what is your favorite badge? also! to address the omission of the marsh badge, that badge is a weird case of not being able to think of a way to realistically constructively add to it because its such an enigma as is, to the point where i cant even place what it is other than the obvious. the marsh badge is also an odd name considering the theme, and you'll notice that i didnt change the names of anyone (until the very very end), and just focused on design. im curious to hear your ideas, though!
Honestly i kinda wanna see a video of you just attempting to decipher the deal with the marsh badge and come up with what you’d even NEED to do before getting into fixing it A full paleda redesign set where you can just go hog wild also sounds good i think
Funny thing about the Marsh Badge is there's a theory that it & the Soul Badge Accidently got mixed up during development of Red & Blue (Red & Green in Japan).
Honestly I think the Marsh badge should of been a crystal ball sitting on top of a red pillow or whatever. it definitely makes the type of the badge more clear and less dull and also every time I see the Marsh badge it just screams normal type.
Another fun fact about the Earth Badge is that in Japan, it's simply called the Green Badge. Now, all the Kanto badges are just Color + Badge in Japan, but what I want to draw attention to is the person who gives out the badge in Generation 2. In English, we know this character as "Blue" but in Japan, his name is "Green"! Pretty cute that Green ends up handing you the Green Badge.
To provide a preemptive explanation about the whole "Blue/Green" discrepancy for anyone who may be wondering: The very first versions of Gen1 that were released were Red and _Green_ in Japan, and totally mind-blowing revelation that nobody would ever expect: The Kanto protag and rival are literally just named after each game Blue would then later release there as a light revision, and the western Red and Blue were then modeled after that version when it came time to let the series loose out of Japan This is also why the Gen1 remakes are Fire Red and Leaf Green, instead of Fire Red and Water Blue
@@WhimsicottFanatic That makes a lot of sense. Although, for the Kanto remakes, I'm pretty sure a lot of players would have wanted to go the route of blue because they thought Blastoise looks cooler than Venusaur. But, I mean, come on. Most Pokemon players are just kids, even though plenty of grownups who grew up with Pokemon still play the games, especially in competitive.
4:38~4:44 It's theorized that the reason Bugsy doesn't evolve his Pokemon is because he's studying their level-up moves - specifically to see if they actually get any before they evolve. I quite like this idea, especially since it's stated that he researches Bug-type Pokemon.
Clearly taste is subjective, because I genuinely love the Fairy badge from Kalos, it’s one of my favorites because it is so different (My favorite being the Rainbow badge from Kanto).
It’s still too wide. I would’ve preferred it if the “wings” were slanted up a little more, as if actually “flapping” rather than “gliding” and taking up space
@@not-so-obvious_autism777I agree with that, but him hating on the fairy badge genuinely infuriated me because how can you not see the FAIRY WINGS FOR THE FIRST FAIRY TYPE GYM LEADER.
I actually really love the Psychic Badge of Kalos. It's like a crystal ball with mystic clouds of smoke swirling above it. And not to be mean, but yours kinda looks like those decorated cookies? I do agree that Oracle Badge or something like that would be better than just "Psychic"
i looked back on the video after i read your comment, and you're 1000% right that does look like a cookie thats hilarious haha i think i went a little too hard in the astrological theme, and couldve done more with the fortune telling aspect, so i'll keep that in mind for the future :)
@@toxiquidto fit with the 3d theme, you could have added more sparkly stars to it to fit a more galaxy esque theme. Maybe even add holes like a real constellation has, as constellations does have some holes in the whirlwind of stars. Either that, or you could move the ball slightly down to give it a more “crystal ball” feel while still having the galaxy look as for the original design: add a backplate, make the smoke thicker and more magenta/ dark pink with either purple or pink highlights, and actually connect it to the orb on the bottom. Add some sparkles to the smoke to emphasize the 3d effect while giving the smoke a more magical feel rather than poisonous or choking; and or add the sparkles INSIDE the orb to work better as a PSYCHIC badge, rather than a smoke ball like it does now. You could also personalize the backplates of the badges, to fit more among the other badges the rest of the series has. The psychic one could be more of a smoky glass swirl, making the rest of the badge pop out more and giving a more hypnotic feel. The backplate of the fairy badge could be a traditional 4 segmented butterfly with heavy emphasis on sparkles and glitter to showcase how cute it is. The original electric badge should be heavy on the metallic accents with a cold steel back, feeling like something taken off an invention, with bolts keeping it together. The new electric one doesn't need a backplate, but if it needed one also could have a more “inventor”-y feel. Though with the lightbulb design, I can't really think of anything. Maybe a spiky circle to emphasize the light coming out, with a smooth white back like it's repelling the darkness? Give it a fat gold rim with rivets holding it in place to emphasize the fact an inventor gave it? Nintendo did want those smooth balls on the original design after all, so that could work. The ice badge could have a circular smooth glass rim with a rough cyan or white back, giving a more winter-y feel, while fitting the ICE theme, while also not having 1000 badges with a shiny smooth bottom the original fighting badge could be a massive explosion, with the colors working with that, make the fists actually connect with a spiky ripple in between them to emphasize the impact. Add some silver rims in between the colors to distinguish them better. The new fighting badge isn't the best design you made, as the skate you made is too fat and doesn't really have anything showing the skating part. It looks kinda like a chair, actually. Make the boot thinner, the laces easier to tell apart, and instead of adding wheels, add a rail on one end and sparks on the other, as the perspective doesn't allow for wheels. The backplate emphasizing the momentum, looking like how a fast character usually goes blurry and spiky in anime. I think a light or dark gray should work well, with extensions inside the rim looking like blur likes that typically appear alongside the fast moving character. The grass badge doesn't need one, though to fit with the others, maybe add clouds to the top to show how high you had to climb to even get to the gym, with the clouds sticking out a bit. The beetle one could have a wood grain backplate, or a matte black backplate with a silver spider's web surrounding the beetle with 3 or 4 randomly placed glass balls on the web like in the actual gym. The cliff badge doesn't need one, but it could be a rough square stone slab, possibly with some marbles, akin to wall climbing rocks. Sorry for the very large wall of text. I kinda lost myself while making the backplate suggestions.
@@MrMoron-qn5rx i genuinely really like what you suggested for this! It’s basically a one-size fits all solution that can add individuality to the badges, while still making them work. marvelous idea!
@@toxiquidthanks, I'm glad my overthinking has helped someone! Most of my ideas stem from the fact that the kalos badges are very fragile and very jagged. Don't get me wrong, they look kinda cool, and I know WHY they did this, but they would only work if they're as big as your palm. The ice badge especially doesn't work for me, as it's held up by 6 very tiny pieces of metal. And when I say tiny, I mean TINY. I worked as a machinist, I know ALL about fragile tiny and precise metal, and that design works as much as my brain does half the time: NOT. I WILL go into very deep detail about this one, don't you worry. Almost every single design requires some type of redesign just to not snap into a billion pieces as soon as someone touches them or cause instant bleeding, which is why I decided on the backplates with the extra details, because they all suck. Here's my criticisms of all the original ones. BUG BADGE: has a horn that will snap off way too easily, and feels like what anyone would come up with when you think of "bug badge" add a basic backplate, and it'd work fine enough. CLIFF BADGE: has a million jagged edges, but can at least survive a slight bump against a table, unlike ANOTHER badge ill mention soon. Smooth them out a bit, and it'd work fine. FIGHTING BADGE: it has multiple points of failure and has a lot of sharp edges. My redesigns don't help with the sharpness, but at least you know to look out for the spikes. LEAF BADGE: honestly, it's the best out of the bunch, and the most boring. Give it a little more personality (this one is without backplate) by adding a ring cloud around the top of the plant in the middle of the badge to make it look like a mix of a tree and a sprout, this even adds a message like "big things come from small beginnings" or something. LIGHTNING BADGE: dear Arceus, where do I even begin here. Let's just remember that these things are supposed to be SMALL. Considering that, WHO LET THIS THING THROUGH R&D?! It has 22 different (most of which) being VERY SHARP corners, which on this scare would make it very sharp, the details are tiny and would make it weak. The... lightning bolts? Are flimsy as paper straws and would snap very fast. It looks ugly to boot, and there's not even anything special about it. It looks like some of the scraps you'd get when machining a block of iron into shape getting welded randomly! This thing has a special place in my heart, one where I store all my anger. FAIRY BADGE: aside from the 2 very sharp edges and the pearl in the middle being fragile, it's nothing special. It actually looks like one of those see-though stickers you put on glass to make your house look different. This also removes any personality besides "rainbow" and "butterfly". I don't see a way to fix it besides using your design and or using a backplate that looks like a standard butterfly PSYCHIC BADGE: despite looking more like the poison badge (heavy use of purples, the 3 extra pearls looking like the poison effect in earlier games, and the smoke being reminiscent of an elegant weezing), it's not THAT bad. No very sharp edges that could draw blood, I assume the bottom pearl was connected using special stuff, it won't snap THAT fast besides the 3 extra pearls. If those were inside the smoke, it'd work fine enough... As an EARRING. Why in the name of meowth is this a BADGE? Give it a backplate to make it more of a badge, or redesign it completely. This doesn't fit as a badge. And finally… the ICE BADGE. Ooh boy, do I have something to complain about here. The outer ring is flimsy as can be, being held together by PIXELS, it doesn't fit the ice aesthetic at all, fitting a WATER design better, once the outer ring breaks you have 12 different pieces of sharp jagged metal, as snapped metal tends to be sharper then anything not machined, thus guaranteeing it WILL draw blood eventually, the insignia in the middle fits more as a FIRE badge then an iceberg, it's as 2d as can be, even the FIGHTING badge had more potential for the 3d effect, and the design of the middle part feels more at home as the MINERAL BADGE, as it looks more like a diamond than a snowflake. This was the one badge that convinced me that they needed to add a backplate to ALL the badges and redesign almost all of them, cause THIS SINGLE ONE broke all the rules a badge should have. Remember, this thing in canon is supposed to be SMALL, but even upscaling this one wouldn't work, cause the outer ring is just too weak. And the reason I don't want breakable bits or sharp bits is because 10-year-olds are SUPPOSED to get them. Those 10-year-olds will break them, and will not be smart and hurt themselves on these badges. Most of the other badges I complained about had some redeeming qualities (except the lightning badge), but this thing is so unfixable that you need to start over completely. This one is fundamentally broken. If the lightning badge is the one I spit at weekly, this is the one I would turn to slag, and destroy the slag, so no-one would ever have to deal with its stupidity again.
@@MrMoron-qn5rx I've always felt that the Kalos Badges had very good designs, but Yeah I see your points on some of them, Especially with the Lightning & Fairy Badges. Interesting thoughts on the Psychic Badge never thought about it like that b4.
Oddly enough, I kinda like the Paldea badges. The formulaic designs with the fancy detailing fits the feeling of a old, prestigious academy. I really like that aesthetic. And I feel like photos shown when you earn the badge add some charm to offset that. That being said, I LOVE the idea of each one having a little personal flourish to tie in with the gym leader's personality. It lets the badges keep their formal feel while adding some very charming detail!
I feel it really fits the aesthetic of Geeta's heavily sanitized, overly corporate version of a leauge. Sure the leaders have great personalities and would probably love a personalized badge, but the boss says they all have to follow the template...
So by this logic Team Star made up their own badges to match with the official ones for.. some reason.. despite them rebelling from the school... And... where tf do the Titan badges come from? Did Arven make them? If so.. why? If not... are the badges just stuck up the butt of the Titans and we just find it on the ground?
@@BaconNuke I mean the Team Star badges have the school background but then their logo tagged over it, which seems in line with students rebelling. And yes, Arven literally tells you he modified some replica gym badges to give you as an award and as thanks for helping him.
I wish the badges came together in one of these regions to form like, a key that opens the door to the elite four challenge area, like you've been gathering these weird and wonderful objects all game long, and now those will not just be merits, but are the item that gains you entry into the final challenge.
I had the idea of a region where all the badges were keys and the door to the elite four had multiple locks that fit the keys. Or multiple doors like how R/B/Y worked (there were multiple doors and an NPC next to them going "you can only pass if you have XYZ badge" pretty sure)
the ground badge's original simple design is also reminiscent of a feather, it is probably a leftover spirte from the oeiginal first gym leader (same gym placement) who was flying type
I vehemently oppose your opinion on the Kalosian Badges! I love those ones, so different and unique compared to the others and the shiny crystals in them give them that extra touch. The Psychic Badge being a crystal ball folds in not just Olympia's own foresight but also Anistar City's own landmark of a giant crystal (though the name does need changing) and the Iceberg Badge having actual water in it is so cool to me. Granted some could still be given a change to better suit the Leader rather than the Type. Namely the Bug and Rumble Badges. Also the Voltage Badge is a complete outlier, the lightbulb is much better. I'd like to throw my hat into the ring for Gen 9 redesigns while I'm here: Bug: Web Badge, top down web pattern on a dark brown bumpy shape to look like icing on a cake or muffin. Grass: Briar Badge, Brassius' thorn whip in a certain shape, perhaps a spiral. Electric: Eyecatch Badge, a pair of eyes stuck to the ends of a magnet coming from her Magnemite hair-things and her intro line of catching eyes in her Electroweb. Water: Sushi Badge, a fish split into three pieces. Normal: Normal Badge, literally just a disk. It's Larry, I don't think he could draw a smiley face if he tried. Ghost: Grave Badge, a gravestone with a black circle on it to look like a speaker. The last two were actually done pretty good by Toxiquid, just use them more or less and name them the Beauty and Slalom Badges.
And that’s a-okay! There are so many badges and it’s valid to have those opinions. I like the concepts overall with the kalos badges, but my reasoning was that I don’t think they fit that mold so to speak. I couldn’t imagine anyone being able to wear the fairy badge (and to a lesser extent psychic), but the designs themselves aren’t bad. Also! Great names for the paldea badges. Very creative
@@toxiquid I think they were designed to be more like brooches than just pin badges. (Also, I have to ask, in what world does the Fairy Badge not convey its type well ? I mean, even without taking its painfully unoriginal name into account*, it looks like a bright pink pair of elegant and ethereal butterfly wings, for Arceus' sake !) * They should have take their cue from the French version, where it is known as the "Nymph Badge". Or, to match Sylveon, maybe it could have been the "Sylph Badge"...
Your redesigns are so good omg! Also, Koga's badge is a sakura leaf which is at least a little more ninja-y (or at least japanese themed) than a heart. Also also! Personally, I really LOVE the gen 6 bades! Especially Fairy and Psychic (tho tbf, yea, Psychic could just as well represent a poison cloud). And I feel like with the Lighning badge, a design with gears would have been really fitting for an inventor.
I honestly really love most of your improvements for the badges (that aren't from Kalos), and I even get your criticisms for the Psichic Badge (and even the fairy badge but only that it's too wide). I can't really make out what the rumble badge is supposed to be after your redesign, but a rollerskating badge would be pretty cool, and the voltage badge was perfect already, you can't change my mind. A V for Volt that also looks like a light cone, with the added benefit of shimmering, which radiates light that can also be read as electricity due to it's chaoticness. Not to mention it's very recognizable due to it's fun silhouette.
Finally, after ten thousand years we're free! Time for new Toxiquid! Love to see you back dude. Great redesigns, great video. (Loved seeing the random Samurai Megazord/Shinken-Oh btw lol)
Here's some names I came up with for your all-new Paldea badges: Cocoon (Katy - Well, you can't call it a "Hive," so you may as well go with the cocoon for metamorphosis.) Contrast (Brassius - I was going to call it the Vista Badge, but I figured it might be more fitting to refer to color contrast.) Network (Iono - Every streamer needs their network platform.) Dive (Kofu - I was torn between the crest of a wave and cetacean breaching, but then I looked up "dive" and found no badge, so I went with that.) Routine (Larry - Any other term would either be two-word, inappropriate, or dark, so I stuck to routine, which Larry is all too familiar with.) Chant (Ryme - Ghost is easy to see as the "magic from beyond" type, especially with Hex Maniacs, and plenty of magic involves chanting. In addition, chants are the kind of thing Ryme's fans could do in anticipation or applause.) Mesmer (Tulip - Mesmerizing beauty and piercing gaze wouldn't be odd compliments for a beautician or a model.) Slope (Grusha - it fits the image, it fits the theme, and it fits the Type.)
the graphic design major in me was nodding along to this video, good design changes!! i can tell that you really understand visual language and production design (the "add a back plate!" was so real lol especially all the tiny changes of sizing and scale). and like typical graphic design feedback, there was a compliment sandwich for each one with "yes great", "hmm, idk abt that but i see the vision", "love the render/mockup it goes crazy" lmao. great job!!!
Valerie's badge is probably my favourite of all the recent badges 😅 The pearl in the centre doesn't necessarily have to be a full sphere, it could be a cabochon shape where it's domed on one side and flat on the other.
Here in the UK, a few years ago we changed all our coins. Each coin is a puzzle piece and they come together to form the coat of arms: shaped like a shield. Would've been cool if his redesign did that since he hates circles so much
I actually rather like the Legend badge and how it is a bit abstract and up for interpretation. To me I always sort of just saw it as a sort of explosion, blast, with the long spike being there to either make it fit with the rest of the vertical badges or it being like it's originating from a dragon's mouth like the move Dragon Rage, that sort of explosion/attack being the reason for the red circle. For the matter of the black and grey I always saw it as black and white but they didn't want it to clash too much and instead went for more cohesion. I found it cool that the last gym badge you got, (at least in the first black and white) had some of the theming of the game in it, contrast but in being part of the same thing together cohesively. Which also fit with the town and gym leader, with the town either seeming more in the future with an older gym leader Drayden or more in the past with a youngster gym leader Iris, with Iris being Drayden's daughter and him being her dad really showcasing the contrast and cooperation. Though I do think that the badge would look cooler if they went for a more standing out and contrasting white even if it went a little bit against the color scheme.
I like to think that the legend badge although we don't have a clear idea of what it is it's all up to the players perception. Master Drayden's Gym has the White and the Black dragons symbolizing truth and ideals and the gray is the middle man, your perception of what you perceive it as. I also like the red gem because you focused in on that and it gives you the thought of what it could be and that's for you to decide. Whether you see a dragon or a weapon or an achievement of the final gym overcomed. I feel like showing a simple design of a dragon would be okay, however it being the final gym and one of the high moments where the Battle of Truth Versus ideal starts to Peak you'll become a legend yourself-- Legends don't exactly take one shape or form so thats all up to how you precive a legend as. But that is more so my head can and slash Theory--a badge theory. 😊
I like a lot of these suggestions! Some of these aren't even badges I had a problem with like the mineral badge, or some of the kalos badge designs, but you had some great ideas. I still have this funny feeling, like. you're not wrong. but you're not exactly right. I see tons of videos of people talking about how things in the pokemon games should be different. everybody is operating on a very modern outlook of how pokemon should operate. we're using a language that has been developed over the course of the entire series, and when you look back at older games, it makes them look out of place. but I don't think it necessarily means it's wrong. It looks like the types we're only starting to be color coordinated in gen 4. And I think the hive badge is a fine design.
tbh i like the legend badge, sure its pretty abstract but i think the idea was in the shape language, dragons are always depicted with spiky appendages all over their body so i think its a pretty effective design
I actually really like the Kalos badges for their unique designs. Gonna be using them as a basis for my region's badges, and they aren't typed gyms either, allowing for more creativity with the gym leader's personality and surrounding city.
Allow me to give my pitches for renaming the badges. For Kalos: I think you nailed it with Pixie and Oracle, but I didn't like Beetle. How about Scuttle Badge instead? For Galar: First, the badges in both games: Field Badge, Harbor Badge, Mortar Badge, Magic Badge, Punk Badge, Wrath Badge. For the version-exclusives I thought it'd be neat if they shared a name. Fighting and Ghost could both be the Crumble Badge, and Rock and Ice could be the Mountain Badge. If each must be different Ghost could be the Haunt Badge and Ice could be the Snow Badge. For Paldea: I never actually played these ones but I'm still gonna try my best. Also, only doing gym badges. Nest Badge (cuz she's motherly and Hive was taken), Blossom Badge (something about beauty or something), Wire Badge (like live wire), Steam Badge (for the steamed crabs we're having mmmm steamed crabs), Standard Badge (cuz you're meeting his standards), Dirge Badge (look it up), Vision Badge (future vision, clothing vision, idk something there), and Slush Badge.
Kinda late to the party but I love this video! It was amazingly edited and so fun to watch from start to finnish. Also the fact that you tried to replicate each of the styles for badges even making 3d renders of the "newer" ones was great and overall all of the redesigns where so good. I especially love what you did to the paldea badges really wish those were real
I'm honestly impressed how much effort you put into this video it's so good. The animations, art style, gags, ect, are amazing I love this. Keep up the fantastic work Toxiquid 😉👍 Also fun fact about the earth badge, Giovanni was originally going to be planned to be a flying type specialist and if you look at the earth badge more closely, it looks like a feather which I find it interesting 😁
I was watching this video late at night, as like a side thing while doodling, and 'I can't see you let me see you' caught me so off guard I may have woken up the entire house.
No WAY you’re saying the Kalos badges are bad. The prettiest badges in all 9 regions??? Sure they’re elaborate but they look so good!!! So shiny!!!!! SO COLORFUL!!!!!!! And you like the BROWN BRICKS?????? Absolutely unacceptable. Korrina’s badge is by far the best looking fighting badge imo, Clemont’s badge is super cool looking even though it’s asymmetrical, I get where you’re coming from with Olympia’s badge being ambiguous, but it’s still beautiful!!!! I’m not even going to comment on the fact that you dislike the fairy badge. It’s pink any shiny and therefore flawless. No hate, we can agree to disagree, I just find it funny how opposite our taste in badges are. Nice video!
A day in which Toxiquid uploads is a very good day. Absolutely wonderful video as usual, man! I love it! These badge redesigns are awesome! I especially love the Legend Badge rework and how you gave it an actually coherent shape. Keep up the amazing work!
Stellar editing and overall presentation, oh my god. For a good while you have been a bit of an inspiration to me, and I like to think I had almost caught up, but you have just raised the bar to a WHOLE OTHER LEVEL!! I can't even begin to imagine how much work and time this video took to make!!! But it trully paid off! Looking forward to see you flex your skills some more!
I was not expecting too much from this vid. Prob just a png that cycles through 10 expressions, the rules, maybe a speed paint of redesigning the new badges. but no. NO. I got so much more than that!! Love the extra effort placed in this video and how fun and bouncy it is. You've earned a subscriber!
13:01 i think that medal tries to resemble a crystal ball that fortune tellers uses for read the future and the smoke is a representation of how Fortune tellers tell the future in other media. The desing is bad tho but i can see what they tried to make while desing it
This was fantasic! The mixed media animation is super stylish, and that opening sequence deserves a lot of appreciation: It's Very satisfying to view it frame-by-frame 🤘 I found the Unovan badge designs also carry a lot of energy and motion, and the redesigns of the Legend/Wave badges capture that motif a lot more effectively than the originals. This was also my first time seeing the Galar badges and uh. Yikes!
the opening scene took a week to animate on its own. i filmed myself doing the reference and tweaked the timing for it to be snappier. considering that 90% of the rest of the video was made with a new rig i made in harmony, it was definitely a lot tougher to do haha
Looking at it closer, I think the Legend Badge is mean to be a wizard's staff, with a lot of staff designs having skinny hilt and large and more ornate head with a jewel in the center; and wizards/sorcery are commonly seen along dragons which are both stuff of "Legend". So yeah, having a more dragon-esque design would fit far better for a Gym argutely the most themed around dragons in the series, if my theory is correct, I can at least see the thought process for the design. Also I am surprised you Mr "I Hate Circular Badges" never mentioned the Marsh Badge considering it is just...a gold circle with a slightly smaller circle inside. Outside of the very weird name choice (it is called the Gold Badge in the original versions with makes a bit more sense), even if you want to say that its based on a coin and Saffron City is based on Tokyo which is a wealthy area; it doesn't really convey Sabrina's psychic theme all too well, the design is still very basic, and could easily apply to nearly any Gym Leader you could put in Saffron City with how broad the theme is (arguably works better with someone like Giovanni who is a crime boss).
in an earlier draft of the video, I absolutely laid into the marsh badge. However, it wasnt constructive and I couldn’t really think of how to “fix” it, other than completely making a new one, which wasn’t the mission statement for the video. As for the legend badge, I think that this is a really interesting idea! I personally don’t think it’s a wizard staff, but I can see how someone could interpret it that way.
@toxiquid Didn't you basically make a new badges for one like the Soul and Rumble Badge though? Plus at very least if you had to keep the same circular shape for the Marsh Badge, they could have stylized it to make look like a pendulum (or at least like a swirl in the middle) similar to what Hypno has; though ironically Sabrina never uses a Hypno in the original games. Which would tie into Sabrina's Psychic Typing and an item used to manipulate and control others would track with her character considering she straight up has a whip in in her original Red & Blue sprite and turned people into her literal dolls in the anime.
My idea for badges in a US-based region I'm creating for fun, is to shape them like the city the gym is found in, and have the badge case be a foldable magnetic map. They'd be like state-shaped magnets you can find at truck stops in the US. And for cities without gyms, they'd have non-league badges, which would be obtained through cute challenges and side quests and stuff. Like, for example, in Nowhere, New Hulbury (a glorified truck stop near New Hulbury City), it'd be given to you by the local Ranger after completing wilderness survival training.
This is a fantastic video! I’ve never seen your channel before but this video’s got insane production value. I can’t imagine how long it takes to make these, the scene walking around Castelia City’s actual model was super cool
this video was definitely the longest for me to make by a wide margin, however that came with the caveat of making a reusable rig for future videos. that took around 4 weeks. the animation itself took around 6-7 weeks, with the intro being one on its own. the editing itself took around 3 weeks, but trying to figure out the style took around a week on its own. and modeling and all that took a week as well. all in all, combining stuff like research, writing, rewriting, and various challenges like 3d model acquisition (thanks DJ!), this video took around 6-8 months to make on and off. keep in mind that this is a personal project on top of my full time work and school as well. the next one should take less time hopefully :)
If I were to make the Paldean Gym Leader’s badges, I’d make them a thing that relates to the gym leader while still including the icon of the type in some way. For example; Katy’s badge is a muffin that has the pattern of the beetle used as the bug types icon, while Kofu has a badge with a veluza leaping out of water (like the bass pro shop logo’s fish) with the veluza looking like it was made with a bunch of teardrops, the water type icon. Larry’s can stay the same though, since he’s supposed to be normal. I guess the one he gives you is upside down, or has a manufacturing defect.
1:44 Legend badge is perfectly fine. It's an abstraction. Stop overthinking it. Redesign sucked. 2:40 Wave badge fine. Redo is fine. 3:19 Preferred the original mineral badge. 3:50 Let us have some variety. Hives are yellow not 5:17 to redesign the cobble badge you just needed to taper in the orange bits towards the short end to make it clearer they're crossing fists. Add a tiny square or diamond for the thumb to make it crystal clear.
Actually, Crasher Wake does have some relation to the Swamp theme. If you look at his costume, it does take some inspiration from Swampert. This reinforced by his beta sprite, which depicts him wearing a Swampert mask.
2:04 I think the badge is ment to represent the major legendary pokemon of unova with the gem in the center for the light stone because: 1. Their dragons 2. They are white and black
As a jhoto fan I don't understand how you can have issues with the hive badge or mineral badge, but you don't have a problem with the plain badge, the most boring badge in all of pokemon.
Pretty sure the fairy badge was supposed to be fairy wings. They should have just made it more of a butterfly shape so it could be more square and narrow. I do have an issue with your mineral badge since the original was supposed to be a steel plate. The crystal doesn't give off the impression of steel. It would work better to have it be something that reflects the properties of steel like a cog for its use in industry, helmet for it's durability, or even a magnet just because it is a magnetic material.
The Voltage Badge looks like someone put a slice of pizza in the microwave for too long, and it somehow exploded. Yeah, your idea for a redesign is simple and looks good, and I like it.
I think the reason why the ground badge is so grass type themed is because it is. Team Rocket took over the grass gym and didn't bother to change the badge. Also I love the kalos fairy badge. And the kalos badges aren't badges. They are brooches because they are in france, birthplace of Hatue Couture.
The voltage badge is supposed to be assymetric and be sporadic, because that's howbelectric sparks work. And lack of identity? Are we looking at the same badge? The sparks jumping out makes it special, the only thing I can give you is the smaller shape, which yeah, is pretty bad.
I think making the fairy badge look more like an actual brooch could work- think hawk moths miraculous from miraculous ladybug. Gem in the center with the wings made out of opal and a gold trim would look AMAZING
i love the detail that valerie’s badge (the new one) kinda looks like a fairy win, which would make it not only match the gym leader but also the typing
I have literally never given gym badges any thought at all, yet I think pretty much think all of these are way better than the originals and should be in the games! The lightbulb one for Kalos was truly incredible. Aside from that, this is by far your best video. The jokes were good and timed perfectly, the voice-over was good and energetic, the music choice and sound effects fit really well, the animations were smooth and flowed really nicely (that first one with the gym trainers was an actual masterpiece), and THE 3D MODELS!? This might be one of my favorite TH-cam channels and it’s such a crime that you have so few subscribers. I’m so excited to see your upcoming stuff!
Unova's dragon badge really isn't that hard to understand, you threw out a lot of ideas when the idea which it is was like the second one. Red Gem is eye, spikes are on the bottom representing the beard of the dragon, literally exactly like the dragon statues you stand on in the gym. It didn't need changing, next. Watched the rest and the same problem popped up with simple explainations you ignored plus weird restrictions.
I kind of knew that the asterisk would be all of Paldea. This to me was the creative rot of gym badges. Yes I understand that there are badges for all 18 types in this game but even just the little add ons from this video would help. If just putting UI elements on a circle wasn't bad enough, the name of the badge is just the name of the type. Seriously I know it's small but that's what I liked about badges. They tried to rep the type in an interesting way. Also fun fact on the name topic. If you don't count Team Star's Ruchbah Squad badge, Fairy has literally never had a badge name that wasn't it's own, even in a region with different badge names.
I liked Galar’s diversion from eight separate badges into “eight badges to make a whole”. I do agree the designs could’ve been way cooler, but just that step was awesome for me when I earned my first badge and realized what they were doing
Feel like the Team Star badges could get personal touches like the Paldea gym badges do. e.g. Giacomo puts a little set of headphones on his, Mela's badge has a large bootprint on it, etc.
The thing about Kanto's gym badges is that they represent the city the gym is located instead of the gym's specialty type. That is why Soul badge is Fuchsia, Marsh badge is Saffron, and Earth badge is Viridian. Celadon City gym is the only outlier of this pattern with the Rainbow badge.
This has me hoping that Gen 10 brings back unique badge design. It didn't occure to me till now how we've had 2 gens in a row with the badges looking like a set of identical identities.
honestly that was the main reason i made this video. i LOVE pokemon badges. was the whole reason i started digital art, so it saddens me to see what its become
The production value is off the charts, chum. Good show! 🥳🎉 I hope they reinvigorate badge designs in the next generation, because while the type icons they have now are super slick, giving them distinct shapes and icons makes the badges much more memorable. If they follow a few Toxiquid design principles, they should be on the right track! Haha
what is your favorite badge?
also! to address the omission of the marsh badge, that badge is a weird case of not being able to think of a way to realistically constructively add to it because its such an enigma as is, to the point where i cant even place what it is other than the obvious. the marsh badge is also an odd name considering the theme, and you'll notice that i didnt change the names of anyone (until the very very end), and just focused on design. im curious to hear your ideas, though!
I think the marsh badge is either repersenting hypno, or it is supossed to be a fighting type badge because of the dojo
7:40, I think Iono’s badge should have a lightning bolt sticking in the star
Honestly i kinda wanna see a video of you just attempting to decipher the deal with the marsh badge and come up with what you’d even NEED to do before getting into fixing it
A full paleda redesign set where you can just go hog wild also sounds good i think
I love how since sun and moon have no gym badges the trainer is just holding up nothing.
I mean, they are holding the typed Z-Crystals, so that’s something
Bewear is like “are you pointing at something?”
You get the power of Gods!
The z crystals
They hold the crystals...
Norman's badge design actually works when you consider it's called the Balance Badge and resembles a scale.
To provide a preemptive explanation about the whole "Blue/Green" discrepancy for anyone who may be wondering:
The very first versions of Gen1 that were released were Red and _Green_ in Japan, and totally mind-blowing revelation that nobody would ever expect: The Kanto protag and rival are literally just named after each game
Blue would then later release there as a light revision, and the western Red and Blue were then modeled after that version when it came time to let the series loose out of Japan
This is also why the Gen1 remakes are Fire Red and Leaf Green, instead of Fire Red and Water Blue
Wow I didn't know that it was just the Color + Badge that's pretty cool!
Its also suppose to look like a fairy with the orb in the middle being the body like how they are depicted in games like The legend of zelda series
Your elemental power is *green*
4:38~4:44 It's theorized that the reason Bugsy doesn't evolve his Pokemon is because he's studying their level-up moves - specifically to see if they actually get any before they evolve. I quite like this idea, especially since it's stated that he researches Bug-type Pokemon.
"Change your name, change your name, CHANGE YOUR NAME"
100% agree. It's not even that difficult to have a name better than "insert type here" badge.
Especially as this unfortunately has given us three "Fairy Badges".
@@amesstarline5482and no fairy type badges that aren't ;~;
I hope this is the next video. This irks me so much about the recent games.
@@amesstarline5482and 2 psychic badges
If I were a fairy type gym leader I'd call mine either the Moonlight Badge or The Pixie Badge.
Clearly taste is subjective, because I genuinely love the Fairy badge from Kalos, it’s one of my favorites because it is so different (My favorite being the Rainbow badge from Kanto).
And just kinda feels perfect it'a a pair of fairy wings with a fairy in the middle
@@bellingtoned yeah!! that's exactly what they are, fairy wings, and it's quite obvious too. idk how he missed that
It’s still too wide.
Galar fairy badge does the wings thing way better.@@sunnydays07
I actually really love the Psychic Badge of Kalos. It's like a crystal ball with mystic clouds of smoke swirling above it. And not to be mean, but yours kinda looks like those decorated cookies? I do agree that Oracle Badge or something like that would be better than just "Psychic"
i looked back on the video after i read your comment, and you're 1000% right that does look like a cookie thats hilarious haha
i think i went a little too hard in the astrological theme, and couldve done more with the fortune telling aspect, so i'll keep that in mind for the future :)
@@toxiquidto fit with the 3d theme, you could have added more sparkly stars to it to fit a more galaxy esque theme. Maybe even add holes like a real constellation has, as constellations does have some holes in the whirlwind of stars. Either that, or you could move the ball slightly down to give it a more “crystal ball” feel while still having the galaxy look
as for the original design: add a backplate, make the smoke thicker and more magenta/ dark pink with either purple or pink highlights, and actually connect it to the orb on the bottom.
The ice badge could have a circular smooth glass rim with a rough cyan or white back, giving a more winter-y feel, while fitting the ICE theme, while also not having 1000 badges with a shiny smooth bottom
the original fighting badge could be a massive explosion, with the colors working with that, make the fists actually connect with a spiky ripple in between them to emphasize the impact.
I don't see a way to fix it besides using your design and or using a backplate that looks like a standard butterfly
PSYCHIC BADGE: despite looking more like the poison badge (heavy use of purples, the 3 extra pearls looking like the poison effect in earlier games, and the smoke being reminiscent of an elegant weezing), it's not THAT bad.
Funfact! Pretty sure Giovanni was originally supposed to be a flying type trainer which makes sense because the badge is shaped like an feather
@@BaconNukearven made them, he says it himself
I wish the badges came together in one of these regions to form like, a key that opens the door to the elite four challenge area, like you've been gathering these weird and wonderful objects all game long, and now those will not just be merits, but are the item that gains you entry into the final challenge.
🤫
I had the idea of a region where all the badges were keys and the door to the elite four had multiple locks that fit the keys. Or multiple doors like how R/B/Y worked (there were multiple doors and an NPC next to them going "you can only pass if you have XYZ badge" pretty sure)
They ALMOST had that idea in Gen V, with the badge check gates. Especially Black and White 1, that was the definition of a spectacle and build-up.
"I CANT SEE YOU LET ME SEE YOU" is the best line in my option 14:16
Was just about to comment I LOVE how frantic that line is
the ground badge's original simple design is also reminiscent of a feather, it is probably a leftover spirte from the oeiginal first gym leader (same gym placement) who was flying type
I'd like to throw my hat into the ring for Gen 9 redesigns while I'm here:
Bug: Web Badge, top down web pattern on a dark brown bumpy shape to look like icing on a cake or muffin.
@@toxiquid
I think they were designed to be more like brooches than just pin badges. (Also, I have to ask, in what world does the Fairy Badge not convey its type well ? I mean, even without taking its painfully unoriginal name into account*, it looks like a bright pink pair of elegant and ethereal butterfly wings, for Arceus' sake !)
* They should have take their cue from the French version, where it is known as the "Nymph Badge". Or, to match Sylveon, maybe it could have been the "Sylph Badge"...
It really sucks that the last 2 sets of badges has been kinda boring

In regards to Valerie’s badge I always thought they were made to look like some kind of weird Japanese fairy wings.

I can't really make out what the rumble badge is supposed to be after your redesign, but a rollerskating badge would be pretty cool,
and the voltage badge was perfect already, you can't change my mind.

Here's some names I came up with for your all-new Paldea badges:
Cocoon (Katy - Well, you can't call it a "Hive," so you may as well go with the cocoon for metamorphosis.)
Contrast (Brassius - I was going to call it the Vista Badge, but I figured it might be more fitting to refer to color contrast.)
Network (Iono - Every streamer needs their network platform.)
Dive (Kofu - I was torn between the crest of a wave and cetacean breaching, but then I looked up "dive" and found no badge, so I went with that.)
Routine (Larry - Any other term would either be two-word, inappropriate, or dark, so I stuck to routine, which Larry is all too familiar with.)
Chant (Ryme - Ghost is easy to see as the "magic from beyond" type, especially with Hex Maniacs, and plenty of magic involves chanting. In addition, chants are the kind of thing Ryme's fans could do in anticipation or applause.)
Mesmer (Tulip - Mesmerizing beauty and piercing gaze wouldn't be odd compliments for a beautician or a model.)
Slope (Grusha - it fits the image, it fits the theme, and it fits the Type.)
I actually like the circular badges, because I always imagined them not as pin but as coins you flip in your hand.
the graphic design major in me was nodding along to this video, good design changes!! i can tell that you really understand visual language and production design (the "add a back plate!" was so real lol especially all the tiny changes of sizing and scale). and like typical graphic design feedback, there was a compliment sandwich for each one with "yes great", "hmm, idk abt that but i see the vision", "love the render/mockup it goes crazy" lmao. great job!!!
the visual transitions and designs are really nice! keep making more of this kind of stuff. please!
Valerie's badge is probably my favourite of all the recent badges 😅 The pearl in the centre doesn't necessarily have to be a full sphere, it could be a cabochon shape where it's domed on one side and flat on the other.
Exactly, just use the gems as inset into a backplate or sm.
8:23 I actually really like what galar did with the badges. Having them all combine into one thing was really cool.
I love the chaotic nature of the voltage badge and im my opinion you ruined it by making it too boring (the same goes for the psychic badge)
The Galar badges allude to british coins, where the backs have bits of the coat of arms that line up with each other. They’re still badly named.
Trust me i tried asking friends who dont play pokemon with that pyshcic badge in Kalos and they said Ghost or Poison and had no idea it was psychic
I actually really like the Kalos badges for their unique designs. Gonna be using them as a basis for my region's badges, and they aren't typed gyms either, allowing for more creativity with the gym leader's personality and surrounding city.
Once again improving and showing the great work that you do. Loved the little gags. Keep up the amazing work!
13:16 ...that's the most on the nose thing. The original badge sent perfectly that mysterious feel because like you said: she's a fortune teller !
I'm honestly impressed how much effort you put into this video it's so good. The animations, art style, gags, ect, are amazing I love this. Keep up the fantastic work Toxiquid 😉👍
Also fun fact about the earth badge, Giovanni was originally going to be planned to be a flying type specialist and if you look at the earth badge more closely, it looks like a feather which I find it interesting 😁
5:12 sorry to break it but I think the cobble badge is a picture of two VERY oversimplified hands going diagonally up and diagonally down
4:14 It’s actually olive ;( a very common shade of green.
13:01 i think that medal tries to resemble a crystal ball that fortune tellers uses for read the future and the smoke is a representation of how Fortune tellers tell the future in other media. The desing is bad tho but i can see what they tried to make while desing it
I love the redesigns, but I feel like the Kalos badges could be kept as they are if only they were given backplates.
This was fantasic! The mixed media animation is super stylish, and that opening sequence deserves a lot of appreciation: It's Very satisfying to view it frame-by-frame 🤘
I found the Unovan badge designs also carry a lot of energy and motion, and the redesigns of the Legend/Wave badges capture that motif a lot more effectively than the originals.
I designed one for a grass type one that is just a JPEG of a mildly stylized leaf. I call it the Foliage Badge.
No one’s gonna talk about the mariokart joke, and HOW GOOD IT LOOKS?
So a crystal ball and the cosmic mists of time are less fitting for a cosmic fortune teller then a generic swirl?
Hives are yellow not
5:17 to redesign the cobble badge you just needed to taper in the orange bits towards the short end to make it clearer they're crossing fists. Add a tiny square or diamond for the thumb to make it crystal clear.
Good job on the redesigns except for the Kalos badges, I could not disagree more on the fairy badge. The og design was peak.
Actually, Crasher Wake does have some relation to the Swamp theme. If you look at his costume, it does take some inspiration from Swampert. This reinforced by his beta sprite, which depicts him wearing a Swampert mask.
4:49 the balance badge represents the balance of the region like the water and earth
As someone who generally loves circular shapes, what did circles do to you man?
Also, feels bad, man. Kalos were always my favorite badges!
Isn’t that Balance Badge supposed to represent Balance? I guess replacing it with a Yin-Yang symbol would be appropriate.
2:04 I think the badge is ment to represent the major legendary pokemon of unova with the gem in the center for the light stone because:
1. Their dragons
2. They are white and black
As a jhoto fan I don't understand how you can have issues with the hive badge or mineral badge, but you don't have a problem with the plain badge, the most boring badge in all of pokemon.
That's music from Pokémon Battle Revolution! My very first Pokémon game! It really needs a remake
Holy **** this video is incredibly high quality this is genuinely amazing. Im not even into Pokémon but this is just eye candy. Will send to a friend!
The Voltage Badge looks like someone put a slice of pizza in the microwave for too long, and it somehow exploded. Yeah, your idea for a redesign is simple and looks good, and I like it.
Your redesigns appart (which are great btw), the whole video itself is incredibly appealing. Great art, animation, editing... 10s across the board.
Imma be real with you dude. The Koga/Janine smoke cloud looks like cotton candy
14:18 um...what about the clear snowflake shape ? Plus it makes sense there's a bit of water, ice is basicaly water but solidified
Oh man, that walk animation in the nova city was CLEAN!! Great job!
The Voltage Badge is awesome fym
I love it how the Voltage badge looks a bit like a lemon slice, which Clemont is often associated with
I love that you described the ground badge as the giavanni badge
Since my favorite type is Fairy, my Badge would be a Bloomed Pink Flower with a magic crystal in the center of the bud.
I love how the animations on the video, *SUPER* underrated at only 3K likes YOU NEED MORE ATTENTION
Clippy Toxiquid my beloved
you are the first person in this comments section to point out clippy. thank you for watching the video haha
The gray part for the fighting kalos gym is a skating rink.
The fairy badge in kalos are fairy wings.
Every annual upload this dudes videos get better snd better
I liked Galar’s diversion from eight separate badges into “eight badges to make a whole”. I do agree the designs could’ve been way cooler, but just that step was awesome for me when I earned my first badge and realized what they were doing
I don’t think I’ve ever subscribed to a channel so quickly before, good lord this is well made
Saw your channel in the Pokémon colab animation, and found this! You are a wonderful TH-cam, have a new subscriber!
Fun fact: the earth badge was originally meant to be for a flying gym, but it got changed to ground, hence it looking like a feather.
Feel like the Team Star badges could get personal touches like the Paldea gym badges do.
e.g. Giacomo puts a little set of headphones on his, Mela's badge has a large bootprint on it, etc.
You were cooking until you made Bugsys badge just another green badge. Lost all of its uniqueness
Clemont looks so offended in that thumbnail. Why'd you do my boy dirty like that?
The thing about Kanto's gym badges is that they represent the city the gym is located instead of the gym's specialty type. That is why Soul badge is Fuchsia, Marsh badge is Saffron, and Earth badge is Viridian. Celadon City gym is the only outlier of this pattern with the Rainbow badge.
The “CHANGE YOUR NAME” bit at the end is my favorite - seriously so disappointing that they’ve just given up on unique badge designs and names.
I appreciate how you also made Clemonts badge look like the inside of a citrus fruit.
I loved the animation, amazing video :D
The production value is off the charts, chum. Good show! 🥳🎉
I hope they reinvigorate badge designs in the next generation, because while the type icons they have now are super slick, giving them distinct shapes and icons makes the badges much more memorable. If they follow a few Toxiquid design principles, they should be on the right track! Haha
