-inflammatory and reflux. The pain can be terrible when the spasms will be in waves and I find just sipping water or lozenges or natural things like peppermint etc and breathing exercises, meditation help and other exercises. No doctor will talk this over with me, and the only medical person who has was a dentist who seemed to care more then my doctors. I try to avoid spicy things and hot drinks or over hot food. Let it cool down a lot. drugs like alprazolam or other type calmatives like Clobazam relax muscle spasms for me.

My muscles keep on moving in that way. 1st I was able to sleep second day, it was hard. Now, as soon as I sleep my I just do aggressive swallow movement and wake. Can't control it, don't know what to do. What's worse is that at 1st it used to happen under nose (in the throat) so there was pain there but now it happens behind is in the throat and it feels something stuck there (which was not happening earlier). And i dont know, it also feels like something constantly coming out of my nasal chamber. Leaving like this is becoming hard. I am 16, I have a lot of studies and I can't focus on them. Please help

I now have dysphagia post intubation from a surgery. It took a little while to develop but I am sure what caused it as I had no problems swallowing prior to the surgery. Some foods get stuck in the base of my throat and I will have to vomit to get relief. It is usually meats like ham, turkey and chicken, but also hard boiled eggs and rice, other times I can take huge bites of other foods and have no problems with salads or pizza etc. Sometimes swallowing pills is difficult and feels like they are sitting in the base of my throat instead of going into my stomach. I cannot prove that there was malpractice, but I want to know if there are others out there with the same injury post intubation that I have?

Does someone here can share me your experience with dysphagia. I suffer since 7 months from it. My problem is in the oral phase. Doctors in my country believe that its in my head. I do also suffer and extremely bad insomnia so what I feel is that im very weak to swallow or that my brain cant send the right message to do the swallow. Im desperate, im hungry and in pain. I have lost around 30 pounds, and nobody helps me. Im 36 years old and I feel im dying slowly.

I had dysphagia for 1 and half Year, I went to a doctor, He tested my airway, and said my airway was healthy,And this is my problem because of the high acidity in my stomach،He gave me some medicine, and told me to avoid spicy and sour foods. I did this for six months, and I feel much better, I was not completely well , but it became much much easier for me to swallow food.

Hi pls help I’m not sure if I have GERD bc I used to puke and my throat get sore sometimes but today I got checked out bc I had difficulty swallowing food or dysphagia and sometimes when I breathe through my mouth it hurts and makes me cough it’s like the bite is going down slowly and it makes me panick that am about to choke or something lol and yeahs when I lay down I feel like am about to vomit it’s been for like 8 months. So basically I did the barium swallow test and the x ray digestive system and blood analysis and thanks god that all turn out I’m fine and have no effects I asked the doctor if I need to do an esophagogastroduodenoscopy and he told me I don't need to hurry for it and he said if i do not get better from the treatment he gave me then we will do the esophagogastric endoscopy is there any way to confirm that I have GERD or any signs? Also he gave me takepron 30 and librax dragees 30 they all pills, btw 16 uhh I hate the fact that I can’t eat normally again I lost a lot of weight I was 38 and now am 33 which is not good for a teenager :(

I have difficulty swallowing sometime especially when I eat meats such a chicken pork etc. also bread can be a problem if I have sandwich (cheese& ham) and swallow too quickly it get half way down then gets stuck like my oesophagus goes Into “spasm” then not even drinking helps that just makes it worse so I have no choice except to vomit. after that it’s fine I can swallow normally again I have noticed when it happens it’s usually when I’m talking during a meal. It might be because I’m eating too quickly because trapped air seems to cause it. sometimes if I “burp” this helps the food go down could breathing too rapidly cause this problem any help you can offer would be much appreciated thank.

I was diagnosed with ALS and not one doctor will look in or down my throat with a ostescope or what ever it's called. I've told doctors I have parasite worms an they called me delusional. Not examining my body or poop. My mouth on the inside and out side is full of tapeworms. I know tapeworms are the cause of my issues. They have damaged my nerves that control my tongue and throat and muscles. I bet I was misdiagnosed for ALS.

@@Jcpangilinan I had recently an Endoscopy and the Gastroenterologist told me my Dysphagia was probably cause by my GERD. That the only treatment is to continue taking my anti-acid either every day or two days appart. Or else my dysphagia will always come back. My Dysphagia is very much less present. Plus I have started taking my PPI (acid reflux meds) every two days as suggested the Gastroenterologist I saw. It does help but still hoping one day that I wont need to take it that often.
