Sewing a 5/8 cape of no particular era to add to my late Victorian/early Edwardian wardrobe.

- Hello there,
I had a very short length of fabric. I don't know what made me buy it. I had no better idea than to sew a simple cape. It may be a bit too simple, but as it was intended to be an indoor cape worn in home office, it doesn't need to be fancy. Occasionally I might wear it outdoors over my late Victorian / early Edwardian garments.
oh my goodness. it wasn’t until this tutorial i realized you can do multiple hand stitches at once! i cant believe i’ve been using so much energy to wave my arm around all this time 😭
Just think of all the energy you can save from now on! 😀

Freezing all the time😂 oh how true that is! I also hand sew garments so these videos are a joy to watch. Your tiny stitches are so beautiful!! Definitely a labor of love. I’ve recently gotten more into basting so I can remove pins too. It’s soooo much better!!! Now I only have to worry about my sewing needle stabbing me, which it does often enough😬 Does that happen to you? I especially don’t like when it goes under my nail😣
I'm glad you like my videos. It's nice to know another hand stitching enthusiast. I do stab myself, but that's nothing compared to the deep cuts pins can make. I'm terribly clumsy with pins. They get everywhere, even in my bed or the bathroom. I don't sit down without checking the chair first. How I dislike them!
I use 11 sharps for sewing, I've found both ends are really sharp. The worst is that I constantly lose my needles and I usually find them when I step into them and I have to remove them from my heel. Now, that hurts!
I think the best thing about making my own clothes is the stitching itself. Wearable garments are only a side product of stitching.
@@APenchantforSewing I fee the same way about the stitching! It’s meditative for me and very enjoyable. I’m currently finishing up a newborn baby outfit. It’s a little footie pajama outfit. Practical? No! But I like to think my sister in law will think of it as a keepsake to always remember her little one.
How cute that outfit must be! I'm sure the baby when it grows up will cherish it too. And maybe one day you'll have a little apprentice.
When I am in a hurry then I am more likely to stab myself with the needle. Taking my time it doesn't happen

That shouldn't hinder you. I had to learn to sew too. It's a skill that is never too late to learn. There are plenty of tutorials for beginners on yt if you can't ask anyone to teach you.

WOW Hand-sewing - how refreshing. IF ONLY. I cannot sew a straight line AND spacing each stitch the same is challenging, if not IMPOSSIBLE for me... any tips for either? I am familiar with the stitches you used in this video - and i have "used" them in repairs, etc. but never for a full-on garment or anything. interesting to think about trying.
Hello there, I'm awfully sorry for the late reply. I cannot sew in a straight line either, that's why I always draw a guiding line. There's nothing shameful about it. As for spacing the stitches, I'm not perfect either and I don't think you should bother too much. There's so much charm in hand stitches! I don't like the lifeless even look of machine stitches. Maybe you could mark the length of the stitches beforehand but that sounds like too much work. My best advice is: don't be afraid to fully hand sew a garment because you won't get enough practice by doing repairs. You need to sew long seams. It's a bit like learning to ride a bike: at first you won't find your balance unless you have space to go forward. Try to sew a simple skirt or what's best to start with, an apron (or pillowcase) first. Even if you're not entirely satisfied with your stitches, you'll get a functional end product.

It was a remnant, might have been around a metre but it was very distorted so I had a difficult job. Make sure you have a pattern first, then buy the necessary amount of fabric.

I don't remember. If I don't say in the video I have no idea, but probably 1m by 1.4m or 1.5m because I had the whole width.
