    The old "holding the lighter trick" think I used that a couple of times in my youth, love it!

    My son is a mechanical engineer and he watched this video with me and said that the heat gun is the correct way to go , just use a smaller tip or an adapter to concentrate the heat in to a smaller space. This will get you the results you want using LESS heat or the same heath but LESS TIME to shrink the tubbing.

    Excellent. Thank you. Fixed my PC120E Mini DV. A super solid fix.

    I've used heat shrink tubing for many things, most recently to repair/cover up the ends of Apple's Lightning cables (that usually start yellowing and eventually deteriorate exposing the internal conductors). They even have the white color at Home Depot. Cables with larger ends may require to tubing to be stretched internally to go over the connector but still be able to shrink down to the cable size. I stretch those out using custom ground needle-nose pliers, slip the HS tubing over the tips of the needle nose and apply pressure in the opposite way opening the tips rather than closing them.

    That camera produces a nice picture, but it's a beast and a half :-D
    I was thinking wire insulation, but that would be a bit lumpy inside.
    Unless it was braded coax, then steal the jacket.

    NICE Engineering! Great way to use heat shrink tubing to solve many problems.

    Neat little trick. Wonder if a piece of tight fitting spaghetti tubing would also work. Stuff some over the pin, then cut it to length.

      Anything that fits and doesn't slip would work.

    Common issue with the HDR-HC3 is the loading mechanism and the dam mode switch issue. Mine suffered the same. junker. Happy to send you mine if you think you can fix it?

    Q: Would this technique work on a Betamax VCR?

    Also would consider using a tiny bit of JB weld epoxy inside the tube to grip the metal

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh it grips the metal just fine

      There is a spring loaded lever that the tape holds up. when the tape ends the lever drops and turns the switch off. Lever is probably stuck.

    are minidv tapes still being made?

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That i don't know. Have not bought any since 2005. Have a few unopened sitting in a box.

    • @dlarge6502
      @dlarge6502 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hard to say. You can still buy Sony branded tape but that may be new old stock or not. Sony have not published anything about discontinuation of manufacture. My tapes are made in france for example so very likely just like with other types of tape a factory re-labeling the same tape under multiple brands.
      Anyway I buy mine new off Amazon.
      I can safely say the larger DV formats are still made.

    10:16 i hate this camera and the rest like it, i could not repair it when i changed the capacitors it got worse and it never worked

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I hate them too. That's why this one never got fixed. I have a guy calling me out because I refuse to accept his camera for repair. He can not understand why I won't take it. Has resulted to name calling. He can't understand why I won't take his money. My reply was I can not, in good faith take his money and replace capacitors in a 40 year old camera knowing it may only work for a few days or weeks before something breaks again. The few old cameras I have repaired as a demonstration were not sold. They go back in a box to be pulled out again in a few years to make another video on what failed next.

      @@12voltvids I the series of these cameras that I could not fix was the v800 Hi8
      Exactly these models have many disadvantages they have many capacitors to change also there is no free space to stick new throughe capacitors and also to change all the capacitors the camera will cause a lot of problems or will malfunction, good models for repair this VX1, VX3 V5000, V6000
