  • Red Bull’s set an ominous benchmark while McLaren demonstrated how to get it badly wrong - so now Aston Martin’s Honda partnership is a done deal for 2026, what does it need to do to be able to win?
Just as we predicted recently, Aston Martin and Honda have struck a deal to join forces for F1’s next set of engine rules.
But getting the car, engine and drivers in place to make this a legitimate championship challenger is going to take up all the available time between now and 2026.
So here are six key factors that will determine whether they can succeed.
    00:00 Intro
    00:31 Avoid a culture clash
02:07 Maximise the works team potential
    03:49 Replace the Mercedes support
05:11 Set up the engine situation correctly
    07:13 Another crucial partner
    08:29 Get proper drivers

Well, before... it was pretty much an Aston Martin sticker on the car for $. Strulović bought AM but its really still Force India (which was really Spyker / Midland / Jordan) as all the infrastructure they still have is from that era. Once they get their own facilities, and revamp infrastructure, I think is when you can truly call it "Aston Martin". The same way Red Bull's early years were just kinda "Jaguar but with a twist".

All I have to say is Lawrence is a really smart and insightful dude. It almost seems like everything is falling in place for Aston Martin. First dude buys Force India and controlling share in Aston Martin Lagonda, cleverly rebrands F1 team to AMR which gives a huge boost to Aston Martin Lagonda. Identifies weaknesses in the team and takes action to tackle those - infrastructure, personnel, world champion drivers, highly experiences team bosses. Gets Aramco on board which is filthy rich. Swoops up Honda and gets the team a works deal. If everything goes right this trinity of AM - Honda - Aramco will be huge in 2026, we are talking dominance.

Look at Lance pre f1 career it is quite good actually. Give him the experience to go for a year or 5-6 and he should get the experience to be more clear to his engineers to set up his car. Don't forget that Max for example has been driving f1 since he was 17 and now is 25. That's 8 years and only last year was his first year you could argue he was better then the rest. You can thank the manufacturers for dropping the ball so hard. RB have done a brilliant job but the gap is this big because everyone else did such a shit job.
Mercedes are stuck in the dark with what to do with these new regs, their entire engineering philosophy was crippled by the budget cap and it will take many years to properly adapt. Ferrari are the definition of one step forward two steps back. They have this weird ability to be good enough to remain towards the top, but have completely lost the ability to actually make those final steps that take you to the very top. Alpine is an even more comically depressing manufacturer that makes Ferrari look like they've got their shit together.
Everyone else is a customer and despite AM's leap, it's clear that even with frozen engines and budget caps the customers can't compete with manufacturers unless they get it horribly wrong, like Mercedes has done. The reality is, the budget cap has exposed who's got the best engineering talent hired and the track action shows. Whether the competition can get its shit together for next year and RB starts hitting some diminishing returns remains to be seen, so right now all we really can talk about is the future because the present has been well decieded barring the odd race with some anomalous outcome.

Aston uses as many Mercedes parts as they can, this includes the engine but also things like suspension elemets, so will they still be supplied for these parts by Mercedes or make their own parts? When they were racing point, they tried to copy the Mercedes design but still used a high rake concept that didn't work, when they made it low rake similar to the Mercedes car they gained pace. So they need a whole package, the parts they buy from Mercedes are adapted to work specifically with the Mercedes engine and would likely need to be adapted to be optimal for the Honda engine.

As a former McLaren fan: the simple fact was that McLaren wasn't able to function on the level they needed to make the partnership work. They were undersupplied, arrogant, had no idea of what the state of their infrastructure was. Infrastructure in terms of people (didn't know they didn't have the right designers), production means (didn't know they needed their own windtunnel and other means) and management (didn't know they needed to manage the Honda-relationship and give them what they needed instead of trying to run the program, forcing Honda to make choices by forcing the size-zero concept and not give them extra cooling when they asked for it) and finance (Honda apart from free engines and support also paid McLaren 100 million in sponsorship money and also half of the salaris of the drivers, while they only got a small logo on the car).
They then got it on the nose once they made that car for the Renault engines. A year later it went better but only because of Pat Fry whom they basically got in per accident. And they had the luck that they could use that car for three years. Once they had to do it based on the people the choose themselves since last year, they failed again.

i predict 3 to 5 bad years, Honda pulling out and than Aston Martin wins a championship. After this Honda realises it wants to stay and after 2 years they partner with the old williams team (which by the year 203x will have a new name and identity).
