I've been looking for ways to do this process for cheap cuz there's a a lot of expensive capturing methods. I'm 100% doing this! Thank you so much for posting this tutorial!!!!
@@AudrieStorme I'm telling you, the day I have my own camera I will watch your video thousands of times like I have done now hahah :) Greeting from Argentina
In this turorial a mini DV camcorder is used. Since the mini DV is a digital cassette, using the a/v analogue output as shown worsens the overall capture quality. The best way to preserve it is by using the DV in/out shown at 2:56. That output is available on every old digital video cameras and it's also known as IEEE1394 or FireWire . Unfortunately only Mac and some PCs have a thunderbolt port ( not to be confused with USB) retro-compatible with the old FireWire/ IEEE1394 port. Some online stores offer fake usb / FireWire adapters but they don't work because usb and FireWire are different standards and never compatible.
Exactly what I was thinking. Firewire card for a PC is ~$20. If you have a DV recorder like the one used in this video, you can also use it as an input device to get digital files off an analog device like a Hi8....but I'll admit that I use an I-O Data capture device when importing analog video from my Hi8 on to my PC.
Yeah, I was just thinking this. By using the composite (Yellow cable with Red and White audio), you're converting a digital signal to analog and then back to digital again. Using the FireWire method yields the best quality, but it's cumbersome if you don't have the right PC/Mac with PCIe or Thunderbolt capabilities.
I have come to the same realization after using this specific capture card method after my Windows Vista computer died before I could convert all my tapes. When watched on a computer with this method, text in the footage is blurry and unreadable so this is simply not a good route to go for capturing memories on MiniDV. Now I'm left wondering if those video to microsd devices are good enough or should I invest in an old laptop with FireWire port 🤔
I have the same camcorder. I simply connect the Firewire out of the camcorder to the Firewire connection in my PC. The Firewire card in my PC cost me about $30.00. The software I use for capturing is called Virtual Dub, a free program that works with all versions of Windows. Using Firewire, you get an exact digital copy of what is on the mini-DV tape. Can't do better than that! 😊
Def trying this for my 2003 Panasonic camcorder. Trying to get a couple tapes onto my computer for my parents as a surprise while also trying to get into filming with it more often (its been sitting in a cardboard box inside a cam case since 2005).
Hey dude, maybe you can help me? I do everything like in the video and I have Sony Handycam DCR-TRV265E, but for some reason OBS program doesn't see the images from my camera🙂 I use macbook 2015, maybe I need to download some drivers?
@@leprxssy I don't know much on the troubleshooting of MacBook. can you make sure the dvr to usb converter is working or supported by Mac? I am sure the issue lies in that. dvr to usb converter sally don't require drivers. I bought 2 and 1 of them worked.
@@AkihikoJunichi well, as it was shown in this video, this cable works on Mac, but I guess I should try doing it on Windows, maybe that will fix the problem🥲 Thx ✨
i have a camcorder that had no way to export video unless i purchase its original docking station for £200 on ebay! Used the AV out cable that had those male red/white/yellow plug, bought the adapter as suggested, and it worked perfectly! One note i'd like to add is when starting to record on OBS, make sure the internal mic of your pc/mac is turned off.
You have a handy cam with “I Link” which is FireWire, you can get thunderbolt to FireWire adapter to connect the camera to the Mac. Seeing as it’s a Sony handy cam you can most likely also connect a vcr to the camera using its av connector then FireWire to the Mac to capture vhs if you want.
This was such a simple solution but worked!! I got all the apple thunderbolt adapters before and it gave me such a headache and didn't work... just one thing, I followed all the steps but the audio seems to not be recording, do you have any troubleshooting tips for this?
This tutorial is a game changer!!! My first upload was a success however, my second upload has an echo throughout the entire video. The echo isn’t present on the camcorder, just the uploaded file on my laptop. Any suggestions on how to fix this?
Hi :-) This is SO helpful. I've shared with so many people I know who have camcorders. One question though - my camcorder (Sony Hi8 TRV65) doesn't seem to have an audio video port. It has a audio (red), mono (white), and video (yellow); in addition to the aux sized mic (red) and headphone (green) ports. I've been successful using the larger S Video port with a cable I found, but only for video - no audio. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you so much!

Hi Audrie ! Thanks for your tutorial ! I have the same camcorder and I did the transfer step by step thanks to this video. I only have one problem. The image is in blu on OBS when I press PLAY. Maybe I did something wrong but I don't know.. Maybe you know why it's in blue. And thanks for all you videos !!
Get an old mac or pc with a firewire port and capture to an external hard drive. Only use this method of analog capture with analog camcorders. Most of the usb to composite devices are junk, el gato makes a farily descent one however.
So I have done exactly the same as you did but when I play the video there is no source on OBS. Is it possible that I need to do something different with my sony dcr-pc3e camcorder?
Thank you SO much from this! This might be silly to ask but do you know if theres any way to remove the timestamp/date embedded in the videos taken from my camcorder??
I have a Hi8 Samsung SCL700 and one tape cuts off about an hour in and it says "R.EMG/Eject" and another tape won't even play it says "L.EMG/Eject" other tapes play fine, so I am assuming it's a tape issue not camcorder, how can I fix this?
Some Panasonic camcorders let you capture video in full DV quality directly to a computer via USB cable, without needing an external video card. See the TH-cam video: How to transfer video from a MiniDV camcorder to a computer via USB .
i have a question, my camcorder the Song TRV-65 doesn’t have one single audio/video input, it just has the red, yellow, white, and s video, will that converter still work on mine? or do i need to buy a ‘s video’ output with those other three?
What do you use for your memory card? or how do you transfer the media to your computer? If anyone replies to this, thank you 😭😭. (My cam is a DCR-TRV17)
