I've played the trilogy so many times and I still get teary eyed when Mordin sacrifices himself. For me it's the most emotional moment in video game history, largely because he is/was perhaps my favorite team member. Big hugs to you Lucy ❤ "Spoilers" about the Shroud scene below: The scene can end in different ways and it is actually possible to save Mordin! But for that to happen, Maelon's data has to be destroyed and Eve will have to die.. and a few other bad things, such as dooming the Krogan race. In the end you just get him as a war asset.
There is a way for Mordin to survive... but it comes at a huge cost to even have the option available. You'd have to make some pretty horrific decisions in both ME1 and 2. If you killed Wrex in ME1, and didn't keep the data from Mordin's loyalty mission in ME2, you'd have the option available to convince Mordin that the Krogan are too great of a threat without the stabilization of Wrex and Eve (she doesn't survive synthesizing the cure if you don't save the data). Also because Wrex's brother Wreave would be calling the shots
What I think makes Mordin a truly amazing character is not just what changed in his views of the genophage but also what DIDN'T change: regardless of whether he saw it as the right or wrong thing to do, he always saw the genophage as HIS responsibility. Once it showed signs of the Krogan adapting to it, he went back to alter it since he thought it was the right thing to do. And when he finally understood it was wrong, he gave literally everything to stop it. This is even reflected in his speech pattern. His clipped, third person sentences make him sound detached from the world. Yet it's only in connection to the genophage that he EVER directly mentions himself. "Had to be ME. Someone else could have gotten it wrong." "I made a mistake". RIP Mordin. Truly one of my favorite video game characters of all time.
I notice your weapons haven't been upgraded - next to the names of the weapons, there is a Roman numeral 1 next to them. Down in the cargo hold near Cortez, there are 2 consoles. One is to buy stuff from the shops without having to go there. The other is an upgrade store, where you can pay money to increase the Roman numeral next to the name of your weapons. This increases damage per projectile, reduces weight, and increases magazine capacity. Next time you're on the Normandy, I highly recommend you go down there and pay for the upgrades for the weapons you and your squadmates are using. In fact, it's pretty much required to be able to do any of the missions in the late game. Your enemies just get too hard to kill if you don't, and you can't use your powers very often, which gets very important later in the game.
I would avoid doing any of the non-upgrade purchases while on the Normandy though, because of 10% markup on everything...if that's new weapon or weapon mod you need just go shopping on the Citadel...weapon upgrades themselves on another hand is a different story...
In my 40 odd years of gaming this is the only time I've cried because someone died. Fantastic character arc, voice acting, visual depiction and that bloody music are just fantastic.

I've played this a dozen times and cried maybe twice as many because of other player's playthroughs. It's one of the defining moments in the series and perhaps one of the best character arc conclusions. I can confidently say that the only time I went through this without crying as much was when I accidentally skipped listening to the Gilbert and Sullivan song in ME2 and Mordin didn't sing here but rather said a phrase. But it's so perfect an ending with the song that I'm glad most players get it.
Mordin was at the end of his life already, fifty years old, ten years past the life expectancy of a Salarian, which is quite rare. He knew he was at the end of the road, and even though he was terrified of dying, the way his voice wavered as he sang, he made the sacrifice for the next generation, and we love him for it.
You may already have figured this out, but some people sometimes have difficulties with it: The Dalatrass trying to convince you about the Genophage isn't the Salarian Councelor you talk to after the mission. Valern is more "Eh, what can i do about it, your choice, i don't really care". He's more cold headed.
This was one of my favorite missions. The most trouble I had was getting stepped on. It took me much longer than I care to admit to watch for the shadows. 🐚🐚🐚🐚🐚

Spoilers for alternate ways this could have turned out: . . . . It's always torn me up that you can't save both Mordin and Wrex (Both among my favorites). The _only_ way you can talk Mordin out of his sacrifice is if he has no faith that Krogan leadership won't repeat their past mistakes. This means both Wrex and Eve must be dead. Wrex can easily get shot back in ME1, and not saving Maelin's research in ME2 ensures Eve's demise. In this case, Mordin will join the team working on the Crucible, adding to preparedness score.

*starts video knowing well enough whats gonna happen* ... i can do this, I CAN DO THIS! .... *mording commenting on the seashells* I CANT, I CAAAAANT *sobs*
It's possible to save Mordin, but the cost is too high. The Renegade version of the conversation with Bakara and Wrex is one of my favorites. Bakara: It's just a pity Mordin had to die. Shepard: He said it had to be him. Someone else might have gotten it wrong. Bakara: He got it right. For everyone. Wrex: Yeah...
DLC missions in this game are actually integral parts of the plot as you noticed with Javik (except for one, but it's so goofy and great), so hope you'll do them too. Bioware and EA got some angry backlash for cutting the game and selling it basically in parts back then. F for Mordin too, still gets me after so many years.
Probably the best mission in the game. Possibly in the entire trilogy! The only (very, very small) problem with playing this mission while Wrex is alive, is that there is no real dilemma. Of course everyone will choose to cure the genophage! Try playing it without Wrex (i.e. in a playthrough where he died on Virmire) and you'll find it far less clear-cut. The conflict between the moral choice and the pragmatic choice is very real, and you feel the full weight of it!
An interesting fact about Wreav - if Wrex dies in ME1, Wreav takes Wrex's place as Urdnot clan leader throughout the rest of the trilogy, and if you cure the genophage with Wreav as the leader he institutes a new Krogan Rebellion.
The big misjudgment about the Krogan that has been practiced by all their critics is that, due to the special circumstances, the women on Tuchanka never had the opportunity to shape the intergalactic politics of their people. These policies were only pursued by selfish, trigger-happy men and led to the results we know today. A bombed-out home planet and a galaxy-wide reputation that can hardly get any worse. Apparently no one thought for a moment that bringing women back into their social role would create completely different conditions. Not isolated and reduced solely to giving birth to offspring, but an active member of society. Eve opened my eyes to this from the very first moment.
"Fun Fact": If you ever questioned whether or not Bioware likes to hurt us Mordin doesn't hum/sing Scientist Salarian if you don't have that conversation in ME2.
that paragraph where dalatrash says that they're own scientist sacrificed his life.. i actually lost my sh**... you dare even mentioning him, then i took a mental lap cause its just a game and i got emotionally invested again....
Can't bring myself to cure the genophage if Wrex is dead. - given that Wreav explicitly plans to conquer what's left of the galaxy post-Reapers, it's suicidal insanity.
Ive tried to save Mordin, but the cost is too high. However sad, it seems the best path was to honor his choice of sacrifice. And with his sacrifice and that of the Primarchs son, it acts as a balm to the resentment from how they were wronged. A hand extended that that says to the krogan people "When it really matters, we are in this together". With Wrex to reign in the clans, and Bakara to reign in Wrex, it give promise to heal the divide amongst their people. The last part, is that the Krogan have so spread and integrated across galactic society that a repeat of the Krogan rebellions would probably not get off the ground for the disunitity such a path would cause. Mordin probably knew all of this, hense his conviction. He was the very Model of a Scientist Salarian. o7 Godspeed Mordin
Batarian space was likely closest to the Reapers' entry point from Dark Space, even after the destruction of the Alpha Relay. They were mostly wiped out in the opening days of the invasion. You can hear some of the random Batarians talking about it on the Citadel. You've been killing batarians all game long and calling them nasty. :)
9:40 I think you are misjudging Victus. He promised you help once the krogan landed on Palącej and started helping with the war effort there, but they haven't yet, have they?
Right Victus isn't going back on his promise. The deal was Shepard secures Krogan forces for Palavan then Victus would provide support to fight the Reapers and build the Crucible. This request for aid on Tuchanka is in addition to what he already promised
1:29:47 Actually, protecting the weak would be the exact sort of thing an anarchist would do. So Shepard is wrong. But what else would you expect from a soldier?
54:24 How did you get that Mordin help to create genophage? Salarians live on average 40 years and he's not at his end yet and the genophage has been around for 1400 years plus. That's 35 salarian lives ago that it was planted. He may be redeeming salarians in general here, but himself needs no "redemption arc". He may be the only truly ethical of recurring characters in the games.
Mordin created the modified version to keep the genophage going since the krogan were adapting to the old version, as Mordin confessed to Shep in ME2. So that really was his redemption arc.
@@KittyBoom360 please, remember he also said he had no remorse of that as both the creation and the correction were necessary. And I assume he knows a lot more on the matter than I do (as a gamer and as Shepard) and I trust his judgement here. So, no - no redemption needed. 😉
@@artursandwich1974 That was then, but at the end i believe Mordin said he made a mistake. His actions could be seen as simply carrying out a solution but that is a very limited way to look at it. 😉
@@Dragonryder-iv6vi @artursandwich1974 I think it depends on how you play, actually. Like, Mordin will only outright confess that he was wrong and had made a mistake if you play a mix of Renegade and Paragon and push him to admit it, which is how I play. Mordin then becomes very dramatic in his confession of having been wrong. Also, I think he only says that if Wrex and Eve are alive. So if you play full Renegade, I think Mordin won't even sacrifice himself, right? But here, in her playthrough, admittedly, his arc is ambiguous. If you play full Paragon, his actions and words could be interpreted either way, I suppose. Did he change his mind or did just the circumstances change? Again, in my playthrough, it's clear he changed his mind, but in hers, I'm unsure now because he might just be recognizing that the situation is now different.
1:15:24 To be fair: 1. The dalatrass probably knew Mordin longer and possibly better than Shepard did. 2. She does NOT mention his name in her message. 😉 3. Shepard would have to be partially to blame if the krogan waged a war on salarians, having "multiplied out of control". 4. In no way does she use his death to "justify her disgusting racism". How did you get there?
Are you okay? Do you wanna talk about it? All of your comments are just attacking her. So I'm a little concerned. She has her own struggles too, as do I, We can be here for each other instead of in conflict.
@@KittyBoom360 I'm "attacking" noone. I'm trying to defend facts. I think Lucyus is a great person with a whale of a heart and her character is my main reason for subscribing. And because I appreciate her kindness is why wouldn't like her emotions to overshadow the in-game truths. I definitely do not want my comments to come off as personal attacks - maybe it's my poor command of English that brings this result. I just don't want this fragile kind gamer to appear unjust. Thank you for your concern with my well-being and bring the problem in my comments to my attention. I vow to do better.
@@artursandwich1974 I have to admit i was really put off by most of your comments as well, but your explanation helped to generally explain where you were coming from. I think the main issue that many people have (in any language to be honest) is the incorrect use of the words, facts and truths interchangeably. Facts should be measurable, calculable, and almost indisputable. Truths on the other hand are our observations and interpretations of those facts. This is where problems arise. Take for example your first point, that the Dalatrass probably knew Mordin better than Shepard. This is likely nothing but unsubstantiated supposition. So not a truth and certainly not a fact. Your second point may be a simple misunderstanding of the expression. The Dalatrass didn't specifically use Mordin's name (probably for deniability to cover her ass) but she may as well have as everyone knew exactly to whom she was referring. The fact she did not use his name was even more insulting because she was basically striking him from the record. Which leads into your fourth point, where if you read the text carefully, the Dalatrass is blaming Shepard 'for ordering the Salarian scientist to die committing this act'. Could this be her wanting to absolve, 'any true Salarian' from acting this way. In her opinion no true Salarian would knowingly free the cattle/Krogan from the yolk placed on them by the wise, benevolent Salarians. So, it must have been some stupid or evil/incompetent human's fault. From some interpretations there could definitely be a few arguments for several kinds of racism/specism. A lot of this is open to interpretation. 😉
@@artursandwich1974 Ditto everything @Dragonryder-iv6vi just said. And in one of your other comments when you tried to correct her about Mordin not originally creating the genophage, you didn't give her the benefit of the doubt that she meant he created the recent modified version. So these "truths" of yours feel like trolling, as if you're looking for things to criticize, even though she never asked for criticism. None of your three comments felt like positive feedback. So that made me think you were looking for an argument, and when I'm behaving that way, it means something is bothering me, personally.
Hey where's Mordin? Uh ...he's over there, over there, and up there! I never spare the krogan, alternatively it keeps mordin alive too. Better character than wrex ever was lol

Everybody cries at this part. It's inevitable!
Mordin was a fantastic character
He was awesome 🧡
DLC missions in this game are actually integral parts of the plot as you noticed with Javik (except for one, but it's so goofy and great), so hope you'll do them too. Bioware and EA got some angry backlash for cutting the game and selling it basically in parts back then. F for Mordin too, still gets me after so many years.
I will do them, i've just been advised to save them for later ☺️
Press F to pay respect.
Eve is revolutionary in many ways 💜
"Fun Fact": If you ever questioned whether or not Bioware likes to hurt us Mordin doesn't hum/sing Scientist Salarian if you don't have that conversation in ME2.
that paragraph where dalatrash says that they're own scientist sacrificed his life.. i actually lost my sh**... you dare even mentioning him, then i took a mental lap cause its just a game and i got emotionally invested again....
lol right I was like DO NOT EVEN
@@LucyusMaximus i love the content you make, keep up the awesome work... and have a happy new year and Keelah Se'lai my friend
My favorite mission but one of the saddest to be sure. The writing on this one is best examples for all devs. Of course easier said than done, right?
Suuuper sad ☹️🐚
4 real, RIP to our smart friend!@@LucyusMaximus
"Don't cry, it's just a game"
The game:
😭
❤ Mordin!
Someone else might have gotten it wrong.
It had to be him. 💔
It's not unique to Batarians. I've done that to every group, mostly because they're trying to kill me. 🤷♀️
It's fun!🐚🐚🐚🐚🐚🐚
Fun fact, Mordin can be saved....and without mods
9:40 I think you are misjudging Victus. He promised you help once the krogan landed on Palącej and started helping with the war effort there, but they haven't yet, have they?
Right Victus isn't going back on his promise. The deal was Shepard secures Krogan forces for Palavan then Victus would provide support to fight the Reapers and build the Crucible. This request for aid on Tuchanka is in addition to what he already promised
@@melanieszelong4664 One might even say, it's Shepard who unilaterally alters the deal
Mordin 🥺
My heeeart
1:13:03 There is, but you would have had to kill more people
Yay!
😰🫠
@@LucyusMaximus was celebrating that I was one of the first to watch this, not Mordin missing out on running tests on seashells.
Mordin was my best friend. The worse Ive done in this entire series is lying to him.
💔
EDI comments later that it is SUPER unlikely that a single biological organism could destroy a reaper
If you had let Wrex die in ME1, his brother is krogan leader instead. Yes, it all goes as terribly as you might imagine lol
Oh I can imagine it's quite a rough time with him in charge 😒
2:50 "I just want to interrupt the conversation" - that is very nice of you but are you going to do anything about the issue discussed? Let's see...
1:15:24 To be fair:
1. The dalatrass probably knew Mordin longer and possibly better than Shepard did.
2. She does NOT mention his name in her message. 😉

No it doesn't. There's only one way to keep Mordin alive, and you have to purposely be kneecapping yourself to get it.
We all have our delusions
Then you don't really care about who Mordin is. He would prefer to die to spare the krogan from genocide.
