I wish I could acquire her Buddhist type way of "sitting" HER PATIENCE AND DILIGENCE. My late gran and her mother did hand sewing like Bernadette's precise as a sewing machine and when I watched my gran it gave me so much delight and calmed me, I was hyper and my home life was hell, only child with 2 of the most destructive people, should never have been parents...sorry for spoiling the mood. I have always loved vintage and costume dressing and coming here or to Cathy Hay and Morgan Donner And Rachel Maksy, her friends helps me with depression etc and there is always something interesting at times hilarious etc. Namaste Z

I'm fully hearing but I am so grateful for the attention to details in the captions, because my brain lags like a 2009 dell laptop and I often have to have a glance at the captions to catch a little snippet of what's going on in the audio. I used to try to give back to the community and caption videos in my (admittedly very small amounts of) free time, but youtube took out the community captions option, which was really awful of them to do. Dear Bernadette, I've noticed lately that with the black garments and summer sun you've been having difficulty with exposure resulting in a lot of backlighting... have you tried using a photography reflector/big white foamboard to bounce the window light and fill in the front? Alternatively getting some semisheer fabric to put in front of the windows to diffuse and soften the window daylight might help.

Part of the enjoyment of watching "Murdoch Mysteries" for so many years, and also the "Frankie Drake Mysteries", has been the excellent recreations of the Costumes of the period. I have donated several pieces of actual 1890's -- 1903 clothing to the Royal Ontario Museum, and can attest to the fine workmanship, of the clothing from this special era. 🍁

Shoes with those beautifully shaped heels had another day in the sun. In the mid 1950's, Capezio came out with ladies dress shoes with them. I loved 'em! Comfortable, stylish, and something besides the very high heeled pumps so popular back then.
My grandmother would have loved American Duchess shoes! Shoes in the later part of the 19th Century were not made for left and right feet. Both shoes were the same and your feet either adapted or else. Her feet showed the "adapting" for the rest of her life.

I've ordered a pair of the Bernadette shoe in the black and cognac and I can't stinkin' wait to wear them! I'm so happy that I've found your channel and other historical/vintage fashion TH-camrs. For some reason it never occurred to me that there would be vintage and antique fashion sewing channels on such a modern site and that I was just a weirdo for wanting to sew all of these clothes. Now that you and other TH-camrs have reawakened my sewing spirit, I have started a sewing journey to make my entire closet vintage and historical fashion based. This passed summer I made 2 dresses and a blouse from the 1950s, I would have gotten many more pieces done this summer during quarantine but I am a teacher and was LITERALLY NEVER left alone the entire summer by my superiors demanding I do hundreds of zoom meetings and professional developments in case my job changed this year (it did not and never would have, my school board is literally stupid) just to find that nothing they claimed they set up for this school year to all fail miserably in the first few weeks back. I plan to start learning how to draft since I'm fairly mathematically inclined and should have at least a good go of it. Thanks for all of the cool stuff you do.

I really took your video about fast fashion to heart. This month I made my first skirt by hand! (Trying to start simple cuz I don't have a sewing machine yet.) I also purchased my first pair of shoes from American Dutchess. Someday (after a lot more practice) I will make this cape to go with them. In the mean time I have a plan to turn something I already own from "kinda cape like" to full on cape. I'm very excited!

  • @SuperAngryShark

I just preordered them! I'm so excited to have a good, long lasting shoe I can use in my "teacher outfits"! I graduate in May so this was definitely a fun little early graduation present for me. Your video on fast fashion really spoke to me, so I've been trying to be smarter about where/when I make clothing purchases. So on top of being a stylish and professional addition to my job wardrobe the shoe will also double as my first real investment into sustainable fashion!

That cloak! I pinned it to my pinterest board a long while ago, and have recently been wondering how I can make it. I have even purchased a quantity of brown wool, and a pale mink silk, with intentions of making said cloak, but without any clue how to begin. Now, here you come to save my day, with not only a link, but a full video to help me on my way. Thank you so much, dear Bernadette, for continuing to inspire us all

I get a kick out of how much you consider hand sewing to be an indulgent luxury! 😆 I lived off grid for about ten years in a mud & straw house which I built with my own two hands, and made garments by hand (even bridesmaid clothes for my two daughters). I like sewing by hand, and agree that it feels like you have more control over the result than with machine stitching. I enjoy your videos, and always stay till the end. I watch them while I knit and crochet sweaters for my new winter wardrobe--my most recent endeavors-- and appreciate your company. You are a very pleasant companion.
