Who would've thought 5 years ago, that the Cup Series would be racing in the rain, and on a street course. We've entered a new era for the sport, and this was an epic race!
For real! Hope they keep stuff like this up, I loved it!
Yes awesome
Best NASCAR race is one that contains actual racing, who'd've thought it.
Best race I have seen ever! Please NASCAR do more street racing. So cool!!!!
This was my first live NASCAR race. I've been to countless chicago sporting events, but this honestly ranks in the top 2 or 3 all-time.
The ending was epic. SVG coming from the mid-back to the front was unbelievable. Never heard of him before, but won’t ever forget him now.
Like King Kong taking on a pack of raptors... just merciless when he turned it on
Dude was in 10th place with 18 to go... that's crazy for a one lane street course that nobody had practiced much on? Absolutely nuts... like Bill Elliot back at Talledega in 1985
Did a few races with Shane (and Scott) on iRacing in the indy cars, some years back, he is an Alien, can confirm. Him and Scott, and a few others in the group. only time I won against them was luck or fuel strategy. Good old sock racing days, Good on ya Shane van Gessen burger ;) (LOL at Comentators mispronunciation 1:25 )
@@brycering5989 Yeah, classic commentary screw up. I didn't think there were any Big Mac's in the spelling of his name!
He is a great racer from down under, wr have a few street races a year down here, Adelaide, Gold Coast, Auckland, that sort of racing is his style, see what happens on an oval track.
As a Chicagoan and race fan who has typically avoided NASCAR, I'm really impressed with how this event went. I'm hopeful you'll be back next year, and if so, I have 2 suggestions.
1) Don't do 4th of July weekend. City is already crowded and a lot of Chicagoans aren't ready to give up their annual family bbq's to go to this.
2) Make 1 day tickets available. $270 for the weekend might work for regular NASCAR fans, but it's a bit pricey for new and/or casual fans who just want to just check it out.
This race peaked a lot of interest. I think next edition would be a sell out event. This was properly epic to watch.
Their first event didn’t sell out because people were very hesitant. The tickets were way too expensive for new comers who just wanted to see what nascar is about which is most people that live here. We are a very blue and nobody here is really into nascar. However it would’ve been a good idea if tickets were maybe $160 per person. Plus parking is a nightmare during events.
What a liar , these track overtaken public space and never about locals talent
I went to one cup race back in 2016 at Sonoma and got to see my favorite race car driver of all time win, Tony “Smoke” Stewart!! Best day of my life! ! My dad and I went out to Sonoma for my 21st birthday and we had a blast!! Best night of my life!! 😂😂❤
As an Aussie who has visited Chicago, it's cool to watch NASCAR down the very streets we walked not too long ago. Unbelievable to see SVG win on debut.

For a country of so few people, NZ can produce such remarkable talents. SVG, Scott McLaughlin, Scott Dixon and Brendon Hartley are all tearing it up on the world stage. As an Australian, I can only be embarassed!
Liam Lawson will be on that list too 😊👍
Very kind words mate. Good on ya!
Don't forget Earl Bamber, Mitch Evans, Liam Lawson, Nick Cassidy, and many more.
NZ has a few very good riders at road racing, notably Bruce Anstey in the Isle of Man TT plus several others.
Yeah but you Aussies wrestle crocodiles
Embarrassed, really, he's a great driver no doubt, but hasn't come close to beating Peter Brock's achievements yet. He will though I'm sure. He has the best feel for the limit of a car's ability I've ever seen, and not shy of putting in a position to pass. Have a bit of pride in the country you call home. Can't wait to see Kyle Busch vs the Giss
I’m a massive NASCAR fan from the UK and have to say that this is probably the best race I’ve seen in a very long time. I’m not a fan of street courses but wow! This has converted me. I’ve been to over 20 cup races over the past 15 years but I’ve never sat on the edge of my seat for the entire race. I did for this. Larson is my driver since Jr retired but was a Gisbergen fan for this race. Love watching him in the V8 Super Cars. What a talent. He owned it. Well done sir, well done. 🎉
love to see fans from across the Atlantic! ✌
@@Dud3itsj3ffdefinitely a nice sight to see.
Yeah, brit here too, it's so hard to find other brits who also love nascar, cos a lot of people here are F1 snobs and refuse to watch any motorsports series that isn't F1. They don't know what they're missing. But with more street races like these, and the amount of road courses they have on the calendar also, and tons of drivers from series like F1 and Australian super cars coming over to race in nascar, it seems like there's a bright future ahead where more non-American fans can start watching nascar than ever before. Fingers crossed. I'm always hoping they'll one day do a race in Europe at some point, but that's probably unlikely at the moment. But it ain't cheap to fly over to the US to watch a race, so yeah.
Absolute legend SVG 💪💪💪

You guys need to watch some Supercar action, that's par for the course mate.
Nascar does have road courses, street courses will be tough to fit into the schedule. What tracks do we drop to add more road courses?
SVG on that street circuit in an Aussie V8 supercar, would of lapped those nascars easily
@thegreatresist5523I was there at turn 1 and NO two wide starts was AWESOME with that track being so narrow!
NASCAR needs more of this!! Gives it a new racing image they desperately need!
SVGs cornering was incredible to watch. Such precision and confidence on turn in, seemed like he was in a league of his own that day.
He always is, he drives the car to the physical limit and it’s amazing to see
Chicago will be a failure they say, Nascar will never work on streets they say, yeah right. That was one of the best races of the season. So everyone who had zero enthusiasm can finally have their traps shut. SVG for the win boys!!!

I’ve been watching F1 and V8 Supercars for years, and was shocked to have NASCAR on a wet street circuit show up in my feed, doubly so to hear SVG was racing. If NASCAR keeps this variety of racing up, they’ll have a new fan.

You need to see him in supercars. It's like he is driving in a different category some days. He has insane over taking skill and an incredibly high racing IQ. His best achievement that helps him win a lot is how he manages tyres. He always does it so much better then those around him

When Danny Ric finally races in nascar, it should help with that a lot, I bet a lot of aussies will start watching it then. And ifs inevitable he races over there eventually, because he got into motorsports in the first place because of nascar, and Dale Earnhardt is his idol, which is why he uses the number 3. So once he's finally done with F1, I'm excited to see what he can do in a stock car.

The Toyotas did a great job of taking the fastest cars and throwing them into the barriers.
They missed the fastest car though. SVG fastest lap was almost a full second quicker than the next fastest driver! He was in a different league to the rest of the field.
Even if the Toyotas didn't throw it away, that trackhouse car was on rails, weren't going to best SVG, he's too strong

SVG has always been kick arse. For those who don't know of his talent, search him up, you'll be very impressed with his calibre of driving.
From the highlights, he has no fear diving into corners. Ate up the gap, made passes, then gapped the rest. Very good driver
From rally to Supercars he is the real deal.
There are a lot of highlights to watch. Even though II am Canadian, I have loved V8 Supercars for years & have been following SVG’s career since the SP Tools/Stone Brothers Racing Ford Falcon days.

Kinda wish the Supercars & NASCAR platforms were this similar when Ambrose came over. He would have had even more success during his time is NASCAR.
@@trealosgaming3345 To think that this week was his first time Shane planted his bum in a Nascar too...
There are plenty of great road course racers in the US and today proved that international drivers with an ounce of talent, have a good shot at doing well on the NASCSAR road courses. 😉
@@FBTRCanada Here in Australia we all wished the platforms were similar ! I would like to see the same thing happen here in Oz, bring over a seasoned NASCAR racer and drop him into a Supercar. Last time we had an American and a Canadian in our cars was at Bathurst back in 2019 (Alexander Rossi/James Hinchcliffe)... We have also had the likes of Tommy Kendall and also Max Wilson drive.
I think the best thing about this race was the commentators wrestling with Shanes name at the start and eventually getting the message to call him SVG, and then graduating to saying the whole thing right because they were saying it so much lol. the commentary speaks for itself. well done shane, you put a stick in the sand today and it just so happened to be on the top step of a nascar podium, what an incredible thing to do. Hope we see you back again.
Not huge into nascar but as soon as I heard there was a city street race I was sold on the idea. Fantastic watch!
Despite the wet weather, the late start and 1/4 of the laps cut away, this was definitely ENTERTAINING as hell! Consider giving Sebring road course a date, NASCAR…
The wet weather is what made the entertainment. Driving a car at its limit in the wet is much harder than on dry pavement. Steering, braking, acceleration are all very tweaky and recovering from a mistake is very hard when the car is at its limit in the wet. Its fun and easier on the drivetrain tho.
@@surrrithuxand it was neat to see the race change as the course dried up, made for interesting pit strategy with the decision of when to switch to slicks

If he started driving full time then he'd be a championship contender once he was used to the ovals
He will take ovals in his stride, not a problem for him,put him in anything with wheels and he's a winner
He's looking to race full time in nascar next year (2024) apparently. So he'll have to get used to ovals very quickly. But he's more than talented enough to do that, and he has a great chance of getting multiple wins next season because of all the road courses nascar has these days. And yeah hopefully they continue to do more street races too. This Chicago one has been a huge success after all, it was unanimously enjoyed by nascar fans and non nascar fans alike, it'll attract more motorsports fans into getting into nascar. As long as they have an open mind, and realise how fun and insane ovals can be (as a brit, it's very hard to convince any of my friends to watch the oval races, unless they're the daytona 500 or the Indy 500. So cool to see this in Chicago, another history that was made, love it! NASCAR just got cooler!!
they need to do this in nyc. times square would be so cool
Phenomenal race at Chicago. Now everyone can see when the playing field is truly equal. 1rst time track. No notes . No advantage. 1rst time drivers in Cup. FIRST TIME WINNER. Congrats to all.
Just put 1st lol. No need for the r
I'm a kiwi and its abit of a joke to say no advantage. SVG has been winning street courses in heavier, worse handling cars for years now.
It's great to see him win his first race in a new format, but it's not too surprising, he was competitive in his first Rally and drifting events without years of experience.
Best race I've seen in years!
NASCAR finding out what other races series know for a century. So good to see. Will get many new fans from this!
I just knew that a Chicago street race would be an epic failure!! I was wrong!
Bell, Truex, and Reddick were amazing, but who knew that Gisbergen would make everyone on that insane coarse look less than elite? I was definitely wrong, Nascar put on a great show today!
I was the same way. Thought was going to be a shit show
I was convinced this race was going to be an absolute failure.
I humbly eat my words
It was a really good showing considering the adversary and when combined with the atmosphere of the city made it so cool! In person at turn 1 I could hear the cars echo off the skyscrapers at turns 7 through 10.
I’ve gone faster thru those same streets 100% sure I would’ve won that race had I participated
@@danielguerrero3853 Racing isnt just about speed. but hey I'm sure you know that. so get to cup series and show us. If you're so fast that I'm sure it won't be a problem.
I'm not a Nascar fan, but this was awesome racing on a very good street course layout. Props to the series for pulling this off.
When they showed off the layout I thought It looked a bit simple - but it works. Long straights and tight bends, a little skinny in places - but for the cars in particular it works well - trying to pull up big brutes of machines. The rain made it super greasy too and sorted out the chaff from the wheat in terms of driver quality.
Didn't realize that was the first street race for NASCAR and hope its not the last. I mean they've had some zany ideas.... Dirt at Bristol (not the worst idea the track can do it), LA Coliseum short track - that was a bit undercooked... but this one deserves some attention.
And the Garage 59 machine at Le Mans - NASCAR hitting a few home runs the last few weeks.
@@Kurz_Weber Seemed to me, just from the highlights, that there was racing room through most of the corners. I can think of some Indycar and F1 street races that present less opportunity. Glad you enjoyed as well
I live in the suburbs of Chicago and I'm happy that this was taking place for all the people involved I hope it was a success and they do it next year it's just nice to see racing locally. ❤😎
I'm not into NASCAR, but this has sparked my curiosity and I should have gone hopefully they bring it back
Nascar + street + rain = perfect! NASCAR RUMBLE!!!
I've been a Gissy fan for years and this bloke is one of the greatest drivers in any motorsport he puts his hand to!!! What a Legend!!!! WELL DONE GISSY!!! You've made us all proud mate 😃😃😃😃👍👍👍👍👍
👌🏻
NASCAR needs to do more street races like this. This is easily the most fun I've had watching in a long long time.
I thought this is GRID Legend😄never thought Nascar would have street course, hope they'll do more stuff like this
Wow this is something we haven’t seen since 1963!! A racer winning in their debut!!
I really hate that the weather didn’t cooperate. This was such a great event for Chicago. Truly wish that there would have been nothing but that usual beautiful Chicago summer sunshine and they really could have taken in the full beauty of the south loop with that gorgeous Chicago skyline in the backdrop on Lake Shore Dr.
Nah, weather conditions gives spice to the racing. Driver's skills to control the car in wet conditions or get their position dropped.
@@objective7042Meh. For a street course? Give me dry conditions any day. You would have probably seen even better racing if it wasn't wet because guys would be jamming it harder in the turns and more passing on the straight. Not only that, Chicago looks beautiful in the summer when it's sunny. I hope Nascar continues to come back to Chicago because it was amazing.
And that's what makes this type of racing great, the unpredictability rain brings to the race. the change from dry to wets, pit strategies and who handles the conditions better. Ya really have to drive to the conditions.
I watched the whole Race on SVG on board cameras front & rear he was rolling the car into the corners, light on the brakes and changing down gears.
Which is why all the other drivers would momentarily gain on him into the corners carrying more speed but harder on the brakes causing some to lock up, slide and into the tires or into the drivers ahead. If they survived that they came out of the corner slower and losing traction, this is where SVG would gap it on them. Better traction out of the corners and gone.
The only time they gained on him was under the caution flag.
His lap times proved he was faster than anyone else. think they were all given a lesson today.
Rain or Shine drive to the conditions, he would had driven differently in dry weather.
If you only known dry weather driving your skill set is only half as good as someone who drives both, remembering it was everyone's first time in Chicago, and SVG first time in a Nascar.
sorry for going on, but we're proud of him down under both sides, of the Tasman sea.
Are we gonna talk about how Kyle Busch went from outside top 30 to 5th position? And yes, SVG deserves a full time seat bcs his performance is unbelievable
He might run a few races, will be very surprised if he goes nascar full time
This is the first time I’ve ever looked up a nascar race
Seeing NASCAR race in the rain is Ace!
Currently one of the top 5 races this year
Yes the high level of speed competition in rainy track conditions is super impressive for me.
Can confirm this is the first time I'm sitting down watching nascar , other than crashes, even though this is mostly crashes, I mean this actually entertains me. I'll keep my eye out for the next one.
races like these are going to really throw nascar back into the spotlight. some amazing racing.
NASCAR needs to do this more often.❤
Thrilled to have broadcasted the 2023 Grant Park 220 at Chicago - NASCAR Cup Series. The race was absolutely epic! Stay tuned for more exhilarating races and exciting drone coverage. Thank you NASCAR and fans for the incredible support!
Races like this promote the series and will generate a bigger audience. Good to see.
Once I saw Van Gisbergen was running this weekend I knew he'd make a run at the win. If you don't watch the Australian Super V8 series you need to start, great racing and SVG is a BEAST
I’ll never understand why the Super Car series is not more popular here in the US.
@@tommloye4626 it’s just not marketed here. As well as a lot of American’s being relatively ignorant to road course racing until the last 5 years or so. I agree though, it should have the same growth as F1 has had, it’s some of the most exciting racing on the planet. Especially Bathurst, that race is electric every single time.
@@tommloye4626probably biggest reason being the time difference.
I need more NASCAR street courses! That was unreal!
I agree I hope NASCAR Add Las Vegas Street Circuit replace Las Vegas Oval Spring Race just like F1 Add Las Vegas Street Circuit
This exactly what NASCAR has to do
As F1 fan this was a fun watch
They need more of these kinds of races!! I remember in the early 90s they had the “Grand Prix Du Mardi Gras “ in the streets of New Orleans and I was there every second of it !
Hell I’d travel to go watch city circuits like this!
SVG putting on a masterclass
@@user-kj7nw4zg1yyep. Good car but a better driver
SVG must have nitrous in his veins cuz the way he closes the gap to cars infront of him is unreal. V8S has some phenomenal talent in their stables.
SVG doing what SVG does best !
@@izzdin6228 there was 3 of them generational talents in V8SC in recent years: Whincup, McLaughlin and SVG. Whincup is now retired, Scotty is in IndyCar.
@@skandre7776Whincup not so much, Scottie beat him in a Volvo, Whincup just ALWAYS had the best gear.
Scottie and giz have translated their raw talent through other teams and series.
Finally a race that was not boring.
Indycar wasn't boring as well
Dude that race was one of the worst I have ever seen!! The drivers were missing corners half the time, the cars were going very slow, and it was raining!! Just not the ingredients for a good race!!! Chicagoland brought much better racing than thus track could ever
Australia and new Zealand have had street races for years so it is not surprising that such a strong racer here in OZ would do well in a street race over in US. Well done SVG. It will be interesting to see how he handles the ovals. He certainly has a very strong car.
This was absolutely amazing!!! Best NASCAR race I’ve seen in a long time !!! Please come back to Chicago
Awesome SVG! It isn't really a surprise he won, he's that good in everything he drives. Rare talent
SVG came into an iRacing session I was in a couple of years ago, completed 3 laps, set a time over a second quicker than the next fastest guy, then left. The rest of us had been there for 90 minutes trying to set fast laps. I feel like I know a little bit how these guys feel 🥲
yea he's an animal in whatever he drives, Real or virtual. I've raced him a few times in iRacing. an he's impossible to beat almost. Although I did beat him once on charlotte roval.... because someone wrecked him.... not me.
They any of them in the top 25 should be fired if they couldn't do that
Im not really a Nascar fan but if more racing was like that, I would watch.
The best race in the history 😉❤
I wasn't a NASCAR fan but that was pretty good racing. We need more street and road circuits to complement the track races. Good job!
They started running more road courses in the cup series in recent year. I have really enjoyed them. I didn't get to watch this one but from this video, i missed a good show.
NASCAR should get water trucks and wet all the road course tracks so every race is started on a wet track.
Best race of the year so far on the cup series
American Fans: How did SVG pull that off?!
Australian/Kiwi Fans: Ah, just another Sunday for Shane.
it was a " Hold my beer" kind of moment
Congratulations SVG! Having lived in Chicago and running my CTS down Lakeshore Drive and Michigan Avenue late at night, driving a NASCAR on these clear and open streets was a hopeful dream!!!😎
Nascar looking SWEET these days with the Le Mans car and now a roaring muscle car battle through city streets. This is very good to see, what a great race.
Honestly wasn’t expecting that good of a race on a street in the rain
