  • Hi, I'm Tate Harris and this is The Daily Report. Today was a crazy day, my driver was about to quit his job. I also lifted and mowed my grandparents lawn, which was good, but tiring. Thanks for watching and I'll see you tomorrow.

This company doesn’t sound well run at all. If they’re that short handed, they aren’t paying enough. If he works that much, he’ll definitely be a good employee elsewhere. Definitely a good lesson to stand up for yourself.

So if this driver quits, the company is without a driver permanently versus being without a driver for one week. That’s like cutting off your nose to spite your face.

@@bg147 Yeah, and it's short-sighted. Everyone should be replaceable in an emergency (people have accidents, go on vacation, get sick, die unexpectedly), but replacing an employee quickly and immediately is very cost-ineffective. This company is going to have to spend money on recruiting someone, then wait for them to be available while there's no one at all available to make all those deliveries, then take up someone's time teaching the new guy the route, and once he's trained, it will be a while before he can make the runs as fast as the previous guy. That company is likely to lose customers when they can't deliver and can't promise that next week, they will be able to deliver. They also can't charge for the missed deliveries, so they'll be bleeding money for a while instead of for less than a week.

It depends on the type of employment. They'll find a cause if it suits them. It will affect future employment as well depending on the industry. Labor laws are crap in this country. In Britain, it is illegal for future employers to even contact and ask certain questions about previous employees.

I agree with you. It may be a trap. Sometimes this is how companies will clean house to get rid of employees who are tenured so they can hire someone else at a lower pay scale. This is called wage avoidance. It is against the law but too many companies get away with it. If you're in a right to work state then they can pretty much fire you for wearing the wrong color shoes. (IE) They don't need a reason.

That wouldn't happen in Australia. If an employer tried that in Australia and fired someone for not turning up on their holiday they would be sued and lose. He can easily get a job in Australia as a driver as we have a shortage of drivers here. Paid vacation here is 4 weeks minimum for every worker but a lot of businesses give 5 weeks.

This would not happen in Canada or Europe with stronger employee benefit rights.

I immediately thought of the movie “What about Bob” when you mentioned your partner is going to vacation at Lake Winnipesaukee! I feel bad for your partner. He’s obviously given a lot of himself to that company and they reward him by saying he has to work during his vacation and they don’t say anything until literally a few days before his vacation. If he let them know ahead of time that he was taking vacation, then it’s on them to cover for him. People can’t work crazy hours like he is for a long period of time. Hope he does end up taking the other job. Companies like this need to realize that they can’t treat people like this

The idea of working seven days a week 10 hours a day is cruel and unusual punishment….

  • @thomasd5
    @thomasd5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

As a German, I even can't imagine that. We have 20 days of paid vacation by law, but usually, you get at least 25 to 30 days. And you can't waive any of these days, the law says you have to take all of your vacation days to recreate. If you turn ill during vacation days, the doctor reports that to your employer electronically and you get those days in addition to paid vacation days.
And of course, every employee has health insurance and the scope of services is regulated by law. Therefore no health insurance can refuse to pay, and you are not even bothered with doctors' invoices including specialists or hospital bills, because the care provider bills the insurance directly. There's no co-payment except in the pharmacy, which is up to 10 Euros per medicine, 10 Euros per hospital day (recovering part of the food), and some dentist activities, which might require a co-payment.
And of course, you get paid if you are ill. The first six weeks per case are fully paid by the employer, and from the seventh week, you get paid by health insurance. The insurance can reduce the payment a few percent, but not very much, and they pay more than a year, if necessary.
And the US as the richest country can't afford to give their workers, who create the nation's wealth, a fair amount of paid vacation, full health insurance, paid maternity leave (for both parents), and a retirement pension?

Work is a compromise between what the company needs and what the human needs. You can't work none stop all the time the point of a job is to better your free time.

So instead of giving the driver a week off, they now have to hire a new driver, which will take probably a month. Doesn’t seem intelligent to me on the part of the warehouse.

I wouldn't show up. If they already gave him the time off, then he technically doesn't have to go in if he can prove he was given a vacation. At least that is how the law works here, If he is smart he won't quit. Just don't show up.
I do wish your partner the best. However, I can understand not giving vacations during peak season. Most jobs won't.

If any of you are working more than 40 hours a week, I hope you are all getting overtime. I live in New York state. It is a NYS labor law mandate that all employers pay time and a half after 40 hours. I know this because a company I was working crazy hours for, was not handling their overtime properly. I had always thought it was suspicious. Someone anonymously reported it to the NY State Department of Labor. There was an investigation and not only was a correction made to payroll, but the company was ordered to compensate everyone for unpaid back-pay. It even extended to people who no longer worked there. Everyone got checks amounting to thousands of dollars. My boss, the owner, fired his bookkeeper/accountant. For years, she had not been handling his payroll properly. Check with your Department of Labor. Don't ask payroll.

why dont he get 4 days off for his birthday like others do? the job makes all the money during the summer so that is when you have to work as much as possible to build up money because winter time brings way less hours and that is when you go on vacation, he will not get time off in the winter at his next job, getting screwed is when you work and not get paid.
