- It's been a year since my last long-form TH-cam post, and I thought I'd start off simple with a tutorial on how I transfer my camcorder footage to my computer. I have a tutorial on how to digitize camcorder tapes from a few years back for my Hi8 camcorder footage, but since I've been using my Sony Handycam MiniDv Camcorder (DCR-TRV6) more often, I wanted to do a more concise, step-by-step video on how I transfer MiniDV to computer. Technically, MiniDV is already digital (Digital Video), so it's not really digitizing the format, but this process should also work similar for analog formats such as VHS and Hi8 as well.

I'm going to lie I don't even have a camera but it's fun to know a little about everything :3
You never know when you might need the info :)
@@AudrieStorme I'm telling you, the day I have my own camera I will watch your video thousands of times like I have done now hahah :) Greeting from Argentina
:333
You must be kidding
Happy to have you back Audrie 😊
Happy to be back 🥲
I've been looking for ways to do this process for cheap cuz there's a a lot of expensive capturing methods. I'm 100% doing this! Thank you so much for posting this tutorial!!!!
Any luck yet? I am beginning this journey. I have to buy a camcorder first
In this turorial a mini DV camcorder is used. Since the mini DV is a digital cassette, using the a/v analogue output as shown worsens the overall capture quality. The best way to preserve it is by using the DV in/out shown at 2:56. That output is available on every old digital video cameras and it's also known as IEEE1394 or FireWire . Unfortunately only Mac and some PCs have a thunderbolt port ( not to be confused with USB) retro-compatible with the old FireWire/ IEEE1394 port.
Some online stores offer fake usb / FireWire adapters but they don't work because usb and FireWire are different standards and never compatible.
Exactly what I was thinking. Firewire card for a PC is ~$20. If you have a DV recorder like the one used in this video, you can also use it as an input device to get digital files off an analog device like a Hi8....but I'll admit that I use an I-O Data capture device when importing analog video from my Hi8 on to my PC.
Yeah, I was just thinking this. By using the composite (Yellow cable with Red and White audio), you're converting a digital signal to analog and then back to digital again. Using the FireWire method yields the best quality, but it's cumbersome if you don't have the right PC/Mac with PCIe or Thunderbolt capabilities.
Yes, correct! But I have several different camcorders and just wanted to show this method since it also works for Hi8 and VHS
NEEERRD
I have come to the same realization after using this specific capture card method after my Windows Vista computer died before I could convert all my tapes.
When watched on a computer with this method, text in the footage is blurry and unreadable so this is simply not a good route to go for capturing memories on MiniDV.
Now I'm left wondering if those video to microsd devices are good enough or should I invest in an old laptop with FireWire port 🤔
I never thought I'd meet someone on TH-cam who uses the same camcorder as mine. So glad to see you! 😊
Nice and informative video instructions on how to transfer cassettes to digital, not to mention how pretty and beautiful was the host. :)
Welcome back yay!❤❤😊
☺️ thanks for watching
so helpful. the footage at the end was super well edited as well. subbed
Absolutely loved watching this incredibly beautiful video 😎😎

Thank You So Much!
Thanks so much! Has proven so useful for digitizing or making feedback loops !
Thank you for posting this!! Glad to see u posting on youtube
Wonderful 👍
Super helpful video!! What kind of usb adapter do you use for ur Mac?
This was such a simple solution but worked!! I got all the apple thunderbolt adapters before and it gave me such a headache and didn't work...
just one thing, I followed all the steps but the audio seems to not be recording, do you have any troubleshooting tips for this?
wow nice it help me lot thanks 🤩
This was so helpful and I love the way its edited!
Glad it was helpful 🫶🏽
THANK YOU SO MUCHHHH
Thank you. There are so many expensive ways of doing this. Glad I found your version, Thanks again
This was the best tutorial EVER!! Thank you so much❤
i have looked for a good tutorial on this for such a long time so thank you so much! this was amazing !!
Hi Audrie ! Thanks for your tutorial ! I have the same camcorder and I did the transfer step by step thanks to this video. I only have one problem. The image is in blu on OBS when I press PLAY. Maybe I did something wrong but I don't know.. Maybe you know why it's in blue. And thanks for all you videos !!
LOVE LOVE this! I have SO many family videos I want to digitize and hopefully this will do the trick. Have the converter and cable coming soon!
Thank you! Been searching for a solution for a while
It works well with Sony handcam DCR-TRV285E. I hope this comment will help someone in future just like this awesome video.
we missed youuu
your vids are so comforting
Thanks for sticking around 🫶🏽
Thank you SO much from this! This might be silly to ask but do you know if theres any way to remove the timestamp/date embedded in the videos taken from my camcorder??
Thanks for the help! This was exactly what I needed!!
This is exactly what I needed, thank you!
missed seeing your work, what a treat!!
more to come!
This is AMAZING and so helpful ❤❤ THANK YOU!

I SWEAR I WAS THINKING OF YOU FEW WEEKS AGO. WELCOME BACK!!!!!
One year later just felt right 🙈
Thanks to this video,I could do it! I'm enjoyed watching your video in Japan🙌
HELP I followed all the steps but the audio doesn’t seem to be working for me? It’s a Sony dcr-hc36 btw
Hey! I was wondering if you’re thinking about going tapeless with the rc powerplay any time soon? I recently won a handycam in a giveaway and I’m super excited to use it for the summer
i have a camcorder that had no way to export video unless i purchase its original docking station for £200 on ebay! Used the AV out cable that had those male red/white/yellow plug, bought the adapter as suggested, and it worked perfectly! One note i'd like to add is when starting to record on OBS, make sure the internal mic of your pc/mac is turned off.
So happy it worked for you!!
thank you so much!! going to digitize a bunch of my family's home videos
Love that 🥹 enjoy!!
This is such a great video and explanation! Thank you so much!!
WELCOME BACK 😭💜
good to be back ☺️
I have the dcr-sr300, I don’t have the docking station is there still a way I can transfer the footage?
Yayy, you're back!
vlog season ☺️
hi what is that white USB port that you inserted the black usb stick into? at timestamp 3:14? thank you
hi audrieeee i just wanna ask if did u ever had a problem in your minidv camcroders where it says "use new adapter or reinstall" I don't know why but i did all kind of things but still it's blinking fast and it won't open unless it's charging
Hello! How do you put the timestamp on the video itself? Like when you export it into mp4 its shows in the video the time and date. Thank you!
Thank you for this!
how do you flip flop between camcorder and regular footage. The problem I keep running into is that the program I’m using (adobe premiere) isn’t letting me add both footage from both devices into the same video when I edit, please let me know if you ever ran into this problem, fan of your videos. Thanks !
got everything done until 5:01 but I can't see my video... any ideas?
same for me and I have all the same equipment just a Panasonic
thanks for this amazing tutorial
Can you also play videos on the camera itself? We don’t have those cables. We would like to watch it in the device 😊
Quick question.. my camcorder is missing its battery, however I do own a cable that is plugged onto the cam and then into the outlet, that gets the cam going, can I still convert my mini dv without the battery?
Can you use the tape in any type of camcorder
Get an old mac or pc with a firewire port and capture to an external hard drive. Only use this method of analog capture with analog camcorders. Most of the usb to composite devices are junk, el gato makes a farily descent one however.
So I am trying to do this and can follow up to the point of selecting “AV to USB 2.0”. I am given only 2 options, USB Video and FaceTime HD Camera. I am getting so frustrated with trying to make this work! I want to convert several mini DV tapes from my canon zr300 and can not seem to find the right solution to do so!
does this work from a canon mv700 to a hp laptop?
This is great. Thanks for the video it's really easy to understand, and now i can copy all my mini dvs 🤩 thx again.
Can we Directly record on it i mean without cassette
hello, so I've followed along your tutorial and I'm having issues with the audio because it will start fine in the beginning but then the audio will have an ech sounds. Any idea what this could be causing??
Can you please show how to fix the colour after connecting.
The other methods we tried did not work only this method worked and I would really like to know how to fix the colour part of it
thank u
Thanks for watching!
Under devices, I only see Facetime HD Camera and OBS Virtual Camera. How can I add AV to USB 2.0?
bought a 2012 mac mini Catalina for $100 last year of firewire plugged it in loaded life flix and everything worked perfectly no extra cables or work around
thanks Audrie
btw after export to file why the sound have a noise ?
It might be your camcorder or the mic on your computer may not have been muted during the recording
ahh i see, so we must muted the camcorder during recording. Thanks@@AudrieStorme, i will try
Not the camcorder - the computer mic! Otherwise your footage won’t have any sound
Does anyone know if the open broadcaster software works for chrome book laptops ?
my old sharp camcorder doesn't have an Audio/Video single input so I used an RCA red, white, yellow cable outputs (since the do send audio and video signals) from the camcorder to connect the the video capture card same RCA color inputs then USB to my MacBook. I used Quicktime to capture the video and audio. The Audio is very faint and not as high sound. Maybe I should use OBS, but need to figure out the configuration since , again I dont have a single audio/video input on the camcorder. Any suggestions?
The cable method you’re describing sounds like it should work to me! I just tried using QuickTime as a test and it seems like the audio is being defaulted to using my MacBook mic (so I can hear all the external camcorder sounds as well as the audio from the footage), but maybe try increasing the volume on the camcorder and seeing if that works at all?
TYSM! Thought I had to order another cable! SAVED ME MONEY 😭😭😭
You're welcome!!
i have a question, my camcorder the Song TRV-65 doesn’t have one single audio/video input, it just has the red, yellow, white, and s video, will that converter still work on mine? or do i need to buy a ‘s video’ output with those other three?
no. the svideo will take the place of the yellow connection. you will need an s video cable and the red and white cables for audio
One question: I have some 8mm cassettes where I recorded videos with a Sony Handicam (I don't remember the model). Then it broke and I threw it away. Quite a few years have passed since then. Now I bought a similar Sony handycam (although a little smaller but the same, from HI8) because I wanted to convert those cassettes to digital but when I tried to play them I got streaks and sounds, similar to those of a TV when the cable goes out. Then I recorded a few seconds over what was recorded to see if the problem continued, but no. The little that I recorded did look good. Apparently I bought the camera for nothing. What could be causing this problem?
Hi8 and 8mm cassettes are not the same - I believe Hi8 is an updated version of 8mm, so you’re probably having issues converting because those formats aren’t compatible. I can’t be for sure since I don’t know the model of your camera, but I’m guessing it’s that!
do you know if this will work (sound wise) if i don't have an audio jack and just a mic jack? i have like a super old panasonic camcorder
I’d need to see it to be sure, but if it doesn’t, I’m assuming that the camcorder wasn’t meant to be connected to an another source and relied on its tapes being played on a tape deck or something like that.
I have missed your videos ❤
Thank you for still watching 🥹
@@AudrieStorme you’ve been one of my favourite content creators for so many years, I’ve changed phones and I couldn’t log into my old account and I spent a while looking for you here on TH-cam and I did find you finally 🥹 you’re one of the OGs , cool and peaceful vibes, loved your trips to Japan, your mom’s vintage dresses, the plants the cooking, the camera and photos developing... I just wanna say that your vlogs radiate good energy. That’s something we don’t see much of here on TH-cam anymore. So it’s good to have you back and I hope life been good to you ♥️
I teared up reading this 🥲 thank you for the kind words and I’m so happy to hear that you’ve enjoyed my videos! Life has been a bit rough health-wise for me this year, but I’m feeling much better and hoping I can keep up with a more consistent schedule.

Hey, is it even better to use a s-video cable on top of the red yellow and white one or doesnot it do something?
If yours has that input, you can try plugging it in and seeing how it looks - mine doesn’t fit that so I didn’t use it!
Is there any possible way to be able to get the date and time stamp when you digitalize the footages?
The time stamp is usually a setting on the camcorder that you turn on while recording (in my experience), so if you had that setting off, then no.
Hey, only the audio is appearing on OBS for me, any trouble shooting tips?
same any one figure this out???
Gotta love digitizing the old medium
Who are you calling old
:D
I tried this with my SONY DCR- TRV828E camera but my footage was in black and white and had a lot of noise, do you think using an S-video chord would fix that.
Yes, you could try that! The method in the video has worked for several of my camcorders, but this whole process really depends on your camcorder input/output - another method may work better depending on the type.
Is it possible to record without a cassette?
What video editing software do you use?
Adobe Premiere for long-form and Premiere Rush & CapCut for short-form videos!
We have the same camcorder and I have a buncha baby videos ive been trying to get, thank you 🙏
i love this sm
Needed this because I have so many cassette vlogs from when I was in middle school and idk how to convert them
I just went through and converted a bunch for my family from when I was little 🥲 lots of laughs and tears
What’s that white piece called ? The adapter you used ?
It’s a USB 2.0 to USB-C converter since my laptop doesn’t have a USB 2.0 input
Awesome 🎉
hey can you also convert using the S-Video slot ?
Yes, I’ve done that before with my Hi8 camcorder! But I believe you’ll still need to plug in for sound as well because that’s only a video channel.
@@AudrieStorme Yes, S-Video only carries video, so that other cable is still needed for audio. But S-Video has better picture quality than composite video (the yellow RCA plug).
idk why, but in obs my av to usb doesnt show up at video capture device
Lovely video and mini DV footage. I wonder if you can import the footage without the need of the Video capture card but only using firewire 800 to thunderbolt adapter + thunderbolt 2 to thunderbolt 3 (usb-c). Anyone tried this out?
I just bought one and will test it out once I receive!
@@AudrieStormein the meanwhile I bought it (or better said “them” as I needed 1 cable and 2 adapters total…) and it totally works 🖤
Is there any way to fix an audio echo occurring when a recording SONY handycam to digital video with OBS recording?
I’m having the same issue
I’m having the same issue
@@Samxglez I think I found a solution for my situation, I muted the additional 'Audio' line she sets up in the tutorial, since OBS showed that sound was already coming from my camcorder. I think one of the two sources was causing a lag, so just using the camcorder audio seems to work. Although, I will sometimes get stretches in the video with no sound and I have to re-record. So overall, not a perfect system, but it just takes patience and troubleshooting. I'm using a sony handycam digital 8.
@@rachelsfoodventures54 Thank you I will try that out because I have a Sony handycam that uses hi8 cassettes and I hope that this will work for me.
This only gives me audio from the cam corder. i can’t find any videos that fix this
I've missed your vedios
🥹❤️
amazing❤️
my screen of video is stuck on black screen but audio plays just fine. any help pls?
did you find any solution for this? i have the same problem
do you know how to tape over the tape to re use it?
Just press the record button and it records over footage
What video software do u recommend? I have a mac
I use OBS!
@AudrieStorme I meant editing software sorry lol
I like Adobe Premiere, but I’ve heard a lot of good things about Davinci Resolve and CapCut for desktop if you need something cheaper!
Some Panasonic camcorders let you capture video in full DV quality directly to a computer via USB cable, without needing an external video card. See the TH-cam video: How to transfer video from a MiniDV camcorder to a computer via USB .
lifesaver!!!!!
for me, the audio of the camcorder's mic isnt being picked up, can anyone help?
I'm pretty much doing the same thing with the same camera, but when i plug into the av into my capture card, no video shows up when the camera is turned on. idk what im doing wrong ;(
Are you trying to convert from tape or card? This just works for tape I believe, but it’s a slightly different process if you’re taking videos from the memory card. If you are trying with tape, it may be that the camcorder is set to card and not tape (I’m not sure bc i have a different camcorder)
