- Did you know the Pokémon Franchise made by game freak and published by Nintendo is almost at it's 10th main line game! that's crazy. That also means there are ALOT of pokemon Gym leaders out there so I've started an art / design series where I try to make a new gym leader for each type!
right with the SEO stuff out of the way, here's the wonderful folks that helped give feedback on the designs seen in this video, these designs wouldn't be as great as they are without them

The dragon gym leader is most definitely the definition of "never underestimate your opponents"
personally while i love the direction you took camilla in at the end, it feels like she's missing something. i kind of loved how she was both a masseuse and a tough girl, with the tattoos and the squarer build and rope belt and such. i think a subtle pattern on her shirt would help the large color block feel a little more comfy on the eyes. overall great design, just a few things i thought couldve stayed from the first finalized design, personally! fantastic work so far, i cant wait to see what you come up with for psychic and ground ^x^
I love a masseuse as a fighting specialist. Most fighting type people focus on hyper offense and pushing your limits. Having one who takes it more slowly and focuses on keeping their body healthy is really cool. Maybe she's focus more on buffing her stats rather than just attacking nonstop?
Ohhhh that’s a good idea! Loves like bulk up or rest would be fun for a kit like that!
Or to have mienshao focus on regenerator she could have a new fighting type Uturn move.
Her pokemon gets worn out? Retreats to heal up. Like how massage soothes your body
It be cool if a gym leader using only fossil pokemon or cat pokemon or dog pokemon or eevee evolution pokemon or pseodo legendary pokemon
I’ve had the idea for a while to make “what if I were a gym leader for each type” drawings (mostly for myself cuz I don’t post much) but the process I was imagining seems pretty similar to yours here, with the added criteria of picking the Pokémon and job/theme based on stuff I like, which would be easier for some types than others
On that note, I really like the idea of a water gym leader who’s like- an aquarium hobbyist? The gym leader and all the gym trainers teams are almost exclusively made of fish Pokemon like goldeen, finneon, etc, and the gym looks like either a fish store with several smaller tanks, or has a bunch of really large ones that take up entire walls, like those aquariums you visit like zoos. All because water is one of my fave types, and I’m a big fan of pet fish

These designs are all incredible! I love them so much
AHHHH THEY'RE ALL SO GOOD the concepts especially!! As for notes:
- Reed is sweet! The plait, dolphin tail and little facial hair fits great! My only idea is that I think the marsh could be a great place to emphasise that one mechanic, where you can pick up treasure and healing items in the water. Maybe he collects lost trinkets to give back to people?
- Aster is peak pokemon design I'm not even kidding, right down to the hair. You nailed it that some characters will just have unique faces for variety's sake. My only note is that, I know Aster isn't grand like most dragon trainers, but hear me out: wacky hawaiian shirt colours. The old man 8th gym leader who makes you climb a mountain to battle behind his house? Yeah, he can dress how he wants...
- Camellia is gorgeous, and the mienshao/butterfly association helps her stand out so much. My main note is that I didn't really learn about how she interacts with her profession. Maybe she could be overdecorated in flowers to show her status at the parlour, or that she's really highly strung while trying to manage everything (which is why she's a fighting specialist perhaps?)
All in all I really loved what you did!! Can't wait to see what else you've got, just dont push yourself too hard :]!!
For some reason, the first thing that came to my mind when you said Dragon Type Gym Leader was a K-Pop Star.
With Raihan being a streamer. A top idol wouldnt be that out of place.
After all most dragon trainers are 'brimming with potential' and idols embody that perfectly
These designs are all super fun! Drampa is my favorite pokemon, but i never knew i needed a silly old man to go with it. This makes me wanna make some of my own gym leaders, trainers, or something along those lines
the dragon guy is what blayne could have been if he was in gen 9, specialy the tropical shirt and glasses like he was in the first season of the anime

Wow, this was an interesting breakdown of all these elements that make cool Gym Leaders. Something that blends with a brand but still stands out is a challenge, and I'd say you succeeded.

I absolutely love these 3 so much! Their designs and concepts are so unique, crazy old dragon hermit is my absolute favorite!
I decided to try my hand at making some teams- mostly based on vibes(™) with a little bit of actual team building sprinkled in. All are teams of 6 with fully evolved mons so in game they’d probably be more like rematch teams then their first encounter teams.

Reed the Water Type Gym Leader:
The main goal with his team was finding pokemon that could help with conservation and teaching kids. I also wanted to stray away from beach/ocean water type pokemon and instead use pokemon found in more inland bodies of water like lakes and rivers.
Gastrodon, the partner mon, wonderful friendly goo guy. Gastrodon is also legitly a really good mon being Water/Ground with only one weakness Storm Drain is a great ability but I think I like the idea of Sticky Hold more if only cause I like the idea of making use of the passive fishing bonus.
Seismitoad, Another Water/Ground mon so there is a bit of type overlap here but one of their pokedex entries is “This Pokémon is popular among the elderly, who say the vibrations of its lumps are great for massages.” and it fits in so well with the other two gym leaders in this video. Like maybe Reeds town and Camelia's town are right next to each other and his Seismitoad learned its massaging techniques from the Fighting gym leader. And whenever Aster stops by he can pester Reed into getting a free massage.
Swanna, With two Water/Ground types we really need some grass coverage, Pelipper is the other Water/Flying that comes to mind but really the seagull based line is really more of a beach pokemon I feel like Swanna’s swan/duck based design fits more in with the sampy lake feel. Also this bird doesnt get enough love.
Milotic, also just a really lovely mon. It has a dex entry stating “Milotic live at the bottom of large lakes. When this Pokémon’s body glows a vivid pink, it releases a pulsing wave of energy that brings soothing calm to troubled hearts.” Perhaps it uses its calming energy to calm fish pokemon so they don't bother Reed while he works. Can also learn ice moves for some greater coverage against grass types.
Poliwrath, there was a mention of kids being a part of the gym challenge as part of a learning opportunity and that immediately brought to mind one of Poliwraths dex entries “Poliwrath in the Alola region are strong swimmers that use the breaststroke. Many children learn to swim by imitating Poliwrath.” Maybe Reed’s gym also offers community swim lessons?
Azumarill, big and tanky would definitely only be part of a late game gym or rematch team but I really like its Alpha Sapphire dex entry “Azumarill can make balloons out of air. It makes these air balloons if it spots a drowning Pokémon. The air balloons enable the Pokémon in trouble to breathe.” alongside milotic it could help struggling pokemon and rescue pokemon who get stuck in the murky marsh and alongside Poliwrath it can act as a lifeguard to kids.

Aster the Dragon Type Gym Leader:
For Aster the only thing I knew going in is that I didn't want to use any pseudo legendaries as most of those are reserved for elite four or champions, that left me with a relatively small pool of potential usable dragon types:
Drampa, Asters ace pokemon, I love when pokemon and trainer almost imitate each other. And Drampas dex entry “Drampa is a kind and friendly Pokémon-up until it’s angered. When that happens, it stirs up a gale and flattens everything around.” matches the idea of Aster being a friendly kooky guy but also an absolute powerhouse. I like the idea of them being the town's grandpas that would do anything to protect their people.
Haxorus, Im still shocked that Haxorus isnt considered a pseudo legendary but for my purposes it works great. I included Haxorus because of its similar personality to Drampa of being both kind but protective as described in its Shield dex entry “While usually kindhearted, it can be terrifying if angered. Tusks that can slice through steel beams are how Haxorus deals with its adversaries.”
Flapple, this guys really just here because I love the applin line and think they deserve more love and out of the 3 different evolution paths this guy looks the most like a crazy gremlin to fit Asters vibes
Duraludon, a dragon type gym leader is bound to face a fairy type, this guy is meant to act as a counter for this inevitability. I also like the image of Aster and Duraludon chilling inside on a rainy day as Duraludon is noted to dislike the rain due to rust. Im hesitant to evolve it into Archaludon as it has stats similar to a pseudo legendary though potentially one could be used on a rematch team post game.
Cyclizar, a type overlap with Drampa but I couldn't pass on the opportunity for this crazy old guy to ride basically a motorcycle like he's having a mid life crisis.
Druddigon, Honestly just an underrated dragon type it also absorbs sunlight with its wings and I think it would be funny if Aster used him as an on the go heating blanket/bed for his old bones.

Chamelia the Fighting Type Gym Leader:
I wanted pokemon with hands, just pokemon that could help do massages alongside their trainer. I also wanted to go for a crew of a variety of shapes and sizes.
Mienshao, the partner pokemon learns fake out and with TM moves it can get great coverage. Plus the color scheme matches perfectly.
Falinks, the other proposed partner mon and the only member of the team without arms. I do love that though because I still like to think this guy wants to help give massages and so instead it just gives you a back massage by walking on you with all of their little feet. They’re funny little guys that need lots of love
Bewear, A good wall mon with some dark type coverage moves for psychic types. I also love the idea of it learning to lower the strength of its hugs to just pop someones back instead of break their spine.
Pawmot, Here as a coverage for flying types but also “Pawmot’s fluffy fur acts as a battery. It can store the same amount of electricity as an electric car.” and maybe they can help power any machinery at the massage parlor. Also being a masseuse probably help them train their arm coordination when they evolved into a Pawmo.
Sawk, admitted I just want to see Sawk used more. But also in his dex entry it states “If you see a Sawk training in the mountains in its single-minded pursuit of strength, it’s best to quietly pass by.” and it might be neat to see a Sawk put that passion and determination into something other then just raw power.
Toxicroak, fairy type coverage but also this pokemon is noted to be a species related to seismitoad. So maybe Chamelia caught this mon in Reeds marsh. Or perhaps traded with Reed for them (perhaps she gave him Poliwrath in return)

loved everything about this video. just like the wishiwashi t-shirt you made (yes it wasn’t the ace) but use the pokémon as inspiration if you’re feeling stuck in the design of your gym leader. the gym leader should mimic the essence of the pokémon.

I made myself 18 gym leaders too! It was horribly exhausting but a very rewarding experience! Water was actually the last type I covered!! I love your little fish man sm, and the splash badge is gorgeous! Also the amount of sketches you go through for your process is very interesting and inspiring! Can’t wait to see more :)

I think the only, like, criticism I have is prolly that Reed could have used a splotch or two of mud on their outfit, to show off them working in the marsh-y area?
This was such a great video. You really have a great feel for Pokémon character design . A cool idea maybe ... Pic ur favorite of the 18 to be ur champ. Then Pic 4 to be the elite 4. And then maybe 8 to be gym leaders. It would be awesome to see the way you get these characters to interact with each other.

I adore your masseuse fighting gym leader, I love the idea that she used pressure points when she fights others (and maybe teaches her Pokémon is a bit so they also know some!)

im fully obsessed with this video and am so impatient waiting for the future gym leaders. im working on a pokemon region which means i have to also make a leader for every type and this video has been an incredible resource for that journey back into character design, especially when it comes to less-is-more and how to effectively communicate a theme via motifs

in the case of camellia/camilla, while she’s my favorite design in this trio, i think a pop of orange with the purple would make for an even more interesting design and it would also display her fighting type status much better as she’s kind of giving psychic type rn. i also liked the idea of a tattoo sleeve and i think overall you can def push her silhouette more, perhaps giving her more exaggerated biceps or a broader upper half like you mentioned you wanted. overall great work and i absolutely love how you capture the designs of pokemon and mix it with your own style!

Fairy could be some kind performer like a jester clown magician or actor. Or maybe fairy is a librarian and has a magic library where she read fairy tales
Knew I was in for a good watch when the first concept for a water type leader was one of the most unique takes I've seen.
I loved the shonen grandpa concept for the dragon type, I see some subconscious Roshi influence there, lol. I love the idea for his map especially. (World's End Club gang rise up btw)

Okay, I LOVE the water-type gym hair, a FISHTAIL braid?! Perfect.
I love the idea of the masseuse for fighting! I've seen some comments say she could benefit from a pattern and I agree with that. Also, she has big lesbian energy idk why.
I LOVE THE LITTLE DRAGON GRANDPA HE IS MY FAVORITE!! I think I like him so much because he kind of reminds me of Hassel. Like you said, most Dragon gym leaders are superimposing, and Hassel is imposing on the outside, but he's really an emotional art teacher who loves his students and his elite four found family.
Now I want to make my own gym leaders
I have two ideas that can work for a poison type gym leader (if you care to listen). The first is an environmentalist that showcases the harm of pollution, teaching others the importance of recycling (with either Muk or Garbodor as an ace, and trainers would be given the smog badge). The other is a doctor who uses certain pokemon's venoms to make medicine, much like how actual doctors use venom from snakes and spiders depending on the situation (and this gym leader would have either Ariados, Arbok, or Seviper as an ace, and trainers are gifted the virus badge).

These designs were really good! I think that it would be interesting to see Camilla (Carmilla?) side by side with a Fighting Type Gym Leader who is a Construction Worker with elements of Gurdurr's design!
These are a few comments on the Gym Leader Designs.
I think that Camilla should have more elements that read as Mienshao inspired or just a PokeBall motif or two. I think that a pattern would add more visual interest if you want it to look practical.
For the Dragon Type Gym Leader, I think that adding an oversized jacket/coat to act as a cape would an element of grandeur to the silliness and whimsy of his character. Especially if it's got a silly, maybe technicolor pattern.
I think that Reed was well designed and put together. I think that his design really reads as a conservationist and a Water Type Gym Leader.

Unrelated but I don't get it when ppl say Scarlet and Violet look ugly, the games are framey but every video I've seen of Paldea looks really beautiful

Hmm Carmilla design looks a bit lacking... i think the tattoo couldve stayed or something else extra.

Its out of place but i think making her hold a hand grip strengthener to emphasize how STRONG her hands are for massage could be good.
Like. Other fighting trainers train their other muscles or do fighting poses... why not let her be seen training her finger muscles.
(Also a common fighting gym leader trait is to always train.) Just a suggestion

We dont have a TEACHER thats a Dragon gym leader. Like if a lot of them are either leaders or potential leaders... why not make them able to grow and cultivate talent through being a teacher.

How funny would a fighting type gym leader as a soccermom. just the idea of this karen with some baby fighting type pokemon for an early gym. All the other trainers are children and you essentially go onto a football field and beat the snot out of her kids team

I use they/ them pronouns and I don't really know... I'm self taught and most of what I know is from following youtube tutorials
